The OG ATP lineup of James and Alex is here this week following Everton's 1-1 draw at Goodison Park vs Marco Silva's visiting Fulham, to take EFC to 5 matches unbeaten. Despite an enormously frustrating 90+ minutes where Everton were comfortably 2nd best, Michael Keane at striker was a genius tactical change from our not at all stubborn manager...

KIDDING! (kind of)

Beto's late substitution paid huge dividends as he found himself on the end of a great cross from Ashley Young, and seized the chance with emphasis and ensuing emotion.

As usual, we break down the timeline of events and discuss the major moments with some help from our loyal and much appreciated listeners (thank you!). They also look at whether DCL and Harrison make way for Lindstrom and Beto despite the run of positive results.

The ATP brings you an episode directly following Everton's 2-0 win away from home at Ipswich Town. An IT outage at Portman Road delayed the start by 15min signaling a rarity in PL football. Alex, James, and Shan dive into all the details of the match including lineups, key plays, and positive performances. As always, we had help from our Listener's with plenty of commentary regarding the match. We wrap it all up by looking ahead the next couple of weeks.

It was a strange scoreless tie at Goodison vs. a Newcastle team that probably deserved more. The ATP takes us through all the drama in a match that definitely its fair share. From controversial officiating to tactical mishaps, James and Ryan break this one down in a lot of detail with the help of the tremendous ATP listener base. The duo get into the tactics, the use (or misuse) of personnel, and the strange decisions from a referee that doesn’t seem to favor Everton (also discussed). Thanks a ton for the excellent comments this week and the discord dialogue that really helped make this a more entertaining pod for a match that was seriously lacking in quality and entertainment.

The ATP is thrilled to be back and to capture the details of Everton’s first PL victory of the 24-25 season. James and Ryan attempt to break down a very tactical match that featured a very poor first half and a much better second. The dynamic duo get into all the highlights and some pretty telling numbers as well as listener comments that guide us through a very mixed performance at Goodison Park. They also talk a bit about the Friedkin impending takeover and discuss how the team looks now that Jarrad Branthwaite is finally back from injury. There may finally be some reasons to be optimistic.

2-0 is the most dangerous score in football. If you're Everton, it precedes near cetain calamity. After the ATP missed last match, the football gods clearly wanted the ATP to pod after a 3-2 loss after take a 2 goal advantage. However, this match at Aston Villa had a very different feel and tactical backdrop that James and Ryan break down in their latest episode. From the lineup choices to the tactical approaches and the confusing substitutional patterns, the ATP explores the problems as well as potential solutions going forward. James and Ryan also get into some borderline unbelievable numbers from the match performances as well. The ATP then bring in a bunch of listener comments to explore team solutions going forward.

It was a tough one in London where Everton once again incurred an unfavorable result in a 4-0 beating courtesy of Spurs. The ATP tries to make sense of a bad combination of tactical mishaps, individual mistakes, and curious coaching decisions that contributed to the lopsided scoreline. James and Ryan gets into some of the game stories such as Dyche’s pre and post-match interviews about zero, heros, and European expectations. The dynamic duo also try and look ahead to see if there is light at the end of the tunnel and whether or not they might see it sooner than later. As always, the conversation is guided by the loyal ATP listener, who are very much appreciated after poor results such as this one.

Toffees worldwide were hoping to see the beginning of Goodison's final season begin on a bright note. Instead, we were treated to all-too familiar reminders of Everton's shortcomings and bad fortunes of late, as EFC fell 3-0 to the visiting Brighton & Hove Albion. James and Ryan break down the season opener: from lineup selections, to the questionably overturned VAR decision, to the Ashley Young straight red, and more. They also lament the over-the-top reactions from some of the fanbase who seem to be in rare form for the opening weekend. It also would not be a true ATP episode if the DESPERATE NEED OF A RIGHT BACK was not discussed at length. The show wraps with the guys trying to guess when Sean Dyche might start to incorporate the new signings into the team.

We appreciate all our listeners and contributors as we head into our 6th season covering the Toffees, and we hope you enjoy the episode!

Very excited to bring you all something a little bit different from the ATP ahead of the start of the 24/25 PL season! James is joined by Shan Khan for an Everton-oriented preview of the soon-to-start campaign. In this episode, the guys remove the top 6 finishers from the conversation and elect to focus on the moves made by the clubs expected to be in and around Everton's league position come next May. They give a rundown of each team's performance last year, discuss any major incomings and outgoings, and give their take on how they feel each club will fare. Any feedback on the format and content is more than welcome!

Producer's Note: We continue to be unfortunately plagued by recording issues and as a result, James' audio is a bit robotic intermittently during this episode. Hopefully it's not too distracting, but sincere apologies. We are working to get it resolved ASAP.

