In the final episode of “Law and H’ordeuvres” Season 1, investigation into the Notwithstanding Clause comes to a close. Sam and Jacqueline return to the podcast to chat about what they learned from Professor Weinrib’s insights and what questions still remain. Through open dialogue, this final episode asks some important questions about what barriers the public faces in interpreting their legal rights and responsibilities, and what the legal profession can do to help us all move forward together.
Episode 3 of “Law and H’ordeuvres” brings part 2 of Meg and Andrew’s interview with Professor Lorraine Weinrib. Picking up where they left off, this second half of the conversation focuses on why invoking the Notwithstanding Clause should be of concern to all those in Ontario and Quebec, both inside and outside the legal profession.
In this second episode of “Law and H’ordeuvres” Meg and Andrew interview University of Toronto Faculty of Law Professor and Constitutional Law expert Lorraine Weinrib to get her take on the past and present invocations of the Notwithstanding Clause in Canada. Raising questions from Episode 1 as well as some of their own, the focus rests on helping those outside the legal community gain a more concrete and in-depth understanding of the Override and what it could mean for Ontario’s future.
“Law and H’ordeuvres” is a Pro Bono Students Canada (PBSC) Podcast series serving up small insights into the current affairs of the Canadian legal landscape, one dish at a time. In the show’s first mini-series, first year University of Toronto Faculty of Law students Meg Cormack and Andrew Luba zero-in on the effects of declarations made by Premiers Ford and Legault earlier this fall stating their intentions to invoke the Notwithstanding Clause in Ontario and Quebec. By seeking out the pressing questions on the general public’s mind, and pressing Constitutional Law experts for answers, their goal is to increase awareness of the rights we all share through an accessible legal education. In this first episode, Meg and Andrew interview University of Toronto Engineering student Sam Stuart and OCAD alumni Jacqueline Lee about their initial reactions to the Notwithstanding Clause and to the possibility that we and our governments are normalizing it.
