The college football news cycle has been in overdrive this past week with conferences making last minute decisions on whether they can play this fall. In this episode, Pete and Robbie attempt to unpack everything that's gone on before discussing some recent comments from VT head coach Justin Fuente. The guys also touch on the progress in Hokies' recruiting and the departure of stud CB Caleb Farley. Enjoy!
After weeks of uncertainty, the ACC finally released the new 10-game schedules for the conference. With Notre Dame added for 2020, the road to Charlotte will be a bit tougher for this year's contenders. VT avoids the Irish, but does draw no. 1 Clemson at home. The UVA game has also been moved up to week 2. Lots to unpack in our first episode of the summer, enjoy!
State restrictions are slowly lifting, the 2020 football season prospects are improving, and Pete and Robbie are getting excited! After a tough few weeks, the good news is coming in once again. The guys update you on all the recruiting drama before discussing the release of Athlon's Top 25 for 2020.
Local lockdown orders have the guys bummin', but there's still plenty of VT topics to talk about. Despite the cancellation of spring sports, football and basketball commitments keep coming in for the Hokies. Pete and Robbie update you on everything that's been going on before getting into the spring depth chart battles that could have been.
In their first episode of 2020, the guys cover a lot of ground. Topics include the basketball team's recent struggles, Fuente's flirtation with Baylor, the filling out of the coaching staff, roster attrition, recruiting, the 2020 football schedule, and, last but not least, the Belk Bowl. Sorry for the wait, enjoy!
Even though the regular season is behind us, the VT football program is still buzzing with activity. In addition to some key coaching hires over the past two weeks, the early signing period for the 2020 recruiting class started on Wednesday. Pete and Robbie discuss the signees, as well as what the national ranking of the class means for the program and how it links into the coaching staff. At the end of the episode, the guys go full Belk Bowl (you never go full Belk Bowl), previewing what the matchup with Kentucky might look like. This is the last episode of Two Deep for 2019. Hope you all enjoyed the year as much as we did.
That sound you hear is the Hokies crashing back down to earth. After 15 years of dominance, Tech finally lost the Commonwealth Cup to UVA. Pete and Robbie recap what went wrong in the game, but try to focus on the positive steps the team took this season. The guys then turn the page to bowl projections and the search for VT's new defensive coordinator. This is a pivotal moment in the program; hopefully, Whit and Fuente bring someone in that can carry on Bud's Lunch Pail Defense legacy.
Bud Foster does it again! Another shutout, this time in his last home game. What a performance by the defense, holding Pat Narduzzi's undisciplined squad to less than 200 yards and an embarrassing zero on the scoreboard. Pete and Robbie recap every detail before shifting their focus to Hate Week. The battle for the Coastal division once again comes down to the Commonwealth Cup and the guys are psyched. An opportunity to face Clemson in the ACC Championship Game, as well as an Orange Bowl birth, is on the line. Not to mention #TheStreak. Here's hoping the Hokies make it 16 straight over UVA!
SHUTOUT! The Hokies destroyed the yellow jackets down in Atlanta this past Saturday, 45-0, continuing their amazing 2019 turnaround. Pete and Robbie recap the stellar offensive and defensive performances; however, the celebration can't last too long with Pitt up next. The Panthers will bring a scary pass rush to Blacksburg this weekend in what should be a low scoring affair. With just two games left, VT still controls its own fate in the Coastal. Beat Pitt, and the UVA game is for all the marbles. Let's hope they take care of business.
Before the Hokies took GT to the woodshed, Pete got to spend some time talking to former VT football players Eric Gallo and Joshua Oglesby. From the recruiting process, to some of their favorite moments on the field, Eric and Josh spoke openly and honestly about their time at Virginia Tech. It was really cool to get their perspective on the program. Huge thank you to two of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. Enjoy!
Bud Foster was the story this past weekend in Blacksburg, and the lunch pail defense certainly did right by him in a 36-17 win over Wake Forest. Pete and Robbie recap how the Hokies stifled Wake's fast-paced attack, and finally praise Coach Corn for his effective play-calling. Up next is a trip to Atlanta with bowl eligibility on the line for VT. Can Fuente's young team handle their new found success and take care of business in the Techmo Bowl? We'll find out on Saturday.
That was a punch in the gut. The VT upset was a long shot when the game started, but it seemed like the Hokies were going to pull it off until the final 30 seconds. Despite the painful ending, it was an extremely valiant effort by Fuente's undermanned squad. Let's hope some of that fight spills over into the Wake Forest matchup. The Demon Deacons are 7-1 and they currently have hopes for a New Year's 6 birth. Tech can play spoiler, move one step closer to bowl eligibility, and get its first win over a top 25 opponent in Lane since 2009. Plenty to play for. With four conference games left in the 2019 season, let's get this final stretch started off right. Go Hokies!
The honeymoon is over. For Pete, and for the team. Recharged and refreshed after the thrilling UNC victory, VT heads to South Bend this weekend hoping for an upset. The guys catch you up on where the Hokies stand through their first seven games before diving deep on the Irish. A win would change the way we perceive this team drastically. Let’s hope the boys can pull it off!
A VT game to remember for sure. The Hokies beat UNC in the first 6OT game since the new rules have been implemented and the longest game in ACC history. If you didn't watch it, go back, and make sure your stomach is empty. A great performance by this team, and ahead of a big bye week before ND. Hope you enjoy it and Stick It In!
So that week is behind us. VT found some improvement on offense, and perhaps rehashed some of the same struggles on defense. That said, we are 4-2 heading into ACC games, with a bit more daunting road ahead than maybe we expected. Pete is enjoying time away, so Robbie brought on a fan to co-host. Big thanks to Devon, and let's get a big home win this week. Go Hokies!
That's how you respond. The Hokies bounced back in a big way with a much needed victory over Miami. Robbie and Pete recap all the action, and discuss the immediate impact of new starting QB Hendon Hooker. The guys stress the importance of managing expectations going forward, but are still very excited about the young quarterback's potential. Rhode Island is up next, and while VT should take of of business, no game is a walk in the park for this current batch of Hokies. Stick around for a bit of UNC talk and ATS picks at the end. Man, does beating Miami feel good! Enjoy it.
