Richard has been spinning in clubs since the 70’s and is still very active and relevant in Miami and NYC. He will not be relegated to just a retro- deejay, but rather a "Classics: DJ... both Past and Future Classics.
These mixes represent the best of dance music from past clubs like The Paradise Garage but also The best of the latest tracks by todays producers.

This podcast is very different than the others I have posted. It is not a continuos mix... it is a compilation of tracks that I have produced or remixed or edited with the help of good friends. I play keyboards and I have matchless gems in my library of vinyl to sample. I do not have great computer skills but have some apptitude with Abelton and Logic. So when a kindred soul drops by to spend a few days with me and they are kind enough to help me with the computer end of it I wind up with stuff that really has a unique sound. This episode is DOWNLOADABLE FOR FREE. But if you care to have an individual track you will find them on Beatport and iTunes. They say that you really can't be recognized as a deejay these days unless you produce records. So this is primarily my effort to be able to say... yes I produce.

It was my 72nd Birthday and many friends asking what are your birthday plans. Where’s the party?
I have always had a public birthday ever since I became a DJ in the mid seventies.
but when I turned 70 I said to myself… these parties take too much out of me, and besides…
I hate the idea of being 70… and besides… there is not one venue in Miami that is worthy of hosting me and my friends
that would be available to us. No integrity in sound equipment , and no integrity in the way they treat deejays.
But this year there was a venue I really wanted to play again. Downstairs at The Astor Hotel. Miami Beach.
Very elegant, an excellent kitchen, a Void Audio sound system with vinyl capability… and great servers and bartenders.
Then my longtime friend JP Rigaud volunteered to do the business of it and helped me promote it.
So it was on… with my favorite Miami deejays pleased to play. Marcello Bentine, Brandon Eldom, JP Riguad, and myself

After having launched it I found that most of my best friends and family were out of town for the long holiday Fourth of July weekend.
And I am wondering if I had made the right decision to do a public party on July 5.
Then there was a reservation of 30 for the sit down dinner. Excellent! I provided a cake from the best cake-maker in Miami… Epicure.
After dinner the dancers started pouring in. My following proved to still be dancers… not sitters. WE made the gurantee and then some. Excellent again!
So after 2 years of pouting about my age… it’s on again for public celebration.
I hope you can make to the next one if you missed it.

