Active Ingredient Podcast: Recent Episodes

Sophie Weill

Active Ingredient is a weekly podcast hosted by Sophie Weill where she takes a deep dive into why people do what they do and what it is that drives them. The podcast is a mix of both business stories and soul searching covering people across the board with fancy titles like editors in chiefs, founders and ceos, to under the radar activists who are changing the world one person at a time. The goal is to get to the bottom of how these incredible people discovered their passion, channel their talent consistently and ultimately, how their Active Ingredient is making the world a better place.

This week's interview is with the incredible Maria Marlowe also known as the Acne Nutritionist who is a certified holistic nutritionist and founder of my now go-to probiotic called Glow Biome. Her skin nourishing recipes and insights have been featured in the New York Times, Vogue and so many other outlets. I am just such a fan of Maria's, what she does and creates and how she educates in such a thoughtful way on a topic that most of us (including me) have felt very helpless on.

In this episode we're getting into where acne is coming from, what our skin is trying to tell us/how we can listen to the inner communication going on, the connection between our gut health and our skin health, the pros/cons of medication and most importantly we get into the mindset shifts that we can all gently work towards to move from a place of being at war or at battle with our skin to a more loving, nurturing and patient place to ultimately listen and then act on what we hear.

GIVEAWAY - if this episode resonates with you, post the episode to your stories on Instagram tagging me (@sophieiweill) and Maria (@mariamarlow) and we will be selecting 3 listeners to receive Glow Biome which is the best probiotic for acne prone skin on the market that I have been taking for the past few months.

Today's solo is about taking the next best step towards where you want to go. So often when we're starting to get clear on where we want to be, the overwhelm sets in and paralyzes us to the point of not taking steps so I wanted to put together a little solo talking about the importance of self regulating, taking a breath and committing to the tiniest of steps.

Solo episode on Howard Thurman's incredibly important quote and what makes you come alive. His quote and overall philosophy is truly the backbone of what I'm up to on this show and I just want to continue to bring that to the forefront as much as I possibly can. Hope you enjoy and if you did, it would be so helpful if you could give the show a 5 star rating wherever you listen!

This week's topic is about something that I've been thinking about for over 3 years and that is about the concept of shadow careers - what they are, why we do them and how to start choosing to step into what you ACTUALLY want to be doing vs. a "safer" periphery career. I also get into this week's tennis lesson that reminded me the importance of keeping your eye on the ball and only on the ball!

Please take 2 seconds to give the show 5 stars right here wherever you listen! Click on the show and then quickly give it a 5 star - it helps the show a ton and keeps me going to know that it's resonating with you :)

This week's episode is about the very real fact that there are no coincidences and that if you've recently lost a job, a client, someone in your life, etc. you are making space to bring in something that is more aligned to this version of you. If you stay open enough to see/receive them, the synchronicities/"coincidences" are all around and they're happening for you. If there's one thing I've learned to trust is that when you let go of something that is no longer yours, a) it never was and b) you're making space for what is.

Let me tell you something....there is nothing like being stopped in your tracks by a book you're reading and that is exactly what happened to me while reading James Clear's Atomic Habits. Building your dream life by implementing microchanges and following your joy/curiosity with Amanda Baudier

This week's episode is very Active Ingredient-y in that we talk all about going after the thing you genuinely want in life, how to stay focused and not fall into the "next shiny thing" distractions, following your curiosity and your joy and allowing microchanges to be the thing that carries you through to the next version of you. The guest of this week's show is the amazing Amanda Baudier who is an extremely credentialed and intentional business/executive coach that guides her clients through the lens of spirituality. She began her career in hospitality working for TAO Group where she later became partner and then moved on to be on executive teams to grow Sakara Life and then Melissa Wood Health before taking the leap to start her own executive coaching program, Full Plate Full Cup.

This week's episode is one I am truly so proud of and can honestly say is up there in my favorite episodes released to date. We have Sadaf Siddiqi on the show who is a psychotherapist, creator (I highly recommend the follow by the way) and founder of Being, a digital mental health brand and private practice. In this week's episode we are discussing so many topics that are very top of mind/soul for me like how our relationships evolve when we are committed to personal growth and development, how to grow our tolerance for discomfort, how to allow two conflicting emotions to exist at the same time, understanding the process of self soothing and tangible steps to build your self trust muscle.

