*okay i’m a few days late on this but i have good reasons. on saturday i went estate saleing and took a nap (it was so hot!) and watched a bunch of steven universe and then went to see barbie. and then on sunday i did food not bombs and took a long nap again and watched more steven universe and then finally got back out of the house after like 7:30 once it cooled off a bit and just hung out on the food co-op patio. very important thing to do. and then it was hard to find a chance to do it yesterday because i worked most of the day and then cooked dinner for like the first time in a while and then i had to watch wall-e for the first time. can’t believe i never saw it.

i’ve been in my summer home for a week. it’s cool, it’s just quiet. i’ve gotten so used to a crowded house. but maybe it makes sense to hibernate a bit during the summers here. lay low. ride around sometimes after the sun goes down. and during the day you keep the blinds drawn to keep the cool in. maybe in that darkness i could try making my own sounds, practice drawing, etc. i hope the quietude allows for some creative moments that just didn’t have a chance against the constant activity in the old house. i wouldn’t trade the past year at all, but i could perhaps work towards more of a balance moving forward.

*i’m moving in the next month and it maybe hasn’t totally hit. as in, i’m not panicking yet. but i’m going to slowly move all my stuff back into storage for the summer and live without all my junk until around mid-september. i may spend this weekend packing up a lot of non-essentials. craft supplies, books, vhs tapes. don’t tell my vhs tapes that i called them non-essential! they would be so bummed. but i have to start somewhere. i’ll keep a few tapes behind that i’d like to watch with people before we move. i’ll move the bigger tube tv into storage but i’ll keep my tiny 9" tv/vcr combo. i’ll move the cassette tapes. i’ve already packed up my sweaters and jackets for davis summer. my long pants and long sleeve shirts too. will store the keyboards but i’ll bring them back out in fall to try my keyboard square project again. extra shoes and camcorders will go. for whatever reason i’ve so many collected bags, so i’ll throw them all into one giant bag and store those too.
i have so many ideas for projects that i may never get to, but i lug this stuff around from place to place regardless. i’m not saying it isn’t worth it. i love having these things around because it keeps me working towards something. keeps my imagination running. but i wonder what it would be like without it all. what else could i be getting into that didn’t require so much physical stuff?*

i went to an estate sale last weekend and i bought two jars of rubber bands. one had red rubber bands. the other had green rubber bands. they were so neatly organized. so pleasing to look at. someone, and presumely this person is now dead, took the care to organize these jars of rubber bands and i knew immediately that i had to have them. it was sunday and in the last hour of the estate sale. everything was cheap and whatever was left over was probably destined for the landfill. is it my job to save all the treasurers of the recently deceased? no. but maybe. and i’ve saved other objects before. notebooks. homemade fridge magnets. odd collections of useless items. at least, the items are useless to me, but they were meaningful to someone. and that’s what draws me to them. i hope that some day someone decides that my trash is worth preserving. and in that trash, i will live forever.

*my mom gets so sad when she sees holes in my clothes. i have these favorite boots, and they both have holes in a spot where it makes sense for them to wear out with regular use but the rest of the shoe still works fine i think. but mom gets so bummed when she sees them. she’s like “what did i do to deserve this?” and “oh god, what did i do wrong?” even though i’m like a pretty okay person and do some cool things in this world, and my shoes have nothing to do with her. is this just a common mom reaction? or like, an immigrant parent thing?
i did a lot of research the past couple months and got a nice new backpack because my backpack was also one of the items that made my mom sad. and yah, i agree that it was disgusting, but it still worked fine. but i showed my mom my new backpack tonight and she was so happy. i’ve been looking forward to showing it to her. and i’m going to try really hard to keep it nice, though often life happens so no guarantees. mom loved the backpack but told me i still better not wear the shoes with holes next time i see her hahaha.
i’m 37 and i wonder about if/when any of this will change with age. like, at some point will i start caring about whether my clothes have holes in them? would it have happened already if it was going to? or, will my mom stop caring about whether my clothes have holes in them? generally i don’t understand how age works and what if i never have kids of my own? will i just be treated like a child forever? or, for those of you with kids, do your parents still infantilize you anyway? obviously all parent-child relationships look different, but i just don’t feel like i have any reference points.
mom, i know you see these posts and i love you and i know that we share many of the same values. and i don’t want to ever make you sad. and i will try to remember to wear a costume if you need me to but i will also continue to challenge you because i think that, too, can mean love.*

