Project Circle Up: Recent Episodes

Jonathan Andrews

Conceived out of the global crisis that is the state of our men's mental health, Project Circle Up exists to lift men out of the metaphorical basement. Addiction, inaction and purposelessness wreak havoc on our men's wellbeing and rob the world of their unique contribution and gifts. We are a group of leaders who're committed to empowering men globally in becoming self-sufficient, finding and living their purpose, and becoming the men they've always wanted to be.

Our goal: men no longer struggle in silence or just "man up" but instead are empowered to turn to community, to Circle Up!

As we reflect on all of the struggle, adversity, hate, fear, and loss of 2021 as well as all of the connection, hope, faith, new friends and relationships, serendipity, adventure, and love, this New Years Eve I took the opportunity to watch and listen to one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, Impact 2021.

What is Impact 2021? This short audio clip provides that context and sets up the next 5-10 episodes where we took live speakers, audience members, and strangers from our in-person experience and brought them into the podcast booth to talk about leadership, life, and social impact.

Huge shoutout goes to my boy Iain Gabriel, our brother Michael Miller from the Spin Frequency Podcast, Greg Founder of Eagles Nest on lake Atitlan Guatemala and all of our friends and community who came together to make this event and therefore these podcasts possible.

If you want to skip the context and jmump straight into the conversation tune into episode 1 of IMPACT 2021 up next!

Round 2 of I hope many, with the one and only Avi Nakash. Nakash has decades of experience working in men's work and in helping coach men on the difference between men and women.

A lot of this conversation goes against a lot of the PC narratives we have today about whats acceptable to talk about and I'm very happy to release this into the world.

Let's start thinking critically again... let's not be so quick to get offended with someone who has a different opinion or world view... let's see what we can learn, or re-learn about ourselves as a human race and get back to the basics of what works.   Love this episode and love you all. Thank you again for doing this part two Avi.

Bill Burdette is Chairman and CEO of Impact Deposits Corp.(IDC), President of its affiliated law firm, Charity Services Centers, P.A. and founder of a non-profit organization Center of Social Change, Inc.

With over 30 years of experience in corporate finance and investment banking, you would have expected us to jump right into contracts, how to know if an investment is worthwhile or how to start a charity.... but we didn't.

And I'm thrilled that we didn't. Instead today you get to take advantage of intergenerational mentorship from a man who is 74 years old, made millions in his life, and has managed much much more. He sheds light on what he thinks his death will look like, how he overcame cancer, and on the importance of curiosity.

Personally, it couldn't have been better timing for me to meet Bill as our conversation gave me a literal shift in how I think about the world and how I know that it has my back and is conspiring in my favour. Everything is unfolding for a reason and I'm grateful for the obstacles that have been presented in my path so as to learn and be more aware.

Thank you Bill for doing the show and sharing your wisdom with us. Excited for round 2 soon! And thank you to our continued supporting listeners for sharing, subcribing, and most importantly implementing these lessons in your life.

I went out on a limb reaching out to TJ to be a guest on the show. He’s a highly sought after authority in the field of healing and performance with over 20 years of professional and experimental experience. He has an incredibly popular podcast aimed at deconstructing many of the misconceptions and often times lies we’ve been sold about health and our nature as humans. And after listening to his show and consistently being exposed to his truth and philosophy over instagram I knew I needed to work with him on the personal challenges I’ve experienced with injury and trauma in the last decade.

After our session we created a plan to follow and I know without a shadow of a doubt that TJ is a man who not only has a great philosophy but walks his talk and embodies his words. I have full faith that as I commitment myself, take full ownership of the choices I’ve made, and execute the plan we’ve created, I will fully heal from my personal challenges and be even stronger than I was before my injuries.

This podcast is for you if you’ve experienced injuries or trauma in the past like me and have been unable to heal and come back stronger than you were before the injury.

If you you know there’s an area of your life that isn’t working and you’ve yet to be able to take full responsibility for changing it.

