It is such an exciting time at St. Michael’s as we welcomed Hannah last week as our new Children’s Minister to join the Children & Youth Team!

We checked in with Hannah and asked her to let us all know a little about her

I’m Hannah and I’m delighted to be joining the youth team at St Michael’s. Myself and my fiancé Kevin live in Canada Water with our menagerie of pets, who I’m sure you’ll hear all about! Kevin and I met in our previous jobs, where I worked in the chaplaincy team and he in the hospitality team at Roehampton University. Prior to that, I worked in a lovely parish in East London as a pastoral assistant. I’m passionate about community and bringing the good news of Christ to children (and people of all ages!) in a compassionate, accessible and authentic way.

I have quite a lot of interests! I grew up in musical theatre and read Theatre at Goldsmiths, University of London. It remains one of my keenest hobbies. Kevin and I love animals, exploring, and generally being at one with nature – I’m a Shropshire lass by birth and the countryside never really leaves you. I find people and, specifically, brains really interesting and have a Masters in Psychology. I’m currently writing my second Masters thesis on the topic of how multidisciplinary healthcare teams can best support women with late-diagnosed ADHD with their wellbeing, participation and social/cognitive communication. Kevin loves history, technology and anything to do with aeroplanes. He currently works for a well known coffee company as well as dabbling in some freelance work in coding computer games, but has plans to train as a commercial pilot.

Kevin and I are due to get married in the Spring and will be with you until the Summer, when I will be (God willing!) qualifying as a paediatric Speech and Language Therapist and starting my PhD, again studying the topic of women and girls’ healthcare in relation to neurodiversity. We feel really blessed to be joining the church family at St Michael’s and are grateful to all who made the opportunity possible. Our prayers are with you all.”

Please make sure you give Hannah and Kevin a big welcome and pray for all their endeavours this year!

Last Sunday’s Harvest service was full of people! But if you couldn’t manage to attend or watch online, then we introduced everyone to the latest member of our St. Michael’s Staff Team – Lydia!

Lydia has joined us as our new Youth Minister working part-time to help support our young people and elevate their journeys through Christianity.

Lydia, with her husband Mark and daughter Tahlia, joined us in Sunday’s Service, and we encourage you to continue praying for them as they settle into life at St. Michael’s.

Lydia says she is “deeply passionate about helping young people reach a deeper relationship with God and creating community” and we hope as a church family we can support her with this mission!

Wow Wow Wow! What a Holiday Club we have had this year at St. Michael’s…

Amanda and her amazing team ran our St. Michael’s kids Holiday Club across 4 days, using every bit of the church grounds. From the halls, to the church, to the gardens, we had bouncy castles, inflatable limbo (!), messy play, water fun, crafting, songs, dancing and every under the sea theme activity you could imagine!

Throughout all of this fun ran the theme of Jesus and God’s love for each and everyone of us, and we were so blessed by many gifts and talents to make the week a real success.

Each year we welcome such an amazing mix of people and this year we met 110 children and had 75 volunteers – a real organisational feat!

We hope you enjoy some of the pictures below and keep sending any more you have to deepseadivers@se3.org.uk…

With the Venerable Alastair Cutting being announced as the new Bishop of Woolwich, The Revd Canon Dr Chigor Chike has also been announced as the next Archdeacon of Lewisham & Greenwich.

The Bishop of Southwark, The Rt Revd Christopher Chessun, said of the appointment: “Chigor is a priest with a pastoral heart, solid parish experience in East London, and great theological insight. He has a passion for social justice and, God willing, his enormous gifts will be a great blessing both to the archdeaconry and wider Diocese.”

Chigor has served as the Vicar of Emmanuel Church in Forest Gate, East London, for fourteen years. It is hoped he will come into post and begin his new ministry in Autumn 2024.

As a St. Michael’s family let us pray for Chigor and his family.

We are so blessed to have our amazing St. Michael’s Children’s Choir be part of our church family!

However, they do need our support! Led by professional musicians, who we now know fondly, the choir offers free high quality musical education to all children from all faiths and none, aged 6 and above, irrespective of musical ability. The choir is also a wonderful outreach project for St. Michael’s.

So, to help continue funding for this great choir, they are joining together with our local Rock Choir for a concert on 22nd June! Starting at 5pm, the event is free, with links and options to donate to the choir beforehand or on the night.

And in true St. Michael’s style there will also be refreshments at the back of the church for the concert.

So don’t miss out and come join in!

His Majesty The King has approved the nomination of The Venerable Alastair Cutting, Archdeacon of Lewisham & Greenwich, as the fourteenth Bishop of Woolwich in the Diocese of Southwark. Archdeacon Alastair will be consecrated as Bishop of Woolwich in a special service at Southwark Cathedral on 3 July.

Announcing the appointment, the Bishop of Southwark, The Rt Revd Christopher Chessun said: “It is with great joy that I share news of Alastair’s appointment to this key role in the diocese. Alastair is already very well regarded in the Woolwich Episcopal Area and has excellent relationships with clergy and lay people across both archdeaconries. I welcome him into the Episcopal Team and have no doubt that he will prove to be a wise and gracious Bishop of Woolwich who will prioritise our parishes and unify our churches in their mission and ministry. I commend Alastair and Kay to your prayers.”

