It's Episode 100!! This week instead of music news I'm doing something a little different: A recap of the top 5 music news stories I've covered across 99 episodes. I also have an important update on the Live Nation DOJ settlement comment period, a personal story about a musician who needs some support right now, music history, and an all-women indie music lineup from Phoenix, Central Massachusetts, and Boston. Thank you for supporting me and the show the past 2 ½ years!

It's Episode 99! This week Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey just introduced legislation to cap ticket resale prices and it's named after a Noah Kahan album. Sony just filed a brand new lawsuit against AI music generator Udio, and this time we're talking 30,000 songs and $4.5 billion in potential damages. TikTok is testing a deepfake detection tool and it involves scanning your face. Plus I have a very special debut single preview from Vermont artist Shaely O'Dou that I think you are going to love, your marketing tip, music history, and indie tracks from Boston, Vermont, and Missouri! Let's get into it!

It's Episode 98! International artists are being priced and processed out of touring in the US, and the numbers are really alarming. StubHub's CEO was just exposed as a part owner of a fund that scalps tickets on his own platform (yes, really). And the DOJ's proposed Live Nation settlement is now open for public comment until September 4th, meaning you actually have a chance to weigh in before a federal judge decides if it's good enough. Plus your marketing tip, music history, and indie tracks from Phoenix, Boston, and LA/Seattle! Let's get into it!

It’s Episode 96! This week's episode is a good one. We've got an indie artist who is suing Spotify over some pretty alarming algorithm allegations, the heartbreaking story of the singer behind Josie and the Pussycats who has seen almost nothing in residuals in 25 years, a guy in the UK who just got sentenced to prison for burning CDs in 2026 (yes you read that right) and Olivia Rodrigo doing something amazing that I really needed to hear this week. Plus your marketing tip, music history, and indie tracks from Massachusetts, Arizona, Connecticut, and London.
Also- I teased the next Montapalooza date in episode 95 and now I can make it official. Mark your calendars for Saturday July 17th, 2027! We're moving to summer and I could not be more excited about it. Tune in and get all the details!

It’s Episode 95! It has been a very full few weeks and I have a LOT to catch you up on. First and most importantly — Montapalooza happened. Our first ever music festival went down on May 30th and I have so much to tell you about it. This week's music news is wild. Google is arguing that uploading your music to YouTube may have already given them permission to use it for AI training, the musician’s union just turned around and sued Universal and Warner for doing the exact same thing the labels publicly called out AI companies for doing, and Prince's vault is open with ten previously unreleased recordings spanning 4 decades. Plus your weekly marketing tip, music history, and indie tracks from Arizona, Boston, and Ireland. Tap play!

It’s Episode 89! In this episode, I’m covering some major music news, including The U.S. government’s antitrust case against Live Nation has suddenly been settled, but the story isn’t over yet as dozens of states plan to continue pursuing the fight over ticketing competition and consumer harm.
I also break down Apple Music’s new “AI transparency tags,” designed to label when artificial intelligence was used in a track’s creation. It’s an interesting step toward transparency, but the big question is how effective it will really be.
And in a cultural twist, some Gen Z and millennial listeners are stepping away from streaming and rediscovering CDs and other physical media as a way to experience music more intentionally. I tell you why.
Plus, I’ve got 5 wonderful indie tracks, some music history moments that changed the industry forever, a marketing tip about engaging in Facebook groups, and a fascinating science story about NASA successfully changing the orbit of an asteroid.

It’s Episode 86! This week I dive into the latest music industry shifts, starting with Bandcamp's bold new policy to officially ban music generated by artificial intelligence to "keep Bandcamp human". We recap the historic wins from the 68th Grammy Awards, where Bad Bunny made history with the first Spanish-language Album of the Year, and discuss why artists should—and do—use their platforms to speak on social issues.
The episode also covers why the Red Hot Chili Peppers are distancing themselves from a new Netflix documentary and provides an update on the Mesa Music Festival's new dates in October. For the creators, I offer a marketing tip on why avoiding "rage-bait" is essential for a sustainable brand. Finally, we wrap up with a positive story about an artist turning a French wheat field into a giant photographic image using nothing but photosynthesis.