How low can you go? The Hokies found new levels of ineptitude in a demoralizing 45-10 loss to Duke. Robbie and Pete's depression turns to exasperation in this one, as they attempt to wrap their heads around the current state of the VT football program. Fuente's seat has never been hotter, and the guys offer their opinions on what Whit's course of action should be. The Miami preview takes a backseat in this episode, but it's in there if you stick it out past the hour mark. The once promising season outlook is well in the rearview mirror; the rest of 2019 is about damage control.
Tech was off this past weekend, but the banged-up Hokies were hard at work preparing for Duke's tricky offense. The Cutcliffe/Foster chess-match is always fascinating, but how Fuente plans to exploit a veteran defense with few holes is just as important. With a rowdy Lane Stadium behind them, can VT finally get back to mistake-free football? Or will the Blue Devils put a pitchfork in our season? Pete and Robbie are cautiously optimistic.
A win is a win. After another sloppy game, the Hokies head into the bye week at 2-1. Robbie and Pete give their thoughts on the addition of former head coach Jerry Kill before recapping what they saw against Furman. The bye comes at a good time, as the team certainly needs to get some things figured out before the Coastal race really gets going. Enjoy the week off, it could be a bumpy rest of the season.
Consider our expectations tempered. While VT did avenge last year's loss, the win over ODU won't be a game many remember. The guys break down what they saw on Saturday before moving on to Furman, an FCS opponent that has them spooked. Extended ATS picks at the end. Go Hokies!
Give it away, give it away, give it away, wow. The offense let us down and the defense wasn't ready in a disappointing loss to Boston College. Addazio did VT dirty as his physical team put a hurtin' on the Hokies. Robbie and Pete recap the game before diving into commentary on the team's identity. There was plenty to be angry about, but the fire shown by the defense in the second half was certainly a pleasant surprise. This young Tech squad can still make some noise this year, but first, they must exorcise their demons from the 2018 ODU game. Give 'em hell, Hokies!
IT'S GAME WEEK! Finally, the season has arrived and the guys couldn't be more excited. After a packed new and notes segment, Robbie and Pete tell you what to look for in the opener against BC. If you can make it to the end, you'll hear picks ATS for this weekend's middling slate of games. Here's hoping for 1-0, GO HOKIES!
In this 5th annual edition of Two Deep's Season Preview, Robbie and Pete get you pumped for the 2019 campaign. Preseason rankings, position groups, offensive and defensive expectations, record predictions - it's all here. Hope you're ready for a our super senior year of the podcast, should be the best yet!
In this episode, the guys react to Sports Illustrated's shocking piece detailing the struggles of last season. Much like the team, Pete and Robbie are ready to turn the page heading into the opener vs. Boston College.
It's the end of an era. In this episode, Pete and Robbie react to the surprising announcement that Bud Foster will retire after the 2019 season. No one, other than Frank Beamer, has meant more to the Virginia Tech football program. After the guys give their thoughts on Bud's legacy, they get into what's been going on during the first week of Fall camp. There's plenty to be excited about heading into the season; let's hope the team sends Bud out the right way this year.
The guys are back! After a long hiatus, Robbie and Pete are ready to talk some Virginia Tech football. This episode covers spring practice storylines, recruiting, preseason magazine rankings, thoughts on the 2019 schedule, and some key position battles leading into fall camp. Hopefully, it's enough to satisfy our patient listeners. Enjoy, Hokies!
In this episode, the guys recap the heartbreaking Duke loss and discuss who might take over for Buzz Williams. It was a rollercoaster of a season that made history in a number of ways. Hokienation won't soon forget what Buzz and the seniors did for this program.
Historic. That's really the only word that can do it justice. The Hokies are headed to the Sweet 16 for the first time since the tournament expanded and Robbie and Pete are psyched about it. After recapping the St. Louis and Liberty games, the guys break down the spotlight matchup vs. Duke. The road to the Final Four goes through DC, and with thousands of Tech fans gobbling up tickets, there might be just enough support for Buzz and the boys to pull off the impossible.
The Hokies are going dancing, again! For the third straight season, coach Buzz Williams has Virginia Tech in the NCAA Tournament. In this episode, Robbie and Pete take an in-depth look at Tech's seeding and break down the opening round matchup vs. St. Louis. The path to the sweet 16 is more favorable than it's ever been. Let's hope VT can get there this time.
This is a packed episode. Starting with basketball, the guys discuss life without Justin Robinson, break down the remaining schedule, and lay out Tech's tournament seed possibilities. When National Signing Day was all said and done, the Hokies had a nice haul; Robbie and Pete explain why they're excited about the future of the offensive and defensive lines. Finally, the S&P+ projections for 2019 are out. With VT checking in at no. 30, the pressure is on Fuente to get this team to nine or more wins.
The rash of recent transfer announcements has Tech football fans spooked. Like many others, Robbie and Pete have a lot of questions. What's going on inside the program? Is there some underlying issue with the coaching staff? Are these transfers really that big of a deal? Better than asking each other, the guys turned to Andy Bitter of The Athletic in search of answers. Towards the end of the episode, Buzzketball is praised for their historic performance against Syracuse, and the upcoming slate is discussed.
It's finally over. A grueling season for Hokie fans, complete some with some high highs (FSU, UVA) and some very low lows (GT, Pitt), mercifully, has come to an end. In this episode, Robbie and Pete, no worse for the wear, discuss all the latest news from in and around the program before moving on to some much deserved basketball coverage. To say that the guys are excited about next week's matchup vs. UVA would be an massive understatement. And if you thought you were going to get out of this one without reliving the soggy Military Bowl loss to Cincinnati, you were mistaken. Thank you to everyone who listened all season!
Signed, sealed, and soon to be delivered. On the first night of the early signing period, Matej Sis, writer and insider for 247Sports and VT Scoop, joined the guys to break down the Hokies' 2019 recruiting class. Despite the smaller size of this year's class, the coaching staff did a good job of addressing needs while also bringing in some top talent. In the second half of this episode, Robbie and Pete make sure to give you a full Military Bowl preview. Let's hope Tech can pull off the win and preserve the streak of winning seasons.