Or if you’re losing faith that you’ll ever be able to overcome your circumstances and enjoy your life again. I’ve been there. I’m with you on this journey. I know how herd it is to keep your hope and faith alive.

So tune into this episode and bathe your mind in inspiration, possibility, and the truth about your nature and infinite capacity to heal. You can do this. We believe in you.

This topic is the most important in my life right now and I can't wait to see how our lives transform over the next 12-36 months practicing these philosophies.

I love you guys.

If you've ever felt like you couldn't be fully self-expressed, are lying to yourself and the world about who you truly are, and are searching for a role model of a man who's found people and community who embrace and love him for who he truly is, this is the podcast for you.

I strongly believe that this episode featuring Mike Sagun, who teaches stressed out men how to find calm in their lives, is a turning point for the Circle Up Podcast. A shedding of our old skin and a leveling up in our commitment to serving men, their families, and our communities. Mike is an absolute super star and we know that his authentic presence here sharing his story of rejection and masking his true identity before being fully embraced as a man is a true testament to the power of this work and we couldn't be more grateful to have him share his expertise, passion, and actionable best practices with us.

Mike is a certified professional men’s coach. He has a BA in Education and spent 10 years as a teaching artist coaching young people. He trained with Challenge Day, Lincoln Center Education in NYC, Bi-Jingo, Co-Active Training Institute (CTI), and EVRYMAN. In 2017, Mike delivered a TEDx Talk about the significance for young people to have trusted adults in their lives. Recognizing the impact and importance of deep emotional health propelled him into his coaching career. After graduating from CTI, Mike launched his coaching practice with the purpose of creating safe spaces for men to think deeply about themselves and develop emotional awareness. Since then, Mike has partnered with companies like DropBox, LinkedIn, Google, Kaiser Permanente, TATLAB, BBXX, and Saje Wellness. Mike also partners with EVRYMAN, where he hosts men’s groups, facilitates men’s retreats, and coaches men in the community.

The foundation of Mike’s work is based in somatics and emotional awareness. He guides and teaches men to return to their bodies through breathwork, meditation, and powerful open ended questions that inspire self-discovery. When men learn to slow down and listen to their intuition, their internal wisdom becomes more accessible. From here, men respond to their lives constructively rather than reacting destructively.

Like and subscribe if you found an idea worth sharing as it helps to get this show into the eyes and minds of young people everywhere.

And as always, till next time

Julian is an innovation consultant and entrepreneur, specializing in wellness and fitness. He balances his time between international management consulting, corporate wellness education, and executive fitness coaching. Julian’s expertise focuses on business strategy, design thinking, program development, and community facilitation. He thoroughly enjoys mentorship and social impact projects. His approach is holistic, heart-centric, and high impact. At the time of our recording he was living in Puerto Viejo Costa Rica and is now back in Toronto, Canada.

In episode #57 of the Circle Up Podcast we shared an intimate conversation overlooking the ocean from Julians mountain perched wood lodge in Costa Rica. We shared stories from our lives and discussed ideas to help you do fewer things deeper. To slow down and to enjoy being fully present with your life. Julian also shares wisdom from his personal expertise in wellness about:

  • the importance of vitality and three acronyms he uses as a framework for his life philosophy

  • the three areas of your life that you actually CAN control

  • and his personal takeaways about presence and productivity from a near drowning experience

We hope you enjoy this heart centered conversation and that it provokes in you introspection about how and why you do what you do, to know the difference between output and outcome in your life, and to get you asking yourself what truly matters and what truly makes you happy. We recorded this interview in the jungle and so you will hear crickets and monkeys and birds and if you're watching on youtube you will see the sun slowly fade into the night.

To you, Julian, thank you for your brotherhood and for living and breathing your values. I appreciate you as a role model in my life.

