“The ADA requires employers to provide adjustments or modifications - called reasonable accommodations - to enable applicants and employees with disabilities to enjoy equal employment opportunities unless doing so would be an undue hardship (that is, a significant difficulty or expense). Accommodations vary depending on the needs of the individual with a disability. Not all employees with a visual disability will need an accommodation or require the same accommodations.
What types of reasonable accommodations may employees with visual disabilities need? Some employees may need one or more of the following accommodations assistive technology, including.

As a result, his mother contacted Marvel Comics, who invented the "Blue Ear," a four-year-old boy who wears his listening devices to rescue the world.

Is it because millennials are uninformed "loud noise" might cause deafness in pregnancy for their unborn child that 90 percent of deaf babies have hearing parents? Even bathroom hand dryers can be a cause of hearing loss. Well now you know.
For many years, American Girl has created dolls for people with variety of disabilities. Joss is an American Surfer Girl Doll with hearing loss using hearing aids. She is the 2020 American Disabilities Doll and role model for future generations for kids to be empowered. Her motto is "Riding the Waves Her Wave." ASSISTANCE DOGS Resources:
(Guide, Signal and Service Dogs)
Assistance animals are individually trained to perform tasks for people with
disabilities, such as: guiding people who are blind (guide dogs), alerting people
who are deaf (signal dogs) and alerting people who have seizures, etc. (service
dogs). Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, businesses and organizations
that serve the public must allow people with disabilities to bring their assistance
animals into all areas of public facilities. Businesses may ask if the animal is an
assistance animal or what task it performs, but cannot require special
identification cards for the animal or ask about the person’s disability. Listed
below are a number of schools and organizations that may help in locating
appropriately trained assistance dogs.

Like Doug Sandler of Nice Guys In Business Podcast said, It’s Teresa and I now have a deaf that is d e a f sign name that my Aunt Peggy who is deaf gave me last October 2021 when I went to visit her. It’s TJ. It stands for us Trust Jesus and also for Teresa June. June is my middle name. So, I am here to welcome you on the Barnes Communications Strategies Online Courses that also launched since we last shared a Podcast together.

Here are 5 Items you can do to help retain and attract the multi trillion dollar hearing loss community to your business.
Have a Hearing Friendly Space with lighting around 500 LUX and decibels around 72
Have a least two Hearing Friendly Hearing Heroes to assist this trillion dollar market niche
Have the Hearing Friendly Symbol on your website, store front both as a business and as an employer. The DEAF/HOH are hungry to work and will be loyal employees and customers
Have special discount days for them. Some cash flow in is better than none at all
Offer Hearing Health as part of Your Wellness Programs.
Most have not heard of Amended American Disabilities Act for 2008 and the general response I receive is oh let’s included all the disabilities rather than just hearing loss. Well no matter what other disability you have listening will help determine your productivity, your peak performance at work, and your team collaboration. Listening is a skill that can be developed, but it is also dependent on your ear organs. If they are not working right long term and you have a hearing loss then it is classified as a disability. Yep, just own it and then look to the advantage of it.
If your looking to hire one of the two point two million veterans that came back from the Middle East War. You not only get tax credit for hiring a vet, but also for hiring someone with a disability.
You get preferred seating when going to events. You do have to ask for it in advance or need to come early.
Get pre boarding privileges when flying or any other type of public transportation. Alaskan Airline was given a demo about Live Transcribe on the way to Maui. On the way back they used this app on a mobile phone to let me read that they knew I had a hearing loss and they would come get me if there was an emergency and let me read what would I like to drink. It was beyond marvelous. Not having to struggle with wondering what the announcements for my section for boarding was and having to mull thru a crowd. I wore my Has Hearing Loss Decal, so the other passengers would see that I have this disability.
I ask servers, retail, and business associates to speak into the Live Transcribe app as it makes my life easier
You can go to the Rose Bowl Parade for Free, Just have to apply early.
Title I requires employers with 15 or more employees to provide qualified individuals with disabilities an equal opportunity to benefit from the full range of employment-related opportunities available to others Some sources do say 25 employees.
Let’s make it a positive change as we have all been through enough lately as in the last three years. Helping Businesses to Grown and People to Thrive with hearing loss and other disabilities.