After struggling most of the season, Virginia Tech earned a Bowl bid with their convincing win over Marshall. The guys recap the offensive highlights, while touching on the less than impressive second half. The Hokies will now play Cincinnati in the Military Bowl, a familiar matchup as Tech beat the Bearcats in Annapolis just four years ago. 26 straight Bowl appearances, simply amazing; Robbie and Pete are so happy this tumultuous season had happy ending.
15 IN A ROW! Yes, that's right, VT beat UVA for the 15th straight year in an overtime thriller. Robbie and Pete recap the wild affair and revel in the much-needed victory. With the win, Marshall is up next and the Bowl streak is on the line. Will the Hokies show the same fight we just saw against Hoos? They'll need another monster effort to beat this tough defensive squad. For what it's worth, the guys think they have it in them. Let's go, Hokies!
IT'S HATE WEEK! The guys recap the tough loss to Miami, but, more importantly, talk about the matchup with rival Virginia. A win keeps the streak alive and would mean one more game; a loss would put an end to a brutal season. Pete and Robbie have mentally prepared themselves for the worst, but are hoping for a big surprise on Black Friday. Happy Thanksgiving, listeners!
How low can you go? The Hokies found new levels of ineptitude in a demoralizing 52-22 loss to Pitt. Robbie and Pete's depression turns to exasperation in this one, as they attempt to recap what the hell happened. The guys then transition to acceptance, expressing that beating anyone right now, let alone a team with Miami's defense, is an extremely tall task. The Bowl streak is just about out of reach; does VT have anything left in the tank? We'll find out.
O... no. The offense disappeared in a disappointing loss to Boston College. Addazio did Robbie dirty as his veteran team put a hurtin' on the Hokies in the second half. The guys recap the game before diving into the commentary on play-calling. There was plenty to be angry about, but the fire shown by the defense was certainly a pleasant surprise; a similar effort will be necessary to slow down Pitt's power running game. The Coastal is still out there for the taking, can VT go on a run here and find themselves in Charlotte? It starts with beating Pitt.
Techmo Bowl blowout. Georgia Tech ran roughshod over the Hokies, putting up video game numbers in a game that was difficult to watch. Robbie and Pete begrudgingly recap the defensive disaster, attempting to find a reason for why it went so wrong. The road ahead isn't getting any easier either; Steve Addazio is bringing his best BC team in years to Blacksburg this weekend. If we don't see something from Bud Foster's group on Saturday, the Hokies' bowl streak could be in serious jeopardy in 2018. Buckle up, this season may have a bumpy finish.
Rest, no relaxation. The Hokies were off this past weekend, but Bud Foster and the young defense were hard at work preparing for Georgia Tech's triple option offense. The CPJ/Foster chess-match is always fascinating, but how Fuente plans to exploit a GT defense with a lot of its own holes is just important. With a perfect record in the ACC on the line, and a rowdy Lane Stadium behind them, can VT finally get over the Techmo Bowl hump? Or will the Yellow Jackets win for the third year in a row? Pete and Robbie are cautiously optimistic.
A win is a win. After a sloppy game, and a crazy finish, the Hokies head into the bye week at 4-2 and 3-0 in the ACC. Pete and Robbie recap just how lucky VT was to get the W against UNC, and enjoy some pumpkin beers in the process. The bye comes at a good time, as this team certainly needs to get some things figured out before the Coastal race really gets going. Enjoy the week off, it should be a wild second half of the season.
That one hurt. Unfortunately, the Hokies have now contributed to the "Notre Dame is going to the playoff" narrative. Don V, of the Don V Fridays podcast, helps the guys recap the dismal showing against the Irish before previewing UNC. The levity brought by Don in this episode was certainly welcome after a tough week on the field. With that said, VT still has plenty to play for; let's hope the team comes out angry and pulls off the win down in Chapel Hill.
That's how you respond. The Hokies bounced back in a big way with a definitive victory over Duke. Robbie and Pete recap the all the action from Durham before getting you ready for the gigantic contest vs. Notre Dame. Lane will certainly be jumping as Tech welcomes the no. 6, undefeated Fighting Irish to Blacksburg. There's a lot on the line for the Domers; their manageable path to the playoff has been at the forefront of the national conversation since their win over Stanford. However, the refocused Hokies will have something to say about that. The level of play should be high on Saturday night; grab a beer and get your popcorn ready, this is going to be a good one.
That sound you hear is the Hokies crashing back down to earth. After an impressive start to the season, Tech laid an historic egg, losing to Old Dominion 35-49. Pete and Robbie recap what went wrong and debate where the loss ranks among some of the Hokies' worst. Once the ODU game is put to bed, the guys turn the page to Duke. Will Fuente and the boys be able to pick up the pieces and get a win down in Durham? It won't be an easy task, but the bounce back spot has treated the Hokies well over the years. Here's hoping VT can right the ship.
VT football, how we've missed you. After an unexpected bye week, the Hokies should be recharged heading into their game against Old Dominion. Pete and Robbie recap all the college football action from last weekend before previewing the historic trip to Norfolk. The stadium will be small, but the crowd should be rowdy. Don't be surprised if ODU hangs for a quarter or two, but, hopefully, Tech will flex its muscles as the game progresses. Duke and ND loom, but taking care of business should be the focus on Saturday. As always, ATS picks at the end. Let's go, Hokies!
Well that was fun. Virginia Tech took William & Mary behind the woodshed on Saturday. Robbie and Pete recap the offensive explosion and praise a great game overall despite some mistakes on D. Unfortunately, next week's matchup vs. ECU has been canceled due to hurricane Florence. The guys try to fill the hole in their hearts with some extra picks against the spread. Everyone, please, stay safe and dry this weekend.
1-0! The Hokies went into Tallahassee and shocked the college football world on Monday night. The offense started off hot, the defense dominated throughout, and our special teams paid tribute to Frank Beamer with a game-changing play. It was quite a night. Robbie and Pete recap all the action, and discuss Bud Foster's legendary impact on our program. Before moving on to William & Mary, the guys stress the importance managing expectations over the next month. Stick around for ATS picks at the end. Man, does beating Florida State feel good! Enjoy it, Hokies.