When the Paradise Garage opened in 1977, it became — to quote DJ David Depino — the city's first "underground club," and its house DJ, Larry Levan, became a local superstar, mixing, blending and selecting records as no one had before. In advance of Sunday's block party outside the Garage's old Manhattan home and concurrent with a petition to rename that block as Larry Levan Way, Rolling Stone talked at length with three of Levan's alternate DJs — the aforementioned Depino, Joey Llanos and François K — about the impact of the club, the music that was played and memories of friendships with Levan.
You were at the Garage since day one, right David?
David Depino: Yes, since day one. I actually found the space.
Can you tell me about that?
Depino: I was friends with this DJ, Mario, and we worked together in this club in Brooklyn called Broadway. And Mario was Larry's boyfriend. And the first time I met Larry, Mario and I looked a lot alike. So from behind, he thought I was Mario when he came to this club and put his hands over my eyes and went, "Surprise!" And when I turned around he went, "Oh my god, I'm sorry. I thought you were Mario." So we hung out that night, talking. We went out to breakfast after the club closed, and he was talking about looking for a space. I told him I had gone to a club that was only open for a very short time. It was in between Christopher Street and Canal Street when I used to drive home to go to Brooklyn. I don't know exactly where.
So the next time I was in the Village, I weaved up and down the side streets until I found it. And I gave Mario the address to give Larry, and he gave it to Larry, and Larry told Michael Brody, who I didn't know, about the space. They called up the real estate. And then before I know it, Mario told me they took it, Larry and Michael. And Mario was supposed to be the DJ on Friday and Larry was supposed to be the DJ on Saturday. But by the time they started the construction parties and everything, Mario and Larry went their separate ways. And I visited and Larry remembered me, and we started to be friends.
Did the club arrive fully formed?
Depino: The opening night was a disaster 'cause there was the big blizzard and the sound system arrived late. So by the time the sound system was hooked up and they were getting it ready to go, the club was supposed to open midnight. It didn't open till 2 o'clock in the morning. Everyone was on line freezing brutally with mountains of snow, and they we are all so upset that they never came back.
François K: Remember maybe to mention that opening was really much after the unofficial…
Depino: Oh right, they had construct parties for about a year in '76. There were four or five construction parties within a year. Maybe six. And that gave them the money to finish the rest of the club. But when it officially opened in January of '78, it was a disastrous opening, and Saturday took several years to build back up. Fridays were pretty good from the very beginning.
What was being played at this time?
Joey Llanos: I can tell you about the first time I learned about François. I knew about François, but I started paying attention to François because I was working security there. I was an electrician by trade, but I got the job as one of the bouncers and a night that sticks out in my mind was when François was doing the guest appearance at the Garage and he played — it was in the middle of his set, the room was packed, and he put on "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going," that ballad from the Dream Girls, Jennifer Holliday track. And the whole room went insane. So that's when I discovered François. I said, 'Let me pay attention to this guy.' Then I found out he did [French disco band] Martin Circus, and that made me fall in love with him even more. Go ahead François, you wanted to say something?
François K: I clearly, distinctly remember going to one of the construction parties in the fall of 1977. A friend of mine who I was working for at a club called New York, New York brought me there. He was also the guy who quit DJing at the Continental Baths, and just decided he was going home because he had enough of that. And they turned around to the light man, who was a dude named Larry Levan, and they told him to take over with the records. So that guy, Joseph Bonfiglio took me around to a new club that was opening. I remember it being in the back room and that it was pretty much the hottest party I had ever seen, even if it might not have been as fancy as some other clubs or as well put-together because they were still in construction.
It was so strong — the energy was so powerful. It was so immediately obvious that this guy Larry had a whole different kind of energy going on. He had this real charismatic, driving sound that would just captivate people. It's like if you had a bunch of iron forks and spoons and stuff and suddenly you start putting magnets and everything's oriented a different way, that's what Larry could do to a group of people. It was insane. And that music, it was kind of hard to characterize. He could just as well be playing some Fela Kuti and Ginger Baker or he could playing some rock music. Pat Benatar. Even in those early years, he was favoring a great variety of things, some of which he was pretty faithfully carrying on the legacy of an entire generation of musicians, like old people from Philadelphia, like Teddy Pendergrass and the Jones Girls and so on and so forth. Lou Rawls, the O'Jays, and then there was also that funk sound like BT Express.
Joey: If he was upset, you'd hear it in the music. If he was happy, you'd hear it in the music. If he came back from vacation in Brazil, you would hear an hour of Samba music. So you really didn't know, or it would be the Clash or the Police.
When did it feel like a Garage sound really emerged?
Joey: For me, Larry would make the records. Not that he actually made the record himself or produced it, but if it was a record that he liked, he'd play it four or five times throughout the night and make it a Garage record to where they would line up to a local record store, Vinyl Mania, and wait for it. I guess over the 10 years that that sound just became what people expected, you know?