It's the 21st Century it could be equal access as 2.2 million veterans came back with hearing loss and 20% of the population has some type of hearing loss. Educational Business is BIG, yet they selective serve those where the parents are advocates for the child that has a known hearing loss. 1 in 5 Americans has hearing loss according to a study by Dr. Frank Lin of Johns Hopkins Univerity with a Ph.D. from Bloomberg School of Public Health.

Bret Schanzenbach, CEO, and President of the Carlsbad Chamber grew up in California. Which he calls the "biggest melting pot in America". He had a Samoan buddy that lived across the street that he walked to school with daily and played with since they were neighbors. Bret never considered himself with "white privilege", until he heard about a mom and grandmothers having to talk black sons about how to behave if they were pulled over by white police. Bret said the issues that the blacks have been dealing with are a lot like the issues that those with hearing impairments are dealing with. Until one walks in another's shoes, one does not know what it's like and that businesses need to be educated about what's needed for those with hearing loss.
The hearing-impaired community is worth $1.7 trillion dollars that has the option to go elsewhere if businesses do not provide a communicator or better known as a transparent mask. Find out more on:

- Bret has the classification of an IOM. An IOM is a distinction that's particular to the Chamber Industry. It's a program created by the US Chamber of Commerce to help increase the professionalism in the chamber world, and it technically stands for the Institute of Organizational Management. It's a four summer program where one learns different aspects of managing a nonprofit from executive finance, budgeting, managing events, working with a non-profit board, and helping your chamber be extremely successful.

“Listening is the ability to accurately receive and interpret messages in the communication process. Listening is the key to all effective communication.” Which is an ADA requirement for those with hearing loss that wear hearing aids? That I like to call a hearing medical prosthetic device. Yes, it’s a mind shift idea. The word aid has HIV connotations in this century, as a sexually transmuted disease. So, perhaps it’s time to think of them as what the computers that are a man-made ear device that is replacing a broken body part in the ear organs that makes listening possible with the hearing organ being upgraded after then have been broken as hearing medical prosthetic devices. Yes, then the insurance companies would have to probably pay for them, but there is nothing cosmetic about them in my opinion even if they are hidden within the ear. Be proud that you are still functioning in the hearing culture like the deaf are proud that they have their Deaf Culture.
So, what is hearing verses listening right from the Merriam-Webster defines hearing as the “process, function, or power of perceiving sound; specifically: the special sense by which noises and tones are received as stimuli.” Listening, on the other hand, means “to pay attention to sound; to hear something with thoughtful attention; and to give consideration
“Without the ability to listen effectively, messages are easily misunderstood. Effective listening is a skill that underpins all positive human relationships.” That last part is from Listen Skills| SkillsYouNeed that will be referenced in the show notes. I’d like to expand that to say effective listening is necessary for all two-way communication where there are a talker and a listener where both parties equally exchange their messages even if it’s nothing more than acknowledgment from an employee to their manager or supervisors. Here is a few proactive tips even if you do not have hearing loss to help the other person really feel heard.

- Did I hear you say _______? It’s always important to verify. Especially if you have a hearing loss.

There is nothing wrong with telling the other person on the conversation that you have hearing loss. It usually evokes a “let me help and tell me how response”