Andy Bitter from The Athletic joins the guys to help preview the opener against Florida State. Andy's insight on media access, the running game, and our young defense provides the backdrop for a matchup full of unknowns. As you would expect, Pete and Robbie share their reasons for optimism, despite a talent discrepancy, and finish the pod with their first picks segment of the year. College football season is finally here. Let's go, Hokies!
In this 4th annual edition of Two Deep's Season Preview, Robbie and Pete get you pumped for the 2018 campaign. The G.O.A.T. in Arlington, VA welcomed your two favorite Hokies with open arms, allowing the properly lubricated duo to expound on every topic with great enthusiasm. Preseason rankings, returning production, position groups, record predictions - it's all here. Hope you're ready for a wild senior year of the podcast, should be the best yet!
Joe Lanza from thekeyplay.com joins Pete and Robbie to discuss all things VT. Topics include Khadim Sy, DT depth, the coaches poll, the TKP interview with Fuente, #HilGAINZ, and the guys' Win Confidence rankings for the 2018 season. At the end, a discussion about week one's slate of games crescendos with some Bobby Petrino bashing... you can tell football is close. Enjoy!
In this episode, Pete and Robbie preview the Hokies' second six 2018 opponents: UNC, GT, BC, Pitt, Miami, and UVA. We're less than one month away from football season!
In this episode, Pete and Robbie preview the Hokies' first six 2018 opponents: FSU, W&M, ECU, ODU, Duke, and Notre Dame. Enjoy this first taste of the upcoming VT football season!
Supposedly, it's the offseason, but you wouldn't know it based on the flood of activity within the VT football program. Robbie and Pete rehash the Devyn Ford whiff, break down the now dire cornerback situation, and discuss the troubling rumors surrounding Josh Jackson. It's not all bad though, the recent success on the recruiting trail has helped swing momentum back in the right direction. A wild spring could turn into a crazy summer for the Hokies.
With spring practice wrapped up, and the NFL Draft in the rearview mirror, there was plenty of content for this episode. Robbie and Pete covered a lot of ground, breaking down the Galen Scott resignation, the history-making first night of the draft, and the spring game itself. The pod comes off the rails a bit around the hour mark, and is a little NSFW, but, hopefully, our more immature listeners find it enjoyable. Apologies in advance for those offended; just some goofing around after a couple beers... probably best to listen with a beverage of your own.
Jonathan French of thekeyplay.com returns to the podcast to discuss Virginia Tech's covert spring practices. Robbie and Pete prod him about position battles, emerging young talent, and what to expect from the Hokies in 2018. While the coaches have been cagey in response to recent questions, French was not, giving some real, up-front answers. Really good stuff in this one, enjoy!
The Hokies are going dancing, again! For the second straight season, coach Buzz Williams has Virginia Tech in the NCAA Tournament. In this episode, Robbie and Pete take an in-depth look at Tech's seeding and break down the opening round matchup vs. Alabama. Like last year, no. 1 seed Villanova will be waiting for the Hokies in the round of 32. Let's hope VT can get there this time.
The boys are back. After making you wait far too long for a new podcast, Pete and Robbie bring the heat recapping Virginia Tech's busy winter months. This episode covers the unbelievable stretch for the men's basketball team, National Signing Day and what it meant for our recruiting class, and takes an in-depth look at the 2018 football schedule. There's even a little combine/draft talk at the end (you know you're looking forward to Tim Settle's 40-yard dash). Enjoy!
This episode marks then end of the 2017 VT football season. Robbie and Pete recap Tech's performance in the Camping World Bowl and talk about the future of QB Josh Jackson. Since the game, multiple Hokies have announced an early jump to the the NFL; the guys discuss what it means for VT and where they may go in the 2018 draft. The men's basketball team is the subject of the final segment, and their recent play has, once again, raised the expectations of getting back to the big dance. It's going to be an interesting winter/spring for the Hokies, make sure to stay tuned to the podcast for all the latest news coverage.
With so much going on in the world of Virginia Tech athletics, this holiday edition of Two Deep is jam-packed. Pete and Robbie recap the Kentucky game, react to the 2018 football signees, and preview the upcoming Camping World Bowl vs. Oklahoma State. The guys also talk donations and taxes (it's true). Finally, stick around for a discussion about expensive beer and the last ATS picks of the season. Happy holidays to all of our loyal listeners out there, your support is much appreciated. Go Hokies!
Buzz Williams has the Hokies off to a hot start once again. With a record of 9-1 and dreams of getting back to the tournament, this sharp-shooting team will really find out what they're made of out in Lexington this weekend. Because of the magnitude of the matchup, Robbie and Pete felt it was necessary to preview the game in grand fashion. Downtown Crown Wine and Beer in Gaithersburg, MD provided the backdrop for this monster episode, and the results do not disappoint. Kentucky superfans Richard and Mike Drake help the guys breakdown the game in more detail than you ever could have wanted. They talk program history, Coach Cal, where this current UK team stands, and how they think VT will fair in Rupp Arena. Honestly, nothing gets held back; there's JMU bashing, Seth Greenberg bashing, Louisville bashing, Duke bashing, and, of course, UVA bashing. There's even a volatile beer break! It's really something, so, please, enjoy responsibly.
The committee has spoken. Virginia Tech finished the regular season at no. 22 in both the AP poll and CFP rankings. The guys recap championship weekend and react to VT's bowl matchup vs. Oklahoma State. They also officially announce that the VT-Kentucky Preview episode will be recorded at Downtown Crown Wine and Beer in Gaithersburg, MD on Saturday, December 9th starting at noon. Come on out and have a beer with us if you're in the area.
14 straight! The Hokies beat the 'hoos yet again, capping off a strong 2017 campaign. The guys recap the outstanding defensive performance and detail the sparse, but crucial, offensive highlights. Pete and Robbie also discuss their thoughts on the season as a whole, what next year's roster could look like, and potential Bowl destinations. Stick around for Championship weekend picks against the spread at the end, which includes four AP top-10 matchups. It was a season Tech fans should be proud of; the program is definitely trending up.
