Episode 108 – Remembering Bob Greenwood

On Thursday, September 9th, the automotive service industry lost one of its most visionary business development trainers when Bob Greenwood passed away suddenly at the young age of 71. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bob’s family at this most difficult time, and we hope they find comfort in the outpouring of sympathy from the many in our industry who were mentored and had their lives touched by Bob’s wit and wisdom.

We interviewed Bob on October 21, 2020 where, in the midst of a pandemic, he shared his vision for elevating the automotive industry with a new way of looking at the business of automotive service and repair. Bob presented his new Business Development Class in partnership with the Automotive Service Association, and it was extremely popular. With over 40 years of Business Management experience within the Independent sector of the automotive aftermarket in North America, Bob was widely recognized as one of the best business development coaches in the industry. The changes we’re facing due to the pandemic require that we think differently. To answer this need, Bob created a new Level 1 Business Development class presented by ASA to explain that new way of thinking about the business of automotive service and repair. Episode 96 – Virtual Interactive Diagnostic Challenge Combines Fun and Learning

In many ways, the recent ASA X50 Conference & Expo provided the opportunity to try some new things. One great example of this was the Interactive Diagnostic Challenge presented by Brin Kline and Rich Falco, with the support of CTI, WTI, and Training by Techs. At the heart of all associations is the need to provide relevant information and ongoing learning to the membership, and the past year presented some unique challenges to accomplishing that goal. With the sudden reliance on virtual events came a new appreciation of the value such events can provide. From savings on training expenses for travel, lodging and meals, to the opportunity to receive important training information at your convenience via recorded sessions, panels and vendor interaction. It’s become more and more obvious that even the live events will have a virtual component going forward, and some of those virtual components will represent fun ways of learning while building relationships through cooperative competition.

In this episode, Brin and Rich share their thoughts on how the Interactive Diagnostic Challenge came about and how it became one of the most successful sessions at the ASA X50 Conference. Hear all about it as they discuss:

Episode 95 – Gary Smith on the Need for PWM Training

Keeping up with automotive technology requires ongoing training. That’s particularly true when it comes to learning more about Pulse Width Modulation (PWM). Gary Smith of DiagNation knows that better than most, but these days it’s as much about radio frequencies as it is basic electricity. The type of things we need to know about range from basic electrical components and circuits to how transistors affect current flow and signal generation in order to properly interpret waveforms. Gary talks about developing new types of test equipment to measure radio frequency signals, which offers the potential for faster and less-invasive test procedures. It’s not just about what we’re learning, but how we’re learning it! If you want a look ahead to where we’re going with automotive control systems, this podcast is for you!

Among the many topics discussed, you’ll hear about:

·       Part of the gap between training and understanding comes down to the basics.

·       Understanding the physical mechanism and the electrical behavior behind it is more important than ever before.

·       Knowing how Pulse Width Modulation in its base form works allows one to expand their diagnostic capabilities between different models and manufacturers.

·       How to work the basics into advanced training to enhance your understanding of what the test equipment is telling you.

·       How modulation works and is used in modern automotive applications.

·       Why understanding signal processing allows you to improve your diagnostic skills to answer over 90% of all diagnostic questions you encounter.

·       The role of Pulse Width Modulation in ADAS control systems.

·       Why you’ll never outgrow the knowledge of basic signal processing.

·       How much of this training applies to the new challenges technicians will face as the vehicle fleet moves towards electrification.

Episode 87 – Advanced Vehicles Require Advanced Repair Procedures

Today’s vehicles are marvels of modern technology. From computer-controlled engine management to Advanced Driver Assist Systems (ADAS), even the most average car or light truck is a rolling computer network. Making sure all of these systems are working properly after a collision requires advanced equipment and highly-trained technicians, along with a new list of standard repair procedures to ensure a safe and complete repair. The investment in equipment and training alone is significant for collision repair facilities, and it’s reasonable to conclude that there must be a return on that investment to allow the business to continue investing in the people and equipment necessary to keep up with advancing vehicle technology. In this episode, ASA Collision Director Mike LeVasseur explains the work done by the ASA Collision Operations Committee in cooperation with other industry associations to help educate shops and insurance companies on the necessity of properly compensating shops performing pre and post-repair vehicle scans. Listen in as Mike discusses:

·       Why ADAS-equipped vehicles need to be scanned for trouble codes as part of the estimating process for determining the true extent of collision damage.

·       The process the ASA Collision Operations Committee (COC) used to identify the issues surrounding vehicle scanning.

·       What the insurance providers need to know about how repair procedures are changing in the face of advancing vehicle technology.