If you enjoyed this episode/found it to be valuable, I would really appreciate you giving the show 5 stars wherever you listen (especially on Apple Podcasts or Spotify) as it genuinely helps the show grow and get in front of people who could benefit from these convos. Also, if you have a friend or family member who you think would love - feel free to share it with them too <3

This episode is a deep dive on exactly how I think about brand building in an intentional and aligned way. I'm going over 6 steps to brand building and I do get pretty niche here so it might be good to get a paper and pen for this one to actually write down the answers that come up for you in each of the steps. If you're reading this I want you to know that your brand/product/service (if created from a true/aligned place of course) absolutely deserves to be seen and heard and the world needs to hear it!

This week's episode is with Vanessa Cornell, who is the founder of Nushu, a community healing destination with online offerings, as well as in person gatherings in New York, as well as retreats. This whole platform was born out of Vanessa's own personal disconnection from herself after a lifetime of being a high achiever.

This was such an incredible conversation and I feel like a lot of her story resonated with my own. Those who could fall under the perfectionist or recovering perfectionist camp or have struggled with people pleasing will feel very seen and validated by Vanessa's work. In this episode, we get into the concept of having the capacity to hold two contradicting truths at the same time, unlearning perfectionism, the power of community and being witnessed, the gratitude trap and what that is, the privilege of being able to do the work and the responsibility that comes with it, and having patience with the process while allowing our bodies time to catch up with our minds. This was such an impactful conversation that I hope resonates with our community as much as it did with me.

Scout’s Agency launched in February of 2019 and pioneered the concept of podcast touring with their formula for booking female entrepreneurs as guests on podcasts. I am so grateful to her for her honesty and vulnerability throughout this empowering conversation, and I hope you too find valuable lessons in the wisdom provided through the lens of her experience. We go deep in this episode and discuss her mental health journey, her personal transformation progress and process, starting a successful business, marketing tips for podcasters, and how podcasting is an effective tool to grow your business.

Today, I'm joined by the amazingly talented Hilary Sheinbaum, journalist, content creator, and author of The Dry Challenge, a judgment-free guide on how to "lose the booze" and completely change your relationship with alcohol.

She has contributed to national, regional, and online publications like The New York Times, USA TODAY, Marie Claire, Travel + Leisure, New York Magazine, ELLE.com, and Forbes.com, to name a few. She also had multiple participations as a Lifestyle and Entertainment specialist in Fox & Friends, Inside Edition, The Insider, CBS, NBC, and PIX11.

Throughout our conversation, Hilary talked about what attracted her to journalism, her experiences writing about cocktails and nightlife, and what changed her views on alcohol consumption. We also explore how choosing not to drink can affect personal and, in some cases, professional relationships, how bars and restaurants deal with non-alcoholic options in their menus, the benefits of being consistent in staying sober, and more.

Some Questions I Ask:

This week's episode is about what I believe is a missing element in the PR and Marketing conversation: the inner work creators should go through to create authentic and relatable pieces of content that are really easy to resonate with.

We delve into using self-validation as starting point and guide for the content we put out there, how to feel comfortable choosing delayed gratification, the #1 question you should ask yourself before creating content, and I share a tangible way to teach your brain to rely more on self-validation than on external validation.

In This Episode, You Will Learn:

  • It is possible to tell when a creator is really bought into the idea they are trying to sell (1:52)
  • External growth depends on your inner world (4:14)
  • The #1 question to ask yourself before putting anything out there (6:25)
  • The A, B, C of getting more press (10:01)

We dive into the inspirational example from Jenna Kutcher's book, "How are you, really?" and why I firmly believe the universe rewards sharing tools, resources, and learnings from past experiences.

Clayton Olson joins us today to talk about the relationships we build with others and ourselves and how to navigate personal growth within them.

Clayton is an International Relationship Coach, Author, and Facilitator, with over 15 years of experience enhancing and optimizing human behavior and social dynamics.

Throughout our conversation, we delve into the evolution of Clayton's relationship with himself, which led to developing his coaching career. We explore the effects of growing up in chaotic environments, how it defines our relating style, and how that makes us feel under safe, non-chaotic circumstances.

We analyze the role of triggers in relationships and what they mean in terms of growth. We also touch on the difference between making a sober decision to walk away from a relationship and doing it because we felt triggered.

Clayton also gifted us with golden nuggets on enhancing our relationship with ourselves, and he shared some practical yet powerful tools to do it.