François K: I think the one thing worth noticing is he, Larry, had this ability. Like, let's say a lot of us DJs would be at the record store and picking through all the week's releases and everything. Those releases were whatever they happened to be that week. What was unique was that he really had this way of making that music his. It didn't have to have a specific sound to it; it could be very different things. It could be Italo-disco with a very electronic atmosphere, or it could be something with a real R&B/funk kind of vibe to it. Or it could be something that was very lush and orchestrated, something Ashford & Simpson — like. Or something that was very raw and completely unusual. But whatever it was, he had this way to incorporate that song and he would present it and work it and highlight certain parts of it and sometimes completely change the structure of it with a couple of copies. He would do all that in such a way that he would make the record his.
Often times, after a couple of weeks of a new record — something everyone had heard but no one has bothered with — he was the only one who would pick a certain record and immediately, instantly made it his so from that point on, even that when the record came on, it was just another record.
On the subject of Larry taking it further, I'm interested in the Peech Boys? I found their tracks on compilations, but I can't find any info on how they came together, how Larry brought them together.
David: They were a group named "Snatch"; they were like a rock cover band. My friend, David Lizotta, met Michael de Benedictus one night and brought him to the garage and introduced him to me when he brought him up to the DJ booth, and in turn introduced him to Larry. They started talking and Larry found out he was a keyboard artist and Larry said, "Oh, wow. Do you play this kind of music?" Michael said, "Not really, but I'm loving what you're playing." And Larry was getting ready to do a mix for West End and said, "I need a keyboard player to do some overdubs, " and brought Michael into the studio. Michael did some overdubs and they clicked. And from that, they wanted to make some dance music other than what they did make, which was rock.
That kind of started the relationship and the group later became the Peech Boys and the rest was history. Even François played with them, one time, on drums. In the meat freezer, in Michael's loft, his little studio. That was the first time I realized François could play the drums. I had no rhythm, so they gave me the triangle.
The production on "Don't Make Me Wait," the way the handclaps echo, sounds almost dubby. Like something you'd be into, François.
David: The handclaps were an accident. When they loaded them in, somehow, it went backwards. They were looking for something, and the moment that handclaps came on backwards, Larry jumped up and said, "That's it!" and everybody looked at him like, "What are you talking about? That's a mistake." Larry said, "That's it, that's the hook. People will scream from the first backwards hand-clap."
François K: The thing that was truly uncanny about Larry Levan — all geniuses, all really special artists, have this astounding ability to suck whatever it is around them and bring together all these ideas or influences or trains of thought. And maybe people such as myself were favoring sort of an electronic sort of sound, a lot of stuff like that, which was incorporated into the mixes we did because we had a lot of room to do that, but I think he picked up on that right away.
You said it took a little while for Saturday at the Garage to pick up? When did what Larry was doing there start to influence the rest of New York? When did people start to catch on?
François K: Ten minutes? [laughs]
David: I think Larry's relationship with the Garage was sort of symbiotic — the Garage helped make Larry and Larry helped make the Garage. When both of them started happening, record companies heard what he was doing and he started doing more and more mixes and it became the perfect storm. All three: the mixing, the playing, the club. All of them started to blossom at the same time. Larry started to have an effect on people, but he never wanted to or never tried to. Larry was just Larry. As soon as Larry felt he had responsibility, he hated it because he just wanted to play records and have fun and have his friends around him. I remember one night Stevie Wonder came and Larry made him wait an hour and a half before he played his record. And never went over to say hello to him until he was putting his coat on to leave. I said, "Go over and say hello to him!" and he'd go, "I'm playing — I can't be bothered." I said, "It's Stevie Wonder!" He said, "I know!"
François K: To me, the thing that was really significant is, as Joey was saying before, the first phenomenon you had was a few record stores in the Village that were specifically open early morning — including Sunday morning — after the Garage closed. And that translated into people like Frankie Crocker, the programmer for WBLS, he would come there and suddenly he would pick up on one of these songs. Now you had this radio station in a major market putting on a song that would not be released for three or four months, and putting it into hot rotation, which means it would be played six, seven, eight times a day. Hundreds and hundreds of people mad at this song you couldn't buy.
I remember once, Larry gave Frankie a test-pressing of something and said, "Frankie, this record ain't coming out for another couple of weeks. Please don't play it because the record company already told me." And Frankie said, "Oh, no, I'll wait a couple weeks." The very next day, he played it. We were in my car and Larry put his hand on his head and said, "I'm in so much trouble."
David: And Frankie would say, "I heard this last night at the Garage."
François K: It had this effect on culture. This was something that was truly a phenomenon. There was nothing you could compare it to. It was this wildfire, powder-keg effect, and we saw it happen in front of our eyes. That's what Larry Levan did. It just spread out not just in the city, but on to England and the rest of the country.