To you, our listeners, thank you for your continued support and we hope that you take one idea from the show and immediately implement it in your life. Our community and this platform is extremely fortunate to have the leaders of the Black Diamond Circle Up team, Mr. Anderson, an Olympic Gold Medal Coach, and Mr. Dotson, Founder of "WooYourBoo", share their wisdom on relationships, leadership, and their journeys on embracing their blackness.

Tune in this week to learn about:

  • how both men look at and approach leadership

  • de-stigmatizing men's teams and creating non-competitive environments for men

  • embracing and overcoming social and cultural biases surrounding race

I feel inspired after listening to this conversation to continue to use this platform to share the stories and voices of the men and women who're leaving this world better than we found it.

To our guests, thank you for your example and leadership. You continue to help me step up my game and find my place amongst men.

And to our dedicated listeners, thank you for embracing the Circle Up philosophy, sending us your feedback and questions, and taking action everyday towards the people you've always wanted to be.

In this radically honest episode of the Project Circle Up podcast, I share a discussion with Author, Speaker, and Host of the Men of Honor Podcast, MJ Durkin.

MJ cut the the crap and held nothing back here. He's not interested in political correctness. He's interested in men thriving. And the ripples that, that happiness and success has in marriages, families, and their communities.

He doesn't beat around the bush and is not afraid of calling you, himself, or I, out for being a pussy if we're not taking ownership of our lives. If you're a young man interested in why divorce and suicide is so common for men and how to avoid that fate, we talk about:

  • how mentors and strong male role-models are the key to mastery and success

  • how to get out of doubt and into action

  • the two step process for finding the woman of your dreams

and so much more...

This episode is for you if you like your personal development, shaken and not stirred... You may be triggered. You will likely feel uncomfortable... But I have no doubt that if you consider what's said, and use the conversation as a way of introspecting about your life as a man, you will learn something about yourself.

Please reach out if you have recommendations for the show, feedback, or questions. Your success is our success and we look forward to seeing you on the next episode of the podcast, or next circle up team!

It's season 6, and we have a new format, and exciting and innovative conversations coming your way!

This season is about highlight the well diggers. The men who took Circle Up from a "I have no idea wtf i'm doing" project with an aim of making a difference for men and changing the way we talk, think and feel about our mental health, to one of the highest quality personal development opportunities for men in the world.

Since our first Circle Up in Toronto, Canada, February 28th 2020, we've graduated 8, 8 week men's circles where we focus on honour, keeping your word, and discovering and dissolving the barriers between you and taking action on the man you've always wanted to be.

Missions like this take a village, and at Circle Up we're proud and honoured to build this community with some of the most honourable, bad ass, service driven men in the country. None of where we've come to, and most certainly none of where we will go, would be possible without the dozens of men of the brotherhood who've contributed their time, energy, and care to this community project.

To you men, this season of the podcast is dedicated.

To you men, I commit to bringing my best.

And with you men, I celebrate the difference we're making in the world.

We flip the script on this episode of the CU Podcast by exploring the nature of consciousness, the mind, and spirituality.

Personally, this conversation was stretching myself outside of my comfort zone and dove into many blind spots that I have about who I am and what is my purpose in life. Adam is a phenomenal communicator and I know you’ll enjoy insights on:

  • What it means and looks like to live at your edge
  • How to get beyond the basics needs of money, shelter and sex, onto your true purpose of selfs-actualization and expanding conscious
  • How and why to make meditation a life-long practice

I hope you’re inspired into action by this episode, or not, because after this conversation I feel as if I don’t need to rush or that I Have to do anything. Instead I can live my life powerfully as I choose to no matter what it looks like.

To Adam, thank you brother. You look, sound, and feel on purpose and I am excited to watch you continue to blossom into a man who makes a dent on the universe.

And of course, to our listeners, thank you for investing in yourself. Every decision you make in self- improvement ripples out into the world and leaves it a better place for everyone.

Feel free to DM questions for the show, recommendations for room for improvement, or to connect me to a guest you’d love to hear from. I appreciate you!