Some Questions I Ask:

How did you land in the relationship space? (2:33)

When your dad passed away, you said that the chaos stopped, everything got still, and you didn't like what you saw. What was coming up for you in that stillness? (6:59)

In relationships, there are so many triggers that clearly are growth opportunities. Still, how do you know the distinction between a relationship to stay in and grow and a relationship not set for growth? (18:16)

In This Episode, You Will Learn:

Clayton shares about his journey and the discoveries he made about himself and his identity (5:11)

Clayton explains how growing up in chaotic environments affects how we create and behave in our relationships (9:03)

What is the best way to react to the pit in the stomach we feel when we find ourselves out of our comfort zone in a relationship (11:28)

Clayton describes how the meta-architecture of our relationships works (16:13)

Clayton talks about getting good at dancing in conflict with our partners (22:23)

Clayton talks about the importance of learning to be at peace with things instead of trying to solve them (33:21)

Before doing something, we tend to pay more attention and get worried about what could go wrong; in most cases, those things are one, totally irrelevant, and two, created by fear.

Although fear's reasons to show up are to protect ourselves, the power of deciding whether doing something might be dangerous or not is ours.

In this episode, we talk about doing the things we want, especially if they are far away from our comfort zone. We explore the reasons why we doubt ourselves before trying something new, unravel the reasons why fear shows up, and we learn how to take the steering wheel of our decisions.

I also share the mantra I tell myself and think about before trying something new and what we can learn from the wonderful feeling of doing something we said we would do.

In This Episode, You Will Learn:

  • About how perfectionism has paralyzed me countless times in the past (2:40)
  • How I felt after doing something new, teaching my first yoga class (5:07)
  • Why we shouldn't let fear decide whether we are doing something or not (8:09)
  • We must focus on ourselves. No one cares about what we are doing (10:11)
  • We are floating on a rock into nothingness. Just do the thing (12:09)
  • About the piece of resting the head on the pillow knowing that we did it (16:41)

The last couple of days have been overwhelming I'm not going to lie; I was surprised by an overwhelming feeling bigger and stronger than my habits, structures, and the systems I have in place to deal with such emotions.

But again, the universe showed up in the form of a mind-blowing book, "The Untethered Soul" by Michael Singer, which taught me exactly what I needed to learn about our thoughts and our relationship with them.

In this episode, I share some of the lessons I got from the book and how they helped me accept, witness, and let pass through me the overwhelm I've been feeling lately, without clinging to either positive or negative thoughts and just trusting the process.

What You'll Learn In This Episode:

  • Relying on our motivation to cope with things is not always the best choice (2:43)
  • Why Michael Singer's book showed up at the right time in my life (7:06)
  • Trust the process. Solutions will come forward (9:19)
  • Allowing the time for our emotions to be there and go through us (12:31)

Today's episode guest is my amazing business coach Ben Easter. He revisits us to talk about the zone of genius, what it is, how finding our own will help us thrive in our lives and our businesses, and what we can do to stay as much as we can in it.

Our conversation revolves around the importance of honing our craft in our zone of genius, the practical ways we can use to discover our zone of genius, and the differences between the zone of excellence and the zone of genius.

Ben also highlights the importance of connecting what we are good at and what we love to do with something financially compensated by the world. We discuss the importance of considering the zone of genius concept when hiring and enrolling people on our teams, how to identify our and other people's abilities, and why we feel less "productive" when performing zone of genius tasks that feel easy to us.

Some Questions I Ask:

  • Can you explain what the zone of genius is? (7:03)
  • How can we get to the point where we remain in our zone of genius and don't get distracted by other activities in our business? (13:11)
  • What are your thoughts on the business model that instills in employees to know every part of the business? (20:14)

In This Episode, You Will Learn:

  • What it means to operate in our zone of genius (8:42)
  • How does our "original setup" affect how we connect with our zone
  • Why do we end up blocking others from operating in their zone of genius when we work out of ours (16:03)
  • Getting paid to learn is a brilliant model in the world (26:59)
  • The differences between the zone of genius and the zone of excellence (34:36)
  • Why is it that when we do "easy tasks" in our zone of genius, we feel we weren't productive, and how to change that mentality (38:25)

In this episode we get into Melanie's relationship with alcohol and why her stomach issues were a big part of the reason she stopped drinking, her career journey, and how all of her past and interests led her to fuse them all together with Ghia, her vision for the non-alcoholic space and why a life with less or no alcohol is a life of PRESENCE.