If you are wondering what is this strange but beautiful visual… it is a depiction of a
strange ritual once was key to the spiritual path of our Western culture.
The symbol of it still is key to it's atonement narrative.
The title track here is “Rising” We often say house music is a Spiritual” thing. I feel that it is. So we are speaking here of rising.
There was a tribe wandering in the desert 5000 years ago. They gave us a book that is still today the most read book.
It tells of a realization amongst them of the folly of giving human sacrifices of their children and instead giving sacrifices
of animals. The naive tribes surrounding them thought that if they sacrificed a young child or even a prince at their altars
they would be given favor by the Gods. This wandering tribe realized the folly of human sacrifice and turned from this darkness
towards a more enlightened sacrifice. This sacrifice was thought to be “Rising” up to the heavens as a sweet smell of
love to their ONE true god. Pictured here is the tented tabernacle and the altar where their priests gave up such sacrifices
in the open place to be seen by all peoples. Behind that was The Holy Place and behind that The Holy of Holies.

The first official Def Mix Tribute to Frankie Knuckles was at The Vagabond, Miami FL. It was recorded in a seven and a half hour set featuring David Morales with son Brandon Morales and an opening set by Richard Vasquez. The evening was so charged with emotion it just seemed like the dance floor was floating its way right up to the heavens. Every track and mix was inspired by the unmatchable talents of Frankie Knuckles. I felt so honored to be asked to do the opening by both David Morales and Carmel Ophir, owner of The Vagabond. And when I accepted I did not tell them that I was sick as a dog with the “Plague” that was the aftermath of the Winter Music Conference. I have never demanded antibiotics for flu. But this time I described to my doctor how important this was to me and demanded that he give me whatever antibiotics that would make me functional on that night. One would hardly believe that Frankie and David with the Def Mix family had been there several days before for the WMC Def Mix party which was the hottest ticket of the week… never imagining that Frankie was not to return to us.
Being one of the pioneers of house music in the eighties, naturally I knew Frankie early on. When he came to spin as a resident at my club The Choice I could scarcely believe that he was actually in my house working that all analogue sound system on a Friday night. Later I got to hear him spin regularly at SoundFactory… then SoundFactory Bar and then RedZone. We both lived in the neighborhood known as The Lower East Side. He a few doors away from Dance Tracks record store. I lived one block away on Second Street… and The Choice was three blocks east of us on 3rd Street. We formed a strong brotherly bond when we were talking about our upbringing and found that we both attended the same church in the seventies. A church that had the best choir in Manhattan... Faith Temple Church of God in Christ up on Sugar Hill in Harlem. the minister of music was Professor Herman Stevens. I got my style of playing the Hammond organ from Professor Stevens. The spirit of C.O.G.I.C was all up in Frankie’s music and is best demonstrated in his classic “The Pressure”
Please excuse my two tripped up mixes… it was a miracle that I was actually on my feet that night.

There are thousands of people still here who wished that it could last forever. The Paradise Garage 84 King Street.
Then there are many more who swear they were there… though way to young to have been there. lol.
Then there are those who are working to make it last forever to leave a lasting legacy for all those who absolutely love great dance music. I am finding more an more these days a young generation who know who Larry Levan is even if they never heard of The Garage and many who have heard of The Garage. This summer 2014 a block party in front of the building which housed The Paradise Garage is being sponsored by The Red Bull Academy... to finalize the campaign to rename this street Larry Levan Way... in honor of the greatest deejay ever. 28 years after it's closing Garageheads look back and realize... we knew how special the Garage was even then, but now 28 years later we realize there has never been anything like the Garage since. How blessed we were to have lived those moments.