What up beautiful people!

Today we connect with badass mental health leader and changemaker, Jesse Lee Haymen. I've had the honour of knowing and becoming friends with Jesse since meeting him at the Healthy Minds Canada Silver Dinner Gala back in 2017.

Since then I've watched him and the team at jack.org change lives all around Canada and couldn't be more happy to support their work and share Jesse and the teams message. In this episode Jesse shares about:

  • how to turn frustrations into action

  • why it's okay to have no idea what you want to do with your life

  • and how to be there for loved one's when they're struggling with their mental health

These days after years of making a massive impact with both the Movember foundation as well as Jack.org, Jesse has moved on to a new role as the Chief Growth Officer at Greenspace Health.

I couldn't be more excited to watch and be part of this next chapter of impact and living his higher purpose.   If you're looking for inspiration to help you tap into your adventurous side or find and live your purpose I highly recommend tuning in to hear Jesse's empowering philosophy on turning frustrations into action and much, much more.

Much love from Santa Teresa, Costa Rica

While I’ve been enjoying my backpacking throughout North and Central America, from Mexico to the beaches of Costa Rica, I’ve been feeling a sense of doubt. A directionlessness that only finds me when I’ve taken too many steps off the path, and not enough in alignment with my purpose. Fortunately, I have men like Kurtis Gabriel in my life.

This conversation came at the perfect time. It became, and continues to be as I return to it for a 3rd time, the perspective shift I needed to get back in the driver seat in my life. In this special episode of the Circle Up Podcast we explore the career and mindsets that made professional hockey player and social activist Kurtis Gabriel the man he is today. I’ve known Kurtis and his family since his brother and I became good friends in 2014.

In this conversation, Kurtis shares passionately about:

  • The counterintuitive idea of doing hard work in order to experience inner peace
  • The importance of cultivating trusted relationships before you ever struggle with your mental wellbeing
  • Why loving what you do is the most important step in living the life of your dreams

Thanks for helping me get back on the court, Kurtis. You continue to inspire me and thousands of others to be kind and to leave the world better than we found it. I look forward to many more conversations as well as many more years of watching you change the world.

To our listeners, I appreciate your dedication to the show. I appreciate your dedication to men’s mental health. And I appreciate you being on your own path to the person you've always wanted to be. We’re either growing or we’re dying and I hope you’ll agree that your mindset and life was improved by tuning into this weeks episode.

In one of our last episodes of season 5 of the Circle Up Podcast we interview the Middle Easts Mental Health Ambassador, Ally Salama.

I’ve been lucky to get to know and befriend Ally over the last year as he’s both the founder of empower-mag.com, the first Mental Health Magazine in the Middle East, winning Harvard's Top 7 Most Impactful Social Initiatives in 2019 & earning recognition from the World Health Organization. As well as the host for Apple’s #1 Charting Youth Leadership Mental Health Podcast “Empathy Always Wins”.

On this episode we explore the life-changing moments that made Ally the man he is today:

  • What it was like being stabbed at the age of 15
  • How he’s coped and worked through a mental illness diagnosis
  • And now, his vision for mental health for Men and for mental health in the Middle East

Ally, if there’s one thing you’ve taught me it’s that enthusiasm is contagious. You have an energy and passion in the way you show up in the world that’s truly magnetizing. I know without a shadow of a doubt that you have what it takes to make a real difference in the world. I can’t wait to watch you continue to soar and dent the universe with your heart and vision.

In this episode of the circle up podcast we’re proud to highlight one of our founding members, John Pereira.

John has been instrumental in the original support and on-going leadership of our programming. And it’s obvious that we wouldn’t be nearly as successful if it wasn’t for him.

In this episode he shares openly about:

How his ego killed his first relationship (16 mins)

Why he’s been so successful in his current marriage (29 mins)

How come he’s so committed to the circle up community (48 mins)

It was a true pleasure to share your insight with the world, John. It takes real strength to admit the times when we weren’t at our best, and even more, to learn from those mistakes and become a better man for ourselves and our communities. You have done both.. And for that reason I’m proud to call you a brother and a positive role model in my life.

