Covid hit the travel and events industry hard, leaving companies with limited options and dried up revenue streams. Some decided to sit back and wait for things to “normalize” and others jumped to reinvent so they could save their companies and keep their team's employed. Sean Hoff of Moniker, a corporate retreat agency, is the perfect example of what can happen when you embrace change and choose reinvention over failure. Sean’s choices in the last five months kept his agency in tact and he can proudly say that not one of his employees was laid off during these tough months. He would be one of the very few in the travel/events industry that can say this. I admire Sean for his commitment to his team and to his clients and I know you will feel the same after listening to this episode.

We are speaking to the youngest female captain at Air Canada today - Jessica Traynor

When I started this podcast, I never imagined who I would get to meet along the way. Today’s episode is just another example of that. I have always been fascinated by this idea that millions of us wake up, walk out the door and have completely different days, doing completely different things. I think it is so cool what we can learn from each other as we all experience this life differently.

That is why it was a real pleasure to interview Jessica Traynor, the youngest female captain at Air Canada.

Jessica was Born and raised between the GTA and Peterborough. She Knew she wanted to be a pilot since grade 9 and it had a lot to do with the fact that her dad was a pilot. She started flight training in 2009 at the age of 18 at Sault College in Sault Ste. Marie Ontario in their 3-year Aviation Technology- Flight Program. Since then she has taught new students how to fly at the college as a Flight Instructor

There is a good chance you have been on one of jessica’s planes because she has flown with Thunder Airlines in Thunder Bay , Air Canada JAZZ and of course Air Canada. She has been with Air Canada since 2017. She Completed her Captain upgrade in May 2020, at the age of 28 as the youngest female to EVER upgrade at the company and no one has been able to claim that title for 84 years.

But like every super hero, when they take their cape off, they have other interests as well. Jessica enjoys travelling, cooking, riding horses and motorcycles and getting outdoors as much as possible. Her partner is also a Pilot at the company. his name is Colin Walker and he is a relief pilot on the 777. They met when they were both were flying medivac in Thunder Bay and They now live together in their first home in Barrie.

Here are a few highlights from our interview: 1. This one comes at the end of the episode, but It is one of my favourite pieces of advice she gives. Alison says, “It’s not that hard to stand out if you are the one prepared to do the hard word.” This statement is so powerful and reminds us that hard work continues to beat out talent every time. Alison’s attitude throughout her career was to take on projects, even if they were not assigned to her. She did not approach her life by her job title or what was fair for her to do. She took on as much as she knew she could achieve, so when a promotion came around she was practically doing the job anyways and it was a no brainer for her management team to give it to her. 2. You do not need to plan your entire career out today. For many of you, the thought of becoming president of an organization may seem incredibly intimidating when you are starting out your career so just know what you want in the next 3-5 years, focus on that and then when you get there you will naturally start discovering the next list of items you want to accomplish. Alison’s big dream was the manage her own Hudson Bay store, and she ended up managing the entire country! She took everything as it came and her dreams grew as her knowledge, experience and talent did. 3. The only person who can create balance for themselves is you. No one else is going to make sure you have balance so decide what is most important to you, acknowledge what it is that you are willing to sacrifice and communicate this clearly to your organization. 4. When you are at home with your family be fully present. Put your phones away and do not miss out on the special moments with your kids or significant other. If you are always 50% in one place and 50% in another you will never be able to 100% enjoy either. 5. Find ways to network and seek out mentorship that is authentic. While many organizations will have mentorship programs, this needs to be an authenticate and genuine relationship in order to get the most value out of it. If you are the mentee, it is your responsibility to manage the relationship.

Today on the podcast I am chatting with Chris Corcoran from Whispering Springs, Ontario’s premier glamping spot. If you have not heard of Glamping or Whispering Springs prepare for a new way of experiencing the great outdoors. King-sized beds instead of sleeping bags, mood lighting instead of flashlights, and a wine glass instead of a canteen – this is camping like you’ve never experienced. I am thrilled to have Chris on the podcast today. He is a proud member of the Corcoran family, who built the Whispering Springs retreat and he brings a whole new perspective to the park because of his background in holistic nutrition.

Chris takes us behind the scenes of the park, shares some insider secrets that have just launched for brides and grooms who want to get married this summer (following COVID rules of course), and even talks about how to set up a glamping experience in your own backyard.

If there is one thing this quarantine has brought many of us, it is closer to nature and the simple things in life. If you need a getaway this summer for you, your friends, your significant other or colleagues, you definitely want to check out whispering springs.

Love in the time of Corona Virus seems to be a hot topic, mostly because everyone is locked up with their significant other. This is like the dating hunger games and only some can survive. I have been asked multiple times how I am doing at home with my fiancé in our 1-bedroom condo. Most people ask with the assumption that I will have something to complain about, which has made it very apparent to me that we need to talk about Neon Peak Love. The Kind of love that is energizing and the kind of shit that makes you the last ones standing in the quarantine hunger games. This starts with choosing your partner wisely. On today's podcast I am talking about the struggles of dating, why dating apps are your friend and not your enemy, how to define what you want, and how to ensure you end up with a magnificent love and not some mediocre rollercoaster relationship.  Visit neonpeak.ca to read the blog post
