Hi everyone,

After 183 episodes of the Business Bookshelf podcast I have decided to bring it to an end.

Like for most people the last two years have been challenging.  The constant source of joy has been this podcast.  It has taken me from my study here in South Africa and allowed me to speak to incredible people around the world.

I am very appreciative of everyone who has been involved in the podcast - the authors who were interviewed, the companies that sent me authors to interview, the listeners of the podcast and my family.

Wish you everything of the best!

Episode 180 of theBusiness Bookshelf podcast - Dr. Gregory Bott - author of “Faster Safer Wealthier"

Dr. Gregory Bott is an entrepreneur, investor, and university instructor. At the age of 24, he quit his full-time corporate employment in pursuit of both higher education and entrepreneurship. Since then, he has owned and operated numerous businesses across multiple industries, including hospitality, real estate, and agriculture. His businesses have ranged from franchised to independent, from start-ups to acquisitions, from heavily staffed to one-person operations, from leveraged to debt-free, and from sole ownership to numerous shareholders.

Gregory is the author of “Faster Safer Wealthier: Skip the Start-up and Buy a Stable Business to Build Intergenerational Wealth”. High-risk entrepreneurship is a tough route to a rich life and financial freedom. Start-up stress, like relying on a once-in-a-lifetime innovation or setting out on a one-track objective of billionaire status, results in detours and setbacks rather than the financial rewards you desire.

Not all businesses are high-risk endeavours though. Substantial, lasting wealth can be built in the space between broke and billionaire—when you reframe your idea of business ownership.

Skip the risky start-up and walk straight into an already cash-flowing company to create and retain wealth! Dr. Gregory Bott’s structured framework for small business acquisition will mitigate risk, accelerate wealth accumulation, and elevate your business for profitable growth. With this step-by-step guide for both new and seasoned entrepreneurs, you can start on a steady path of incremental gains as a rightful business owner—for safer financial success that lasts generations.

Episode 179 of theBusiness Bookshelf podcast - David Ehrlichman - author of “Impact Networks"

David is cofounder and coordinator of Converge a network of systems strategists, designers, facilitators, educators, and evaluators who partner with people, organizations, and networks to navigate complexity and co-create meaningful change.

David is the author of “Impact Networks: Creating Connection, Sparking Collaboration, and Catalyzing Systemic Change”. The social and environmental challenges we face today are not only complex, they are also systemic and structural and have no obvious solutions. They require diverse combinations of people, organizations, and sectors to coordinate actions and work together even when the way forward is unclear. Even so, collaborative efforts often fail because they attempt to navigate complexity with traditional strategic plans, created by hierarchies that ignore the way people naturally connect.

By embracing a living-systems approach to organizing, impact networks bring people together to build relationships across boundaries; leverage the existing work, skills, and motivations of the group; and make progress amid unpredictable and ever-changing conditions. As a powerful and flexible organizing system that can span regions, organizations, and silos of all kinds, impact networks underlie some of the most impressive and large-scale efforts to create change across the globe

Episode 171 of the Business Bookshelf podcast - Adam Kahane - author of "Facilitating Breakthrough: How to Remove Obstacles, Bridge Differences, and Move Forward Together"

Adam is a leading organizer, designer and facilitator of processes through which business, government, and civil society leaders can work together to address such challenges. He has worked in more than fifty countries, in every part of the world, with executives and politicians, generals and guerrillas, civil servants and trade unionists, community activists and United Nations officials, clergy and artists.

Adam is the author of “Facilitating Breakthrough: How to Remove Obstacles, Bridge Differences, and Move Forward Together”. Making progress on complex, problematic situations requires a new approach to working together: transformative facilitation, a structured and creative process for removing the obstacles to fluid forward movement.

It is becoming less straightforward for people to move forward together. They face increasing complexity and decreasing control. They need to work with more people from across more divides. In such situations, the most common ways of advancing—some people telling others what to do, or everyone just doing what they think they need to—aren't adequate.

