Adoption in first century Roman times was very different from how we understand adoption today. Back then, adoption was the time when the father recognized that their son was mature and no longer needed the child guides that they were in bondage to. The way we look at our bodies governs how we treat ourselves and others. We all have a theology of the body - and so does Satan. We need God’s perspective. Anything other than His, is a perspective that leads to death. Sin has given us the ability to create a theology of the body apart from God. The body is an instrument of righteousness - it is made to be surrendered to God’s purposes. But God is the best caretaker of the body and surrender to his care is better than our care. We are often guilty of the comparing ourselves with others and feeling that we come up short. Yet it is foolish to do that, because it means putting ourselves under the standard (which is another way of saying the Law) which only guarantees that we experience death and condemnation.

Yet, the Apostle Paul decides to lower himself into this foolishness to show that the false apostles who are placing the church in Corinth under law, are unworthy of their toleration.

Everyday we battle the voice of shame as the Flesh tries to regain control over us using the Law of standards, expectations, and performance. But conflict doesn't have to be a bad thing, it can be a very positive thing - when we understand how to overcome the hurt that conflict can bring. We all have struggles with financial insecurity. Whether we have too much or not enough - if you put too much trust in your money - you are insecure. Why? Because finances are not true security. Financial insecurity has a cost because it robs us of the TRUE peace that comes from God. True security and true wealth come from God because He is the giver of wealth. True wealth is knowing and being known by the giver of wealth. Whether we have a lot of money or not, money is a tool to know the Father’s love, affirmation and care. Knowing him is the greatest value. When we are faithful to Him with our money, we are freed from the burden of earning money in the flesh and we experience His joy in giving.

In the opening verses of Genesis we meet the main character of the story - God. God in three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. But in verse 3, Light appears, but it's not until day 4 that the sun, moon, and stars are made. So what is the Light on day 1 in verse 3? Sometimes Jesus is silent on a subject. Sometimes Jesus has other plans. Sometimes, even when we're desperate, we find out that Jesus' plans are different than ours. What do we do when accepting Jesus' plan is hardest thing we could do. Mark 7:24-30 describes the story of a woman who came to interrupt Jesus' plans in a dire situation. Psalm 3 is a description of King David at the darkest point of his life - rejected and pursued by his son's army. However among all his failures leading up to this point the psalmist also demonstrates an uncanny ability to trust in God. Like David, we are surrounded, enclosed and encircled by hardships. So much so that it feels like there is no escape from harm. How do we endure this? We can endure hardships by trusting that no matter what comes; God is our shield, support and salvation. When we trust Him to be those things for us, we experience His honour, His strength at work and His justice.

As we conclude the Armor of God series, we come to the final two items that every Christian needs in battle – the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit. The helmet of salvation is more about the battle that we face in our minds. The second piece of armor that Paul describes in this famous Ephesians 6 passage is the breastplate of righteousness. The breastplate was used to protect the vital core of the solider. Certain words and ideas can elicit very strong reactions. Few can compare to the reaction of hearing words like; authority, submission, and headship. What we do with our hurts and wounds will determine the degree of freedom we will experience. If we decide that we never will allow anyone to ever hurt us again, we retreat into a 'panic room' of sorts within our selves. This form of self-protection will provide some protection from the abuse of others - but it will also keep love and life out as well. Guaranteeing that our wounds and hurts, which are locked up with us in our panic room, will only get worse.

As we close out 2020, it is natural to reflect on how difficult a year it has been, and hope that next year will be better. But what if next year is not better? What if next year is more of the same, or even worse? Where do we find the hope to continue?

We look to those who have gone before us for their wisdom. Particularly, David in Psalm 31 where he writes about his distress, loneliness, and struggles and how he placed his hope in God as an answer.

Anger is a common emotion. And while emotions are not good or bad in themselves, expressions of anger that are controlled by the Flesh can leave much damage. Both to the one who is angry and those around.