Do wear your medical prosthetic devices and if you don’t have them in then tell the other person as it courtesy in excellent manners also know as social conduct these days.
“Listening means paying attention not only to what’s being said but how it’s being said, looking for those non-verbal cues. Listening is not a passive process and you’ll find many a successful person has stated that it has been their listen that they attribute to their success in life.
Richard Branson of Virgin Airlines:
“Being a good listener is absolutely critical to being a good leader; you have to listen to the people who are on the front line.”
Spare brain time – Spare brain time is the difference between the rate at which most people speak (120 to 150 words a minute) and the rate at which the brain can process language (400 to 800 words a minute. Another way to think of it is “the difference between the rate at which most people talk and the rate at which the brain can process language”
Active listening is a skill that can be acquired and developed with practice. ... 'Active listening' means, as its name suggests, actively listening. That is fully concentrating on what is being said rather than just passively 'hearing' the message of the speaker. Active listening involves listening with all senses. To sum all that up it is to “giving undivided attention to a speaker in a genuine effort to understand the speaker's point of view” straight for the Art of Public Speaking.
Yes, listening is complex. One of my favorite types of listening is giraffe listening also known as compassionate listening. There is a YouTube presentation where Oprah Winfred interviews Oprah Winfrey talks with Thich Nhat Hanh Excerpt - Powerful. Where he talks about compassionate communication.
NVC uses two animals as symbols. The giraffe is the land animal with the biggest heart and stands for compassionate communication. The second animal is the jackal, representing competition. Jackal language is about judging, criticizing, analyzing, moralizing and accusing. When we feel unfairly treated, accused or when we want to impose our wishes, we tend to use the language of the jackal. Jackal language is separating. Giraffe language is unifying.
Jackal: “She is so rude.”
Giraffe: “When I said “hello”, she looked in another direction.”
Jackal:“Ed is not at all able to manage his team.”
Giraffe: “Ed has explained the new strategy and has been interrupted several times by Dana and Darcy.”

There was an African American or Black man who was on TV during the beginning of Pride Month in June. He had a shelf behind him that was a tarnish elegant gold with a bouquet of pink roses on his right and to tall blue vases over his left shoulder. That to me was a non-verbal communication where he was not just showing off a beautiful arrangement, but that he was balanced in his communication, way of life, and then as I listened and watched this man on TV he was controlled, disciplined and clear in his communication.
Communication is so much more than just speaking and hearing words. We with hearing loss are taking in the whole picture of what one is saying, how they are saying it, and what the entire environment is like is a projection of whether that person has credibility in the minds of those with hearing loss.
Here are some tips as to approach Zoom or other virtual meetings where one is being recorded in their home office or home to help the hard of hearing.

Have lighting on your face. Boliful lighting source that’s on Amazon or you can just take a lamp or three pole lighting source with cool daylight led which lights up any room like the sun is shining. This will help lighten depression as well as make you look like a media star on Zoom. For ADA compliance they recommend that lighting sources be at 500 lux. The 400 is great for a home source.

Speak in a 4 count beat. Like Stay Alive by the Bee Gee’s.

Check with Zoom to offer captioning to include the Deaf for ADA compliance
Here are some other suggestions for better communication both on the screen and off.
- Pause when you’ve ask if there are any questions to give the hard of hearing person time to catch up.
- If you are hard of hearing on a virtual call. Physical raise your hand to let the host know you have a question, either you the deaf applause where you raise your hands above your head and wave them back and forth or physically put your hands together and clap if the sound on your virtual media is turned off. People do need acknowledgment these days.
- Ask before you ask. That is ask the team if now is a great time to ask that question before you ask. If you have a 1000 people on the Zoom connection it is hard to give attention to a hard of hearing person. So, ask that they ask their question in chat or comments and if they are comfortable with their face being shown if it is a hard of hearing question that’s being addressed.

Most people that are hard of hearing are traditionally sensitive, so be kind. The tone of your voice has so many different implications in communication. “Just go to your table with your coffee”. Could be interrupted as demeaning. Use active communication. Teresa did you hear me say that you are spilling your coffee? We are all stressed these days. It’s just part of the pandemic experience.

Be curious what does the other person have going on and having said that be tactful. For emotional intelligence it is best not to say anything if you cannot say something nice, kind and upliftings. I personally do not believe that silence is always golden. Sometimes it is abusive if used to cut the other person off. As many have learned during the COVID experience isolation does strange things to the mind
I personally decided to invest MindMovies by Natalie Ledwell during this time. Where she has gratitude, love & abundance, family & friends, positivity, and wealth mindset on her Youtube channel that has music for subliminal mind conditioning, pictures with captioning for those that needed it in written form and a great picture to help one visualize. She captures almost the senses with her presentations. I can imagine tasting and smelling the cleanest of the cars she presents.