i hate the way wearing a mask makes an indentation in my beard. and then my beard looks weird until i shower and brush it out. and so sometimes i’ve not been wearing a mask indoors. like, when i know i’m going to be inside the store for a short time i just go without. but i’ve been thinking about how dumb that is. the vanity part. but like, being vain about something that i’m sure other people find gross hahaha. it doesn’t make sense. so i’ve been thinking about trimming my beard and keeping it trimmed. this probably seems trivial to you, but it feels like a big decision to me. i’ve had a full natural for like 18 years. that’s half my life. but if it’s causing me to take risks, then maybe it’s worth a trim?

*i went to a book sale today and i judged all the books by their covers. or more specifically, their spines. i chose the books based on the lettering on their spines and i guess we’ll see how it goes! but wow, ugh, some book covers are so ugly. i’m just hoping that if i’m drawn to the aesthetic of the cover art then i may be drawn to the content or style of writing?
i judge people based on their aesthetics also (it’s a shortcut we all take, yah?) but it gets confusing because of places like urban outfitters and also because some of my favorite people have truly upsetting fashion sense.
but like books, and people, i love a good recommendation. that way i don’t have to make time-saving judgements based on aesthetics. so what/who would you recommend to me?*

*it’s been a few months since i broke up with my therapist and i’ve been doing pretty well. really well, actually. there are some things that it would be nice if they were going a little differently but none of them are high anxiety situations. everything has been manageable. i’ve been able to check in with people when i have something to think through. i don’t feel like i’m holding too much in - just enough. i’m not feeling too stressed. my days are full and i’m having a nice time.
i’m not sure how to account for it all. like, i want an explination. why. but maybe that’s all it is. i ride this moment and if things change i adjust. and that will be fine.

*before typing this out i sat for a whole five minutes in total silence. it was an accident. i didn’t mean to do it. but i’m realizing i don’t do that enough these days. and that maybe i should do it for longer sometimes. i’m in my bedroom and no one else is home right now. i can hear some quiet bird sounds from outside. i know the highway is only a few hundred feet away but i can’t hear it. there’s a low hum from something. probably the fan in the bathroom? the half bath doesn’t have a window so keeping the fan on in there helps keep it from getting too stuffy. the refrigerator makes sound but it’s mostly easy to tune out. i wonder if my lamp is making a sound right now. i just heard a motorcycle for a second. and now it’s gone.
the heater just came on. in 15 seconds the fan will kick in and in another 20 second it’ll reach my bedroom. sound waves move through air. the heat moves through air to my body. i baste in it so my fingers can defrost and so i can finish this message to you. and then i’ll silence my fingers for five minutes.*

it’s almost porch stoop sidewalk season again. i remember sometimes i would walk down the sidewalk in isla vista and run into someone i know and stop to talk for 15 minutes and then you cross the street and run into someone else and you talk and that happens over and over again on the nice days. you could never really get to where you’re going. and i loved it. there are some spots around davis that also feel like that. and now that i know more people here i look forward to never getting to where i’m going.