Overcoming the temptation to express our anger in unhealthy ways needs more than just counting to ten and other shallow solutions. It needs the power of the Holy Spirit to overcome the Flesh and show us how to respond with love.

God has granted various kinds of gifts to the church. Romans 12 lists gifts that are motivational in nature, 1 Corinthians 12 lists others that are a unique expression of the Holy Spirit, and then in Ephesians 4, Paul lists leadership roles within the Church. We live in a world of inequality. This inequality exists, and specifically an inequality of how we view one another, because people operate that the life, that we all need, is a limited commodity. It’s in limited supply. A zero-sum game where if you get some, that means I get less. And therefore, I need to be more deserving than you of life.

But because of what Jesus Christ has done and given to us, He has overcome this inequality by making us equal in Him. This is made clear through the Apostle Paul in Ephesians 4:4-6 where we discover the power of one for all and all for one.

Next to Jesus, the Apostle Paul is the most influential person in Christianity. His writings have been studied more than anyone else in history. He planted churches and was the first to take the gospel to those beyond the borders of Israel. But what drove Paul? What did he value? What was at the heart of his character that allowed him to be used by God in a way that transformed the world forever?

Feeling the pressure? You're not alone if you are wondering, how am I going to make it through the next month? With so much uncertainty we're hard-pressed to find peace under all this pressure. Luke 2:14 promises peace as an inheritance to believers however we still find ourselves asking How can I experience peace under pressure from external and internal forces? Today we will unpack the mystery and promise of peace to those who are in Christ.

God has brought together a wide and diverse group of people to create the church. The body of Christ which is a collection of wonderfully unique people – living stones – that have been fitted together to form the temple of the Holy Spirit, a dwelling place for God, Himself. The last few days have been unprecedented. There were a couple of days there where everything seemed to be cancelled – sporting events, schools, conferences, concerts, etc. The stock market has crashed down to 1980 levels, and some people’s retirements and investments have been wiped out. recently we have been hearing words of a pandemic, global outbreak, infectious disease, mortality rate. It is natural that we would begin to experience feelings of fear with all the news reports and social media attention.

So what can our response be? Pastor Ross reminds us what our Father has given to us - a Spirit of power, love and a sound mind.

Living in this world has left a deep scar of shame on each of our souls. A mark that causes us to believe that we are the only one this flawed and questioning if even Jesus can help us. It is in this pit that Jesus comes and proclaims peace – healing and made whole. It is a healing that comes from accepting the invitation to sit with our Heavenly Father and allow Him to speak truth into our deepest wound. Listen as Ross teaches from Ephesians 2:17-18 and the peace and healing offered to everyone, near and far.

Who are you? How do you identify yourself? These questions are critical to answer, especially in a world where identity politics is being played by every side to gain power. In Ephesians 2:11-16, the Apostle Paul wrote to a church struggling to come together because of their very different backgrounds. Thankfully, as believers in Christ, we have an identity that is greater than our race, gender, job or anything else that we do or look like. It is an identity rooted in who we are in Jesus and who Jesus is in us. Listen as Ross applies this 1st century passage in a 21st century world.

One of the many problems for Christians over the centuries has been the answer to this question: If I am made righteous, why do I struggle with sin? The solution for centuries has been to work harder at not struggling, yet that has proven itself to be a problem too. If we dig deeper into the biblical understanding of sin and its origins, we'll find the problem is in us but not of us.

We are God’s ‘workmanship’ and are created for good. Both for good works and for the good that our Father has planned for us. Join Ross as he shares from Ephesians 2:10 the invitation that Jesus offers us every day.

Now that we are saved by grace, don’t we need to keep the Law in order for God to be pleased with us and earn His blessing? That kind of misguided thinking is a result of not understanding the nature of God’s grace and the effect of the Law on sin. Listen as Ross Gilbert explains what it means to live under a Law system mentality and why it is doomed to fail as he teaches from Ephesians 2:8-9.