This mix is the Fourth in a series of live vinyl mixes representing what was played at The Saint., NYC. in the years 1980-1986. It was located on Second Avenue and 6 Street in The East Village. just 5 blocks from my infamous townhouse. The Saint had it's unique sound whose private memeberships were white gay males. I remember the attire being 80% faded tight Levis, white T- shirt and a mustache. We who were not into that look called them clones. Although I never performed there I did collect the music that was featured there… and that music was very unique from the other clubs of those years. It's main DJ's were Robbie Leslie, Roy Thode, Michael Cavalone, Michael Fierman among others… but the ones I have listed here were my favorites of them. It was a remarkable place architecturally but it did not have an outstanding sound system. It was severely lacking in in the bass range… but evidently that is the way they liked it. There was very little funk in the music so it really didn't need much bass. The light show really was outstanding and was projected onto a perforated planetarium dome. Richard Tucker was main light man. I have begun this collection with what was termed after hours early morning 'sleaze" music.
"Back in the day, when variable-speed turntables were a relatively new invention, DJs very much wanted to create the perfect mix. Matching beats were only part of that. The most ambitious DJs, particularly those who played night after night until 4 a.m. -- or in the case of many private membership clubs, several hours after the sun came up -- aimed to take their dancers on a journey that mirrored nature's own peaks and ebbs. Typically, the energy and tempos and intensity of the music would build and build until sometime in the early morning hours, when they'd all ever so gradually recede.
To accomplish the downshift, DJs would bring out what's often called "morning music" or its typically slower subset, "sleaze," which is usually sexy but only rarely actually sleazy. To the contrary, morning music and sleaze remained sophisticated throughout the '80s and even into the '90s, while dance music generally got simpler and harder. To construct morning music and sleaze sets, DJs drew from mid-tempo soul, New Wave, European pop, some easy listening, a little touch of jazz, and other forms of gentle disco. Together, these warm and caressing tracks would ease dancers down from their drugs, but leave them elated and ready to take somebody home.
Reacting against the relentlessly fast and banging beats of today's EDM, a new generation of DJs like Lindstrøm and the Horse Meat Disco crew are rediscovering these early morning evergreens. A few are known to nearly everybody, but far more remain primarily known to the surviving club-goers and DJs of dance shrines like New York's 12 West, Paradise Garage, The Trocadero Transfer, and the Saint." --Barry Walters adventuresome.
The Saint Structure, First Floor - entrance floor in industrial high tech modular metal. Second floor perfectly round hard -wood blonde dance floor with planetarium dome and Dj booth. Third floor above the dome for the adventuresome. I can't describe it since I never went up there.

it certainly seems like the Lies are completely taking over.
I had a friend who I loved intensely because he was the most fun person I have ever spent time with.
I looked forward to every weekend with him. I felt like a little boy again. One day I said to him… how come you lie about everything.
You are a habitual liar. It seems to be your natural narrative. He said… I lie because it is a lot more fun than telling the truth.
I had to admit he was a master at creating fun. A very sweet nice person…his lies were usually not malicious,
but they were definitely mischievous.
In the 50’s growing up as a teen in America there was so much more honesty.
I can’t recall my parents ever lying to me… and I recall getting my mouth washed out with
Ivory soap many a time. Today I see most of my friends lying to their children as if it were nothing.
Whatever will make the problem go away… they will say it.
The teachers are lying… the preachers are lying, the politicians are lying… the judges are lying…
and it is a given that all the lawyers are lying. Every lawyer I have had as tenants
have been deceitful and lying with out shame in their dealings with me…
cheating me out of thousands of dollars. I often ask my self does it really make any sense today to
try and live honestly. People want you to tell them lies they really do.
People want you to tell them what they want to hear… and you are the loser if you don’t.
I don’t remember it being this way 50 years ago.
How did this happen so quickly.
In entertainment real is not very popular… it is boring to most.
People like entertainment to be dramatic and fantastic.
The dance music in this mix is The Truth. It is very good real music…that is except for the last two selections.
They are there to remind us that we learn to enjoy music that is not really music…
just because someone put a lot of time and money into hyping it.