"You can turn your poison into your purpose." This was one of the many teachings from my yoga teacher training. On March 25th, 2012 I went through what I would consider the hardest day of my anxiety journey (I will never ever forget it). It was the day the poison was the most potent. That day and that experience is what started my yoga journey - I started going to ease the anxiety, to heal myself. On March 25th 2022, exactly 10 years later to the day,  I became a yoga instructor. Not a day before, not a day after. The Universe does not stutter. This is your reminder that you can transform your poison (no matter how big or how small) into your purpose.

In This Episode, You Will Learn:

  • You can turn your pain and your poison into your power (2:49)
  • Everyone's rock bottom is different (4:59)
  • How we can help others once we get to the other side (14:09)

Feeling inadequate, not included, or purposeless usually makes us ask why we are like this or make the choices we make. The problem with asking "why" is an endless path. We'll discover we react in a certain way because we were conditioned to, and then we'll ask why those who conditioned us did it, which will lead to answering another why, and then another, and another.

Instead, we should look at what is not serving us and think of how we could do those things differently.

Today, Ewa Josefsson joins us to shed her inspiring and calming energy, to talk about her own self-discovery journey, and how she allowed her imagination to draw the guidelines of her life. Ewa is a Certified Hypnotherapist Practitioner, Yoga and Meditation Teacher, and Loving Mom.

We delve into Ewa's childhood, her challenging upbringing feeling that something was wrong with her, and the life-changing journalism internship in New York that changed her life. We talk about the power of our imagination, the limiting beliefs we grow up hardwired with, our constant search for safety and pleasure and its consequences, and the pendulum swinging we all go through when we try to change our lives. We also talk about hypnosis, how hypnotherapy works, and the programming of our subconscious minds.

Some Questions I Ask:

  • You have a very soothing, calm energy. Where does that come from? (5:52)
  • Do you remember what you were like as a child? (10:30)
  • Do you feel that therapy is not necessary for personal growth? (17:40)
  • I want to hear from you; what is hypnosis? (37:01)

In This Episode, You Will Learn:

  • About the doors, poetry and writing opened for Ewa (11:53)
  • Asking ourselves why is the worst question we can ask ourselves (16:01)
  • Safety and pleasure: the two motivators of our subconscious mind (18:43)
  • The first time Ewa experienced oneness and how that event changed her life (26:30)
  • How to deal with the negativity bias away (35:35)
  • What is a trance, and how to take someone into a trance (40:42)
  • Why it is possible to love and accept ourselves and still want to change things in our lives (44:44)

Since this thousand miles journey started almost three years ago, I've never stopped learning. The show's concept changed in its essence, and the answer I thought I was looking for evolved. I discovered that the element that pushes us out of bed every morning is active because it is an active search for our truth and also because it is actively working on itself.

Today, we explore the 10 most impactful takeaways I've learned throughout my podcasting experience. We talk about the life-changing skills the show's guests helped me discover, the answers we built together, and how they contributed to resignifying what active ingredient represents. We talk about the power of active listening, the multiple benefits of consistency, silence, gratitude practice, how I discovered that the breadcrumbs are the journey, and more.

In This Episode, You Will Learn:

  • The two reasons why I started this podcast (2:37)
  • The answers are within you (7:23)
  • The multiple benefits of active listening (10:27)
  • The mindset-changing power of practicing gratitude (19:35)

Being an accepted member of a group, also known as belongingness, is a human emotional need. It is also considered a significant source of motivation and one of Maslow's five human needs. However, when the necessity of acceptance intersects with the fear of suffering rejection, it can severely affect our growth and evolution.

In this episode, we talk about what I feel is one of the cornerstones of growth: releasing what others think about us. We explore the "Rebecca Minkoff mindset," how powerful it is to remove our ego from the equation and go after our dreams, and why we shouldn't fear getting a thousand noes before reaching the first yes. We analyze how the need to be accepted impacts our actions, gets in the way between us and our goals and affects our personal and professional growth.

In This Episode, You Will Learn:

  • The only way to grow is releasing what other people think of us (3:48)
  • Nine hundred ninety-nine noes before one yes. How to remove our ego from the equation (6:03)
  • The power of going after what is bigger than us (7:10)
  • People will talk anyway, so why bother? (8:41)

I've realized that consistency is the most potent fuel we can use to propel our self-discovery and personal growth journey. Some time ago, I started asking myself a couple of questions before starting my day, basically to ensure my actions would feel in alignment with my true self.