We don’t intend to fail. We want to make good choices and do things well. But we don’t always. We fail, make mistakes, make bad choices. And our enemy shames us into thinking that God is disappointed in us and that we better try harder or else. But that is not what one of the most famous passages on the entire New Testament teaches. Ephesians 2:8-9 is our answer to all the enemy throws at us - "For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast." Listen and embrace the freedom that Father’s grace will bring to you.

In today's sermon, we spend time studying the work of a poet struggling to cope in the midst of sweeping catastrophe. The artist runs unflinchingly through some of the most painful and difficult emotions humanity can experience: utter loss. Thorough devastation. Abject loneliness. Within this painful, beautiful piece of art, God reveals His faithfulness and goodness to us - and invites us to take one more step of trust.

Judgement day. Those two words probably leave you feeling like you have an exam in biochemistry that you haven’t studied for. Fear. Dread. Guilt. Shame. The prospect of facing a judgement day has often been used to scare people into altering their behaviour.

But, as believers in Jesus, judgement day is not a day that we should fear. Instead, it’s a day where we will celebrate all that God has done through each of us. For that is the heart of God. Not to punish, but loving us, in order to love us more. Listen as Ross explains the kinds of judgements coming and the goal of God in saving us as he teaches from Ephesians 2:7.

It can be very hard to live emotionally open because we are often afraid if you knew what was going on inside of me. If I shared my feelings and told you about myself, what will you think? What will you do? Will you accept me? Will you reject me?

The truth from Ephesians 2:5-6 and our identity in Christ means that I am seated with Christ in heavenly places. It means that I am fully known and fearlessly loved. It means I am completely secure and accepted in the person of Jesus Christ. Therefore, I am free to experience my emotions and live above the line.

Evangelism can be a dirty word. We often fear it because of the context by which it was introduced to us. We were either told we had to do for Christian merit or we were told that it was set apart only for great 'evangelists.' This talk is a bedrock conversation about the whys and hows of evangelism and how it speaks to our new covenant hearts.

But God. Maybe the two greatest words in the English language. We were born experiencing death, making a mess of ourselves and the world around us. But God. God’s rich mercy and great love caused Him to rescue us and save us from our mess, but also from ourselves. “Life is hard” is one of those obvious statements, you might as well be saying “water is wet!” Trials and difficulties are an inevitable part of all of our lives—that’s just a reality. But that doesn’t take away from the fact that they can often be overwhelming. In Ephesians 1:19, Paul tells us about the surpassing greatness of God’s power that is a present tense power. It’s not a power to distract us from our stuff, but a power that meets us in the middle of our insecurities, shame, anxieties, depression, illnesses, disappointments, hurts and frustrations. It’s the same power that conquered the grave and raised Jesus from the dead.

What motivated Jesus to leave Heaven, lay down His rights, suffer on the cross and die? Why would He ever willingly choose to experience that? Because He loves you. God wanted to have an inheritance, a possession, a treasure that is His saints.

We try to fix our mistakes, but what do we do with our sin? We try to sweep it under the rug, ignore it, justify them...but our sin remains. It takes Jesus to redeem us so we can be forgiven and free. The question is will we forgive ourselves?

In The Book of Malachi, The Hebrews wondered if God loved them based on what they saw going on around them? They were looking for life on the outside. Sometimes new Covenant believers get stuck doing the same thing—even though what we have in Christ is far better than what those under the Old Covenant experienced. What would it mean to you if someone took a deep interest in you. If you were fully known, inside and out, and loved even more as a result. "Exploring a life of shame, a really crappy week, and a moment of pure grace"

This week, many difficult and painful memories bubbled to the surface of my mind. It was like Father invited me to walk with Him from one difficult moment in my history into another… He showed me that the damage I’d suffered cut down into my beliefs about ME.

True to His nature as a good, good Father, God stepped into each of those moments. He reminded me again of the beautiful truths of this journey, this LIFE, I’m walking with God.

Saints with Everything - Ephesians 1:1-3 by New Life Fellowship

Sin. What is it? What do we do when we've sinned? And, just as important, what is God's response when we sin? It's an uncomfortable topic for many of us...but does it need to be? What if God's response to when we mess up isn't what we think it is? If we respond to sin how God wants us to, could it lead us to truly experience Life?