Goal-line stand FTW! Saturday's victory against Pitt produced one of the best moments in Lane Stadium history. Pete and Robbie recap every exciting detail before shifting their focus to Hate Week. That's right, the battle for the Commonwealth Cup starts at 8pm on Black Friday and the guys are just a little bit nervous. Here's hoping the Hokies can make it 14 straight over UVA.
The triple option strikes again. For the second year in a row, VT loses the Techmo Bowl in frustrating fashion. This episode is not for the faint of heart as the game provided plenty of unsettling moments for the guys to breakdown. Pitt is up next, and while the Panthers are not good, they are another opponent that historically gives Tech fits. It would be nice to see something from the offense going into the UVA game, otherwise the Hokies' winning streak could be in serious jeopardy come Black Friday. Buckle up, the 2017 season may have a bumpy finish.
That one hurt. Unfortunately, the Hokies have now contributed to "the U is back" narrative. Pete and Robbie recap the dismal showing against Miami and try to put it behind them before previewing Georgia Tech. There's no time to pout as the triple option demands our full attention. With plenty left to play for, let's hope the team comes out angry and pulls off the win down in Atlanta.
Here we go again. With a definitive victory over Duke, the Hokies are primed for their third big game of the 2017 season. Joe Lanza from The Key Play joins the guys to discuss the VT's 7-1 start, and preview the match-up vs. the undefeated Miami Hurricanes. Both teams have CFB playoff aspirations, and the Coastal title is very much on the line. This game could also act as a springboard for the VT-Miami rivalry to re-enter the national spotlight. Grab a beer and get your popcorn ready, this is going to be a good one.
"Let the punishment match the offense." Forget the NCAA's ruling, Fuente and the boys gave UNC the beating they deserved. Pete and Robbie recap all the action from an amazing Homecoming game. Duke is up next and will provide a much stiffer challenge. Is this a trap game? That's up for debate. What's not is how well VT has played against lowly competition this season. Hopefully, the team can keep the momentum going into the Miami game. Let's go... Hokies!
What a time to have a bye. With the Hokies home resting, the college football world got turned upside down by unranked opponents. Now, let's hope Tech can avoid the same fate against an ailing UNC team this Saturday. The guys tell you everything you need to know about the 2017 Tarheels, and probably a bunch of things you don't. Pete is leaning towards a homecoming blowout, while Robbie is a little more conservative in his prediction. This is your standard take care of business game; a focused VT does just that. Go Hokies!
A win is a win. In a weird environment, the Hokies took care of Boston College and head into the bye week at 5-1. Pete and Robbie recap the game and discuss upcoming opponents with the help of some Pumpkin beers. It's time for VT to get healthy before the Coastal race really gets going next weekend. As usual, the guys give their picks ATS at the end. Rest up, it's going to be an interesting second half of the season.
So that didn't go well. Clemson played like the 2nd best team in the nation and VT... um... did not. Despite the loss, there were plenty of fun things from the weekend to talk about. In fact, this pod is jam-packed. The guys recap College GameDay, the bars, pregame festivities, Enter Sandman, along with the game itself. Pete and Billdozer even recorded a drunken postgame pod that has been heavily edited for your enjoyment. Robbie's favorite opponent, BC, is up next and you'll get a full preview for that game as well. Stick around for ATS picks at the end and general college football talk. Oh yeah, this was also our first of two pumpkin beer episodes. The Hokie fans repped hard this past weekend, everyone should be proud.
The stage is set. Virginia Tech did what they had to do against Old Dominion and now the match-up we've all been waiting for is just days away. The guys could not be more excited. After moving quickly through a recap of the ODU game, they turn their full attention towards Clemson. The Tigers boast a dominating defense and a reloaded offense; beating them will be no small feat. However, as you would expect, Pete and Robbie provide reasons for optimism despite the talent discrepancy. This is the game Fuente and the boys marked on their calendar after last year's ACC Championship; here's hoping they pull off the win. LET'S GO, HOKIES!
Well that was a beatdown. Virginia Tech took ECU behind the woodshed on Saturday and Josh Jackson put the rest of the ACC on notice with 5 pass TDs. Robbie and Pete review the offensive highlights and praise the D for a great team performance. Next up is ODU. Will this be a speed bump or a trap before Clemson? The guys get your minds right before discussing the all-time best Lane Stadium match-ups. ATS picks at the end. Go Hokies!
The thrill is gone, for now at least. While VT did pitch a shutout, the win over UD won't be a game many remember. The guys break down what they saw on Saturday, and then move on to ECU; another tune-up before Clemson at the end of the month... hopefully. ATS picks at the end. Go Hokies!
1-0! After ten straight season opening losses against ranked opponents, Virginia Tech finally gets one. And what a game it was! Robbie and Pete recap all the action from a memorable night, and discuss Josh Jackson's immediate impact. Before moving on to Delaware, the guys stress the importance of this win and what it could mean leading up to the Clemson game. Stick around for ATS picks and a VT score prediction at the end. Man, does beating West Virginia feel good! Enjoy it, Hokies.
Jonathan French from thekeyplay.com joins the guys to help preview the opener against West Virginia. In typical French fashion, he articulately lays out every reason to be fearful of the Mountaineers, yet, he still likes Tech's chances. Robbie and Pete provide some additional thoughts and finish the pod with their first picks segment of the year. College football season is finally here... let's go, Hokies!
In this jumbo edition of Two Deep, Robbie and Pete preview every aspect of the upcoming Virginia Tech football season. Rankings, returning production, position groups, record predictions - it's all here. There's even some all-time great music to help get you through it. Welcome to year three of the podcast, should be the best yet!
Joe Lanza from thekeyplay.com joined the guys last Sunday to discuss all things Virginia Tech. Topics included the coaches poll, Sam Rogers, Ty Outlaw, Buzz's hair, the new Cassell floor, #GAINZ, wide receiver depth, recruiting, offensive line play, WVU, Dana Holgorsen, Bud Foster's hair, the 2017 schedule, and The Key Play. With only a few more weeks until football season, you can hear the excitement in Pete and Robbie's voices (or maybe they're just drunk). Enjoy this last taste of the off-season!