Throughout the years, I refined that practice into asking myself the three questions that turned into my North Star in my quest of living a fulfilling life.

Today, we delve into the three questions I ask myself to help me set my day, make sure I'm heading in the right direction, and that I stay close to what feels fully aligned with me. We also talk about attracting abundance from practicing gratitude, the power of stacking habits, being grateful and excited for everything that happens in our lives, and how focusing on nourishing our bodies can be used as a motivator.

In This Episode, You Will Learn:

  • The beauty of seeing life unfold through consistency (3:01)
  • The power of being granular when going through the list of what we are grateful for (3:33)
  • Abundance is attracted by gratitude, not by scarcity (7:53)
  • What are the things that make us feel alive today? Why it is crucial to start our day by answering this question (8:53)

After a severe head injury that compromised the parts of the brain responsible for processing language and social interactions, Ben Easter found himself in a tough spot. Like every other human, he strived for connection and belonging, which the consequences of his accident were clearly making more difficult.

Ben devoted his entire being to achieve a fast recovery, and within 6 months, he was already on his feet and, (according to him), fully recovered. But he wasn't; he still had issues processing language, understanding what people would say to him, and the worst part of it, he wasn't aware of these issues; his grandma pointed them out to him. The following months were dark for Ben; he contemplated suicide, he felt isolated, broken, and unworthy.

His studying abilities weren't affected, though, so he started reading about neuroplasticity and learning how to stimulate the brain to "fix itself," he studied and learned about social dynamics. Ben realized social skills were precisely that, skills, and with practice, he would eventually redevelop them, which he did.

Ben Easter, is a Transformational Life Coach and the CEO and Head Coach of Lucid Shift Coaching. He has two Bachelor of Arts degrees from Florida State University. He also has a Master of Science degree in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Chinese Herbology from Colorado School of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

In this episode, we had a fantastic conversation about connection, the need for being noticed, and the importance of belonging. Ben shared his transformational journey, from being a bully to a Relationship Coach. We delve into how crucial it is to face our fears, be comfortable with failure, trust ourselves, and why it is impossible to find peace until we double down our efforts on what we love and think of financial success as a consequence of following our passions.

Some Questions I Ask:

What was Ben Easter like as a kid? (5:53)

I can relate to that feeling of wanting to be seen. Where do you think that stems from for you? (10:38)

I would like to hear about your accident and what happened with your head (15:46)

You said the unlock is finding something that you can get paid for the skills you already have. That doesn't mean the job has to pay you 6, 7, 8 figures. What do you mean by that? (30:58)

In This Episode, You Will Learn:

About Ben's longing for attention and connection since he was a kid (6:28)

Ben's first big breakthrough about who he was and who he wanted to be (9:03)

Ben's second awakening and the start of an entirely new journey (15:51)

Facing our fears. The escalator and the coffee exercise (23:36)

The constant bombarding of edited images of unattainable beauty standards has multiple effects. They set the expectations of what beautiful and desirable bodies look like, especially for women. They push millions of people into absurd and unhealthy diets, and, most importantly, they reinforce the idea that we don't know what's good for us. They mine our intuition, and we develop a limiting belief: we will only succeed with external guidance.

In this episode, we go through a sensitive topic that has taken a big part in my life, proper nourishment. Today's discussion is about what we decide to put into our bodies and why. We delve into the pressure women are set under to look in a certain way and its devastating effects on their mental and physical health, confidence, and instincts.

I share my experiences with the diets I've tried (literally all of them), and what made me realize that path was only taking me away from my intuition and disconnecting me from the needs of my higher self.

In This Episode, You Will Learn:

  • About not remembering a time in my life when I wasn't thinking or worried about my weight (4:17)

We are so used to being constantly entertained that boredom has become almost a bad word or an ancient sensation virtually no one remembers how it felt. We exist in a world where silence is a rarity. We live surrounded by noise, and our society, as a collective, has decided that it is entirely normal to do everything while we consume content.

Today, in this solo episode, I take a moment to talk about silence, my relationship with it, how it helped me, and the growth and evolution I've experienced through it. I explore how I've discovered in silence the most potent tool to get in touch with my higher self, communicate with it, and co-create my life in a way that feels in full alignment with my true self.

Throughout this episode, I share my experiences and results of sitting in silence with my thoughts. I also dive into what I started doing in silence, like going to sleep, running, or even eating, how hard it was (and still is!), and the positive outcomes I harvested from that discomfort.

