On December 10, 2021 Southern Wesleyan University will hold commencement with Mr. Pete Benson as the key note speaker. Pete Benson is an impactful leader and professional with a heart for higher education. Mr. Benson holds a M.A. in Pastoral Counseling from Eastern Nazarene College and a B.A. in Religion from Kingswood University.
Mr. Benson is the founder and co-owner of Beacon Capital Management in Franklin, Tennessee and also co-hosts a weekly television and radio program called “Beacon Retirement Strategies.” Benson has also authored five books. He has been interviewed and featured live on Fox Business and CNBC’s The Closing Bell, and has been featured in several media outlets such as Forbes, Fox business, Yahoo Finance, Reuters, CNBC, local CBS and NBC affiliates in Nashville market, among others.
Jack Eason serves ministries and non profits throughout the United States and around the world sharing principles for fundraising, growth and development, board governance, and other areas of ministry leadership. He enjoys serving as one of the pastors at Cross Roads Baptist Church in the Upstate of South Carolina as well as the of Crossover CUPS Mission, a 501c3 nonprofit organization that has been privileged to serve the local Church and missions-related organizations around the world for 30 years. Jack also travels speaking to students in high school and college and talks about the issue of loneliness, how we can make good friends, and the power of togetherness. Rev. Joy Bryant is an ordained minister through The Wesleyan Church and served here at SWU for 21 years as the Alumni Director. Presently she serves with the Medical Services of America as a Chaplain and Bereavement Coordinator. In speaking on the topic of joy, she shares that it is possible, even amid the difficulties of life, to have joy in abundance. No matter the hurt, pain, loss, discouragement, or despair, joy is a choice that we all can make, for indeed, the joy of the Lord is our strength.

The graduation speaker was Ray Lattimore, Southern Wesleyan University alumnus and former board member, and current CEO of Marketplace Professional Solutions in Greenville, S.C. Lattimore is a writer and speaker, often called upon to share life-tested strategies on how to turn entrepreneurial dreams into successful businesses. He is also renowned for his longstanding commitment to helping support and develop minority businesses. In his graduation address, Lattimore told graduates, “Right now, today, you have all that you need: your education, your faith, your community, and the potential to heal and change the world.”
Chris Peck, SWU alum and former member of the University Singers, served for four years as a marine and currently serves in the National Guard. Chris shares with the SWU community during the Military Appreciation observance, communicating both his gratitude for the support he has received as well as ways that we all can work to support those who are serving in uniform.

For the last session in our Spiritual Emphasis Week Fall 2019, Rev. Zach Coffin invited all to understand that God is moving us to hearing him moment by moment instead of Sunday to Sunday. He shared from Luke regarding the leprous men who were healed “as they went”. Coffin encouraged us to do likewise, to take a step and move in obedience, no matter our circumstances. Their encounter with God came as they went and ours will too. Our journey with Jesus is a daily transformation and as we hunger for God we will experience even greater hunger pangs for Him. He poses the question, “what is it in your life that needs to be reversed?” God is the great Reverser; He can take the worst of situations and turn it to be used for His glory. As you listen today, release those things up to God that are in need of His divine touch. Live your lives in a posture of release and continual praise: palms up.
Dr. Steve Hayduk, Faculty Member of the Year 2018-2019, shares in the opening convocation of the Fall 2019 semester. He speaks from the passage known as the Sheep and the Goats from Matthew 25:31-46, encouraging all to serve others as serving Christ. Jesus Christ admonished those who had not cared for the “least of these”, as having rejected the needy as well as him. Likewise, he praised those who had selflessly served others for in fact they had served him as well. Let us take these words to heart and serve all for the sake of the One!
Dr. Lisa Bross Harding, an integral member of the Southern Wesleyan University family, shared with this year's graduates as the Spring 2019 Commencement Speaker. Dr. Harding currently serves as an internal medicine specialist, assisting the population with her God-given skills in healthcare. She speaks to the 2019 graduates about rightly understanding the difference between an occupation versus a vocation. One is primarily concerned with, and measured by, worldly success, while the other is only concerned with serving a loving God with reciprocal love and commitment. In which are you engaged?