This book describes a new approach: transformative facilitation. It doesn't choose either the bossy vertical or the collegial horizontal approach: it cycles back and forth between them. Rather than forcing or cajoling, the facilitator removes the obstacles that stand in the way of people contributing and connecting equitably. It enables people to bring their whole selves to the process.

I talk to Adam about:

  • Transformative facilitation.
  • Vertical and Horizontal facilitation.
  • What you need to be a master facilitator.

Episode 160 of theBusiness Bookshelf podcast - Joel Schwartzberg - Author of "The Language of Leadership".

Joel is a communications coach and writer. He is an expert in the practice of successful presentations and point-making, Joel's articles have appeared in Harvard Business Review, Fast Company, Toastmaster Magazine, and The Huffington Post, and he's been the featured guest on many business and communication podcasts.

Joel is the author of “The Language of Leadership”. Everyone seems to have an opinion about leadership. We know good leaders Eat Last, Lean In, Break the Rules, Dare to Lead, and are Radically Candid as well as extremely aware of their Tribes, Drive, and Principles. But books about these topics overlook the value of leadership impression—the instant projection you exude as a leader. How do leaders sound? What do leaders say and not say? How do leaders tell stories, send emails, run meetings, conduct video conferences, give speeches, conduct interviews, and even listen to others?

Drawing on his experiences as a leadership coach Joel offers practical tips and entertaining but eye-opening exercises that help readers convey genuine and impactful leadership in every conceivable situation.

Episode 159 of theBusiness Bookshelf podcast - Dr Zina Sutch - co-author of "Leading with love and laughter".

Zina is an innovative and visionary leader in the area of education, executive development, diversity and inclusion, with expertise in strategic planning, communication, and change management.

Zina is the co-author of “Leading with love and laughter”. Science tells us that humans are deeply wired for empathy and compassion and that our emotional selves help us make better decisions and motivate others. However, the tactics we use to train leaders bear little reflection of these advancements; we’re still creating competent but emotionally distant leaders who “manage human assets” and lead by setting goals, deadlines, and deliverables.

In seven succinct chapters, the authors show that people lead best when they tap into their genetically driven human nature to love and nurture, connect and trust. Leading with love and laughter offers powerful dividends: tighter teams, stronger performance, improved morale, greater trust, more creativity, and even better health.

Tshilidzi Marwala is currently the Deputy Vice Chancellor: Research and Internationalisation at the University of Johannesburg. He has published 9 books (one has been translated into Chinese), over 280 refereed papers and holds three international patents. In “Leadership Lessons From Books I Have Read” Tshilidzi adopts the thesis that the source of good leadership is knowledge, and the source of knowledge is experience, which can take many forms – reading widely, listening, and engaging in discussion and debate with other knowledge seekers. If leadership is derived from knowledge and knowledge is derived from experience, the ‘experience’ in this book is from 50 books that Tshilidzi has read, and so the source of knowledge informing leadership is the collective experience of the more than 50 accomplished authors who wrote those books

Episode 146 of the Business Bookshelf podcast - Donald F. White - Author of "Always End with the Beginning in Mind".

Donald F. White is the founder of Treasure Coast Financial in Stuart, FL and succeeded as CEO in 2020. His company grew 21% after exiting. He is the author of two audio series entitled "Legacy Planning" and "Building a Great Business". For over 20 years, Don’s daily radio broadcast, God’s Money, was heard on WAY-FM in South Florida and on the Internet worldwide.

Donald is the author of “Always End with the Beginning in Mind: How Firms Remain Great AFTER the Founder Exits”. People love to talk about Succession Planning, but few ever accomplish the task. The numbers are staggering. The US Department of Labor Statistics tell us after one year in business, 20% of new businesses in America fail, but after 20 years only about 20% of those same businesses will have survived. Of those who survive, less than 20% will continue to a second generation! Most businesses have a cessation plan (a plan that leads to a business ceasing to exist), while very few have succession plans (a plan that leads to a business not only continuing, but thriving after the founder exits).