College Football media days are upon us! No better time for the guys to finish out their 2017 opponent previews. This episode is pretty long, but if you make it to the end, Robbie stumps Pete with a mystery hip-hip song.
Pete and Robbie interview Chris Van Dine from Phil Steele's College Football Preview magazine. Chris provides insight on VT's upcoming season and lets the guys know how the staff over at the magazine believes the ACC will shake out.
In this episode, the guys update you on the latest recruiting news, preview the first half of the 2017 VT Football schedule, and enjoy some beers perfect for the hot summer weather. If you make it to the end of the pod, you'll hear them answer a couple twitter questions as well.
Another Spring Game is in the books... well, "game" is a bit strong since it was an offense vs. defense scrimmage again this year... nevertheless, there were some things to get excited about. Robbie and Pete breakdown all the action and give their thoughts on each position group. They also discuss VT's prospects for the NFL Draft and make their predictions for points per game in 2017.
Hope springs eternal. Well it does for Pete and Robbie at least. While there are plenty of reasons to be concerned about Virginia Tech's chances to repeat as Coastal champs in 2017, the guys provide just as many reasons to be optimistic. In this episode, the puzzle that is the spring depth chart gets discussed in great detail, with special attention paid to the brewing QB competition. Who will step up at WR? Who will fill the right side of the offensive line? What springtime beers should I be buying? The answers to all these questions are just a click away.
Finally! After a long hiatus, Virginia Tech is back in the NCAA Tournament. Pete and Robbie gleefully recap the historic season before breaking down the first round game against Wisconsin. It's a tough draw, but that doesn't stop the guys from getting ahead of themselves and discussing a potential match-up vs. #1 overall seed Villanova in round two. It feels so good to be back in the big dance; sit back and enjoy the ride!
Welcome to Blacksburg! The members of Virginia Tech's 2017 recruiting class have officially signed their letters of intent to play football for the Hokies. Pete and Robbie discuss the key commitments, provide analysis on the class as a whole, and even attempt some film review. Overall, it's a very exciting group of recruits; a handful of players could have key roles right away for Coach Fuente. The guys also go over the 2017 schedule and give their early predictions on next year's record. Is Robbie actually optimistic? Find out on the first episode of season three of Two Deep!
VT BACK! 10 wins and it feels so good. What a wild game; down 24-0 at the half, the stage was set for an all-time comeback. The guys recap all the action, and have to come clean on their whereabouts for the second half. The discussion then turns bittersweet as our star QB, Jerod Evans, announced he's leaving VT early to enter the NFL draft. Pete and Robbie offer their thoughts on the matter and what it could mean for the offense in 2017. Make sure to stick around for National Championship Picks. It's really hard to believe the season is over, but what a season it was. Go Hokies!
It's the most wonderful time of the year... Bowl season! With the help of Jonathan French from The Key Play, Pete and Robbie preview the upcoming match-up against the Arkansas Razorbacks. It should be a good time down in Charlotte, and the guys are optimistic about VT getting to 10 wins. Stick around for Bowl picks and VT trivia at the end. From your friends here at Two Deep, have a safe and happy holiday!
So close! Unfortunately, VT came up short on Saturday night vs. the Clemson Tigers. It was a valiant effort by the Hokies, one that most of the media didn't expect. Robbie and Pete recap the game while also talking Heisman, Belk Bowl, and some Buzzketball. It's been a great fall for Hokie sports; let's hope it continues throughout the winter.
We're going to Disney World! The Hokies destroyed UVA and are heading to the ACC title game in Orlando. The guys recap the beatdown and discuss the impact of ACC coach of the year Justin Fuente. Clemson's bevy of talent provides reason to be doubtful of VT's chances on Saturday night, but Pete and Robbie detail their keys to victory. Winning the ACC would be huge for Virginia Tech, but there will be no shame in a loss. Let's see if the boys from Blacksburg can pull the upset!
What a comeback! It was more dramatic than it needed to be, but VT got the win over Notre Dame. The guys break down the historic victory and talk about their trip to South Bend. More importantly, it's hate week and the Coastal crown is on the line for the Hokies against UVA. Win, and VT plays Clemson for the ACC title; lose, and the season is a disappointment. Pete and Robbie discuss the many reasons Tech should get the W, but they still couldn't be more nervous. Let's hope it's a happy Thanksgiving weekend.
During the second part of Monday's recording, the guys talked a little hoops. They recapped the opening night win over Maine, and Robbie prodded Pete with some big-picture questions about VT's prospects for the 2016-2017 season. Finally, the guys made their weekly ACC picks against the spread. Both are going with the Hokies, shocker.
Swing and a miss! The Hokies had a chance to clinch the Coastal against GT last Saturday, but whiffed in spectacular fashion. The amount of costly mistakes was mind-boggling, and the guys do their best to sift through the wreckage. After the recap, Pete and Robbie preview the match-up against Notre Dame, which, unfortunately, has lost a lot of its luster. Nevertheless, it's a chance for VT to get back on track before the UVA game, one they need to win desperately.
Whew, that was a close one! Things got a little dicey down in Durham on Saturday, but the Hokies got the W. The guys give their thoughts on the narrow victory, and then get you ready for game against Georgia Tech. GT's triple option offense always makes for an interesting match-up, but their defense has a lot of holes, something Fuente needs to exploit. With only two ACC games left on the schedule, the Coastal crown is within reach; we'll see if VT can validate their no. 14 playoff committee ranking.
Ding-dong, the witch is dead! That's right, we finally beat Pitt at Heinz field! Virginia Tech is in full control of the Coastal and it feels so good. The guys recap the gritty performance and rail on Pat Narduzzi's sideline antics (what a clown). Now that the Hokies have cleared this major hurdle, they need to be in full take-care-of-business mode. The home stretch of the season starts with Duke and coach Cutcliffe. After the preview, Pete and Robbie make their weekly picks against the spread.
In the second portion of The Rivermill recording, the guys previewed Thursday's match-up against Pittsburgh. You can tell they're getting a bit toasty, but the content is still there. Pete and Robbie both gush about James Conner, and give plenty of reasons to be fearful of Heinz field, which has proven to be too big a hurdle for the Hokies in years past. If VT can finally beat the Panthers at home, the rest of the season could be special.
