Sermon by Dr. David Rountree on October 09, 2022 at New Covenant Church in Anderson, SC. Scripture Passage: Matthew 12:1-14 Outline: -Works of Necessity (Matt. 12:1-4) -Works of Piety (Matt. 12: 5-7) -Works of Mercy (Matt. 12: 8-14) Sabbath Guidelines: 1. God allows for generous broad definitions of work, rest, mercy, necessity and piety to set apart the Sabbath. 2. Let us be careful to avoid the legalistic approach to the Sabbath. 3. Jesus' healings on Sabbath taught the acceptability of activities which refresh, heal, restore, and strengthen the body and spirit. 4. Let us prefer to be with Jesus, condemned and criticized, rather than with those doing the criticizing and condemning. 5. We must think the best of those who do things differently than us on the Sabbath. 6. There is no advantage to heartless Sabbath rule keeping. 7. The Sabbath day was not designed to hold us captive but rather to allow God to so captivate our hearts that we want time off from our work to spend with him in a special delightful way. The Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath.

The Context of Romans, Galatians and Colossians
Romans 14:5-6:
Galatians 4:9-11:
Colossians 2:16-17: 1. Don’t use the obscure to interpret the plain. 2. Remember the first audience had a Sunday Sabbath. 3. The fourth commandment was never defined as ceremonial. 4. Paul’s writings must maintain consistency.
Rightly interpreting Colossians 2:16
CONCLUDING APPLICATIONS: 1. Sabbath keeping is not disregarded as ceremonial. 2. Neither the Sabbath nor any other day will make you holy. 3. Heb. 10:24-25 rebukes the wrong interpretation of Colossians 2:16. 4. We need to keep Christ’s Sabbath command.

Sermon by Dr. David Rountree on 8/28/22 at New Covenant Church in Anderson, SC
7 Reasons for Observing the Sabbath on Sunday 1. Sunday is the day Jesus chose to meet with his church (Matt.28:1-9; Mark16:2,9; Luke24:1,13-31; John20:1, 11-18, 19, 26). 2. Sunday is the day the apostles of Christ held church (John20:19-26; Acts 20:7). 3. Sunday is the day offerings were collected (1Cor.16:1,2). 4. Sunday is the day for rejoicing in Christ’s resurrection (Psa.118:22-24; Acts 4:8-12). 5. Sunday is the day Christ rejoiced in his new heavens and earth (Isa.65:17,18, 20, 21; 66:1-2, 18-20a, 22-24). 6. Sunday is the day to commemorate final redemption in Christ (Deut.5:15). 7. Sunday Sabbath observance is consistent with fourth commandment language (Exod.20:8-11; 16:23-26; Neh.9:14).
Application: 1. Rejoice that God has continued a Sabbath rest for each of us. 2. Recognize the rationality of the switch to a Sunday Sabbath and be unashamed to join Christ and his church on that day.

Spiritual gifts are particular abilities given to believers in Christ to confirm and build up the body of Christ (1Cor.12:4-7; Rom.1:11).
The term “talent” in scripture is used to denote a unit of weight or money. We use it to refer to a “characteristic feature of a person.”

God’s Old Covenant Cast Off and Rejected (v.1-37)
God’s Covenant Transition Anticipated (v.38-52)
God’s New Covenant in Christ for his People 1. God came to Israel by way of covenant (Gen.17:1-14). 2. The conditional nature of the covenant with the Jews is often repeated (Exod.19:5; Deut.28:45, 46, 62-64; 32:36; Dan.9:4-7; Ps.78:54-61). 3. Israel continues to reject Christ, the mediator of the new covenant. This is not disputed (John 1:11; Luke 19:42-44; Matt.21:43). 4. God declared his rejection/divorce of Israel for their unfaithfulness (Matt.21:43; 8:11-12; Isa.50:1; Jer. 3:8). 5. Jewish ethnicity does not establish heirs of God; only a saving relationship in Christ (Rom.8:15-17). 6. Christ’s new covenant is with his church from the nations (Eph.2:12-22).