In This Episode, You Will Learn:

  • About what sitting in silence has done for me and how potent it is to generate true change in our lives (4:03)
  • Why sitting in silence has become one of the hardest things to do in the world we live in (8:05)
  • The difference between decisions made from comparison or ego, and decisions made from being sitting in silence (11:23)
  • About my sleeping habits, and what impact silence has had on the quality of my sleep (13:39)
  • Eating in silence. One of the most challenging yet most beneficial habits I've acquired (20:19)
  • About focusing on the function, not the form, and the perfect type of meditation for us (26:28)

When she was 19 years old, Jenni Kayne already knew she wanted to be a designer and have a lifestyle brand. Growing up in a house that was the center of the neighborhood, constantly receiving guests, and perfectly arranged by her mother's exquisite style certainly helped. I know for me when I first heard of boundaries I thought it meant putting up a wall, closing people off, and being hard to work with or unreasonable when in actuality, it is more about building bridges and getting to a place where everyone’s needs are being met. When working with someone, we are dealing with two different sets of expectations; setting boundaries then becomes more about being flexible enough to make those expectations met than building a barrier between us.

Today’s guest is Karlee Fain, Celebrity Business and Boundary Coach who is both incredibly powerful and one of the most present people I have ever met. She is an Author, Speaker, Founder of The Boundary Academy, and host of the Messy And Magnificent Podcast. Since she was a little child, Karlee had a deep sense of compassion and an urge to make people feel safe.

In this episode, we get into pretty much all of the topics that speak to my soul like getting quiet enough to really listen to your true self, being led by your intuition, and what boundaries are, why we need them, and how to implement them in a way that benefits all. We also talk about how to check with ourselves after we level up, be with ourselves at all times during our growth journey, and how important it is to be flexible sometimes and do the things that make us feel alive.

Karlee also shared some advice to improve confidence, the idea of collective wisdom that runs under The Boundary Academy, the power of seeking connection instead of hiding, and much more.

Some Questions I Ask:

What were you like as a kid? (11:56)

Why did you feel the need to protect your family, siblings, and other people? (13:23)

How do you catch someone when they haven't gotten to that point where they externally feel they need to slow down? (19:18)

What do you say to someone that's in an early boundary phase? (30:38)

In This Episode, You Will Learn:

About the power of curiosity and where it can take us (10:32)

The fantastic feeling of being community-made, and the opportunities it offers (17:33)

The invitation to be called back home to ourselves (22:29)

The woman and the river (30:40)

Leveling up can be lonely (38:47)

We've learned to be different, to be liked, and to ignore what we feel (1:01:19)

I'm half way through the half-marathon training plan and wanted to do a solo episode on what I've learned so far.

  1. you are stronger than you think
  2. prep, recovery, nutrition and sleep are all just as, if not more, important than the run itself
  3. have a fun activity/thing to look forward to post-run
  4. listen to your body and its cues
  5. respect the process - you have untapped capacity

This week's solo episode is all about rejection and perseverance. I'm bringing back one of the most impactful takeaways we've had on the show that was from the episode with Rebecca Minkoff. She shared with us how in the early days of building her brand it was a ton of legwork to get people to take her line and was rejected constantly. Instead of getting emotional she figured out what the math equation would be to get her line into three stores and realized it took 1000 asks in order for that to happen. Moving forward she just saw it as an equation and knew that it would take 1000 asks to be in 3 stores which helped remove the emotion from rejection. Thought this was so valuable and wanted to bring it back!

Alyssa Greenberg is a freelance photographer based in NYC with a focus in lifestyle, fashion and portraiture and has worked with some of the biggest names in brands and entertainment. Back in 2015, after having gone swimming in a lake with her friends, Alyssa's right eye unknowingly became infected with Acanthamoeba Keratitis, a parasite, that resulted in 2 cornea transplants and ultimately completely lost her vision in her right eye which is the eye she used to shoot with. While she says that she wouldn't wish what happened to her on her worst enemy, she is actually grateful it happened to her because it entirely shifted her perspective and view of life for the better. This life changing hurdle only reinforced her deep love of photography and she decided to adapt and persevere. She trained her left eye to be her "shooting eye" and says that losing her vision has actually driven her to become an even better photographer.