It’s Episode 85! No music again this week but I’ve got the second half of my interview with my good friend, Mike Zimmerlich from Omelet Prevail and Creatives Prevail Podcast. We talk about why diversification is no longer optional, how relying on a single platform or revenue stream puts artists at risk, and what the rise of AI-generated music means for streaming payouts and long-term sustainability. Mike also shares his perspective on using AI ethically, not as a replacement for creativity, but as a tool for saving time, improving marketing, and working smarter.
We wrap up by coming back to the most important thing of all: Craft. In a world flooded with low-quality content, intentional, human-made work still stands out, and audiences are actively searching for it.
If you’re an independent musician trying to balance creativity with sustainability, this episode is a must-listen! Before the chat I finally share with you a big announcement I've been teasing for several months now. It's such a relief to get Montapalooza Music Festival out in the world!

It’s Episode 84! No music this week but I’ve got an interview for you with my good friend, Mike Zimmerlich from Omelette Prevail and Creatives Prevail Podcast. In this first part, we are diving into the world of marketing and promotion for independent artists. With AI music flooding streaming platforms, it is harder than ever to be heard, so we are focusing on three specific things you can do right now to get more eyes and ears on your music.
We cover auditing and updating your profiles, short vs. long form video, and ways to collaborate that you might not be thinking about.
Next week will be the second part of our interview, discussing deeper business topics such as diversifying your income, and a more ethical uses of AI. Enjoy!

It’s Episode 83! This week I dive into some of the biggest issues facing artists and creators right now. There’s an increase in trends that could hurt independent artists: Rising digital ticket scams and what they mean for indie shows, major lawsuits over unpaid streaming royalties, and the growing flood of AI-generated music and podcasts hitting streaming platforms. I break down why these trends matter, how they impact discovery and trust, and why direct fan support is more important than ever for independent artists.
Plus, I share new indie music, key moments in music history, a practical marketing reminder for creators, and a bit of nerdy news. Always grateful for your support!

It’s Episode 80! This week I'm diving into the biggest news shaking up the music world, and I'm sharing some great independent music with you. First, the good news: the UK government has cracked down on ticket scalping, making it illegal to profit from reselling tickets. But there's drama, too: the rise of AI music clones hit Spotify hard when a fake account copied King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard's music, and I discuss what this means for independent artists. On a more positive AI note, I cover how rapper Beanie Sigel is using AI technology to bring back his classic voice. Plus, I talk about Billy McFarland's latest, the PHNX Festival, which actually happened, and I share my top Instagram marketing tips for musicians!

It’s Episode 65! I’ve got a lot to say this week (I mean, I do every week.) I’m breaking down some big music news, including the strange rise of an AI-generated band and why I’m not here for it. I also dig into the new HITS Act that just passed—finally some good news for independent artists, but at what cost? Plus, Fyre Fest is back in the headlines (yep), and Devo is getting a documentary treatment. I’m also sharing some music history highlights, a quick marketing tip, and as always, some fantastic music from several indie bands. Let’s go!

I interviewed my longtime friend Jack Mangan. I've known Jack for over 20 years, and he just launched an incredible new nonprofit called SLAM—Support Life and Music.
In our conversation, Jack shared his journey from musician and podcaster to industry advocate, and how he realized there was a real need for support in the music community. We talked about everything from how tough it is to make a living in music, to how SLAM is building programs like online support groups and informative panels to help musicians feel less alone. It was such an inspiring chat, please follow SLAM on all the socials and help spread the word!

They are releasing it Sunday February 23rd, 6 years after the original release and show.
We chat about the band’s beginnings, and then we talk about the album, the reasons why for re-releasing and also dive into a little marketing and promo chat. I’ll also sprinkle some songs from the album throughout, including a tune from Daphne’s band Daphne and the Glitches. AND you’ll hear this show’s theme song in its entirety- such a great track. Such a fun time being silly with these guys! Wade Cota is the lead singer of the band SugarWater, and also came in 4th on this past season of American Idol. We go back to how Tupac inspired Wade to write, why fronting a metal band wasn't for him, and how SugarWater came to be.
Of course I ask about the Idol experience, the good, bad, and what was up with the music choices. Then we talk about the big show on June 28th at Marquee theater, and what they are working on in the studio currently.
I only give a tease of both the Wyves track and the new track from SugarWater, I want you to go and check out both of these bands (Spotify, KWSS, live, etc), but I do let you hear the AustnAmeliA track "Brand New" which features Wade in its entirety at the end.
