He dices, he D.Js and he’s one of Ireland’s most beloved chefs and this week, he’s our special guest on The Lennon Courtney Podcast - welcome, Neven Maguire!

Neven is a regular on Irish TV and radio as well as a prolific writer having created over a dozen best-selling cookbooks. His latest masterpiece is Learn to Cook with Nevan and is aimed at the younger wannabe chefs in your life. For the more seasoned home cook, Neven’s Perfect Irish Christmas is a must have. It’s now available to buy in your local Dunnes Stores, bookshops and even your library and will help you make a no hassle and delicious Christmas dinner.

In this episode, we loved chatting to Neven about his resilience and positive attitude. He also shared a few great cooking tips to help make your festive feast a hit. Sonya also shared her tale of ending up in a kitchen with Ricky Martin’s producers and Brendan reminisces on being the best damn kitchen porter in the Next Cafe on Grafton Street. The restaurant industry’s loss was truly our gain.

This is our final episode for this series but we’ll be back early 2022 rested and full of roast potatoes.

Have a safe Christmas and New Years if you can. Special mention goes to all the shift workers out there who will keep working the festive period. We appreciate you.

Until next year folks, bye for now!

Sonya and Brendan.

Welcome back to The Lennon Courtney Podcast where we continue to celebrate the doyenne.

Last week we went to Hollywood and this week we’re heading to Iceland as we chat to Tatjana Latinović. Tatjana is President of the Icelandic Women‘s Rights Association which advocates for gender equality there. In holding the position, Tatjana is the first immigrant to be elected chair of IWRA since it was founded in 1907. In this episode, we talked about immigration, childcare provision and how Iceland dealt with the financial crisis of 2008 -2011. It's one very educational conversation.

We hope you enjoy this week's chat and if you do, please leave us a positive review here and five stars. It really helps and takes seconds. If you're listening on the iPhone podcast app, just scroll down The Lennon Courtney Podcast page and tap away.

Until next Thursday!

This week on The Lennon Courtney Podcast we have a guest that is pure deadly.

Angeline Ball first came to the worlds attention in 1991 when she starred in The Commitments as Imelda Quirke. She has worked steadily since then and is currently starring in the Irish comedy Deadly Cuts which is in cinemas right now. But that's not all - she's got the small screen covered too this autumn/winter. In the new six part RTE's crime drama Hidden Assets, Angeline plays Emer Barry a detective in the Criminal Assets Bureau. Her character travels between Belgium, Antwerp and eh, Clare to pursue a criminal gang. It's a story about 'family, power and the corrosive effects of boundless greed'. Sonya called it 'Celtic-Noir' which could catch on - don't forget, you heard it here first!

In this episode, Angeline shares the pearls of wisdom she has passed on to her two children. She also talks about ageing, fulfilling her long held ambition of releasing her own music plus her work experience in The Glamour Pitt on Meath Street. All we'll say is that we know where the Lennon Courtney Christmas party is taking place this year...

As always, thank you so much for listening. Help us out by leaving a positive review here plus five gold stars. You can also do it very easily on your phone in the iTunes podcast app. Scroll down the Lennon Courtney podcast page and add a review there. It helps us get pushed up the charts by the all-seeing algorithm and more people can hear us.

Until next Thursday!

Long time no see strangers!

We took a little break to restore and revive ourselves and now The Lennon Courtney Podcast is back for series 7.

This series the theme is Pearls of Wisdom and over the next few weeks, we'll be chatting to doyennes - prominent women in their fields, to share with us their wisdom and experience around life, finances, work and more.

To get proceedings underway, we decided to make a splash with our first guest. Paralympic gold medal winner Ellen Keane . Ellen hails from Clontarf in Dublin and was born without part of her left arm below her elbow. She was Ireland’s youngest ever athlete when she swam in the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games at just 13 years old, coming 6th in the 100m breaststroke. In 2018 at the World European Para-Swim Championships, she won a bronze and a season’s best performance which saw her named on the RTÉ Sport Awards 2019 Sportsperson of the Year alongside team mate Nicole Turner. Then, in 2020 she won gold in the 100m breaststroke in the Tokyo Paralympics and a nation cheered.

