Our show did air live today at 9:00 Pacific time on KSFO; Bob Tanem In The Garden with Edie Tanem is the premiere radio talk show about organic gardening, for the whole Bay Area. We took calls, and Edie played a pre-recorded interview she did with Bonsai expert George Haas about the upcoming Redwood Empire Bonsai Society Bonsai Show, which will be in Rohnert Park in August 22 and 23.

KSFO presented a "best of" broadcast for this mornings' weekly garden show, Bob Tanem In The Garden with Edie Tanem. From 2014, we are presenting two Bob Tanem Interviews, both about trees; this continues a theme started last week.
First, Bob Tanem interviews Nick Crawford from Davey Tree company. A Certified Arborist, Nick answers Bobs' questions and those of callers to the show. In the second interview, Bob talks to tree-specialist attorney at law Barri Kaplan Bonaparte. Among the subjects -- as pertinent today's ever -- discussed was, what options do you have when friendly negotiation about tree issues in the neighborhood break down. Barri is still practicing law in 2026, and of course we have someone on from Davey Tree most every year.
Bob Tanem In The Garden with Edie Tanem is the Bay Area's premiere radio talk show about organic gardening, heard live exclusively on 810 KSFO (and on KSFO.com) on Sundays at 9:00 Pacific time, and on this podcast. The podcast edition gets scrubbed of all music and most advertising in accordance with industry practice.

Our guest on Bob Tanem In The Garden with Edie Tanem this morning was perennial favorite Cal Agrifolia from the Davey Tree Company. Davey is an employee-owned certified tree care company with local offices all around the Bay, and Cal is one of those employees: a "sales arborist," Cal is one of the guys that could be dispatched to your property to diagnose your tree issues, and prescribe one of several possible remedies. Many trees can be saved even when in trouble, and when necessary of course trees can be removed. We discussed many aspects, including local pest control issues such as the recently newsworthy Glassy Winged Sharp Shooter, and we took calls from our radio audience.
This podcast edition of the show is a repeat of the original broadcast, minus all the music and most of the advertising.

This mornings' edition of Bob Tanem In The Garden with Edie Tanem was a live call-in show; old-fashioned live no net radio. We took calls about gardening stuff, we talked about next weeks' big orchid show, we talked about the weather. Folks called in with their issues and Edie Tanem -- a certified Master Gardener and a former nursery staff person -- weighed in with options and ideas to address them.
The podcast edition has been lightly edited to remove musical content and most advertising. The show airs live on Sunday mornings at 9:00 Pacific time on 810 KSFO and streaming worldwide on KSFO.com

This mornings' edition of Bob Tanem In The Garden with Edie Tanem was pre-recorded for broadcast on 810 KSFO. Edie interviewed Jeff Harris from the San Francisco Orchid Society, and Tom Perlite with Golden Gate Orchids, the main topic of course was the big show, Orchids In The Park, coming up July 25 and 26 at the County Fair Building in Golden Gate Park (1199 9th Ave).
This podcast edition contains material that exceeded our time allotment on the radio broadcast; the interview with Tom Perlite continues about 7 minutes longer in the final segment of this podcast edition. The interview nevertheless concludes prematurely due to their internet call getting disconnected, not to be restored. The podcast edition is also edited to remove musical content and the majority of the advertising.

Welcome to the SF Bay Area's premiere radio talk show about organic gardening; In The Garden with Edie Tanem is on the air!
Our guest this morning was Lance Walheim, a perennial favorite expert that Bob first had on over 20 years ago. That because Lance is one of Northern California's premiere experts on Citrus planting, including both commercial and back yard oranges, lemons and other citrus fruits. Lance has long had one of the authoritative books on citrus growing, but now having taken over publishing with his own Walheim Press, Citrus: A Gardeners’ and Fruit Lovers’ Guide is newly expanded an enhanced by Lance himself.
Edie and her guest spent the hour talking about the many aspects of citrus and fruit growing, but also a little reminiscing over times past. This podcast edition preserves the whole show, minus the bumper music and most of the advertising.

Our guest this week is Joe Skibbie of Beats Beds and Browns -- an interesting enterprise that puts out a video podcast focussing on music (specifically hip-hop, e.g., 'Beats'), beds (e.g., organic local gardening) and browns (small scale distilled spirits). An interesting combination of focusses, so of course one of Edie's first lines of questioning brought out from Joe what the commonality is in all of this -- and it comes down to interweaving communities. Specifically, local music, local gardening, and local liquor, and networking those communities to find common ground. Joe spent the hour with us discussing a variety of angles; give it a listen.
For the podcast edition we are obligated to edit out all of the music (and most of the ads) for your on-demand listening experience.