The ATP follows up its annual team assessment pod with a new episode to talk about the several outs/ins this week – Onana, Lindstrom, O’Brien – as well as where they think the team is position by position after the friendly vs. Salford City. The head of the Optimism Train himself, Shan Khan, joins Alex and Ryan in place of James to offer his takes on the direction of the team and the impacts on each transfer. The boys address everything from Onana’s parting words about style of play and Jesper Lindstrom’s insightful interview to dispelling some misconceptions about Jake O’Brien.

The Power Trio is back for a monster episode! After about a month hiatus, Ryan, Alex, and James are here to discuss the major recent developments in Everton world, of which there have been plenty:

  • Insights into the Castore sponsorship deal, the increase in revenue and the potential commercial opportunities at the new stadium.
  • The emergence of the Friedkin Group as the new prospective owners of Everton, providing background information on Dan Friedkin and his ownership of AS Roma.
    • Analysis of Roma's performance under the Friedkin Group, their recruitment "strategy", and the potential impact on EFC.
  • Potential transfers:
    • Today's official announcement of the arrival of Tim Iroegbunam and a brief scouting report.
    • Jack Harrison's return for a second year on loan.
    • Potential sale of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and the need to strengthen other areas of the team.
    • The ongoing transfer saga involving Jared Branthwaite and Manchester United's approach given the financial implications for Everton and the need to meet the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Regulations.
  • Lastly, they provide an overview of the club's financial situation and the potential impact of player sales. The episode concludes with a discussion of the positive momentum surrounding Everton, including the potential new ownership and the promising recruitment decisions.

For the final post-match of the year, the ATP brings you a full analysis and MORE after a controversial 2-1 loss at the Emirates vs. the Gunners. In a match that meant absolutely nothing due to the City win and Brentford loss, Everton conclude their season with 48-8 points, good enough for 15th in a rather down year from the Premier League, but fully safe from relegation under all circumstances. Alex and Ryan bring to you all the highs and the lows of a fairly uneven match in Arsenal’s favor, but also get into some of the squad news and the implications as Everton go into the summer. A final thanks to all of the pod’s loyal listeners and the tremendous club support that has us continue to do what we do – and as you all know; it’s not always been easy. Onwards and upwards!

It’s nice to finally have a match without majors stakes involved, although we can’t say Everton’s 1-1 draw at Kenilworth Road was the most entertaining affair. The full power trio is together this week to bring you all a relatively relaxing pod with lots of listener comments and lots of disagreement on VAR and penalties. The ATP gets into some of the tactics as well as some of the individual performances in a match that lacked quality at times. Alex, James, and Ryan also get into the remaining matches and the chances of Everton keeping Brentford behind them in the standings and whether or not they could catch Crystal Palace.

Despite this being maybe the most trying season in Everton’s history, with turmoil at every step of the way, Everton have finally ensured safety with a 1-0 win vs. Brentford to make it 9 points in a single week at Goodison Park.

It was a match that seemed improbable in many ways; from the long moments of possession, to the unlikely goal scorer, and ultimately, to the relatively low-stress environment thanks to the Luton Town loss earlier to Wolves. But what is NOT improbable, is the ATP bringing its loyal listeners all sort of humor from our discord as well as analysis from many of our other loyal listeners.

James and Ryan get into the tactics, the individual performances, and finish with a solid referendum on Sean Dyche and the jobs he’s done under difficult circumstances. AND... BREATHE!

Everton win the 244th Merseyside Derby by a score of 2-0!!! EFC's first Derby win at Goodison since 2010. Liverpool’s title chances dealt a near-fatal blow after Jarrad Branthwaite's first half scrambled goal was coupled by a thundering DCL header in the 2nd period of play. James and Alex are here for an old school ATP basking in the glory of 3 points and a hard-nosed, sp*rited display from Tracksuit Dyche's men.

The guys of course discuss what was a rather frantic timeline, key in on some of the top performances including Pickford and Gana Gueye, and breathe a sigh of relief as the Blues have virtually ensured safety in the (corrupt) Premier League for our final season at Goodison.

After missing a match we’d all like to forget, the ATP Is back to capture all details of a 2-0 victory over Notts Forest in a massive weekend for Everton and its future. Alex and Ryan get into all the drama of a match where the VAR and xG Gods seemed to finally show favor to Everton. While the match wasn’t pretty, it definitely had its share of moments from bangers from distance to incidents of violence. We also bring in a ton of listener comments to talk about the lineup changes, the wildly inconsistent officiating of Anthony Taylor, the bizarre post-match Twitter response of Forest, and conclude with a bit of analysis of the relegation battle. We also hope everyone in enjoying Toffeefest in Chicago this weekend – wish we were there – and hope for the best for Beto.