In the opening verses in the letter to the Ephesians, Paul reminds his readers the importance and necessity of grace and peace. In this first message in a new series on the book of Ephesians, Ross explores the nature of grace and peace and why we need to experience both in each moment of each day.

Rejection is something that we all have faced. It as almost as though God is not afriad of us experiencing rejection. In this talk, we learn how rejection only affirms the truth that the unconditional acceptance we are looking for is only found in Jesus.

Jesus teaches us that unless we abide in Him, we are unable to accomplish anything. Then what does it mean to abide and more importantly, how do we do it? Abiding is not some form of mystical enlightenment that we must achieve. Nor is it trying to live like Jesus by copying His behaviour. In John 15:4-5, Jesus makes it plain to us as He uses a very simple illustration to explain what it means to abide in Him.

Those who struggle with fear will recognize this progression: a seed thought drops into your mind, and a paint by numbers image expands in your imagination. Your brain fills in the picture with colour and grit and before you know it, you’re frozen in place. Fear leaps from the periphery into the forefront; your chest tightens and your pulse begins to race.

In the face of such crippling emotion, can it be true that “Perfect Love casts out fear”, as 1 John 4:18 declares?

Making Room for the Holy Spirit by New Life Fellowship

Ever since the Fall, when Adam and Eve disobeyed God and shame entered into our world, men and women have been struggling to overcome that shame, trying to prove that sense of value and worth. It is not wrong that we need to answer those questions. The real issue is how do we answer these questions? Ross explains what love and acceptance that is by faith, apart from works means.

Everyone suffers loss in a myriad of ways. Matthew 5:4 says : Blessed are those who mourn; for they will be comforted. A closer look at the verse in the context of the new covenant reveals a deeper understanding of what it means to be 'blessed in the midst of grieving'.

Understanding your enemy and how they attack is critical to achieving victory. Ross walks us through Galatians 5:16-18 to help us understand that the battle is not a battle against our old sinful nature. The old self was crucified with Christ. The battle is with the flesh – which is in you, but not you. It is not even a battle that you are meant to overcome on your own. It is Jesus that provides victory over sin and temptation.

On Easter Sunday we celebrate the victory of Jesus Christ on the cross. Ross takes us through Romans 5:6-8 where we see that it was while we were in bondage to sin, death and shame – helpless to free ourselves – that Jesus gave His life. It was more than just an act of love, it was an act of strength motivated by His love, as Jesus became our champion over sin and death.

For too long Christian’s have held the belief that their sanctification was all up to them. But as 1 Thessalonians 5:23 tells us, it’s God’s work to sanctify us—and He’s faithful to do it. When we discover this truth, the real transformation can begin. For this week’s message, Ross uses an analogy of an apartment to illustrate what that looks like.

The Authority of Jesus by New Life Fellowship

We were designed for life in Eden, but this world sure isn't it. All of us experience things we were never designed to experience. We carry weight we weren't designed to carry. To us, Jesus says "Come to me, and I will give you rest. Living life through and with me can be easy—pleasant even. I want to show you what I'm really like. I want to show you what's true about you. Then, you'll realize your outlook and your future is more hopeful than you've ever imagined..."

There has been much confusion and bondage around the topic of money in the church. “How much is a person supposed to give?” “Am I robbing God if I don’t give Him my tithe?” In this message, Pastor Ross discusses the difference between tithing and giving. How one belongs to the Old Covenant and the other to the New, and how Father is much more interested in your heart than He is in your wallet.

Our battle is not with flesh and blood and so our weapons are not of this world. Instead, our greatest weapon is to call out to God. It is prayer. This Sunday join us as Pastor Ross discusses prayer and why "calling on God" is so powerful. We'll see you then!

God's never ending, perfect love towards us is how He earns our trust. It is a trust that He hopes will bring about an invitation on our part for Him to bring healing and redemption to our souls.