Good morning and happy May from all of us here at Bob Tanem In The Garden with Edie Tanem! Our guest this morning is Ben Bloom of Bloom's Wholesale Nursery -- a growing nursery supplying high-quality locally-oriented plants to non-box-store local nurseries throughout the Bay Area. Ben is from the second generation of Blooms running the nursery, and has developed a passion for native plants, which are a sub-specialty.
Edie and Ben spent the hour discussing not only the ins and outs of being a "nursery brat," growing up around plant operations; they know many of the same people - but also the many options for garden and landscaping plants we have here in the Bay Area, what some of the factors are in choosing the right ones to grow, together they unfurled some of the myths around using Native plants in your landscape.
This podcast reproduces the original radio broadcast of the show on Sunday morning; the show is heard live on KSFO 810 from 9 until 10 each Sunday in the San Francisco Bay Area, and worldwide on KSFO.com. This podcast edition has been lightly pruned to remove musical content and most adverts.

Here we are with another edition of Bob Tanem In The Garden with Edie Tanem! Todays' show featured recorded audio that Edie brought back from a visit to the Sonoma Botanical Gardens in Glen Ellen; in addition to their usual and extensive collection of plants, there are currently sculptures on display by Oaxacan artists Maria and Jacobo Angeles - the Spirit Guides exhibit will be up through Sept. 7; inspired by the Zapotec calendar, the exhibition includes eight large-scale works organized by Denver Botanic Gardens. Edie and Kristine Lindh from Sonoma Botanical Gardens gave us a brief audio tour of the colorful sculptures on display among the gardens. Following this, we took calls and Edie dispensed gardening advice for Bay Area gardeners this spring.

Our first guest this morning was Suzanne Muller, a woman of many hats at the Bonsai Garden at Lake Merritt -- a non-profit all-volunteer run garden nurturing an amazing collection of miniaturized trees in the Japanese Bonsai tradition. Top of mind is the Gardens' annual fundraiser event -- the Mammoth Auction and Sale is this coming Saturday and Sunday March 7 and 8.
Our second guest was Bonsai enthusiast and podcaster Addison Galambos. Addison is a board member at the Garden and a Bonsai "Builder" himself -- in fact he runs a podcast called the "Bonsai Builders Podcast" that is available at your favorite podcast site or on YouTube.
The rest of todays' broadcast was discussion of current gardening stuff, and listener calls. This podcast is a repackaging of our original radio broadcast on 810 KSFO; all music and most ads have been edited out.

Good morning and happy February from all of us here at Bob Tanem In The Garden with Edie Tanem...! We are joined this morning by Jeff Harris of the San Francisco Orchid Society, here to talk up the 2026 Orchid Exposition he'll be presiding over at the SF County Fair building in Golden Gate Park, starting Thursday Feb. 26 and running through Sunday March 1. Jeff reminded us of just how fabulous an event this is for anyone interested in orchids; whether seeing the best on display or actually buying plants at the marketplace they include at the event. And as Jeff further pointed out, this is a terrific time of year to take a walk among some of the other park attractions that are right there, as well as the area's abundant walk-up restaurants.
In the second half of the show we took calls from our live audience; this podcast is a repeat of the actual broadcast at 9:00 local time in San Francisco on 810 KSFO; the musical interludes and the bulk of the adverts have been lifted out for your protection.

It's Bob Tanem In The Garden with Edie Tanem, the podcast edition -- featuring this weeks' guest, show favorite Ed Laivo, known to the Interwebs as Ed Able of Ed Able Solutions -- which is the name of his YouTube channel of many years. The subject? Fruit Trees! Ed is an expert on this subject, and on citrus in particular. Today Edie and Ed discussed among other things the trend toward summer pruning to keep trees lower; in addition to keeping the fruit where you can reach it, keeping your trees to 7 feet or below also enables putting a grow cover over them to disrupt pests at key times, and causes the trees to require less water -- without materially affecting production volume. Ed works with a number of growers and nurseries in the California central valley, and recently re-wrote the "Back Yard Orchard Culture" feature on Dave Wilson Nursery's web site (the first time that article was updated in many years). Ed makes a wonderful guest, and the hour flies by.

It's America's happiest gardening show, Bob Tanem In The Garden with Edie Tanem. We broadcast live on 810 am KSFO on Sunday mornings at 9:00; sometimes we have a guest but some days -- today, for example --we just take calls and talk about stuff in, around and for the garden.
Concerned about recent cold snaps? The tip of the day came from caller Neil at the very end of the show, who suggested "heat tape" -- a product originally designed for use to prevent pipes from freezing, it plugs in to 110 power and comes on automatically at 38° F, and shuts off at 40° F. Neil says you can put it at the base of trees or wherever you're concerned about frost damage. Of course Edie reiterated Bob's old trick of using incandescent holiday light strings for a similar purpose, though those are getting harder to find; LEDs don't produce enough heat to help.