I look forward to many more years of leadership and service by your side!

This special edition of the circle up Podcast was recorded over 6 months before its release.

Why?

Because originally this audio was forever lost in the void, never to be seen again! When businesses were closing down and millions of people lost their jobs, I was one of them. This podcast, along with half a dozen others, where located on a cloud server attached to my workplace.

*Homer Simpson "Doh" moment for real!

Fortunately, as you’ll hear in this recording, this ain’t Shane Tyler Milson’s first rodeo. He recorded the audio his side and alas we have audio!

I’m ecstatic this episode was recovered because Shane speaks to a lot of the challenges myself and a lot of young people struggle with. Together we discussed:

  • How the intersections of your passions is the key ingredient to unlocking the edge effect and creating a meaningful business and life @ 27 mins
  • What it means to tap into your intuition, how to trust your gut and why you should love your life and feel good now @ 35 and beyond
  • Instant gratification vs delayed gratification and how to balance both to live a fulfilling life @ 45 mins

Bonus* shoutout to Puddle Boy @abdu at 17 mins lol love you abdu.

In this episode, Mr. Shane Tyler Milson reminded me that everything I seek is already available to me. That all of the clues I need are present if I just open my eyes. And that there’s nothing stopping me from loving my life and feeling good now.

Senor, your energy and enthusiasm for life fills me with a desire to have more fun, be myself and live in the moment.

This podcast was a long-time coming - I know our listeners will be inspired to trust themselves - and I hope that this is just the beginning of our friendship.

In this episode of the Circle Up Podcast, we learn from one of the deepest reservoirs Canada has on how to be successful in committed relationships.

I come out of most of my conversations with Steve Richmond completely convinced that I'm dramatically underqualified for a committed partnership. And have a long way to go before being self-sufficient and knowing my terms.

He’s mentored me, and hundreds of other men and woman I know personally, and his results are so profound with his clients in, “The Relationship Workout” that virtually all his business is from referrals.

If you’re looking for harmonious success than look no further. In this episode we cover:

  • How Steve’s men’s circle helped him take ownership of the failures in his marriage
  • Why he decided to invest his time and energy into growing circle up
  • What you and I need to do to prepare ourselves as well as to be successful in with our romantic relationships

Thanks for being on the show, and such an important role model in my life, Richmond.

Circle Up exists because

  • Globally, every minute a man dies by suicide
  • 75% of suicides in Canada are men
  • We’re conditioned to be strong and man up when we’re struggling instead of circling up and checking in with our men

The probable almost certain future

  • If we don’t do anything about it men are going to continue to struggle in silence
  • They’ll sit in the basement thinking they need to confront their challenges alone
  • We’ll keep losing good men to suicide

On this show we're committed to changing that. We're committed to changing the way we think, feel and talk about men's mental health and to give men the tools they need to be better fathers, sons and husbands.

Take these tools, implement them, and as you make progress towards the man you've always wanted to be, pass on the lessons.

A man in your life needs your gift as a committed listener.

The gift of a safe space.

The gift of knowing that someone gives a damn, that someone loves you unconditionally.

In this short episode we dive together into the tipping point.

At a fundamental level, there are two forces that motivate us to do what we do: the desire to avoid pain or the desire to gain pleasure. Taking action and making a change isn't a matter of ability, it's a matter of motivation. When change is a should, most people won't make the change. If change is a must, it's another story!

The tipping point makes taking action a must.

Let's explore your tipping point together and get you into massive action with the new year around the corner.

"Fluctuations are an inherent fabric of life. The Buddhist law of impermanence states that because nothing is permanent, attachment to the ups leads to inevitable suffering. Conversely, aversion to the downs is illogical because those too shall pass".

