Join us as we discuss the inseparability of the "Energy Winds" and the mind. We will cover foundational information on the Subtle Body, techniques to balance it, and how the health of the Subtle Body directly affects our meditation practice.
We discuss the subtleties of practice techniques, including Shamatha (concentration), Vipassana (insight) (both Theravada and Tibetan), and Heart practices (both Theravada and Tibetan).
Sometimes the hardest thing about the practice is doing the practice! For me, this has continued to evolve. We explore tips and techniques for building a routine that can last through the busy and difficult times in life.
In this talk we look at the very powerful "4 Thoughts" as we look to find a deep, sustainable motivation for our practice.
The Two Wings: Love and Wisdom We need both of these to fly the spiritual bird toward the sun of our true nature. They each delicately balance one another. Without one or the other we are lost and can easily get off course.
There are many situations where the feeling of loss can arise in our life. The good news is that the Dharma not only prepares us for loss but shows us how we can use it as a tool for sustained happiness and growth.
How can we bring resiliency to our practice and thus sustain mental, emotional, and spiritual stability in our daily life? Lets explore together.
It is hard to find a teaching that is more freeing than impermanence. How to get on board with accepting impermanence is the challenge. In this talk, we speak of ways to sit with, befriend, and commune with this great all-pervading truth.
This mind training (lo-jong) root text was composed by Kadampa Geshe Langri Tangpa (1054–1123). It is a timeless and accessible teaching on incorporating wisdom and compassion in daily life. [Part 2]
This mind training (lo-jong) root text was composed by Kadampa Geshe Langri Tangpa (1054–1123. It is a timeless and accessible teaching on incorporating wisdom and compassion in daily life.
In this talk we chat about methods and techniques to master the elusive art of concentration.
How do we strive and yet be at ease in our practice and our life? Let's explore together!
Does devotion have a place in your practice? Lets explore the benefits of this core spiritual attribute together!
"True love can be either devotion to enlightened beings or compassion for unenlightened beings.
In the moment when you totally give up any selfish attachment and the mind is filled only with devotion or compassion, there is no concept that can make the realization of emptiness stray into some sidetrack. That's the ultimate safeguard- to experience the realization of emptiness suffused with compassion.
That's why the Sutra system of Buddhism says that the true path of enlightenment is the unity of compassion and insight into emptiness."
~ Tulku Urgen Rinpoche
"The foundational practices of ngöndro exist as a method for realizing the nature of reality which is a beginningless enlightened state." -Dudjom Rinpoche
Relationships offer us innumerable opportunities for growth and insight. They are tricky, though, and can easily foster fear and attachment.
Join us as we shine the light of skillful means on this important subject.
"What is the meaning of life?" A Buddhist may say this is the wrong question altogether. A question that may lead to more happiness and less suffering, is simply: "What is life?"
Let's explore this life together, including the habits that keep us imprisoned and the wisdom that frees.
In this talk, we dive into the Metta Sutta in detail. We go over its origins, the depths of its meaning and how to apply it in everyday life.
The time is always now, and now is a perfect time to think deeply--move deeply into the depths of practice and intention. In the depths is where we nurture the immortal, uproot wisdom and flame the passion of truth.
As is the practice, we want to look at what is arising, no matter how uncomfortable that may be. Tomorrow lets hold this election together, in the arms of the Sangha, to see where the peace may be hiding amid the chaos. [11/6/2016]
In reality our conduct can be the fastest way to happiness. As Lama Zopa says, "Put enlightenment second, first just be kind to self and others."
Sadhana is a term used to describe a specific meditation practice. In Buddhism there are many Sadhanas (probably hundreds). These are like little daily practice manuals, each one with a unique focus. In this talk, we go over what elements we can bring to our practice in order to customize and invigorate our spiritual life.
Sometimes this "spiritual path" thing can get confusing. Of course it does not need to be. Let's break it down to the basics so we can stay the course with a renewed sense of confident clarity.
We're busy, but we know that the time for practice is now. Can we have the passion and authentic practice of a Himalayan Cave Yogi in this urban life we lead? Why not?
In this talk we explore our innate perfection. As we walk our path, we do so with an open vulnerability, and yet it is our trust in the unwavering solidity of our authentic self that keeps us grounded.
In this talk we discuss how to expand our circle of compassion. The great Indian Saint Tilopa once said that Samsara is simply to see fault in others. We will go deeper into this idea and how we can apply it in our everyday lives.
A Bodhisattva is a being bound by a vow to free themselves and all beings and they will not rest until this is done. It starts with freeing ourselves and the 6 perfections are what is to be cultivated. It is a path of sincere dedication yet it is one of brilliance, joy, and eventually an unshakable contentment.