Our guest this morning on Bob Tanem In The Garden with Edie Tanem is Kenny Phillips, certified arborist with Davey Tree company. Davey is our go-to source for up-to-date, less toxic expert tree care; they are a national company but it is employee owned; the employees bought out the founding Davey family back in 1979. There are several offices around the Bay Area where listeners can arrange for an arborist to come out and evaluate a tree at no charge (some conditions apply).
Kenny spent the better part of the hour with us talking about several aspects of tree care and lifecycle management. Also discussed are a variety of options for dealing with post-use Christmas trees. We also took a call or two from the audience, with questions for Kenny.

Our special guest this morning was Tamara Jo Hicks, co-author of the Feasts on the Farm cookbook along with Jessica Lynn MacLeod. This is a homegrown recipe book out of the Tomales neighborhoods of West Marin, where Tamara and her husband run a goat and sheep milk outfit called Toluma Farms. Sourced from locals, and with a foreword by Alice Waters, the recipes in this book come with stories and pictures, making this a beautiful work of art, featuring artistic culinary creations using local ingredients. The book is available at local bookstores and and select Bay Area farmers' markets.

Our guest on the garden show -- Bob Tanem In The Garden with Edie Tanem -- this morning is Dan Posey. Dan was a colleague and sometimes competitor with Bob Tanem in the nursery business, they met competing with their show gardens at the Marin and Sonoma county fairs many years ago. Edie has known Dan since she was, well, a lot younger.
These days, Dan is with Oaks of Hebron, a non-profit service agency in Sonoma County, and he is mentoring a new startup nursery in Sebastopol called Growing Together Nursery, which complements Growing Together Farm and other endeavors. The nursery is located at the former California Carnovores retail location at 2833 Old Gravenstein Highway in Sebastopol, and is open Tuesdays through Thursdays from 9:00 am to 4:30 pm, and on Saturday from 8:00 to 4:30 pm. and is open to the public. Dan reminisced with Edie about old times, county fairs, and then talked about their more recent endeavors.
Of seasonal interest, Dan is offering an old-fashioned Christmas Wreath making workshop; there are public workshops at the nursery, and for groups of about 10 or more, Dan will do a private class -- either at the nursery, or wherever the party is. Materials and instructions are included, and participants will leave with a hand made wreath.

This years' edition features some minor changes to reflect Sandi's touch, but as always the Almanac has stories, anecdotes, seasonal and calendar items, and more. Trivia buffs will especially love this publication -- published annually since the 1800's -- because it's full of fun facts.
Sandi spent the hour with us and gave us a glimpse under the curtain for how the book is curated and the thought processes that are behind it. The 2026 edition went onsite at farmersalmanac.com and on grocery checkout stands everywhere; it's the orange and green one.

Welcome to Bob Tanem In The Garden with Edie Tanem; the Bay Area's premier radio talk show about organic gardening! We featured 2 guests this morning; a quick visit with Jeff Harris of the San Francisco Orchid Society talking about their upcoming Orchids in the Park event; next weekend -- July 26 and 27 -- at the SF County Fair building in Golden Gate Park, will be the big show and sale event by our local orchid society.
Next up Edie interviewed Kenny Philips with Davey Tree Service. Kenny brought us up to date on what's going on with trees for streets and landscapes, and highlighted some of the pests and diseases that Davey is seeing out there in helping homeowners and other property stewards with their tree issues -- including recommendations for new trees! (hint: he really likes Chinese Pistache).
In the last 3rd of the program this morning we also took calls, mostly about trees. There were audio issues with the host link during the first half of the show that were overcome in the 2nd half. This podcast is a presentation of the original over-the-air broadcast on 810 KSFO; the music has been trimmed out as have most of the ads.

Welcome to Bob Tanem In The Garden with Edie Tanem - the Bay Area's premier radio talk show about organic gardening in the Bay Area!
This morning Edie interviewed a guest, Jim Salyard of Filoli, to talk about what's going on at the famous Garden and Mansion a few miles south of San Francisco. What's currently large and looming in the gardens is Thomas Danbo's larger-than-life Trolls exhibit. These are gigantic, oversized "garden trolls" that are part of a larger story weaved by the artist; they're on display in various places in the Filoli grounds through November of this year as part of their "Save the Humans" world tour.
We also featured audio that Edie recorded on-site of the artist, Thomas Danbo, talking about his work and this exhibit, the Trolls and their story, and more about the "world tour" they are engaging upon.