Ellen talks to us in this episode about self-acceptance, how she trained without a pool at the height of the pandemic in 2020 and Brendan shared his dream of becoming a synchronised swimmer - we cover a lot ; )

Thank you so much for listening and please leave a positive review here plus five gold stars. You can also do it very easily on your phone in the iTunes podcast app. Scroll down the Lennon Courtney podcast page and add a review there. It helps us get pushed up the charts by the all-seeing algorithm and more people can hear us.

Until next Thursday!

Sonya and Brendan.

WATCH In 2017 Ellen Keane gave a Ted X talk called ‘My Lucky Fin’. In her talk she tells the story of how she changed the way she looked at her disability and how that in turn changed her entire life. Watch here.

With Eileen Flynn

Welcome to Lennon Courtney Left Alone, with Guests.

For our final episode in this series, we are delighted to be joined by a living history maker, Senator Eileen Flynn. Senator Flynn is an Independent politician who has served as a Senator since June 2020, after being nominated by the Taoiseach Micheal Martin. She is the first member of the Travelling Community to serve in the Oireachtas.

But Eileen has always been a groundbreaker. When she was in secondary school, both she and her twin became the first members of the Labre Park community in Ballyfermot to reach third level education in 2008. Flynn then went on to study at Trinity College Dublin before attending Ballyfermot College of Further Education and later earning a degree at Maynooth University with a BA. Since then, she has worked in community development and activism on behalf of Irish Travellers. She has also campaigned on issues such as housing, marriage equality, abortion rights and anti-racism.

Before you hit play, we’d really appreciate it if you took a minute to leave us a short positive review and five stars at this link. We know you hear it all the time but that’s because it really helps the podcast grow. We can’t do it without you.

We’re taking a little break for a few weeks but we’ll return before you miss us too much for season 7.

Thank you so much for listening.

Welcome to series 3 of Lennon Courtney Left Alone, a podcast about conversations we have when we’re left alone.

This week it’s The Sleep Issue.

Research carried out in 2018 revealed that almost 80% of Irish people are sleep deprived. We are a nation sleepwalking through life. Not getting enough sleep means we’re not getting the most out ourselves and our days but more importantly, it is incredibly damaging to our health.

While we have you bright eyed and bushy tailed, we would really appreciate it if you left us a 5 star review and comment on iTunes or wherever you listen. We left a link in our show notes to make it easy for you.

Before we get started though, as always, we would really love it if you left us a 5 star review and comment on iTunes or wherever you listen. All you have to do is click here and it will bring you straight to our page. Our podcast is always free to listen to so consider leaving five stars like a digital tip to us.

Until next Thursday, continue to stay safe!

This week it’s The Mother Issue.

The child/mother dynamic can be a tricky one to navigate sometimes but if you’re lucky, your mother will be your biggest supporter and source of great comfort throughout your life.

We talk about the trap some mothers fall into of doing it all and that emotional labour needs to be evenly carried by both parents. Brendan talks about his beloved mam and how well they get on but may think twice about working together in the future. Sonya shares her experience of motherhood and talks about how she is the product of brilliant parenting from her firebrand mum. We also talk about tattoos and ear piercing for some reason.

THE FOOD ISSUE

Welcome to Lennon Courtney Left Alone, a podcast about conversations we have when we’re left alone.

This week it’s The Food Issue.

This week the Left Aloners talk about our relationship with food growing up and how it has matured and developed over the years. Sonya's air-hostess mother flew around the world with her job which influenced her approach to cooking. She wasn't afraid of making bold culinary choices. Brendan on the other hand grew up not really enjoying food and viewed it as a means to an end. Oh how times have changed. Under the tutelage of one Ms. Sonya Lennon and the school of life, Brendan has come to enjoy cooking and even looks forward to planning his meals. Gold star Mr. Courtney.

If you have any questions for us, leave them in your iTunes review and we'll answer them as best we can. It takes seconds and really helps the podcast grow.

Welcome to The Loneliness Issue.

A 2015 study stated that ‘a lack of social connection heightens health risks as much as smoking 15 cigarettes a day or having alcohol use disorder’. The same study also found that loneliness and social isolation ‘are twice as harmful to physical and mental health as obesity’.

With the Covid 19 lockdown, many people have had no choice but to either severely limit their daily interactions because of cocooning measures or spend the past few months living alone for the benefit of the wider community. And while lockdown may have suited the introverts amongst us, how have the extroverts faired?

