Are you wanting sobriety or constantly relapsing? Whatever the reason, and where ever you are at, you have landed in the right place. I created this podcast out of the desire to share about my success story and how I stay sober to give you hope. This podcast also has guests who are experiencing long term sobriety and are happy. My name is Sarah and after 25 years of alcoholic drinking, I am so grateful to have been relieved of the obsession to drink and freed from the bondage of self. Sobriety doesn't have to be a struggle or hard! Long-term sobriety doesn't have to be a battle or difficult

On Today's episode, we have award winning author, Gigi Langer, to discuss her second book, Love More Now; Facing Life's Challenges with an Open Heart."
As it states on the backcover of her book, Gigi "illustrates how she overcame alcoholism, codependency, and trauma to discover the love at her center." She "shows you how to become a loving, open-hearted person (with firm boundaries). Langer holds a PhD from Standford University and has been sober for 37 years."
It was a pleasure to have her back again to talk about her second book where you can "learn how to dissolve the negative beliefs restricting love for yourself and others."
Jean McCarthy of "The Bubble Hour" Podcast says that Gigi "lays out a framework for change that is insightful and useful, without being prescriptive or overbearing."
She first visited us in Season 1 Episode 10 ( https://spotifyanchor-web.app.link/e/mtTxpPHYoyb ) where we learn about her own personal experiences with alcoholism and sex addiction.

On today's episode, I have the pleasure of speaking with Lisa Avelleyra, author of her first book, a memoir called "Get me to the Abbey." ~~~~~~~~Hi everyone and welcome to Sober Gratitudes! My name is Sarah and I am the creator and host of this podcast. I drank for over 20 years of my life and now have been sober for over 10 years. Because I am having an amazing life in sobriety, I decided to dedicate myself to helping others recover, and to share on this podcast, how you too, can recover and live a life of freedom, no longer enslaved to alcohol. For me, sobriety has created a life that is free of constant drama, chaos, conflict and turned it into a life that is calmer, more relaxed and peaceful.I couldn’t be more grateful that you decided to tune in today for an inspiring interview with, Lisa Avelleyra, Sober 6 years tomorrow as a matter of fact!Lisa is a gifted writer & now, author of her first book, “Get Me To the Abbey,” a memoir about her life in active alcoholism and getting sober at The Abbey, an addiction and treatment center located in Bettendorf, Iowa. The Abbey Addiction Treatment Center - Drug And Alcohol Rehab, Drug Rehab Programs, inpatient Alcohol Rehab (theabbeycenter.com)Lisa is a true miracle. Found nearly dead on her kitchen floor from alcoholism, today she is happily sober in part to her month long stay at The Abbey and because of the connections she made there.I had the opportunity to read her memoir prior to our conversation and I was hooked at first sentence. If you have not read her memoir, you will no doubt want to after you listen to this compelling interview. Trigger warning: Sexual assault is briefly mentioned early in the interview. Please be advised. My friend, who was one of the recovered alcoholics who guided me through the 12 Steps & who we will call, "Mrs. Jones," shares about her experiences drinking, getting sober and today, a recovered alcoholic. She explains some misconceptions and some confusions about Alcoholism, AA and The Big Book through her own experience. Her Cat , ‘Netty’ will often chime in during the interview. 😆Some examples of what you will hear: ~Triggers - "dangerously underestimates what it means to have an alcoholic mind... " ~"Mrs. Jones." ~What it means to be recovered (vs. recovering)~If reason and logic keep her away from the first drink. Listen to hear more....~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Your life matters. Happy New Year and I am so glad you are here! My name is Sarah, and I am sober woman; a wife; a mother....my alcohol misuse took me to very dark places over the course of my life. It wasn't always that way. But towards the end of my love affair with alcohol, I lost all control. I needed help. I was ashamed and embarrassed that I could not control drinking on my own. I did not know how to live with or without alcohol, so I finally sought help from another recovered alcoholic. That one change, this decision to do it differently is why I'm sober today. Every day I need to connect with another person in recovery. I WANT to help others who are trying to get sober or stay sober or want to be happier in sobriety. I want to offer hope. So, this is my gift to you- A Daily Dose of Hope (in sobriety), so you don't feel so alone, and we can stay sober together. It is so much easier when we stay sober together. Will you join me and make me a part of your recovery program? No human power got me sober. I had to get to a place of complete desperation. The progression of my disease was a slow one. I stopped and started constantly. I tried so many different ways to control my drinking on my own. I tried to read things or watch documentaries that would co-sign my wish that I did not have a problem. I would seek out others who drank more than me so that I could find relief that I wasn't an alcoholic. None of that changed my relationship with alcohol and my ability to control it. No human power could save me. At the end of my drinking career I had to believe that I had a problem...but how could I live or live with out drinking alcohol?