VICTORY! VT got a huge bounce-back win against the Hurricanes on Thursday night, 37-16. Pete and Robbie are beyond pumped in this episode, enjoying themselves quite a bit while recording on site at The Rivermill. Ryan Dye of The Key Play was also kind enough to stop by, giving the guys a sideline report and providing some insight on the Coastal race. The loss to Syracuse seemed to get Tech's mind right; the rest of the division better watch out.
That sound you hear is the Hokies crashing back down to earth. After three impressive wins in a row, VT had a real clunker of game, losing to Syracuse 31-17. After recapping what went wrong, Pete and Robbie put lipstick on a pig suggesting that this loss can be used for motivation going into Miami. Let's hope that Coach Fuente and the boys agree with that. A HUGE Thursday night game awaits this team on a short week. Can the Hokies pick up the pieces and remain in the driver's seat for the Coastal?! Here's hoping.
VT 34, UNC 3. In Chapel Hill. Wow. The guys are riding high after the blowout win over the Tar Heels. Tech loves the slop and it showed. This weekend, the VT road warriors will head to the Carrier Dome, a venue that has magical powers according to Pete and Robbie. Though this game screams TRAP, there is reason to be optimistic. The picks ATS reflect that.
The guys bring in Joe Lanza from The Key Play to help them preview UNC. Both teams are in the AP top 25 after last weekend, and the game couldn't be bigger for the Hokies. All three guys profess their love/hate for Ryan Switzer before making their predictions on how the game will go on Saturday. As always, Robbie and Pete pick the remaining ACC games at the end. Hold on to your turkey legs, Hokie Nation; the season is about to get interesting.
Hokies win! Another great game by VT last Saturday, crushing ECU 54-17. Robbie and Pete recap every aspect of the match-up and revise their expectations for Tech going forward. Colby Dant of the Sports Gambling Podcast then joins the guys for their weekly picks segment and gives some of his favorite plays for this upcoming weekend. No game for the Hokies, but Two Deep doesn't believe in bye weeks.
SHUTOUT! The Hokies destroyed Boston College this past weekend, 49-0, and Pete and Robbie bask in the win. Both the offense and defense showed up big-time. However, the celebration can't last too long with ECU looming on the horizon. The Pirates will bring a challenging passing attack into Blacksburg on Saturday. Can VT finally get over the hump, or will ECU win for the third year in a row? The guys make their picks ATS, and thank a listener for an awesome gift. Kept it under an hour this time, enjoy!
The guys survived Bristol! Though their livers are still aching, Robbie and Pete had a fantastic time tearing it up with the Tennessee locals. In this episode, some light was shone on the BaB, and the dreaded game against Boston College was discussed. As always, picks ATS were made; third time's the charm with VT giving points...
The Hokies took care of business against Liberty and moved to 1-0. Robbie and Pete break down the win, and then get you ready for the long-awaited match-up in Bristol vs. the Vols. While both guys like VT against the spread, they don't agree on the outcome. This game is huge in every sense; hopefully, Coach Fuente has Tech ready for the big stage.
IT'S GAME WEEK! Finally, the season has arrived and the guys couldn't be more excited. In this episode Robbie and Pete are joined by Jonathan French from thekeyplay.com to discuss VT's offensive and defensive schemes. After the interview, they tell you what to look for in the opener against Liberty, and if you can make it to the end, you'll hear picks ATS for this weekend's awesome slate of games. Here's hoping for 1-0, GO HOKIES!
The 2016 Season Preview marks the start of year two for Two Deep. Robbie and Pete provide all the latest Hokie news and analyze the roster position-by-position. Record predictions, points per game, and general goals for the O and D are also discussed. The expectations for this year have been mixed, but the guys are optimistic. It should be an exciting first year in the new era of Hokie football.
In this episode the guys speak with Athlon Sports' Braden Gall. Braden provides insight on the preview mag's creation process, as well as some predictions for the upcoming season. Other topics include the Battle at Bristol, VT's quarterback situation, and the ACC potentially going to 9 games. After the interview, stick around for some Hokie recruiting news and what to look for in fall camp, which starts Thursday 8/4/16.
In a continuation of last episode, the guys finish previewing VT's 2016 opponents. They cover Duke, GT, Notre Dame, and UVA.
With the 2016 season about 50 days away, the guys dive deep into the second half of the Hokies schedule. Recruiting is the hot topic on social media, and it's been a bit of a cruel, cruel summer for VT; Robbie and Pete offer some perspective before getting into their Miami and Pitt previews.
It's the slowest part of the offseason, but the Two Deep guys don't take the summer off. In this episode Pete and Robbie take a look at the first half of the 2016 Virginia Tech football schedule. If you stick around all the way to the end (it's a long one), you'll hear Robbie fail miserably at VT trivia.
The title says it all. Robbie and Pete cover all the latest Hokie news and then dive as deep as they can into Fuente's first spring in Blacksburg. The spring "game" gets broken down, and the guys discuss which players they thought took a step forward. If you're really bored, stick around for Hokie trivia at the end of the show!
Dan Wolken of USA Today joins the guys to discuss the state of the VT Football program and what Coach Fuente's impact will be. Topics included recruiting, player development, and on-field expectations for 2016. There was even some Buzzketball talk at the end. This is a must-listen episode, Hokies.
Spring has got the guys sprung! There's a lot of excitement surrounding both the VT basketball and football programs these days. Pete and Robbie discuss the incredible end-of-the-season run for Hokie Hoops, as well as the raised expectations for 2016-2017. Spring football practice is also officially underway. Who will step up their game and contribute next year? Who's our QB going to be? Why isn't the spring game on TV? You've gotta listen to find out the "answers" to these very important questions.
The guys are back! Robbie and Pete cover all the things that have been going on with the Hokies this winter. From the Bowl win, to National Signing Day, to the 2016 schedule, no stone is left unturned. They even talk some hoops! Now grab a drink and turn up the volume.