This is an excerpt for Healthy Hearing, which is a great source for information on hearing loss and is run as a non-profit.
“The invention of the telephone combined with the practical application of electricity in the 19th century had a tremendous impact effect on the development of hearing aids and other assistive hearing devices. People with hearing loss quickly realized they could hear a conversation better through the telephone receiver held up to their ear than they could in person. However, Thomas Edison, who experienced hearing loss firsthand, saw room for improvement. In 1870 he invented a carbon transmitter for the telephone which amplified the electrical signal and increased the decibel level by about 15 decibels (dB). Although an amplification of about 30 dB is usually necessary to allow those with hearing loss to hear better, the invention of the carbon transmitter for the telephone paved the way for the technology that would eventually be used for carbon hearing aids”
So, let’s give it up for Thomas Edison, The Father of Hearing Aids, and a person with hearing loss that saw a need and started the ball rolling for improvements to make the world a better place for those with hearing loss. For you Dad’s out there that have children with hearing loss. Here is a hero for your child to look up to. Mr. Edison when on to invent 16 other inventions other than his claim to fame - electricity. He took a disability and looked to see how he could improve the world. It’s you dad’s, mom’s and the village that raises a child to help keep the self-esteem up for the child who already has hearing loss, because they do see the world differently than child with normal hearing
Just so the world will stay somewhat balanced let’s take a look at some of the diseases that cause childhood hearing loss:

Just like COVID, hearing loss for people who have never dealt with it is an uncharted territory and not all pediatricians all well versed in this field of medicine. We have Google these days. So there is nothing wrong with googling what your baby or child has then questioning the physicians judgement if your not quite sure they have it right
Otitis Media is inflammation of the middle ear. The middle ear is like the micro-chip of a computer and the balance center. So, it’s extremely important to reduce inflammation and get to the cause as soon as possible. Most children get at least one case of it before 3 1/2 years old. Sometimes there is infected odorous secretions and sometimes nothing. But if you child has these symptoms you need to take a look at this ASAP, because a day missed by not learning their language and speech can adverse affect your child’s learning for the rest of their lives
Here are the symptoms listed in the American Speech and Hearing Association article
- Inattentiveness
- Wanting the TV or other media louder than normal
- Listlessness ( that an inattentiveness is like being zoned out in the adult world. Please get to your doctor ASAP and if you go to an ER then point to Google as your source for concern that will bring your pediatrician to you if you cannot get into the office.)
- Unexplained irritability
- Pulling or scratching at the ears
Some times its weeks or days before the parents decide to act. Many because hearing has not been addressed to the public at large. However, it's time that we focus on a body part that is the gateway to both physical and mental health that can have an affect on your child’s future
Acquired hearing loss is a hearing loss which appears after birth, at any time in one's life, perhaps as a result of a disease, a condition, or an injury. The following are examples of conditions that can cause acquired hearing loss in children are:
- Ear infections (otitis media) (link to specific section above)
- Ototoxic (damaging to the auditory system) drugs There are over 200 ototoxic medications. Listed in the physicians desk reference is Zithromax which is the 5 day antibody that helps fight infection.
- So, if a doctor is prescribing a medication then google it right in front of them or ask them if it is ototoxic. Oto is the latin word for ear and toxic is toxic.
- Meningitis
- Measles (this is a common childhood disease, ask your doctor if there is anything you can do as a parent to prevent ear damage?
- Encephalitis
- Chicken pox
- Influenza
- Mumps - just like measles ask your doctor if any there is any ear damaging treatments in treating mumps????
- Head injury
- Noise exposure Yes remember to test the toys and keep the sound around 72 decibels which is recommended by the World Health Organization.
Unfortunately, once the ear organ is wiped out then it does not currently rebuild itself like other parts of the body. One is given two sets of ears to help with your being able to function in the world at your highest level possible.
It is not a sign of weakness warrior dad’s to get hearing aids or medical prosthetic devices for your child or for yourself. It’s a sign that one has enough confidence to acknowledge that they need this device and then wear it to assure a better place for yourself or your child in the world.
Let’s make wearing hearing aids cool like prosthetic limbs have become for the Wounded Warrior Project or the Challenged Athletes Foundation.
And little Momma’s speak up for your child as they are back in the school environment if they need a 2 or 3rd row seat as hearing loss is that invisible disability that has not yet come to the forefront of the majorities thinking process.