*your stories are a gift. your time is a gift. your attention is a gift. and when you share generously with others it can feel like you’re making a connection. but over time, if there isn’t reciprocity, it can start to feel bad and you realize how one sided it’s been. i don’t think that every action requires a response in kind, and we don’t give gifts expecting a return, but when you receive very little it’s hard to keep trying.
i’m thinking about where i want to put my energy. and i’m not yet sure how to make that decision, but my energy is limited. and although i feel pulled strongly towards new connections and excited about exploring possibilities, i also want to be better at celebrating my existing connections. particularly the ones that make the effort. and in the same way that i don’t expect every connection i investigate to be mutual, i shouldn’t respond just to respond. i could simply prioritize the ones that i know already feel good and save some energy to continue exploring others.
i’m writing this here, and i’m going to try, but damn that allure of potential. perhaps it’s not so simple.*

**i’ve been thinking a lot about storytelling. i feel like i’ve been telling stories in one form or another forever. i mean, we all do. we play make-believe as kids but i do the exact same thing now. maybe we just call it “banter” or something instead. but we riff off each other and create worlds and fantasy. i think that’s so fun, and when you find someone you immediately banter with well, it’s just such a cool connection. or we run through scenarios in our heads but we call it “anxiety” and typically keep these stories to ourselves.
so many things to share about storytelling but one thing i think is so interesting is that i think my interest in telling stories has been strengthened and nurtured in therapy. when you talk to your therapist you are telling them your story. and if you’re doing it like me, every small story comes with additional context and tangents and reflection and that’s even before i give them a chance to respond. and then further reflecting on particular moments and themes allows me to connect them to other moments and themes and all of a sudden you find yourself trapped in this spider web of a life story. actually, no - i’m the spider, and i’m not trapped at all. i bounce around carefully from thread to thread, weaving new lines, rewriting old memories, eating flies.
and then every time you transition to a new therapist it’s a chance to tell your entire story over again. and you’re so excited about that part of it. maybe too earnest. you weave more bits and pieces of story together and each time you think you have a better understanding of who and why you are. sometimes i’m concerned that i’m overconfident in the work that i’ve done and my ability to communicate it. i’m wondering about the performance of it all. is the story i tell about me actually me right now or a me i aspire to? can it be both? believing that someday i could write a memoir seems laughable but i want to. would you read it? it’ll be so embarrassing but it feels necessary to share it all.
i’m just a few weeks into a break from formal therapy right now, but i’m still storytelling. recently it’s been with friends. in the actual real friend world. which i’m enjoying. and opening up in these spaces feels like it means something totally different than it had in therapy. i’m grateful to therapy for helping me explore my own stories but right now i’m more excited about connections and mashups and crossover episodes with friends. excited about friend stories colliding with my own and for the impact to be meaningful for them and for me.**

*i haven’t been making it to shows so much recently. i regularly check the listings and add the ones i’m interested in to my calendar and then inevitably remove them. part of the reason has been the cold and rain, the distance to sac, but i think a lot of it is that i’m having a nice time just hanging out with friends. back in santa barbara the friend group was always pretty centered around music, among other activities obv, but shows were paramount. you knew you could show up and everyone would be there. it was the place to be.
the group i’ve landed in in davis has not been focused on shows, though we do play music together and there’s always music playing on a speaker somewhere, it’s just different. and while they’ll check out a show with me once in a while, i’ve been going to most shows by myself. i was doing it for three years when i wasn’t living with friends, but now that i’m living with people i like, it’s even harder to leave the house, or leave the group, to do something else. but in any relationship - friend, romantic, otherwise - it feels so important to not stop doing the things you love doing just because you found some new things you like to do. obvious statement of the week but i’m going to keep saying it to myself.
hunkering down with the group was essential to my survival through that atmospheric river. but shows are going to be essential to my thriving through the atmospheric river of life, of whatever, lol. and i know that i’ll never be able to be in two places at once, and that friends will hang out without me and i’ll miss out on some things sometimes. it’s so easy to get lost in what i’m missing out on that i don’t get to fully experiencing the thing that i’m doing. a thing that i love doing - a major through-line for me - going to shows. working on releases myself from that fomo mentality!.*

maybe you saw that i was thinking about art the other day but i didn’t say anything about writing. not that i don’t think writing is art, but i maybe haven’t intentionally approached my own writing as art(?). but i do sit here each week and share a few lines and i think that counts as a writing practice. when i have anxiety brain and can’t stop thinking about things (because i don’t want to forget them), i’ll write the thoughts down so i can let my brain rest (or at least make space for other thoughts). and when i send messages to a crush or respond to an email from an old friend i try to be thoughtful and careful. so while maybe they’re not art on their own, i imagine as bits and pieces woven together they could form an art. one large art. a collection of arts. some form that i don’t know yet, but i can picture it printed in booklet form and sitting on your nightstand. you’re about two-thirds of the way through and you’re using a pokemon green energy card as a bookmark. when you finish it let me know if you want to talk.