My youngest son has autism. He is delayed in many areas of development but one thing we know for sure is that he embodies the ability to be genuinely friendly. Daniele and I met because she listened to an episode I was in on podcast called Adventures In Autism with Megan Carranza. I spoke mostly about being an autism mom but I briefly mentioned at the end of the episode how grateful I was to have gotten sober as it made me a more present mother. Daniele identified and then joined a zoom group I started that meets every Tuesday called Sober Autism Parent Community and you can find out more about this unique group on Instagram. Nearly 9 years ago, when I arrived at a place in my life when I realized I could never have just 1 drink, I felt ashamed. I told only a few people because I felt like a failure. I didn't understand back then, that my drinking problem was not a moral failing. I was not a bad person, I was a sick person and I chose to get better. I chose to do something radical according to societal standards and better my life by abstaining from alcohol forever, one day at a time. It baffled me that I could never have just one drink. I hated the shame I felt It had baffled me that I wanted to drink a lot. It baffled me that when I wasn't actually drinking, I was thinking about when I would be able to drink. In my 12 step program, I learned why I couldn't have just 1 drink. I learned I wasn't a failure or a weirdo. I learned that I had alcoholism. People helped me learn how to live a better life, freed from the chains of addiction. But for years, I was still incredibly embarrassed and ashamed and did not want people to know.
But, what if, 9 years ago, I decided to lose weight because I was harming myself with too many calories through sugar of fat? .... Would I have had the same feelings of shame like I did when I quit drinking alcohol? Would I feel like I needed to hide it as a secret? Would I worry that I would make people feel uncomfortable when I said "no, no seconds for me." Would people say, just eat less for 6 months and then you can go back to eating sweets/high fatty foods! It'll be fine!
I write this NOT to blame any person or group of people. Society has successfully made it perfectly normal to drink a legal drug to excess to cope with the normal realities of life. That's what made it so easy for me to hide my alcohol addiction. My ability to party hard was celebrated. Society cheers us when we wear shirts that say "drink wine because my baby whines." Do we see shirts that say "smoke that ciggy because your kids are exhausting you, so take a well deserved inhale"?
There is no shame in wanting to quit drinking . I believe in you 🥰.

I'm so honored to have Clay F. back on my podcast for a second time. He was a stranger and my 6th guest back in January 2020, and has become a dear friend of mine and my family. He is a loving husband and Godfather, faithful friend, and Author of 4 books which you can find on his website https://www.sarcasticbigbook.com . On Clay's website, he states "The books come from a loving and helpful spirit, and its author has been guilty of everything the books contain. They aim to bring levity as well as provoke thought, as an inverted message often galvanizes the one that’s actually true." Seeing no other options, she chose to embrace her forever sobriety. In the Sober Powered Podcast, Gillian will share how she stopped chasing the buzz, the science of alcohol addiction, and why sober life is the best life. On her podcast, she talks about the science of and psychology of addiction. Dominique, from the Instagram account https://www.instagram.com/uniquepivot/ is my guest today on Sober Gratitudes. My Guest for this episode is, Gabby, from www.recoveringartfully.com. She is an Autism Mom and she is Sober. She shares about difficult personal experiences in active addiction including a suicide attempt, and her courageous work to change her program of recovery, with the help of another alcoholic. She shares her gratitudes in sobriety including an improved relationship with her husband, and becoming a more present mother to her son with Autism. I love Gabby's story because it is an example of how when we, as parents, make positive progress through sobriety, our children make progress, too. For Gabby, getting sober gave her a better and more manageable life. It also meant finding peace in recovery as an Autism Mom. I can really identify with Gabby's story. I have 2 children with Autism. For me, getting sober meant no more blaming myself for my childrens' challenges. In my experience, drinking alcohol was a coping mechanism for issues in my life. One of those issues was coping with my own insecurities and fears with being an Autism Mom. In recovery, I developed the tools that helped me parent with more confidence and selflessness, and I see the positive results in my children today! If you are parent who is struggling, it is never too late to ask for help.