Outside of this emergency, what does it mean to be lonely? Do we need to sit with our loneliness more to discover what’s behind it? Are we sometimes simply bored?

So many questions and we ask all of the above in this week’s episode.

But of course, you are never alone with Sonya and Brendan in your ears. We’re always here for you...in a socially distanced way of course.

Continue to stay safe.

Welcome to series 2 of Lennon Courtney Left Alone. We are so thrilled that you loved the first series so here we are again! For our first week back, we decided to kick things off with The Home Issue.

There’s no place like it but who would have thought just a few months ago we’d be spending so much time there. Our work, personal and social lives all now centre on the place we call home. If you’re lucky, you get to spend lockdown in a safe space but unfortunately, not everyone has this privilege.

In this episode, we talk about the psychology of home, what it means to us and ask, after all this ends, will we ever return to the ‘real world’ in the same way?

We started this first series of Lennon Courtney Left Alone just as lockdown kicked in and as we leave you (until the 28th May) lockdown is still in effect.

We have loved sharing the conversations we usually have when we’re left alone over the last few weeks but now, it’s time for us to take a little restorative break. We'll be holiday-ing at home of course; who knows when holiday’s abroad will become a reality again for all of us.

In this episode we want to talk about stepping out of our routine and all that can bring. What does travel give us? How do we relax and where do we want to go next?

Don't forget, series 2 kicks off on the 28th May so you won’t be without us for too long. Thanks so much for listening up until now and for all of the lovely reviews and comments on iTunes. It is so nice knowing you're enjoying Lennon Courtney Left Alone and it's given us a pep in our step for the second series.

This week, it’s The Money Episode of Lennon Courtney Left Alone.

We know that now, more than ever, we are all concerned about what the future holds. All of us want to make sure we can secure our homes, be they rental or mortgaged and maintain our incomes as we sail further into these unchartered waters. We had no idea what lay ahead for us when we sat down to chat just a few weeks ago. This health emergency has shown us that our health really is our wealth but at the same time, the uncertainty of employment and our physical and mental well-being are all interconnected.

Know that we want the best for our listeners and are keeping you all in our thoughts. To get through this frightening time, we have to stick together.

With that said, this week we talk about valuing your time, the equal pay vs gender pay gap, female representation in leadership and what money means to us.

We mentioned Caroline Criado Perez’s book in this episode which is available in your local library (whenever they reopen) or buy it here.

This week on Lennon Courtney Left Alone, it’s The Age Episode.

Now, more than ever, we understand what a privilege it is to get older, so for this episode, we wanted to look at ageing. We talked about what we thought it would look like when we were younger and how we find it now. We also look at the factors that contribute to living a healthy and engaged life, about the Japanese concept of Ikigai and a new stage of life called gerontolescence. At Lennon Courtney Left Alone, we like to leave no conversational stone unturned!

Once again, with this episode, we feel it is important to point out that our chats represent our own personal thoughts and views on getting older. We have not graduated from Age Expert University so keep that in mind as you listen. It is also worth keeping in mind, it was recorded before the Covid 19 pandemic.

With all that said, we hope you enjoy listening wherever you get your podcasts.

See you again next Thursday for a brand new episode.

Sonya and Brendan.

Welcome to Lennon Courtney Left Alone, a podcast of conversations we have when we’re left alone.

For our first episode, we wanted to look at the topic Worry and Anxiety. Before you listen to our dulcet tones, we want to make very clear that neither of us are experts on the subject of mental health. In this episode we are sharing our own personal experiences. If you are struggling with any aspect of your mental health please speak to an expert such as your GP or present to your local Accident and Emergency Department.

Do not suffer in silence.

Sonya Lennon and Brendan Courtney are two of Ireland’s most recognisable faces. First appearing together on RTE’s fashion magazine show, Off The Rails in 2008, they were an instant hit. Since then the two have hosted sold out live events around the country, written two books and started their fashion label Lennon Courtney. Launching a podcast was the natural next step, I mean, who are you these days without one?

Inspired by long car journeys together around the country and trips across the globe, Lennon Courtney Left Alone is a podcast of conversations they have when they’re left alone. Nothing is off the table. Each week they’ll take on topics like Age, Purpose, Money, Worry and Anxiety, Beauty and, well, anything that tickles and provokes them. Episodes are infused with their characteristic humour, joy and honesty that audiences have grown to love for more than ten years.
