In this episode, Terry explains the integral link between diversity and inclusion work and human rights. Using his expertise in human rights and immigration law, Terry elaborates on his work with refugees, asylum seekers and human trafficking victims, busts myths about refugees and national security, and offers insights on how to facilitate change. Trained as a Catholic priest before getting his degree in human rights law, Terry urges us to be better listeners and advocates for historically marginalized and invisible populations.
In this episode, Lara discusses how a student’s social background can influence their college and career choices. She specifically examines the challenges of underrepresentation on racial, ethnic, gender and socioeconomic disparities and how these disparities can impact student success, especially in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields. Lara advocates for looking beyond diversifying STEM fields to create systemic changes that bring equity and inclusion and using culturally responsive teaching methods and mentorship to create a better society. Lara urges that we bring humanity and kindness toward students and self when doing DEI work.
In this episode, Steve discusses the diversity and inclusion of international students and why it is important to incorporate global perspectives into a student’s learning. Steve’s perspectives on diversity, equity and inclusion were shaped by his upbringing in multicultural Canada, his experience as a church volunteer in the southern United States, traveling on projects in South Asia, and working with students from across the world. Steve advocates that a wholesome college experience should include global learning and intercultural experiences at home and abroad.
In this episode, Petra talks about finding her true self as a transwoman, and how her life experience has impacted her views on diversity, equity, and inclusion. Petra’s experience made her realize the need for better urban planning - one that honors minorities of all kinds and recognizes their contributions to building strong communities. Serving in the Peace Corps in Mali helped Petra better understand what it means to stand out as a racial minority and having white privilege. She uses this experience to try to understand the pain of racial minorities in the U.S., especially the discriminations laid upon non-binary individuals with minority racial identities. To become more inclusive in their behavior, Petra urges people to listen and question the way we have been treating minority voices in the U.S.
In this episode, Annie talks about her cultural identity as a black woman, her career in social work, and how they helped her become a leader on equity, diversity, and inclusion. Working with incarcerated women in the U.S. prison system made Annie realize the need for systemic change in our communities. This includes undoing old ways of thinking, celebration of diverse and inclusive spaces for all, and embracing the uncomfortable moments. In order to move in the direction of social justice, Annie believes, we must look beyond the motive and focus on getting the work done.
