Mitchell Jacobs has worked cargo theft at Walmart, security at Halliburton and United Airlines, and now runs safety and security for Lennox. He sat down with TalkLPnews Editor-in-Chief, Amber Bradley, to talk about the thing that actually keeps him up at night: a whole trailer can vanish off your dock and you won’t know for hours. His fix starts with something most leaders skip, which is standing still on the floor long enough to watch two associates try to check in 30 trucks an hour while you ask them to be perfect.
He also has a warning. Criminals are already using AI to mine broker boards and build fake bills of lading, and LP is too slow to catch up. Plus the leadership lesson he got from a YMCA boardroom in the 1980s, and why a closed case stopped feeling like a win.
While American retailers are still asking “who’s actually implementing AI….that works,” Andy Edwards at Iceland Foods, a UK retailer with a thousand stores, is already using it — successfully. And guess what? He has use cases galore. Joe Lawless, Senior Transportation and Security Advisor at Edward Davis, LLC, joins TalkLP Host Amber Bradley to talk crisis management. Joe has not only had an impressive career in law enforcement and in public service, he was also responsible for the security at the Boston Logan Airport on Sept. 11, 2001 — the worst attack against the homeland in our nation’s history. Joe discusses the unbelievable scope of his responsibility when he was in charge of the Massachusetts Port Authority and how his team prepared for high-stake situations in America’s most vulnerable areas. Joe’s Background: Joseph Lawless is one of the world’s most respected leaders in transportation security and risk management. In his 37 years in law enforcement, he served as Director of Maritime and Aviation Security for the Massachusetts Port Authority, chaired the American Association of Port Authorities Security Committee and testified before the U.S. Congress on numerous occasions providing expertise on security policy. Lawless is currently a senior advisor at Edward Davis LLC and serves as the Board President of the International Association of Airport and Seaport Police.

The Ring of Excellence Award is reserved for distinguished professionals who have shaped the loss prevention industry through their leadership and innovations. One of this year’s recipients is Van Carney, senior security and loss prevention consultant for Keiser Communications and Security LLC.
Carney spent nearly three decades leading loss prevention, safety and security for Domino’s corporate headquarters as well as its largest franchise, MSK Management. He is now employed at Keiser, where he developed the company’s physical security requirements and executive protection program. He recently uncovered a major embezzlement scheme, recovering a substantial portion of the $117,000 loss.
Carney is member of the NRF Loss Prevention Advisory Board and a former member of the board’s Legislative Committee. He is also a former vice president and board member at the Restaurant Loss Prevention & Security Association. He is a graduate of the FBI’s Domestic Security Alliance Council executive training program and has held the designations of Certified Protection Professional and Certified Fraud Examiner.