Virus can cause hearing loss, so put a safe mask on your child and of course have fun with it as we are all dealing with enough stress right now. Kids might not verbalize it but they feel the stress of the adults in their household or other environments. Stress makes the immune system weaker, so less likely to be able to fight diseases like COVID

- A is for arm weakness. Is the person able to raise both hands over their head?
- S is for slurred speech or sudden hard to understand difficult speech.
- T is for time to call 911. Record time, make sure potential patient is physically safe from further harm, and remain as calm as you can.
Sudden hearing loss HUM Checker: "Hum aloud to yourself. With normal hearing the sound equally in both ears. If you do this when you have a new loss of hearing in one ear, the humming will shift to one side or the other. For example, if your right ear is affected and the hum is louder in that ear, then the hearing loss, is more likely a conductive loss, and probably due to blockage from a cold or build-up ear wax. (You can simulate this effect by humming while you cover your right ear.) However, if the humming is louder in the left ear, it suggest the right ear hearing loss is due to recent nerve damage, and that requires prompt medical attention.

Ear health is important because once you damage those ear organs there is only remediation which is wearing prosthetic hearing devices like hearing aids or cochlear implants.

Teresa Barnes, RN had two meeting last week one with the regional manager for ClearCaptions here in the San Diego. The other with three women in their 50's that are concerned about two different mothers in their 80s. How they can keep them fully engaged in life as hearing loss is isolating, causes depression, might lead to cognitive decline, relationship conflict, heart problems, diabetes, and social disconnect. Today's show gives examples of modern technology to improve the lives of these women in their 80s caption phone.
Marion Downs was the pioneer who created newborn screening. She picked me up when she was 92 years old and drove me all the way from the Denver Airport to Vail, Colorado in the snow. She lovingly called me TJ and to this day I can hear her say when I offered to drive. "It's okay TJ I am use to driving in the snow and your not. Always drive 4 car lengths behind and 20 miles below the speed limit. " We got there safely, I helped promote her book to Audiologist and Otolaryngologist - "Shut Up and Live" to the attendees from the University of Colorado.