On this episode we discuss her background into how she got into photography in the first place, she walks us through her whole process of having lost her vision and how she coped, what she learned about people and how they deal with pain, and her biggest learnings from going through it, we talk about the importance of being truly grateful (specifically for your health), why your passion doesn't necessarily need to be your carer, finding the small things to actually be the biggest victories and getting comfortable with adapting no matter the circumstance.

This week's Active Takeaways episode is my first-ever solo episode and I'm highlighting on one of my favorite takeaways from a past guest that has really changed my life for the better. The takeaway for this episode is to create space in your life to be silent and still with yourself in order to really start listening to your own inner guidance. I know it sounds "woo woo" and I was resistant to it for so long but since I've been actively practicing this, it has made a massive impact on my life for the better. On this episode I go through different areas in my life I have been able to find the silence and create space in the hopes that it can help you find the clarity in your life as well.

Feel free to reach out to me via DM on IG here: https://www.instagram.com/sophieiweill

Episode referenced was with Mayssa Chehata, founder of Behave that was released on November 30, 2020.

Today's episode is with Rachel Liverman the founder of Glowbar, a no fluff facial spa that offers 30 minute customizable facials at $65 dollars. This is Rachel's second time on the podcast and I invited her back because she, like the most of us, has REALLY been tested when it comes to her business. Glowbar had only been open for 9 months before having to shut down due to the pandemic. Her business was entirely closed for 6 months since facials were deemed "phase-less" in New York and still found a way to pivot quickly, work on the foundation of her business and just last week she opened her second location now that facials are finally allowed in NY again and I just knew I had to have her on to talk about resilience and what this experience has taught her.

On this episode I'm talking to her about the rollercoaster that was these 6 months, how she continued to stay so positive, the biggest learnings she's taken during this time, how she rallied her community to get Governor Cuomo's attention when he was ignoring the spa industry as a whole and of course, I ask her if her active ingredient has changed at all since the last time we spoke.

Lily Galef is the Co-Founder and Chief Brand Officer of Hilma, a brand that recently launched that is reimagining our medicine cabinets with natural remedies, that are all backed by science. Think natural and homeopathic alternatives to Advil for example. Prior to starting Hilma, Lily built her career as a creative brand marketer and strategist managing content and partnerships at some really impressive companies like Vogue, Vox and Refinery29. At a certain point in her career, she felt she had to take a step back and really ask herself if the jobs she was going for were for the sake of having a "cool job" or if they were really fulfilling her deeper needs and goals and eventually got comfortable with the fact that having the glamorous job for the sake of having a glamorous job was not cutting it for her. She also had come across a major pain point which was that the health and wellness space was offering alternatives to every area of our life except for our medicine cabinets, which is arguably one of the most important areas we should be paying attention to. She and her co-founders took that insight and ran with it and after two years of research, assembling a world-class team of scientists, and kicking off three clinical studies, they were ready to launch Hilma not too long ago and have already gotten a ton of buzz in the wellness space.
She walks us through how her past jobs have helped set her up for success in leading Hilma in all things brand strategy, the first steps she and her co-founders took to test to see if the concept of Hilma was viable, how they test for efficacy and why being grounded in science has been their biggest differentiator, how the over the counter aisles and supplement aisles are starting to overlap, why spending time alone opens you up to a lot of growth.

Dan Freed is the founder of Formula, the world’s first personalized and completely customizable nootropics company. For those of you who don't know, nootropics are nutrient compounds shown to enhance mental performance in areas such as motivation, creativity, mood, memory, focus, and cognitive processing. FORMULA has amassed the largest dataset on the efficacy of nootropics to date.

Dan dropped out of high school at 16 and says that ever since he can remember he has always struggled with procrastination, staying focused and staying motivated. After dropping out of high school, he went from making sandwiches at Subway to working his way up the culinary industry ladder and ultimately landed at a Michelin star restaurant in France where he first started dabbling with biohacking. He later completely pivoted tracks and with the help of nootropics, decided to go back to school and now has two master's degrees, one from INSEAD and one from Yale, without a college or even high school diploma.

After witnessing his success story, his friends started organically asking Dan to create nootropic formulas for them and he started seeing crazy successes in their lives - his friends were acing their MCATs, getting promoted, and doing amazing at work. More and more people asked for it to the point that he eventually decided to start Formula and the rest is history. Formula has amassed an organic following from very influential names in wellness such as Dr. Mark Hyman and Vanessa Fitzgerald.