i’m in a moment. or in between two moments. which i guess would be its own moment? or non-moment? anti-moment? it’s that exact moment where, like when you throw a ball up in the air, or you roll a ball up a hill or like endless ball examples, that moment before you come back down. you’re not coming from anywhere or going anywhere else, realy. you’re just chillin in that spot for a split second. weightless, motionless, momentumless moment. in my case that moment will last the next few days - which is like a split second in a lifetime. but also, this moment is not quite so dramatic ha. i’ll see you in a few days :)

i’ve been packing as i prepare to move to a new house and it takes a while because i get distracted by all the stuff. i love stuff. i wrote a song about it. but i also wrote a song with the line “got to stop wanting things that i can’t grow.” i suppose i can both love stuff and have the desire to not accumulate so much stuff. we’re complicated beings. i don’t even have most of my things here with me. it’s mostly stacked in my parents garage. so much of what i have though are items i’ve diverted from the landfill, and i feel cool about that. and the rest of it is like writings/drawings/notes from friends and a ton of tapes/cds. so many cdrs. also zines and books. i’d love to have a space someday where i can actually organize and display these things. and share them with all the people that have actually successfully stopped collecting objects heh. i mean, i guess this is why libraries and archives exist? media in common. though i don’t think regular libraries have the interest in or space for your cdrs, so i’ll just keep them safe. in bins on shelves in my parents garage.

we’re visiting our parents right now. we is me and rebs and pegs. there are five adults and three dogs in the house. my aunt and her poms are here too. i’m including myself as one of the adults. if i counted myself as one of the dogs, then we’d be more evenly matched - four on four. it’s almost a basketball game, if dogs could play basketball. oh wait, air bud. i have a hard time walking on all fours though. a generally hard time just getting up from being down on the ground. rebs said that she recommends to her clients that have a difficult time getting up from the ground, whenever we do get up we should do it twice. maybe if we just did twice everything that was hard in life we would have twice the amount of suffering. and then the world would be a better place for all. is that how it works? pet a dog.

i can’t really think of any good updates for you right now. anything you want to know? i guess a few things: my therapist went on maternity leave so i saw a new person for the first time last week and i think it’ll be cool. i’m organizing and playing a show in davis on tuesday. i’ve been riding my bike a bit. i’m somehow doing okay in the heat. i pet a dog today. i have a few tomatoes and a pepper growing. i just drank a pink lemonade. maybe that’s enough for the time being. thanks.

so i’ve been hanging out with this baby dog for 10 days. i’ve never done anything like this before. basically been with her 24 hours a day except i left her at home twice to get groceries. otherwise we’ve been thick as thieves as they say. getting into trouble. not really. we’ve just be lying around a lot, we’ve gone on walks and hikes, we went to the marina, we smelled a lot of stuff and generally just had a cute time. she loves to cuddle and she usually just wants to be close to me. i’m on the couch right now and she’s snuggled in next to me. but she also has these weird moments where she whines and sings and barks at me and tries to bite my face and i have no idea what she wants. it usually happens at night so i think she just gets cranky like a baby gets cranky when it’s tired. rebecca wrote me a little handbook but i had to learn some tricks on my own. like, she gets excited when i’m putting my shoes on and tries to bite my shoe laces and fingers so i figured out that i should put her harness on first so she knows that she’s coming with. then i can get ready in peace. i sing to her while she’s eating and rebecca said i don’t have to do that, but i think it helps to get her to eat all her food hehe. there’s so much more that i can share but i’ll just leave it at - someday i hope to have a dog friend of my own. it’s just felt so good to have this little buddy, and i think it’s mutual based on the fact that her face is snuggled into my leg as i type this.