In "Always End with the Beginning in Mind", Donald takes you on a journey that resulted in a successful business continuation, and will give a founder of a business the steps necessary for a succession plan to actually succeed. A well-thought out and properly executed Succession Plan is a classic win-win. It is a win for the company, namely the clients and staff who are able to enjoy continuity after the founder's exit. It is a win for the successor, who is able to build on the success of the founder. Finally, it is a win for the founder, who is able to exit on their own volition and see what they have built continue to prosper for years to come. Today our guest is Colin Bryar.

Colin joined Amazon in 1998 -- four years after its founding -- and spent the next 12 years as part of Amazon's senior leadership team as Amazon grew from a domestic (US-only) seller of books to a global, multi-dimensional powerhouse and innovator. Colin served as a Vice President at Amazon, and for two of his years he was "Chief of Staff" to Jeff Bezos, AKA "Jeff's shadow", during which he spent each day attending meetings, traveling with, and discussing business and life with Jeff. After Amazon, he and his family relocated to Singapore for two years where Colin served as Chief Operating Officer of e-commerce company RedMart, which was subsequently sold to Alibaba. Colin is co-founder of Working Backwards LLC where he coaches executives at both large and early-stage companies on how to implement the management practices developed at Amazon.

Colin is the co-author of the book “Working Backwards”. Working Backwards is a practical guidebook and a corporate narrative, filled with the authors’ in-the-room recollections of what “Being Amazonian” is like and how it has affected their personal and professional lives. They demonstrate that success on Amazon’s scale is not achieved by the genius of any single leader, but rather through commitment to and execution of a set of well-defined, rigorously-executed principles and practices―shared here for the very first time. Episode 134 of theBusiness Bookshelf - Douglas Kruger - Author of "How to Grow Rich: 50 Ways to Debunk Money Myths and Master Wealth"

Today our guest is Douglas Kruger.

Douglas is a member of the 'Speakers Hall of Fame,' an internationally renowned presenter and the author of 8 business books with Penguin. He speaks globally on how businesses and brands can compete through innovation, and position themselves as industry experts.

I speak to Douglas today about his new book “How to Grow Rich: 50 Ways to Debunk Money Myths and Master Wealth”. Over a billion people globally were lifted from extreme poverty between 2010 and 2020. This is an all-time record, both in outright numbers and per capita growth, constituting nothing short of an economic miracle. Yet the narrative about worsening hardships for the poor prevails, contrary to all evidence. Why? Few topics are more contentious than money. Yet when weighed against empirical data, most of us would be amazed to discover how embarrassingly wrong our assumptions are, and how badly they have impaired our capacity for growth. How to Grow Rich identifies every bad idea about wealth and explains why we don’t have to accept them, and how each one of us can overcome these thought hurdles in order to prosper and grow rich. Start by getting the thinking right, and the money will follow. The book can be purchased here.

Episode 132 of theBusiness Bookshelf - Dr David White - Author of "Disrupting Corporate Culture"

Today our guest is Dr David White.

David is a partner and co-founder of Ontos Global, and a cognitive anthropologist focusing on new approaches to organizational culture and change based on the emerging science of the cultural mind. At Ontos Global he helps organizations manage and sustain transformation.

David is the author of “Disrupting Corporate Culture: How Cognitive Science Alters Accepted Beliefs About Culture and Culture Change and Its Impact on Leaders and Change Agents”. This book bridges the gap between the latest research on cognitive science and culture, providing a valuable guide for change leaders, CEOs, and practitioners on how to sustainably work with and change this important resource.

It answers many of the major questions that have plagued culture work, such as:

  • Why so many CEOs and management consultants preach culture change when so few culture interventions actually succeed
  • Why CEOs persist in believing "culture starts at the top" when virtually no research in anthropology supports that claim
  • Why most culture shaping approaches have no answer for how to affect culture in global companies
  • Why culture doesn’t cause us to do anything, yet we persist in believing that somehow it does
  • Why so many culture-shaping projects focus on corporate values despite the fact modern science shows why changing personal values is exceedingly difficult.