The photo is Barry Perry at The Choice NYC circa 1989. Possibly carrying a Choice Lovely to the dancefloor. Barry was the doorman at the Choice... His warm greetings to all who were welcome at The Choice were unmatched by any other doorgod and was probably the main reason why so many made the Choice their choice for the evening. His rationale for VIP... great dancers come in first and usually for free... and I always reinforced that too.

Save The Robots was an after hours club, located at Avenue B and 3 Street, in the East Vilage, New York City in the Eighties and into the Nineties. There was never anything like it then and has never been anything like it since.It's interior was painted by Dom Blonde. Its floors were made of beach sand.
"Robots" was frequented by drag performers, musicians, club kids, employees of other bars and clubs, skinheads and other denizens of downtown New York nightlife,
You will have to go to the FB page to get an idea of why it was so special. But to put it in a nutshell... it was a place where you could go and find people with great personalities of creativity and originality.
The door policy was the most selective of any… and that too I would not be able to define. It was just super interesting. I considered myself privileged every time I made it past the doorgodz.
My club The Choice was on the same block. People would go back and forth between the two clubs. Both underground clubs had their distinct flavor of music and club celebrities. I had an opportunity to DJ there several times, and Denis Pruvot owner of STR would often visit The Choice to relax and socialize. Since The Choice served no alcohol … drinkers would run over to STR for it’s speak easy. When STR closed at 8am many would continue their weekend at The Choice until noon.
This mix in no way represents the wide breadth of STR music… but I think it does represent the core of what was underground in the early eighties. We called it Dance Oriented Rock, or Post Punk and New Wave.