It is worth noting that Formula only uses ingredients that are classified by the FDA as generally recognized as safe or have passed through phase 3 clinical trials but nootropics as a category are not a regulated substance so please do your own research before trying. Also worth noting is that nootropics work best when combined with exercise, proper nutrition, and meditation.

On today's episode we get into Dan's career journey and how he got into biohacking, why traditional schooling is not for everyone, what nootropics are and the importance of customizing your dose to your personal brain chemistry, the difference between nootropics and Adderall, navigating an unregulated industry, building trust with consumers and lastly, finding your unique rhythm and way of learning to ultimately build your dream life.

This episode is with returning guest, Liz Tran. As a refresher, Liz is the founder of RESET which up until now has been a physical space in New York that bridges the connection between personal and professional growth where she combines the best of modern, executive career coaching with ancient practices like sound meditation, breath-work, and astrology. Before starting Reset, Liz was a venture capitalist and worked with brands that we all know and love like Instagram, Glossier and Warby parker.

Liz has had to completely pivot her business due to the coronavirus pandemic and has done so with such grace and trust in the universe. She has a physical space in New York -specifically in Nolita which is one of the most expensive areas in the city- that she had to close and her main form of revenue was doing off-site in-person executive training sessions which were also put to a complete halt. Not only has she remained calm and patient throughout all of this, she has adapted quickly and has reframed her mindset in a way that is expanding reset in ways she never thought possible and is optimistic about what this will mean for us all.

On today's episode we are getting specific on how the world is coping with grief, making sure we are giving ourselves time to process, we get into Maslow's hierarchy of needs and how there is an opportunity for all of us to ensure our foundation is solid, how smart brands are reacting in this time of crisis and showing compassion and empathy, how to use this time to think about what your priorities are and if the life you were leading before this pandemic aligns with those priorities and for those listening who have lost jobs or are currently in uncertain or unstable industries, we get into best practices of how to best approach your internal search first.

Sara Panton is the co-founder and CEO of Vitruvi, a premium essential oils company that she started with her brother I am entirely obsessed with. Sara’s interest in scent deepened when she learned about its effect on the limbic system, which is our brain’s emotional centre, in a neurology course while she was studying to get a degree in Global Health with plans to become a doctor. This discovery, layered with her love of culture and natural medicine, sparked a deeper passion for the science of scent, and its potential to help in her busy days. She saw this as an opportunity to make a larger impact than seeing patients 1 on 1 and chose to spread her knowledge of the benefits of scent association by way of Vitruvi where she is delivering essential oils to the masses.

On today's episode we talk about the power of scent association and how the brain loves familiarity and patterns, how essential oils can help get your mind in the right space for whatever task is at hand, the importance of checking in with your ego and really asking yourself why you are doing certain things, making sure that whatever story you're telling yourself is still serving you and the power of daily rituals.

Aliza’s career exploded while she was the SVP of global communications at Donna Karan International where she created and built the voice of the award-winning social personality DKNY PR GIRL which was kept anonymous for years before revealing she was the sassy voice behind the tweets. She organically built a multi-platform community of over 1.5mm followers for DKNY, and was one of - if not the first - marketers to humanize a brand and give it an honest and trusted voice. Thanks to the attention the twitter account received, she landed a book deal and authored the best-selling book, LEAVE YOUR MARK that has been translated into Spanish, Chinese, and Russian and is ranked #5 in Book Authority's "Best Career Development Books of All Time." Let me just say that I read Leave Your Mark right out of college and it was the first-ever career advice book I had ever read and she was one of my very first career role models so you can imagine that this is a very crazy full circle moment for me to be interviewing her on Active Ingredient. Like I honestly can’t believe it. Anyway, Leave Your Mark continues to live on and is now the title of her recently launched podcast, Leave Your Mark the podcast where she brews fresh career advice weekly with some of her most successful and dynamic friends. Aliza has received many accolades but to name a few she has been featured on the cover of The New York Times Style section in the article “Who Will Be America’s Next Top Mentor?” She is a TEDx speaker, a five-time Fashion 2.0 award winner, and been named one of Time's "Six Women Who Rule the Fashion World” and New York DAily News’ list of “Top 50 Most Powerful Women in New York,”
On this episode we talk about her incredible career journey from editorial to public relations to authoring a book, consulting and launching a podcast, we talk about how public relations has drastically changed with the rise of social media and the decline of print, how podcasts are the new media real estate to pay attention to, we talk about the power and importance of humanizing a brand and of course we get into the power of connection and creating meaningful relationships.