Episode 131 of theBusiness Bookshelf - Lisa Koss - Author of “Leading for Learning".

Today our guest is Lisa Koss.

For more than 25 years, Lisa has been working at the intersection of individual, team and organizational transformation. As partner and co-founder of ONTOS Global, her passion is to support executive clients to dramatically increase their impact through increased self-awareness, resiliency, agility, and the capacity to act wisely and decisively through complex and uncertain times.

She is the author of the book “Leading for Learning”. People do their best work when they are motivated. This may sound obvious, but while people managers instinctively agree with the centrality of motivation at work and its impact on employee engagement, their practices do not follow. With so much "real work" to do every day, how can managers also carve out time to learn, engage, build relationships, tap motivation, encourage development, and inspire?

The problem is a false dichotomy between the world of business and that of people development. What if managers were able to systematically transform everyday business issues into meaningful, developmental coaching opportunities with employees at the same time?

The book has a proven coaching approach to radically shift conversations away from either-or propositions and uses an entirely different lens: transforming business challenges by connecting them directly to employee motivation to achieve the desired business result while dramatically increasing employee engagement. The book can be purchased here.

Episode 129 of theBusiness Bookshelf - Dr Garth Japhet - Author of "Like Water is for Fish: The Power of Story in our Lives"

Today our guest is Dr Garth Japhet

As a young boy, Garth found his life radically shaped by the Jungle Doctor series of books. The stories so enthralled him that, against all advice, he set his heart on medicine. He could see his future – with a backdrop of savannas, golden sunsets, adventure and accolades – as a romantic figure, a healer, a hero.

This fantasy sustained Garth through the challenges of medical training, but finally he arrived. He was Dr Japhet, living the dream. Except the dream was a nightmare. The reality of medicine was not the life he had hoped for. There were times when he cursed the power of the story that had so completely messed up his life. Having struggled with anxiety most of his life, he was catapulted into a deep depression.

And then it happened. Garth stumbled upon the healing power of story – fictional, factual and his own. What magic was at work here? If stories had changed him, could he use story to change others? This question set him on the journey described in Like Water is for Fish; a journey that led to Garth co-founding Soul City and Heartlines, and to an understanding that story, in its multiple forms, is as essential for our lives as water is for fish. In the Purpose Playbook, you will find practices, action steps, and company examples, that will help you, the practitioner, navigate your way as you pioneer change in your company, your business ecosystem, and for society.

He has consulted to Global 1000 and start-up companies in a wide range of industries including healthcare, aerospace & defense, energy, automotive, and consumer packaged goods.

Frankly addressing the many barriers to change that exist in established organizations, they present a systematic approach to overcoming them, laying out: - The principles and mindset that enable you and your leadership team to look beyond a typical short-term planning horizon and grasp the challenges and opportunities that will define the future. - A step by step approach for translating your vision into a strategic plan that your team can align around and commit to. - A way to infuse visionary thinking into the processes and culture of your whole organization, so that it becomes both a repeatable capability and a way of life.

As practical as it is inspiring, Lead from the Future is the guide you and your team need to think as clearly, creatively, and expansively as visionary company founders do–and then act decisively to turn your innovative ideas into breakthrough growth.

This week I interview Nikhil Bumb - from FSG - and talk to him about their recently released excellent Purpose Playbook.

From www.purposeplaybook.org: "Companies are falling in love with the idea of purpose, and what’s not to love? Done well, a corporate purpose is energizing, inspiring, and creates a shared reason for being. But is simply declaring a purpose beyond profits enough? We think not.

The Purpose Playbook is here to help companies better understand what it means to have a purpose-led organization, what makes a purpose worth having, and how to deliver on the promise of that purpose by focusing on shared value.

