Adrian Avena scored a huge win on Stage Five of the Major League Fishing Bass Pro Tour at Cayuga Lake in upstate New York. It was a $100,000 win that pushed his career earnings past $1 million. Avena caught 20 bass weighing a total of over one hundred pounds. Yes, that is an average of over five pounds per fish. Avena talks about his love of saltwater fishing off the coast of his home in New Jersey, his long wait for his first major win and his passion for snacking on Sour Patch Watermelon candy. Drew Benton just won the 2023 Marathon Bassmaster Elite event at Lake Murray. The Floridian had the lead after two days of competition and then slipped up and barely made the cut to earn a berth on the final day. Benton proved his toughness by coming back strong and taking the crown on the final day. Drew Benton is a master at the technique of sight fishing which came in handy on Murray. Benton is hovering around the million-dollar mark in career earnings and we are sure his best days are yet to come. Please listen to a great interview with a great guy!

Anthony’s hard-fought win came through his ability to push the envelope and do things differently. Gustafson is the first Canadian to take home the prize for winning the most prestigious event in the world of professional fishing. Jeff Gustafson is not only a phenomenal fisherman, he is also one of the nicest human beings in the sport. He is loved and respected, not only by his legion of fans, but also by his competitors, as well. Keith Poche scored his first Bass Pro Tour win and the top award of $100,000 at the Major League Fishing U.S. Air Force Stage Two event on Tennessee’s Cherokee Lake. This smart angler attacked the event in his 18-foot Gator Trax aluminum boat powered by a 90-horsepower motor. The small craft was able to allow Poche to fish “off the grid” where other competitors were unable to get to. Poche is a virtual fishing machine who may be competing in more top-level tournaments than anyone else in professional fishing. Listen to a great guy tell his very unique story.

Adrian Avena scored a huge win on Stage Five of the Major League Fishing Bass Pro Tour at Cayuga Lake in upstate New York. It was a $100,000 win that pushed his career earnings past $1 million. Avena caught 20 bass weighing a total of over one hundred pounds. Yes, that is an average of over five pounds per fish. Avena talks about his love of saltwater fishing off the coast of his home in New Jersey, his long wait for his first major win and his passion for snacking on Sour Patch Watermelon candy. Team USA just won the gold, silver and bronze medals at the 2022 16th annual Black Bass World Championship in Columbia, South Carolina on Lake Murray. Watson and his partner, Fred “Boom Boom” Roumbanis led the way for Team USA. James Watson is no stranger to gold, he has a medal from the 2018 tournament in Mexico, as well. Boyd Duckett is the man who created the concept of Major League Fishing, the incredibly successful bass tournament fishing circuit that has taken the fishing world by storm. He is active in the day-to-day management of MLF and is responsible for many of the groundbreaking concepts that MLF has introduced to tournament fishing. Not only does Boyd Duckett manage this circuit, he competes in it, as well. An accomplished pro, Boyd Duckett won the 2007 Bassmaster Classic in his first full year on the tour. Amazing! Jason Fischer is the Tournament Director for the Lake Erie Walleye Trail. Jason was at the center of a cheating controversy that put fishing on the front page of major newspapers, as well as being on network television and radio. The LEWT cheating scandal also completely blew up social media, too. Listen to Jason Fischer tell the story of how he discovered that a pair of formerly successful walleye fishermen loaded their caught walleyes with lead weights and fish filets, trying to pull a fast one on the entire fishing world. You can’t put one past Jason Fischer! He also did a great job of keeping order at the weigh-in, as many spectators thought the pair of cheaters were going to be tarred and feathered or possibly hung from the highest nearby tree. It’s a story we hope will never be repeated but hats off to Jason Fischer.

Jay Yelas has fished his way to two FLW Tour Angler of the Year awards and one B.A.S.S. AOY. He won a Bassmaster Classic title in 2002. Jay, one of the truly good guys in the sport, has announced his retirement from competitive tournament fishing. He will be filling his time by leading the C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation, which serves disabled and disadvantaged youth, urban youth and members of the U.S. military.

In just his second season on the Elite Series, Bryan had three Top 10s, including his victory at the 2021 Guaranteed Rate Bassmaster Elite at Lake Champlain. His second Elite victory just occurred on the Mississippi River out of LaCrosse, Wisconsin. If he quit fishing right now, we’d say he already had a successful career, and this is only his first year on the Bassmaster Elite Tournament Trail! That is correct – Jay Przekurat just won his first blue trophy and his first six-figure paycheck but that doesn’t tell the whole story. Jay Przekurat led the field from beginning to end at the Elite event on the St. Lawrence River/Lake Ontario this past weekend. Prior to this event, no angler in recorded sportfishing history had ever reached 100 pounds solely with only smallmouth in his live well, but Przekurat did just that. His feat earned him a spot in the prestigious Bassmaster Century Club, which recognizes a four-day total of 100 pounds or more. Few have attained this feat. In addition to making history by joining the Century Club, Przekurat also became the youngest Elite Series champion at 23 years and 26 days old. Jay is the leader for the 2022 Bassmaster Angler of the Year trophy. Amazing! Listen to a great young man tell us about his early successes. Pam Martin-Wells is the most accomplished female bass angler of all time. She is the sport's winningest female competitor and the only woman to reach the top 25 in the annual Bassmaster Classic, against a field of the top male competitors in the world. Martin-Wells is the women's tour's all-time leading money winner, a five-time Angler of the Year and has been inducted into the Legends of the Outdoors Hall of Fame. She now faces the biggest challenge of her life as she valiantly battles cancer. This angler is so tough and determined that she actually won a big LBAA tournament a mere one week after a chemotherapy treatment. In addition, Pam is coaching the fishing team at Georgia’s Emmanuel College. They don’t come any tougher or better than Pam Martin-Wells. Please give her a listen!

Have a happy and safe 4th of July! This week we spend time with a true legend in the game. Tim Horton has been a fierce competitor in the ranks of professional bass fishing tournaments. As a rookie in 2000, he was the only angler in the history of the sport to win the BASS Angler of the Year and Rookie of the Year in the same season. Since then, he has been a four-time Bassmaster Champion and qualified for 11 Bassmaster Classics. Horton has six major wins and nearly $2 million in winnings in his career. A quarter of a million dollars for catching bass! Isn’t that totally amazing? Alabama guide, Brent Crow just won the Toyota Series Championship presented by Guaranteed Rate at Alabama’s Pickwick Lake. Crow sat in 28th place after day one. He qualified to fish the final day by finishing day two in 10th place. He saved his best for last and weighed a final day bag of 23 pounds, 1 ounce to finish over four pounds ahead of the second-place finisher. What a clutch performance! Crow shares some excellent information about fishing water where the DNR raises and lowers the water level. In 1971, Ray Scott loaded the best 24 bass fishermen in America onto an airplane in Atlanta. They had no idea where they were headed. Once in the air, Ray told them that they were going to Lake Mead in Nevada, a waterway that none of them had ever seen before. They were headed to fish the very first Bassmaster Classic. The winner was our guest, Bobby Murray. His grand prize was $10,000. What was the second-place prize? It was a big fat zero. Yep! The first Classic was a winner-take-all affair. Unbelievable! Bobby Murray did a great interview with us talking about the event, his second Classic win in 1978 and his illustrious career in fishing.
Martina "Marty" Drugovich caught an incredible 2.12-pound perch through the ice in Maine. It is the new state record and totally blew the old record away. She explains to us how she caught it.