When I experience malaise or any sadness and difficulty, I only have to travel back to this night in 2017 to regain to footing.

Use this podcast and the law of impermanence as your reminder that no matter what you're going through right now, with time, it too shall pass.

The mind and brain are extremely complex.

My mentor George Zalucki, however,  broke it down for me so that it is simple to explain. He said the mind is made up of two parts, the thinker and the prover.

The thinker thinks.

The prover proves.

What does the prover prove? Simple, whatever the thinker thinks!

This episode will teach you how to use your thinker to your advantage and begin to attract into your life all that your thinker can dream of.

In a world of Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook, where we obsessively check our social platforms all day long, where "entrepreneurship" and the "hustle" is romanticized, I've been working hard because I want more likes. I've been working to impress others. I've been trying to look good in front of people who's opinions shouldn't even matter to me. It's vain.

The intention of this episode is to use me as a mirror for how you've been showing up this year.

Have you been focused on what you can contribute?

How much impact you're making?

Serving your purpose?

Or have you allowed those focuses to fall to the wayside as, like me, you've fallen prey to the seduction of recognition and vanity fulfillment.

Let's turn this corner together and run into the new year with a renewed outlook on how we're showing up in life.

A mentor once told me that there are three types of people: wise, smart and stupid.

Wise- these people have a huge advantage. They are the type of people who learn from other peoples mistakes.

Smart- these people tend to get ahead. They are the type of people who learn from their ownmistakes.

Me- stupid people...well.... they just keep making the same mistakes over and over and over again.

This podcast is an opportunity for you to be wise through the retelling of the stupidity that led to me being homeless.

In 2017, my good friend Ryan and I implemented our first mastermind / accountability system. The results were more than we ever expected and here's a quick sneak peak into what happened, "what seemed unreasonable and even impossible with my busy schedule, quickly became a reality in every weekly accountability call with Ryan. With 9 speeches under my belt today and my final speech scheduled for Tuesday March 14th, I will officially have completed my goal with two weeks to spare!"

Today after delivering hundreds of speeches I feel so much gratitude for those early days. We both hope you're instilled with a desire to set up a similar structure in your own life as I break down step by step, exactly how we did it in this podcast.

Enjoy and happy accountability!

Too often, the biggest gap in people's lives, is the gap between what you know you should be doing and what you take action on.

This, I believe, is a result of people that are not being held accountable for their word.

The American Society of Training and Development (ASTD) did a study on accountability and found that you have a 65% of completing a goal if you commit to someone. And if you have a specific accountability appointment with a person you’ve committed, you will increase your chance of success by up to 95%.

Lack of accountability on the other hand is dangerous. For most people it leads to a life of waiting, pondering. and contemplating. Without action, without accountability, it's understandable why millions of brilliant, creative and well meaning people never accomplish their hearts greatest desires.

Take heed of this episode, it has the potential, if applied, to change your life forever.

This year, they arrived at a shelter for the poor and destitute. That day he witnessed the suffering of a young boy who was strapped to a chair, clothes soiled, body injured and hungry, without a fraction of the privilege his family was fortunate enough to experience.

Shocked by the injustice and inspired by seva, meaning selfless service, a key principle of Sikhism, Rohan stepped into the possibility of inspired action in service of others.

In this episode we connect with Atlantic Canadian Investor, Tyler Sellars, who went from $0 in savings to over $1,000,000 of real estate holdings in less than 10 months. As the founder of Real Estate Investing Canada, a private facebook group to share wins and to have your questions about real estate answered, Tyler encourages anyone with curiosity about investing to participate in the discussion and learn more about an industry that created financial freedom for his future in less than 12 months.

After seeking mentors and making logical decisions that led to the purchase of over 5 properties, you’ll see why knowing your “magic number”, the amount of $ you need to make per month to walk away from your job, has Tyler so gripped by life and excited to share his learning with you.

We hope this episode is exactly what you needed to get out of doubt and into action.