*i’m realizing that while i mentioned indiepop and hardcore (again, i know hardcore is an apex genre with lots of nuance that i don’t know much about) last week as feeling siloed in some ways, i think it’s so interesting that they both specifically overlap quite a bit. maybe more than other seemingly siloed genres within diy? like, in oxnard some years ago there was crossover between yay records pop and local hardcore (nardcore). maybe it was just the folks that i was around, but there was totally overlap. and then up north in san jose there seemed to be a lot of crossover in spaces like think and die thinking, which was a pretty mixed fest. this is california centric cause that’s where i am but i imagine this happens elsewhere? i have friends that crossover in the pacific northwest too so i assume it does. also, was it like that in the 90s as well? is it like that internationally?
the first radio show i did in 2005 was with my friend cole and it was called “cuddle and core” and it was basically a hardcore/twee combo show. and it worked pretty well. people appreciate a dichotomy. they compliment each other. makes sense.*

*dear xanga, i went to the indie pop show last night and i’m wondering if there are any other communities within diy where bands still play diy shows together over decades. maybe within hardcore? but as folks get older it seems like they mostly either stop playing or they become more successful… but with indie pop neither of these things really happen ha. like, can you imagine the egg punks still doing their thing in 2050?? hard to imagine. i mean, maybe, but like hmmmm. as far as the different scenes within diy go, indie pop and hardcore are the most insular, maybe? obviously i’m pretty ignorant of the nuance within hardcore, so maybe i’m thinking too broadly. like, indie pop just fits within diy pop generally. and there is often overlap with other diy music. and maybe insular is the wrong word here cause it has a negative conotation. cohesive, maybe? i don’t know. consistent? whatever it is i think it’s interesting i guess.
afterthought: oh wait, anti-folk feels like that too. and like scenes built around record labels. and regional scenes that aren’t genre specific. maybe i just need to sit on this for a bit. but i still think indie pop is an interesting case study.

dear livejournal, well it’s summer and i’ve transitioned into my summer uniform. it’s basically the same as my rest of the year uniform but with short pants instead of long pants. are they called “long pants” and “short pants” or is it just “pants” and “shorts”? i have a lot of thoughts about my pants. i will share some of them now. i prefer wearing my jean pants because my butt looks really good in them. i don’t have any jean shorts that fit me but i did find these stretchy waist shorts that fit pretty well. last summer i ordered one from the internet and it fit so i ordered like 6 more lol. but my butt just doesn’t look as good in them. i like how jeans have the full double butt pockets. these shorts just have one butt pocket and the pocket is on the inside. i like the way jean butt pockets, which are on the outside of the pant, help draw the eyes to the butt. which is where i want the eyes to go. the jeans, with their thicker material, also just provide more support for my butt, which is important to me. but it’s just too warm in the summer to wear jean pants. so i choose to sacrifice the butt support for warm weather comfort for the season and we can all look forward to the fall and the return of my glorious bottom.

dear livejournal, i finally got the covid. i had a fever for the first 3 days (worst fever sweats of my life maybe?). i went outside for the first time on day 6. and today is day 8. i’ve watched so much tv. i ordered food from an app for the first time. i’ll keep wearing a mask till day 10 and then on friday, day 11, i get to join the world again? how does retesting work? will i continue to test positive for up to 90 days? for both antigen rapid tests and PCR tests? i’ve read a bunch of things but i’m still not totally clear. i’m worried about being around people again in case i’m still contagious. how do i know??

