Movie Musing is a film podcast for discussing and debating current and classic cinema (and sometimes TV). Co-hosts Quentin, Demetrios, & Matt hope to share some knowledge of film and to find people with unique perspectives- this way we can learn more about the world of movies and what movies can tell us about the real world. The analysis is clean but not always conventional.
"The Matrix" is a popular, beloved classic of the Sci-Fi and Action genres, still holding up to this day. What is equally as impressive is just how rich it is in big philosophical and scientific ideas. In this episode, Quentin is joined by Thomas, a scientist who explores some of the concepts hinted at in the Matrix universe and explains what it (largely) gets right.

The 2017 Oscars are most remembered for the Best Picture Winner announcement debacle where 'La La Land' was briefly named the champion, before 'Moonlight' getting the nod. But this gaffe overshadows what was a truly impressive year of cinema.

"Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" is a recent adaptation of the acclaimed children's book series by Alvin Schwartz and unlike recent horror titles featuring children, it is truly made for a young adult audience. Though we felt some parts were better than others, we felt individual scenes merit a lot of discussion. Eventually this opened up a discussion about what other media moments truly frightened us when we were young (30:00).

Ari Aster took the indie circuit by storm with his mighty horror debut 'Hereditary,' and lightning may have struck twice because he seems to have shaken off any semblance of a sophomore slump. In 'Midsommar,' we explore how the trauma can radically change people, the horror that follows, and whether social and cultural barriers can mask underlying truths.

Why do we identify as "a fan" when we like something? Sure, we may love the content associated with a fictional world, but there is often something about it that resonates with us in our daily lives. This has been a unique opportunity for cinema goers and television aficionados in the online era and it has ushered in many new opportunities. Some are good, such as creating a community, sharing insight, and even influencing studios to produce good content with them in mind. But there are two sides of the coin. Studios now can't escape the fan formula when filming new flicks and sometimes the work suffers for it. And not to mention that the loudest fan voices can be amplified in bad ways. Join us as we explore the in's and out's of what it is to be a fan in the 21st century.

What's true in a fictional world and when are interpretations valid? That all depends on who you ask. There are certainly times when creators get overzealous (looking at you, J.K. Rowling), but what about when the audience is out of line and the author is validating concepts that are being overlooked? 'Call Me By Your Name' is a sprawling romance that deals with the pain of closeted gay relationships, but also the wonder of being young and in love. Martin McDonagh's 'Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri' is a dark comedy that manages to be sad, painful, and thought-provoking, all being downright funny. Like him or loathe him, Tarantino is one of the most acclaimed directors working today and he launched his career in epic fashion with his debut 'Reservoir Dogs.' What sets his work apart? It certainly isn't originality. It is his slick style and brilliant screenwriting- and in spite of having next to no budget, 'Reservoir Dogs' is an absolute classic, since all it needed was Tarantino's touch.

For this episode, Mark and Quentin each assemble their own “Suicide Squad” of five villains and debate which team would be better equipped to stop Darth Vader and the Empire from invading Manhattan (without making things worse, of course!).
To build up to this debate, they give their thoughts on the second major film to be released this year in the DC Cinematic Universe, Suicide Squad. We gave it a fair shot, and there’s plenty of both good and bad aspects to discuss, but this movie seems to be another example of style over substance from Zack Snyder and crew. Then, after briefly offering opinions, predictions, and hopes for Rogue One and its new trailer.
