In the not-so-distant past, it used to be difficult to find books about correspondence artist Ray Johnson. Most books were either out of print or incredibly expensive. Chuck Welch a.k.a. Crackerjack Kid continues the conversation in Part 02 of his Senders Receive interview!
Crackerjack has spent the last twelve years archiving and organizing his mail art collection, for inclusion at the Smithsonian Museum's Archives of American Art. He has curated mail art exhibitions for various institutions, most recently the show "Postcards to Brattleboro: 40 Years of Mail Art" at the Brattleboro Museum and Art Center in Vermont. For Part 02 of his interview, we discuss what it’s like to open an exhibition on the brink of a pandemic, meeting other mail artists in person, and the effect of the early internet on mail art.

Chuck Welch (a.k.a. The Crackerjack Kid) is author of "Eternal Network: A Mail Art Anthology", one of the earliest and best anthologies of mail art thought and writing. His artistamp and mail art works have long circulated throughout the Network; recent artistamp issues cover topics such as BLM, C19, and political protest.
Crackerjack has spent the last twelve years archiving and organizing his mail art collection, for inclusion at the Smithsonian Museum's Archives of American Art. He has curated mail art exhibitions for various institutions, most recently the show "Postcards to Brattleboro: 40 Years of Mail Art" at the Brattleboro Museum and Art Center in Vermont. He has been the focus of museum shows, notably "Errors, Fakes, and Oddities" and "Mail Art Archives and Correspondences by Chuck Welch" at the New Hampshire Institute of Art Sharon Arts Gallery, in Manchester, NH.

Episode 11: Mitsuko Brooks was born in the Aomori Prefecture of Japan and moved to the United States at an early age. She is a 1.5 generation Shin-Issei Japanese American artist living and working in New York. Her mail art collages, artists books, zines, and assemblages are in special collections and libraries throughout North America, including the Smithsonian's Archive of American Art. Her work often utilizes storytelling or personal narrative while incorporating dense layered visuals or the use of materials others might consider discards. ______________________________________________________________________________

Episode 10: Ken Miller's mail art zine "Shouting at the Postman" (started in 1995) was (and is) a labor of love, focusing on personal stories, mail art anecdotes, and the occasional recipe. Currently, Ken (literally) weaves mail art out of photos and creates collages out of memory.

Episode 05: Sally Wassink (a.k.a Wurlitzerworld) is a multi talented collage, mail, and artistamp maker. Sally's work has been shown in various exhibitions, including the Wereldmuseum's 2017 exhibition "Power Mask". Her collage work recently appeared in the pages of Ukrainian Vogue and has been showcased as the primary cover image for the exhibition catalog for the "Power Mask" exhibition.

Episode 09: Sas Colby is a respected mixed media artist with a history of creating and sending mail art. She has been making, exhibiting and teaching art for more than fifty years, and is well known for her nontraditional artists books. Her artiststamps created through the 80’s and into the 90’s are considered some of the best and earliest examples of the genre.
Sas has exhibited widely across the US and Europe, her work is included in archives such as The National Museum of Women in the Arts, the Jean Brown Archive at the Getty Research Institute, and the Oakland Museum of California.

Episode 08: Barbara Wyeth is a San Francisco artist who has specialized in photography, copier art, and mail art. In the 70's and early 80's, Barbara was a co-owner of the Postcard Palace in San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood, which provided a cultural community center where people could stop by, look around, and become inspired.
The Palace's annual mail art exhibitions are legendary, with contributors such as Carioca, Buster Cleveland, Rocola, and Ruby Ray (among many many others.) Barbara shares these stories and more for episode 08.