He shall return in power to reign Heaven and earth will join to say O praise Him, Alleluia! Then who shall fall on bended knee? All creatures of our God and King O praise Him, O praise Him Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

Scripture Reading: Romans 12:9-21
Song – Jesus Thank You The mystery of the cross I cannot comprehend The agonies of Calvary You the perfect Holy One crushed Your Son Who drank the bitter cup reserved for me
Your blood has washed away my sin, Jesus, thank You The Father’s wrath completely satisfied, Jesus, thank You Once Your enemy now seated at Your table, Jesus, thank You
By Your perfect sacrifice I’ve been brought near Your enemy You’ve made Your friend Pouring out the riches of Your glorious grace Your mercy and Your kindness know no end (To Chorus) Lover of my soul I want to live for You (Repeat 4x) (To Chorus X2)
Song – My Hope Is In You I meet with You and my soul sings out As Your Word throws doubt far away I sing to You and my heart cries holy Hallelujah Father You're near
My hope is in You Lord all the day long I won't be shaken by drought or storm The peace that passes understanding is my song And I sing My hope is in You alone
I wait for You and my soul finds rest In my selfishness You show me grace I worship You and my heart cries glory Hallelujah Father You're here (To Chorus)
I will wait on You You are my refuge (Repeat 4x) (To Chorus X2)

This life I live is not my own for my Redeemer paid the price He took it to be his alone to be his treasure and his prize The things of earth I leave behind to live in worship of my King His is the right to rule my life mine is the joy to live for him
I died to sin upon the cross I'm bound to Jesus in his death The old is gone and now I must rely on him for every breath With every footstep that I tread what mysteries he has in store I cannot know what lies ahead but know that He has gone before There is a voice that pierced the grave a power that rolled the stone away
A sound of life, I know I'm saved the voice of God has called my name So I will rise and in the air behold the glory of the King I will not fear to meet him there I know my life is hid with him

Welcome from David Rountree
Call to Worship: Psalm 100
Song – Oh How Good It Is
Oh how good it is when the family of God Dwells together in spirit in faith and unity Where the bonds of peace of acceptance and love Are the fruit of His presence here among us
So with one voice we'll sing to the Lord And with one heart we'll live out His word Till the whole earth sees the Redeemer has come For He dwells in the presence of His people
Oh how good it is on this journey we share To rejoice with the happy And weep with those who mourn For the weak find strength the afflicted find grace When we offer the blessing of belonging (To Chorus)
Oh how good it is to embrace His command To prefer one another forgive as He forgives When we live as one we all share in the love Of the Son with the Father and the Spirit (To Chorus x2)

Song - Amazing Grace
Amazing grace, how sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me I once was lost but now am found Was blind but now I see
'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear And grace my fears relieved How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed
The Lord has promised good to me His Word my hope secures He will my shield and portion be As long as life endures
When we've been there ten thousand years Bright shining as the sun We've no less days to sing God's praise Than when we first begun
Song – Come Behold the Wondrous Mystery
Come behold the wondrous mystery in the dawning of the King He, the theme of heaven's praises robed in frail humanity In our longing in our darkness now the light of life has come Look to Christ who condescended took on flesh to ransom us
Come behold the wondrous mystery, He, the perfect Son of Man In His living in His suffering never trace nor stain of sin See the true and better Adam come to save the hell -bound man Christ the great and sure fulfillment of the law, in Him we stand
Come behold the wondrous mystery, Christ the Lord upon the tree In the stead of ruined sinners hangs the Lamb in victory See the price of our redemption, see the Father's plan unfold Bringing many sons to glory, grace unmeasured, love untold
Come behold the wondrous mystery, slain by death the God of life But no grave could ever restrain Him, praise the Lord, He is alive What a foretaste of deliverance, how unwavering our hope Christ in power resurrected, as we will be when He comes Sermon: Philippians 4:1-9 – David Rountree