What is great about the 6 Perfections is that the are accessible, practical, and quick to add benefits to our lives. It is not to say that it will be easy! But it will be worth it!
Paramita is a Sanskrit term and means “perfection.” It is translated into Tibetan as pha-rol-tu-phyin-pa, which literally means “gone to the other shore.”
The "other shore" in the context of the Buddhadharma means transcendence of mental fixations concerning subject, objects, and actions.
These are the six qualities that unfold in the heart-mind of an aspriing Bodhisattva:
Generosity Ethical Discipline Patience Joyous Effort Meditative Stabilization Wisdom
Whether it be inner difficulty or dealing with the world at large, relying on our practice during these times can be challenging. In this talk we go over ways to use our practice as support to calm the storm.
In this talk, we explore the truly inspired life of the great Buddhist saint Milarepa, who overcame all odds to find enlightenment.
The shortcut to enlightenment may not be what we think. Tracing back the essence of the profound teachings, we may find that simple ethics can prove to be the quickest way to liberation.
Connection is nourishing and we can find it in many different ways. We explore ways to anchor into a deep seated feeling of connection in our lives and practice.
One of the greatest teachers of our time, Thich Nhat Hanh, is a master of so much, but may be most known for is practical tools that help us in everyday life. I share some of my favorites from this most precious teacher.
In this talk we focus on "I AM" --not as as intellectual tool of analysis but as an actual technique to move us into the experiential realization of ourselves as a center point within the collective whole. It is here that we will find not an empty negation, but an inspired unity and empowerment.
In this talk, we discuss the inexpressible value of spiritual friendships and community.
Our path should lead us into greater openness for all that life has to offer, it is not simply a filtration system, just allowing the "good" and "pleasant" in.
How can we give compassion to others if we are not able to be with their realities?
All of life is learning, all is precious.
bo·dhi·satt·va noun A person who is able to reach nirvana but delays doing so out of compassion in order to save suffering beings.
In celebration of the Bodhisattva His Holiness The Dalai Lama's 80th Birthday, we discuss the incredibly beautiful 37 verses (short poems) in this most inspired text. The Tibetan Buddhist text acts as a short, clear, and concise instruction manual on how to become the embodiment of enlightened love.
The ultimate goal- to bear witness to mind's essential nature free of fabrication. What is in the way of this perception? Let's explore!
"..to timeless Buddhahood, basic total presence, to unchanging spontaneity, the spacious vajra-heart, to the nature of mind - natural perfection, constantly, simply being, we bow down.” ― Longchenpa
It’s within all of us--a part that is not totally content, not fully loving and accepting of who we are. How can we move into a state of self-acceptance?
Seeking mind or non-seeking mind? Do we strive, or just be? As a spiritual aspirant how do we put into practice the benefits of both? Relative Reality and Ultimate Reality both have merit. We will explore and look to bring this topic into clear focus so that it can inspire our practice instead of confuse it.
We cannot give what we do not have. In this talk, we discuss ways in which we can take care of ourselves so we can sustain compassion for others.
Let’s explore the foundations of a solid practice, specific techniques and resource tools to relieve the stress and anxiety of recent events.
What is the Buddhist view on The Law of Attraction?
We look at it from a variety of angles to see where Buddhism may be similar and where it may differ from traditional views on the subject. We will also discuss briefly some of the pioneers of LOA in the West dating back to the '40s, the high magic of India, and Native American thoughts to get a broader take on the complex subject.
In this talk we look at the resurrection of Christ and how this can apply to our own spiritual development. We can call this a Re-Awakening. Christ showed us literally and symbolically that there is a rebirth on the other side of the negation of what is unwholesome.
“Meditate. Live purely. Be quiet. Do your work with mastery. Like the moon, come out from behind the clouds! Shine.” -Buddha
It is very important that we integrate our practice into all walks of life. In this talk we practice mindful activities that will help us open and grow.
We will be exploring when to know what is best: to push or to surrender. Sometimes it's hard to tell, but there might just be a few things we can do to point us down the right road.
Let’s explore together what it means to know truth, and how it can make a meaningful difference in everyday life.
Let's look at the pithy instructions for meditation in the Tibetan tradition. In this talk we look at the mind in movement, at rest, in relation to itself and outer / inner phenomena.
“All sentient beings are Buddhas, But they are covered by temporary obscurations.” – Hevajra Tantra
In this talk we investigate the power of belief; of how we view our worthiness, and how that can affect our spiritual path, and ultimately whether or not we awaken.