Elaine Bryan, Holistic Nutritionist, Certified Health Coach, Cancer Educator, and Registered Yoga Teacher of Body and Soul Nourishment shares what foods are great for ear health for personal experience as she has guided her own brother who has hearing loss by altering his diet. This helped alter his hearing problems to a certain degree. Understanding Hearing Loss 101 by Teresa Barnes, RN DESCRIPTIONCommunication is a two-way street. A listener and a talker. Dr. Geoffrey A. Smith, MD ENT retired from Sharp Hospital System in San Diego, California gives us this simple definition of hearing loss. "Deafness is the absence of hearing while impairment is the loss of some hearing." Many in the Deaf Culture have angry towards the wording of being called hearing impaired. The word impaired means that in this case an ear organ is broken, damaged or weakened. So, whether you are in the Deaf classification of hearing loss or have a mild, moderate, severe, or profound sense of hearing loss your broken ear organ is weakened or damaged to some degree. It has nothing to do with the person themselves. Helen Keller was a writer, lecturer, advocate, and college graduate who was deaf and blind as well. Marlee Matlin is a famous actress from "Children from the Lesser God" who is a keynote speaker, author, and very successful businesswoman. Rush Limbaugh has continued his career as a Radio Talk Host and Beethoven composed his Paino Concerto #5 as well as the Ninth Symphony when he was deaf. Those with hearing loss can do anything the hearing can do, but hear well. There are three categories of approach with the absence of hearing. - Some deaf choose to just use sign language - here in the USA it's called American Sign Language. -Oral Deaf is when they choose to use their voice. A method taught by the John Tracy Clinic in Los Angles. JTC.Org. -Bi-Bi is where ASL is used, plus the culture of the English language for better inclusion. The discussion goes on to explain what is needed for those that have mild, moderate, severe, or profound hearing loss. Welcome to the first episode of Sound Advice: A Hearing Friendly Business Podcast.
Thank you for joining me to increase your knowledge and different actions you can apply both professionally and personally about hearing awareness, the value of your ear organs, and what’s needed in the business environment for this leading communication disability that now include those who wear hearing aids or cochlear implants as well as the Deaf who have had their laws in place since 1969. The revised ADA standards can be approached proactively with Hearing Friendly Business Training from my company called HearCommunication. Get ready to hear my why, who this podcast will be of value to, and lastly what needs to change in venues and social attitude about hearing loss. As 1 in 5 Americans has hearing loss according to a Johns Hopkins Study. Taking the current USA population we with hearing loss are 65 million and you heard in the introduction we are a $1.7 trillion dollar missed market niche that is largely misunderstood and under accommodated for. Plus there is still a huge stigma around being hearing impaired. Well did you know 2.2 million Middle East Veterans came back with hearing loss? This is the same number as those in wheelchairs. These young veterans deserve an opportunity to have equal employment, equal enjoyment, and equal access to auditory inclusion.
My dad was in the Navy, so I might have lost my hearing due to the 21 gun salute, (noise is the number one cause of hearing loss) malnutrition as money was tight, (listening on upcoming episode for what foods can improve or reduce hearing loss for better ear health) or even a genetic defect as my own Aunt is Deaf. Everyone felt sorry for my Aunt being deaf, but at least her hearing loss was clearly defined and people could see and know that she had hearing loss with her using American Sign Language. No one could see, understand or know that I had hearing loss since birth. I struggled silently with it, as a child, was bullied for not using correct pronunciation, left out of group conversations as the kids pick up very early on I did not catch jokes (I just did not hear the punch line quick enough to laugh on cue and by the time my broken ear organs processed everything the crowd had said they had moved on to some other topic and I would fake it by smiling or answering totally out of context sometimes inappropriately, thereby it resulted in my being called a “dumb blonde”. As recently as 3 years ago someone called me a moron for not answering appropriately to a question ask. Well, we all know that calling someone a moron is not politically correct these days. However, it really did hurt and brought up many painful experiences growing up with a hearing loss. When my Dad was stationed in Morocco, Africa I had my first hearing test. Nothing much was done for me other than daily dictation lessons. My Dad being the proud warrior he did not want to acknowledge his princess needed to wear hearing aids. They were really almost at the ear horn stage when I was in school. At age 22 after finishing nursing school and working in the intensive care unit at the suggestion of another RN I got my first set of hearing aids. It was amazing I heard birds chirping for the first time, frogs croaking and got a GIANT BOOST IN SELF ESTEEM. So, I moved back to San Diego, California where I was born, married a cardiologist, had two children and took them and several of their little friends up to Mammoth for a winter ski break. It was here that I had a potentially life-threatening accident for not hearing a warning shout from behind. Being a former Emergency Room manager at the time I put on my research hat and discovered that I was not alone 65 million other Americans have hearing loss and if we do not do something about the hearing awareness than 900 Billion people will have hearing loss by 2050 globally. I have chosen several platforms to get this word out. Keynote speaking, I have written a book called Sound Advice: Tune Into Listening that available on Amazon and Hearing Friendly Business Training to take it to corporate for exponential growth to bring hearing awareness to the 21st century like heart health was in the 20th.
I graduated from high school in 1969, three years ago I met a young woman who graduated from a high school near me. We exchanged stories about hearing loss. Somewhere funny and somewhere downright sad. She suffered the same lack of services in the school system and the horrible bullying where one's self-esteem is eroded. And, I have met others who have been let go from jobs due to “poor job performance reviews” when it has been nothing more than lack of the right accommodations by managers.
On this show you will gain a better understanding for what’s need in public venues to improve conditions for those with hearing loss, hear from various experts, those with hearing loss that have the insider view and how businesses can increase revenue, retention, inclusion, productivity and overall better health, so less sick leave, less occupational hearing health hazards, and overall better morale for your employees thereby increasing customer service and a healthier listening lifestyle.