From when it opened in January 1977, to its last party in the Autumn of 1987, the Paradise Garage was the clubbing focal point of New York. A place where dance artists like D-Train and Loleatta Holloway would come to perform. And the place where people like Mick Jagger, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Grace Jones and Keith Haring would all hang out. It was the testing ground for labels like West-End and Salsoul, and producers like Francois Kevorkian and Levan himself. It was all these things, and much, much more. For the 2,000 regulars, Larry Levan was like a God. They even tagged his late-night sessions ‘Saturday Mass’. He did things with records that other DJs just didn’t do. He would tell a story with his music. Sometimes sending the crowd crazy, and minutes later, making them break down and cry. There was, and still is, no DJ like him. He was an insanely talented genius, both behind the turntables and in the studio. And he made the Paradise Garage the legend that it is.
“He was the inspiration for all the important DJs in New York today,” says Mel Cheren, owner of disco-giant West End Records and executor of Levan’s estate. “People like Junior Vasquez, Frankie Knuckles and David Morales became DJs because of Larry.” Judy Weinstein, director of Knuckles and Morales’ Def mix organization agrees: “He was brilliant. A true genius. He was, and still is, the best.” And, as for why, six years after his death, Levan and the Garage are still placed at the pinacle of the clubbing world, fellow disco producer and regular guest DJ at the Garage, Francois Kevorkian, says this: “The reason why it is so important is because everyone and their mothers were there every week-end checking it out. It was so obviously and blatantly superior to anything else going on. You had the best sound system around, the most talented DJ you can imagine with amazing records that no-one else could get. Things he’d made himself and things others had made exclusively for him.”
And yet it was more than just that. Levan was obsessed with perfection. He would spend hours re-arranging the speakers in the club until the sound was absolutely perfect. Then change it all again the next week so that the crowd didn’t get bored. “He was a technical wizard,” explains Weinstein, who got to know Levan working at Dave Mancuso’s NY Record Pool. “He could re-build a radio from scratch. He helped Richard Long create the Garage sound system. Larry would tell Richard what he wanted and if Richard told him that they couldn’t do it, he would keep on at it until it was invented for him. Larry would always find a way to make things happen.”
David DePino, Levan’s best friend and the DJ who used to warm up for him, remembers his perfectionism on a different level: “He never wanted it to become stale, he never wanted it to become regular. He always said, “The people won’t come. They’ve gotta know that it’ll be different.’ And they did. People never came into a stale place. I’ve seen nights where everyone was rushing around to get things open and they’d forget something like cleaning the mirror-balls. It’d be one o’clock and Larry would run on to the dance floor with a ladder to clean all six mirror-balls. The record would run out and everyone would be standing there waiting. Not booing, nothing mad, just waiting. And when he finished, he’d go up and put the next record on and people would go mad. They loved that. The fact that even though he was the DJ, he’d spend half an hour cleaning all the mirror-balls.”
He produced his music with a similar passion. There were times he would be in the studio week after week as he tested new versions of songs on the Garage crowd. Some records took over a year to complete.
His passion for DJ-ing lead him to play on three turntables working studio effects and his own special edits into the mix. He invented the now commonplace trick of a capella mixing. The presentation of the music and the pure entertainment of his crowd was paramount. He would use video clips on the huge screen above the dance floor to accentuate certain records and, as the night wore on, he would upgrade the turntables to ones with state-of-the-art needles for the ultimate aural experience on the floor.
Communication with the dance floor was his motivation. His message was one of love, hope, freedom and universal brotherhood. And the set of songs he played was the dialogue he used. He’d even leave gaps between certain parts of the journey. So if he played three songs in a row about music, and the next one was about freedom, he’d leave a short pause or drop in an effect.
“He built sets with stories that went into one another,” explains Kevorkian. “I’m not saying that he only played vocals, but there was a concept there was a concept that he studied and became an amazing practitioner of. He was able to truly use songs, and when I say songs, I mean songs. I’m talking about songs with a voice speaking to you and inspiring you, not some crappy sample repeating 175 times until you’re made to feel like you’re very stupid because it has to be repeated that many times until you understand it. Songs with lyrics. And he used those lyrics to talk to people. It was very, very common for people on the dance floor to feel like he was talking to them directly through the record. And it was a two way thing. Not just the DJ saying, ‘Here is the law,’ or the crowd saying, ‘We’ll only listen to this,’ there was an unspoken mental energy flowing back and forth. I think, more than anyone else I’ve known, he was the one that could pick this up more than anyone else.”
That ability to talk to the dance floor is one of the main reasons why Levan is still revered today. He created something so special between the hours of midnight on a Saturday night and whenever the club closed on Sunday afternoon, that the crowd came back religiously, week after week, for more.
“You had 1000-1200 people actually on that dance floor communing together,” continues Kevorkian. “Sharing their energies together to the music. Singing the lyrics and ad-libbing on top of the music. Today I see 1200 people on the dance floor each in their own little mental head-space. Isolated from each other most of the time. Sometimes clubs get off a little, but not at the level of the Garage. And if you haven’t seen it, I’m sorry to say, but you can’t understand it. It’s like telling me you’ve seen a bicycle ride and I’ve seen race-cars and rockets. It’s a whole different thing.”
“If there were 2,000 people in there every Saturday,” adds Depino, “a good thousand of them knew each other by name. And it was the same, year after year.”
The one thing, however, that really made Levan different from DJs today was that people actually loved him. Not just the hero figure. They loved Levan the person. They loved the fact that he would stop the music and spend half an hour cleaning the mirror-balls. They loved the fact that on membership days, when Michael Brody, the owner, would hold interviews for those wishing to join the club, Levan would open the back door, let the huge queue of hopefuls into the club and start playing the biggest records of the week (much to Brody’s annoyance). They loved the fact that he would put on a record, then run straight down to the dance floor and join in the party. They loved it when he hooked up his radio the sound system and played the Garage mix show on WBLS back to the crowd. They loved the fact that his passion for the party was completely all-consuming and that sometimes, he was just plain crazy. --Lee Lewis