Archdeacon Alastair described himself as being ‘surprised by joy’ to be appointed to the role, saying: “Being ‘Christ centred and outward focused’ isn’t just a motto or slogan for me; it’s what energises and empowers each daily encounter and conversation. I look forward to working with friends new and old in Southwark and Greenwich and Lewisham – and all our people and churches and communities here. May God bless us in the Woolwich Episcopal Area on this next phase of our shared pilgrimage.”

Alastair Cutting grew up in a Christian family in South India, where his parents were doctors in a rural village hospital. He made a personal commitment to faith at the age of nine. Before becoming archdeacon he served as a parish priest for 25 years, ministering in the diverse contexts of a Yorkshire mining parish, and an industrial village in Sheffield, as well as both rural and suburban contexts in Sussex. He is married to Kay, who is a teacher of children with profound and multiple learning difficulties and special needs and they have two grown-up daughters.

“I am delighted that Alastair has been chosen as the next Bishop of Woolwich,” added The Venerable Jonathan Sedgwick, Archdeacon of Southwark, “I have worked closely with Alastair as colleague archdeacons and know at first hand his commitment and love for the parishes, clergy and people in his care and in the wider episcopal area in all our glorious diversity. I look forward to working with him in this new role.”

Diocesan Secretary, Nicola Thomas said: “This appointment is great news, both for the Woolwich Episcopal Area and for our Diocese. I look forward to working alongside Alastair in his new role as we seek to make Southwark Vision a reality and see all of our parishes flourish.”

Archdeacon Alastair will succeed The Rt Revd Dr Karowei Dorgu, who died in September last year.

About Alastair Cutting

Alastair grew up in a Christian family in South India, where his parents were doctors in a remote village hospital. He gave his life to Christ at the age of nine and cannot recall ever not being a Christian.

Alastair was educated at Westhill College, Birmingham University, trained for ministry at St John’s College in Nottingham and gained a Masters at Heythrop College, University of London. Although Alastair trained for ministry in an Open Evangelical theological college context, he describes his personal spirituality as informed and nurtured through Celtic and Catholic traditions, too.

He served his title post at All Saints Woodlands in Doncaster, in the Diocese of Sheffield and was ordained priest in 1988. He served as Assistant Curate at Wadsley from 1989 and in 1991 was appointed Chaplain to The Nave Arts Centre and the Town Centre in Uxbridge, in the Diocese of London.

In 1996, Alastair was appointed Vicar of Copthorne, West Sussex, in the Diocese of Chichester, and from 2010 he served as Vicar of Henfield and Rector of Shermanbury and Woodmancote.

He has been elected twice to serve on the General Synod, and twice also elected as ProProlocutor of the House of Clergy. Alastair has served in his current role as Archdeacon of Lewisham & Greenwich in the Diocese of Southwark since 2013.

As a young curate Alastair found himself dealing with the traumatic events around the Hillsborough disaster, and – much later on – with the responses around the tragic deaths of Lee Rigby and Sabina Nessa in London – which he describes as experiences that have helped form and shape him. He ran a church-based arts centre for five years in West London.

Alastair is married to Kay, a teacher of children with profound and multiple learning difficulties and special needs, and they have two grown up daughters – Hannah and Laura – as well as a black Labrador called Maia.

Over the past couple of weeks we have been alerted to some fraudulent emails supposedly coming from our Vicar at St. Michaels, Trevor.

This is not a hacking incident, but an individual/group who scan websites for email addresses to try and trick recipients into giving money or vouchers.

The Church Membership List (otherwise known as the Electoral Roll) is “open” every year so that new members can join.

As well as being a very positive step in terms of your commitment to St Michael’s, being on the Electoral Roll entitles you to vote in church elections and so be part of the decision making process of our church.

It is a very simple matter to get on the Electoral Roll; you need to: be over 16 years old; have been baptised; live in the parish or to have been coming St M’s regularly for over 6 months.

Note: if you are already on the E.Roll, you do NOT need to sign a form.

Speak to Jonathan Causer and pick up a form at the back of church, or get the form online here >>

On 1 March 2024, many churches around the UK will be holding a World Day of Prayer Service. This year’s theme is “I beg you, bear with one another in love”. World Day of Prayer is an international, inter-church organisation, led by women, which enables us to hear the thoughts of those women from all parts of the world: their hopes, concerns, and prayers.

This year the Christian Women of Palestine are calling us to connect with the land from where Jesus came; where he was born, ministered and died – and from where our faith began and is rooted.

The Palestinian Christian women who wrote this worship service invite us to pray for peace, justice and freedom of religion and movement, asking us to pray for women, refugees, the sick, dying and grieving.

To come together for this World Day of Prayer in our local area there are 2 services on Friday 1st March:

10:30am – St Nicholas Church, Whetstone Road, SE3 9PZ

8:00pm – Our Lady of Grace, Charlton Road, SE7 7EZ

Please contact Clare Bartram if you need a lift.

We know that our St. Michael’s community is blessed with people who put in the extra effort to help make our daily relationship with God more accessible, and this is definitely shown with our Monthly Prayer Calendar!

Written and curated by our congregation and the PCC, it helps us recentre our hearts and thoughts back to God. However, sometimes our Prayer Calendars have unfortunate encounters with cups of tea, or holey pockets, but do not fear as it has now launched online!

Also a great way to reduce paper waste for any eco resolutions made for 2024, to view our latest Prayer Calendar please click here >>
