What we learn:

  • Is Kentucky in the South?

  • TN created a rating system for CWD risk among their counties that correctly predicted the most likely place for it to appear, Unfortunately, it was too late
  • We are not all going to die from zombie deer and scientists have not been able to show that CWD could cross the species barrier to humans
  • Bucks labeled as "movers" are 81% more likely to be killed by hunters than bucks labeled as "sedentary"
  • Deer have been shown to breed in Florida every month but May
  • Planting native grasses could be a waste of money
  • Rainfall can have a large impact on antler growth in dry areas, and effects can last the life of a buck
  • Mowing clover fields is a waste of time
  • Coyotes and other predators kill a ton of fawns in N. Georgia

We dive into GPS whitetail deer tracking studies with respected biologists, looking at how weather affects deer movement. You may be shocked at what they have to say about it. We also talk to experienced hunters about how weather affects their hunting strategies and how this information will affect them in the future.

Part one begins with Spencer Neuharth of Rut Fresh and the Wired to Hunt Rut Radio. Next up is our own Adam Crews with how weather affects his hunting. He is followed by Will Brantley, the hunting editor at Field and Stream and Outdoor Life and Jeff Gienke of the Hunting Beast.

Then we look at GPS tracking studies with Dr. Bronson Strickland of the MSU Deer Lab and Dr. Stephen Webb of the Noble Institute. Their observations may totally change when and where you hunt.

Part 2 will continue the series with Dr Duane Diefenbach of the Penn State Deer Forest Study Group and Lindsay Thomas Jr., editor of Quality Whitetails magazine and communications director at the QDMA.

For a different perspective we talk to the Mad Scientist of deer hunting, Mark Drury, about how weather impacts his hunting strategies. Finally we will wrap up the series by circling around to the hunters we spoke with at the beginning to see if this will impact the way they hunt.

We talk with Tony Smotherman about hunting out-of-state whitetails, public land hunts, strategies, tactics and more.

Residing in Tennessee, but long known as the Travelin' Hunter®, Tony comes to this title honestly, averaging 15,000 miles in the Spring and Fall in search of critters all across this great land. Traveling to hunt is his passion, and has been his way of life for over 20 years.

Tony's career has included numerous professional associations with some of the most respected companies in the outdoor industry. He has been a mainstay on both TV and various entertainment and educational video productions such as the safety and instructional DVD's included with every Knight Rifle sold during the Iowa company's final six years. He now co-hosts the safety and instructional videos for the number one muzzleloader builder in the country, CVA, and also manages their National Pro-Staff.

Most recently, Tony has been behind the wheel and in front of the camera hosting his show titled..yep..you guessed it..Travelin' Hunter® where he highlights great hunting locations along with the unique characters or settings of the region. In times past, Tony has also been the commercial spokesperson for several products that he used and trusted throughtout his hunting career. Commercial endorsements were created for Barnes Bullets, The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, and The National Wild Turkey Federation. He is also is the public face for bear hunting for the Newfoundland Board of Tourism.

Along with all of his other duties, Tony is also considered a notable land management and real estate expert, currently working with LandGuys in Illinois. The proof of his dedication to the outdoors can be seen in his commitment to his own personal land holdings in both Illinois and Tennessee which consistently yield great animals.

Video and television isn't Tony's only venue however. He has been an award winning outdoor writer for over 20 years and was the owner and editor of his home state's largest outdoor publication, Tennessee Outdoor News, for over 10 years. Tony is often contacted to be quoted as an expert on various editorial pieces by others in the outdoor writing community. He has also been awarded the highly coveted title of "Tennessee Outdoor Communicator of the Year" by the Tennessee Wildlife Federation.

Among all these other things that keep him busy, Tony is a much sought after public speaker with his topics ranging from....Top End Hunting Locations to Travel to with a Muzzleloader to our 2nd Amendment Rights. As anyone who has ever met him can attest, Tony is also the author of untold numbers of southern witticisms, and if you don't believe that, he will quickly tell you it's the truth just the same as 40lbs of dough makes a big biscuit.

Series Finale! We talk to Dan Infalt, the "Big Buck Serial Killer" from Wisconsin and a Michigan legend John Eberhart about their unique scent control tactics. We interviewed these guys separately and have combined the interviews into a 3-part series. Both hunters have had tremendous success hunting mature bucks on public land. They don't pull any punches when it comes to comparing their scent control tactics and how they differ.

Dan Infalt

Dan grew up and has lived in SE Wisconsin his whole life. He was the youngest of 11 children. Because he grew up without much money, hunting, fishing, trapping, and gathering were more of a way to survive than a hobby. Dan now works as a Prototype machinist. On the side he teaches workshops where he shares his personal scouting and hunting tactics, showing students the properties he hunts while examining some of his most successful set-ups on mature whitetail deer. Dan and his tactics have been featured in many magazines, such as Field & Stream, Deer & Deer Hunting, North American Whitetail, and more. His scouting and hunting tactic videos have helped countless hunters revolutionize the way the chase mature whitetails. He has taken well over 30 Pope and Young quality deer over the years, mostly on heavily pressured public land. He doesn’t like hunting by or supporting their strict guidelines, so you won’t find most of them in any record books.

John Eberhart

John currently has 30 bucks listed in the Commemorative Bucks of Michigan record book and they came off 19 different properties in 10 different counties with many coming from public land. He took the Michigan state record muzzleloader buck in 1981 from public land and that has been the only state record buck to come off state land. In 1997, he began bowhunting out of state, during Michigan’s gun season and to date has taken 19 P&Y class bucks on his 21 week long out of state hunts. John along with his son Chris has written 3 books on hunting pressured whitetails and he has written instructional bowhunting articles for Deer & Deer Hunting, Peterson’s Bowhunting, Bowhunting World, & many more. He has also produced instructional DVDs on his hunting and scouting techniques.