I just love the title track for the mix this week. Who is the One? The DJ is THe One. I think this track had me in mind when it was written. lol. Well maybe you too? What is this DJ worship thing. It is ridiculous! All we do is play records CDs and now just laptops. What is the big deal. How did they tuen us into rock stars. What sort of non-sense would make Paris Hilton want to be a deejay.
It is because. it is the most fun in the whole world if you love music and you love people. This non-sense has got to stop. lol

This mix is the second in a series of live vinyl mixes representing what was played at The Saint., NYC. in the years 1980-1986. It was located on Second Avenue and 6 Street in The East Village. The Saint had it's unique sound whose private memeberships were white gay males. I remember the attire being 80% faded tight Levis, white T- shirt and a mustache. We who were not into that look called them clones. Although I never performed there I did collect the music that was featured there… and that music was very unique from the other clubs of those years. It's main DJ's were Robbie Leslie, Roy Thode, Michael Cavalone, Michael Fierman among others… but the ones I have listed here were my favorites of them. It was a remarkable place architecturally but it did not have an outstanding sound system. It was severely lacking in in the bass range… but evidently that is the way they liked it. There was very little funk in the music so it really didn't need much bass. The light show really was outstanding and was projected onto a perforated planetarium dome. Richard Tucker was main light man. I have begun this collection with what was termed after hours early morning 'sleaze" music.
"Back in the day, when variable-speed turntables were a relatively new invention, DJs very much wanted to create the perfect mix. Matching beats were only part of that. The most ambitious DJs, particularly those who played night after night until 4 a.m. -- or in the case of many private membership clubs, several hours after the sun came up -- aimed to take their dancers on a journey that mirrored nature's own peaks and ebbs. Typically, the energy and tempos and intensity of the music would build and build until sometime in the early morning hours, when they'd all ever so gradually recede.
To accomplish the downshift, DJs would bring out what's often called "morning music" or its typically slower subset, "sleaze," which is usually sexy but only rarely actually sleazy. To the contrary, morning music and sleaze remained sophisticated throughout the '80s and even into the '90s, while dance music generally got simpler and harder. To construct morning music and sleaze sets, DJs drew from mid-tempo soul, New Wave, European pop, some easy listening, a little touch of jazz, and other forms of gentle disco. Together, these warm and caressing tracks would ease dancers down from their drugs, but leave them elated and ready to take somebody home.
Reacting against the relentlessly fast and banging beats of today's EDM, a new generation of DJs like Lindstrøm and the Horse Meat Disco crew are rediscovering these early morning evergreens. A few are known to nearly everybody, but far more remain primarily known to the surviving club-goers and DJs of dance shrines like New York's 12 West, Paradise Garage, The Trocadero Transfer, and the Saint." --Barry Walters

In 1977, Studio 54 was transformed into a nightclub by Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager, with Jack Dushey as a financial backer. They operated the company as Broadway Catering Corp. It took only six weeks to transform the theater into a nightclub and cost $400,000.[11]
Rubell and Schrager hired Ron Doud as interior designer and Brian Thompson as lighting designer. Jules Fisher and Paul Marantz, two well-known Broadway theatrical set-designers, helped convert the theater into a dance floor and created moveable, theatrical sets and lights using the original theatrical fly rails, which allowed for a constantly changing environment.
Within a month of opening, the New York State Liquor Authority raided Studio 54 for selling liquor without a license, and closed it. The owners of the nightclub said the incident was a "misunderstanding". The next night the club reopened, serving fruit juice and soda instead of liquor. Prior to the raid, the nightclub had been using daily "caterers' permits", which enabled the nightclub to serve alcohol but were intended for weddings or political events.[12] The State had denied the daily permit for the night and raided the nightclub. The nightclub had been using these permits while waiting for its liquor license to be processed.