Is God Purposeful in bringing Pandemics?
12 Reasons God Ordains Pain for our lives
1) For advancing the Gospel (Phil. 1:12-20; Acts 8:1-3)
2) For correcting us as members of his church (Heb. 12:5-10)
3) For restraining our sinning (2 Cor.12:7)
4) As a consequence of sin to deter repeat offenses (1 Cor. 11:29-30)
5) To stimulate growth, maturity and perseverance in Christ (James 1:2-4)
6) To test and prove our faithfulness (1 Pet. 1:6-7)
7) To equip us for ministry to sufferers (2 Cor. 1:3-5)
8) To teach us to live by God’s word (Deut. 8:3)
9) To turn us back to God (Heb. 4:15-16)
10) To conform us to Christ’s sufferings (Phil. 3:8-11)
11) To more clearly display God’s works (John 9:1-3)
12) To exalt God-centered worship (Rom.8:28)
Job 1:1, 8; 42:6 Luke 13:1-5; John 9:1-3 Rev. 9:20-21
How do we Respond to Pandemics?
Let us seek God first and foremost! Ps. 46:1; Matt. 6:24-34 2 Chron. 16:12; 32:24 Heb. 4:16
Replace fear with a ministry of love and compassion. Matt. 9:36-38

The purpose of theophanies is to show God’s people that: - He is with them - He is sovereign - He will deliver them - He will lead them
Theophanies ultimately point to Christ

Coming to grips with why God’s law is holy, righteous and good (v.12) 1. It shows us what pleases God. 2. It shows us God character. 3. It shows us church living for unity. 4. It provides freedom to both glorify and enjoy God. 5. It gives us specific ways to speak God’s love language. 6. It gives us the body of instruction necessary for the next generation.

Sermon by Dr. David Rountree on 9/29/19 at New Covenant Church in Anderson, SC.
Scripture Passage: Romans 6:15-23 Outline: Does anyone really know what a slave of righteousness is?
Romans 6:1-14 = free from the power of sin Romans 6:15-23 = free from the practice of sin
Everyone is a slave
Slavery Before conversion to Christ—enslaved to sin (v.16-23)
Slavery After conversion to Christ—enslaved to God (v.16-23)
Benefits of a slave to righteousness (just a few that come to mind): 1. We avoid those things for which we are ashamed (sin). 2. We avoid wasting time. No time serving God is wasted. 3. We bring delight and not burden to our spiritual leaders. 4. We cultivate and experience every fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. 5. We become the delight of the saints of God as those who edify the church, even a blessing to our family and friends. 6. We lay up treasures in heaven for which there is lasting reward. 7. We become qualified with good reputation for all manner of spiritual endeavors both temporal and eternal. 8. We trade all temporary pleasures for those that last, eternal joy and the smile of God. 9. We shine light on the character and glory of Jesus for the world to see. 10. We gain the listening hear of the Master when we pray. 11. We gain a clear and wonderful identity and wholehearted love for God and man.
Considerations for Action 1. Is it possible to be free of sin and still live as if we were enslaved?

Scripture: Romans 1:26-27
The Lie: Rom. 1:26-27
Ways God Describes LGBTQ Living, outside of Romans 1 • Gen. 18:20; 19:4-7, 24, 25 • Lev. 18:22; 20:13 • Jude 7 • Gen. 2:18, 20 • 1 Tim. 1:8-10 • 1 Cor. 6:9-11
What my LGBTQ Friends say: 1. God punished Sodom for inhospitality not homosexuality—Gen. 19:5 2. The “Strange flesh” is not LGBTQ but sex with angels—Jude 7; 2 Peter 2:4-10; Rom. 1:26, 27. 3. The Old Testament laws against same-sex activity in Lev. 18:22 and 20:13 were abrogated with the other ceremonial laws at the time of Christ. 4. The word “natural” in Romans 1:26-27 is subjective.