Shared value, a business discipline where companies use their core business to drive societal change and enhance their competitiveness, is the most powerful practice to fulfill corporate purpose aspirations. This Playbook is designed to help you bring that practice to life.

In the Purpose Playbook, you will find practices, action steps, and company examples, that will help you, the practitioner, navigate your way as you pioneer change in your company, your business ecosystem, and for society."

Nikhil Bumb is an associate director at FSG.

He is passionate about social impact strategies and systems change, with a focus on shared value and market-based approaches to address disparities, drive innovation for under served markets globally, increase access to resources, and shift inequitable systems.

Today we interview Jeff Booth author of "The Price of Tomorrow".

"Technological advances are happening at a rate faster than our ability to understand them, and in a world that moves faster than we can imagine, we cannot afford to stand still.

We need to build a new framework for our local and global economies, and soon. Otherwise, the same technology that has the power to bring abundance to us and our world will instead destroy it.

In this extraordinary contrarian book, Jeff Booth, a leading mind and CEO in eCommerce and technology, details the technological and economic realities shaping our present and future, and the choices we make as we got forward – a potentially alarming, but deeply hopeful situation.

Jeff Booth is a visionary leader who has lived at the forefront of technology change for 20 years. He led BuildDirect, a technology company that aimed to simplify the building industry, for nearly two decades through the dot-com meltdown, the 2008 financial crisis, and many waves of technological disruption.

Jeff has been featured in Forbes, TechCrunch, Inc.com, The Globe and Mail, BNN, Fast Company, Entrepreneur, Bloomberg, TIME, and The Wall Street Journal. In 2015, he was named BC Technology Industry Association’s (BCTIA) Person of the Year, and in 2016 Goldman Sachs named him among its 100 Most Intriguing Entrepreneurs.

Working in distributes teams has become the new normal during the Coronavirus and will likely be the way we work going forward.

Today I talk to John O'Duinn. He is the author of "Distributed Teams: The Art and Practice of Working Together While Physically Apart.

John loves growing a culture where diverse groups of humans work well together in a distributed global workforce. He has worked in distributed teams for 27 years, led distributed teams for 14 years and coached/mentored fast-growing distributed companies for 6 years. So far, he has lived and worked in 13 cities across four continents.

As this way of working has become more mainstream, and even more now during the Coronovirus, he noticed a lack of practical material in this area, so in 2018, he published his book "Distributed Teams: The Art and Practice of Working Together While Physically Apart". This practical easy-to-read management book deals with immediate tactical issues, more complex human dynamics as well as wider social, diversity and environmental aspects. In 2018, he also helped write the State of Vermont's "Remote Worker" law - a very different approach to Economic Development which has been so wildly successful that I'm now helping draft bills and write policies for multiple other jurisdictions world-wide.

John's website is https://oduinn.com and you can find him on Linkedin here https://www.linkedin.com/in/joduinn.

The world is changing so fast that it is difficult to know how the world will look in 5 years time.

This is a question I have been asking the guests on my podcast. In this episode we will revisit these past interviews and see how Colin Iles, Kevin Allen, Mike Lingle and Jaroslav Dokoupil answered this question.

If someone asked you how the world would look in 5 years time how would you answer the question?

Even more important is how do you prepare for the future? For this I feature a clip by Bernard Marr in which he talks about the top five in-demand job skills of the future. I would be interested to hear if you agree with Bernard?

How are you preparing for the future? Do you make continual training a priority in your life? Are you shaping your future or allowing it to happen to you?

Amazon has used the Flywheel Effect to create the amazingly successful company that it is today.

The concept of the Flywheel Effect was termed by Jim Collins in his book “Good to Great”. A flywheel is a massive metal disk, or wheel, that often weighs over 2,000 kgs. It takes a lot of effort to get started but once it starts to turn there are counter weights around the outside of the wheel but start to take effect and it starts to build momentum almost by itself.