In this episode, the guys discuss the new coaching staff, Fuente's recruiting, and the Hokies' bid to the Independence Bowl. It doesn't get much better than Shreveport, Louisiana in December... oh wait, I'm thinking of ANYWHERE else. From the disappointing Bowl to delicious winter beers, Pete and Robbie cover it all. Happy Holidays from Two Deep!
Pete channelled his inner Soulja Boy to celebrate the win over UVA. Turn your Hokie swag on, people.
Hokies win! Yes, that's right, VT beat UVA for the 12th straight year and the guys are pumped about it. Saturday also marked the hiring of a new head football coach in Blacksburg, Justin Fuente. Robbie and Pete offer their thoughts on the news and what it means for the Hokies going forward. Also, bowl possibilities are tossed around and championship game picks are made. Check it out, you won't be sorry.
IT'S HATE WEEK! The guys recap the tough loss to UNC, but, more importantly, talk about the matchup with rival UVA. A win means bowl eligibility; a loss would mean a sad ending for Frank. Just like your annoying relatives at the dinner table, Pete and Robbie don't hold anything back. Happy Thanksgiving, listeners!
This episode focuses on the big win down in Atlanta and previews Frank's last home game versus UNC. The Hokies can become bowl eligible with a win this weekend, and the importance of the game is not lost on the guys. Stick around until the end for ACC picks as well as "college story time", where Robbie gives us the final installment of the Brendon trilogy.
This song was obviously made in honor of Frank's upcoming retirement. The beat is from "Right Above It" by Lil Wayne and Drake.
In this week's episode, the guys take a look at VT's season stats before previewing GT. It seems Dogfish Head beers are the perfect compliment to cursing the triple option. ACC picks are also made. It's just Pete and Robbie this week (no fun guests), deal with it.
In part two of this monster podcast, Joe and the guys discuss the top candidates to replace Frank. They each give their favorites, as well as some sleeper candidates you may not have thought of. Robbie also interviews Joe about what's going on over at The Key Play, how he built and maintains that community, and what TKP has in store for its readers over the next few months. Really, really good stuff if you're a fan of the site.
In part one of this two part podcast, Joe Lanza, editor of thekeyplay.com, joins the guys to help them break down the win over BC and the announcement that Head Coach Frank Beamer will retire at the end of the season. They discuss what Frank means to the program, the legacy he leaves behind, and how the VT job looks to the outside.
Addazio, bad offense, and good defense; that's what BC is this year. The guys talk about their playmakers and give their keys to the game.
Mike helps the guys pick this week's match-ups. Thursday provides the best game of the weekend in the ACC with UNC going to no. 23 Pitt, Clemson at NC State could be fun, and our beloved Hokies take on BC as a slim favorite on the road.
Mike McDaniel from insidetheacc.com joins the guys to discuss all things Hokie football. Topics included Beamer's potential retirement, poor coaching decisions, heartbreaking defeat, and how we'll attack BC's ferocious defense. ACC picks are made and Pete recalls an anecdote involving an unused condom in "college story time".
The Hokies take another loss and the guys vent about it. They tackle what went wrong and theorize on why the team seems to be playing with no emotion. In the second half of the episode the focus turns to Duke. The Blue Devils will bring a strong D to Blacksburg and have a bunch of playmakers, including safety DeVon Edwards, who leads the nation in yards per kick return. ACC picks get made as well. It's homecoming, so come back to the podcast, we've missed you.
This song is about Al Golden's tenuous grasp on his job. It uses the beat from Ignition Remix by R. Kelly.
This segment of our Cellar recording previews the Miami game. We were kind of drunk by this point and it was recorded before the Miami/FSU game. It should be noted that we failed to mention Miami WR Stacy Coley. He hadn't played the previous three games, but he broke out against FSU with 7 catches, 139 yards, and a TD; definitely another name to watch.
Mason Naumann of thekeyplay.com joins the guys at The Cellar in Blacksburg. Powder puff football, VT's offensive identity, and our "fake it until you make it" defense all get covered in this interview. Follow him @3rdand31 on Twitter.
Matthew Warner of the allsportsdiscussion.com podcast joins the guys for an interview at The Cellar in Blacksburg. They talk ACC football division races, what to look for against Miami, and even get ACC basketball predictions from Matthew. Follow him @hokiesmash on twitter.
Recorded at The Cellar, this week's episode recaps the big win against NC State and previews the upcoming Miami game. The guys were also joined by Mason Naumann of thekeyplay.com and Matthew Warner of the All Sports Discussion podcast. Many drinks were consumed and a good time was had by all.
This week's song uses the beat from Zac Brown Band's "Chicken Fried". It's a happier song than the last two and hopefully it changes our luck.
The guys lament yet another Tech loss, and have a brief state of the program discussion before previewing the matchup against NC State. Mike from Raleigh sent in some thoughts on the Wolfpack, and Pete remembers being a jerk during "college story time". You might say this episode is... packed... Sorry, we really hope you still listen.
This week's song uses the beat from "See You Again" by Wiz Khalifa and Charlie Puth. A sad song for a sad week.
After the tough loss to ECU, Robbie and Pete turn to pumpkin beers for comfort; a little bit of sweet to go with their salty attitudes. The guys preview the matchup against Pitt and Robbie recalls an odd roommate in "college story time". It's the start of ACC play; a tradition unlike any other. #goacc
This week's song uses the beat from "What's The Difference" by Dr. Dre. Short song this week.
Ahoy, matey! This week's pod recaps the good showing against Purdue and previews the upcoming game against the Pirates. The guys drink nautical-themed beers, make their picks, and introduce a new segment called "college story time". Shiver me timbers, this one was good.
The Hokies head to West Lafayette, Indiana this week to face the Boilermakers and the guys tell you what to watch for. They also give their thoughts on the Furman win and make their weekly picks; it's the ACC/Big Ten Challenge: Football Edition!
Put to the beat of "Teach Me How To Dougie" this song is a silly attempt at describing a Hokie.
The guys recap the OSU game from start to finish, mourn the loss of Michael Brewer, and attempt to find positives after a tough opener. They also address the QB situation and why the match-up against Furman could be scary. Oh, and week 2 picks are made. Buckle-up, it's gonna be a bumpy ride!