dear livejournal, do you know about your sitz bone? it’s the butt bone that you sit on. when you sit on a chair, your squishy butt fat disperses your weight across a larger surface and you don’t feel that much pressure directly on your sitz bone. but i got a new bicycle seat recently. it’s nose-less and designed to remove pressure from soft tissue, and instead puts all the pressure on your sitz bone. i’ve only spent two days on the seat and i’m already feeling it in my sitz. but it’s a good thing. i’ve spent the last fifteen years not riding a bicycle because of painful hemorrhoids. is this t.m.i.? naw. hemorrhoids have been a pain in my butt long enough. it’s time to take my life back. and my butt back lolol.

dear livejournal, i’ve been in this spring cleaning sort of mode. obviously cliche, but i’ve been reorganizing my bedroom a bit. the place i’ve spent most of my time the past couple years… you heard of it? mostly i’m moving all the food not bombs stuff into the garage, which is huge and sort of ridiculous that i’ve been storing it in my bedroom this whole time. it’s so much stuff. and i need to make space for this cute ska cat bookshelf i found at an estate sale. i got a new bike seat and i hope it makes my rhoided buttock feel better enough to ride. i got the landlords to do some maintenance that just took a while for me to bug them about (emphasis on the bug* part because davis cockroach summers are horrifying). we’re feeling good and fresh with all these changes !

“To give a brief recap, my best friend Alej and I were neighbors and lived in a 4-unit old victorian building. There was a fire that broke out at 4am Thursday morning and not a single fire detector went off. An unhoused man saw the flames and woke up the whole building. If he hadnt, my dog and I would have died in our sleep from the smoke filling my apartment. My neighbors and their pets would also have died or been severly injured. Our landlords have been extremely unclear and have left us unguided without many resources to navigate this situation. We frantically packed up our apartments in less than 24hrs, loaded up a uhaul and threw everything in a storage unit. My two neighbors had their apartments fully destroyed by the fire. Although mine and Alej apartments were not burned, every single thing we own has been damaged by smoke toxins and potentially asbestos. Our storage unit is filled with our belongings however most things will need to be replaced. Many things were left behind like our couches, dining tables, etc. We are grateful for the love and support of our loved ones, but we will need community support.”

*“Labryssa is a 32 year old black trans woman from Oakland, California. Finally, after years of trying, she has scheduled bottom surgery and is fully ready for this new lease on life! This fundraiser is to cover the expenses to prep for and recover from surgery. The cost of living in the San Francisco Bay Area is among the highest in the nation so she needs to be truly prepared to avoid added stress from vulnerability. The goal for this fundraiser is $19,000.
She will be paying for things such as laser hair removal in advance of the surgery ($2100), rent / bills and all living expenses while unable to work ($3600), as well as transportation to numerous doctor appoinments ($850), and lodging in San Francisco for 3 weeks following the surgery ($6000). Also aiming to secure $6000 to purchase a car so Labryssa can finally be able to travel safely to and from medical appointments, work (expanding her job opportunities), and the homes of her chosen family.”*

“For most of her life, Wanda Clark (known to everyone as Nana) was the pillar and provider for her family. As she not only cared and housed her children, her grandchildren and her great grandchildren, she also opened her home and provided for extended family members and the neighborhood kids and was a place of refuge for many; continuously passing on retirement for years to make ends meet for them all. One year, as she attempted to expand her home to house more family members, the hired contractor took off with the money leaving her with an unfinished home and no funds to fix what was already torn. Today, Wanda is in the ultimate battle against the City of Sacramento to keep her home. As it was condemned, boarded up and her and her family was evicted, she continued making payments on her mortgage to fulfill her commitment to her lender in hopes of returning home. What started out as what Wanda believed was a partnership of restoring her home, was nothing more than misinformation given by the City of Sacramento and Gerard F Keena II of the Bay Area Receivership Group. Wanda felt as though she was misled by the group and was not properly notified of court hearings and now she stands at the threshold of losing her home for good. On November 3, 2021, the City of Sacramento will be holding an auction to sell her forever home and only possession and like many senior citizens, Wanda is facing a certainty of homelessness. We’re asking the community for help and to spread the word and bring awareness to this injustice.”