The inevitable finally happened – Everton get 3 points in a match with a victory over Burnley at Goodison Park. While it was anything but pretty, Everton did enough to give them a much needed victory, albeit against a very poor Burnley side. The ATP explores some of the reasons for the lack of quality from the style of play to the conditions as well as Everton missing several key players. James and Ryan also get into a ton of listener comments, critique some dubious calls in the second half, and explore the relegation battle in a bit of detail by analyzing future schedules.

After getting a well needed 3-week break, the not-so revitalized Toffees were back at it again today with a 1-2 loss vs. the Cherries in Bournemouth. The penalty gods took revenge on finally giving a penalty for Everton last week and two big mistakes lead to a 2-0 loss vs. United in Manchester. The ATP is at full force with Alex, James, and Ryan trying to analyze what was a very frustrating performance from the Toffees. They get into the clear difference in halves, highlight a few positive performances, but otherwise take the rest of the team to task for individual mistakes. They also ask the question about how much of the results are the fault of the manager and what Everton can do to right the ship during an extended break likely away from England. Despite being on the back foot for the majority of the match, Jarrad Branthwaite's brilliant finish had Toffees worldwide hoping for our first win of 2024. Optimistic feelings were bolstered after Billy Gilmour was shown a straight red for a shocking challenge on Amadou Onana. Instead, it's now 4 draws in 5 matches for Everton, after Lewis Dunk's stoppage-time header brought the hosting Brighton level today at the AmEx Stadium.

James and Ryan break down the match per usual, examining the relative weakness of Brighton's lineup, EFC's ongoing ineptitude from open play, atrocious refereeing (AGAIN), and the merits of "packing it in" to preserve a lead. As always, some insightful listener comments help drive the dialogue as the Blues finish the day 1 point outside the drop zone, still waiting for news on the points deduction appeal.

The ATP get into the details of the match including the starting lineups, which should have been a good indicator of how the match would pan out. While the match itself was uneventful in a positive way, there was plenty to discuss and the ATP brings in several listener comments to help with the dialog. The ATP then finishes with a bit of a dialog about current form, playing identity, and chances of a deeper cup run.

James & Alex bring you a classic ATP recapping a promising 1-0 win away at London Stadium. A wonderful joint tribute to Bill Kenwright was followed by a gritty, physical display from both sides. Dyche’s Blues were happy to allow West Ham the majority of possession and executed the plan to near perfection. They break down stats in important stages of the match, key tactical battles, and many positive performances. Finally, many wonderful contributions from our listeners in post-match comments.

An early Derby day brings the full power trio together to bring you all the drama from a 2-0 Toffee loss at Liverpool. Alex, James, and Ryan give their takes along with listeners on all the drama – the red card, the lack of red card, Craig Pawson’s performance, the tactical switch to 531, and the overall Everton performance. The ATP also tries to look at how much of this is Dyche’s tactical setup and personnel decisions vs. individual performances. They also take a hard listen and look at Sean Dyche’s post-match comments and some of the ridiculous language that constitutes the FA Rulebook.

James is not longer in Liverpool, therefore Everton win. In the sunshine at Goodison Park, the Toffees matched their highest goal output of season and kept a clean sheet for the first time this campaign.

Alex and James are here for a bit of a throwback to the OG pod (though they both miss Ryan dearly), going through the customary instant reactions, lineups, tactics, and main moments of an enjoyable victory. They then discuss the changes to the midfield forced upon Dyche, the emergence of Jack Harrison, Onana's quality, and a strong performance from our #9.

Wrapping the show with a number of insightful listener comments, it's clear the fanbase are reveling in the victory. We hope you enjoy the recap!

First of all, Happy Birthday to James Boyman and congratulations for representing the ATP well in a 2-1 loss at Goodison to Luton Town. As a result, Alex and Ryan hold down the pod this week and discuss how big of a loss this is, where we thought Everton went wrong, and what this side could look like in the future. Lots of listener comments this week with emphasis on Sean Dyche’s role and whether or not the adjustments he made - Gana off, 2 CFs, Patterson for Young, Danjuma for McNeil - were the right ones today. But most importantly, thank you James for bringing your good luck and charm to Goodison as you definitely made an impact. LINKS: https://linktr.ee/usatoffeepod

Per usual, the duo mix in some tactical analysis, a bit of data, and a ton of listener comments. Some might find it hard to believe, but Everton finally won a game of football, and did so in convincing fashion away from home! The 1-3 victory at Brentford is our first of the season and sees the Toffees to 15th in the table. Goals from Doucoure, Tarkowski, and DCL marked a superb team performance.

James and Ryan bring you full recap of all the main moments as well as a tactical breakdown of how Sean Dyche got the better of Thomas Frank. They discuss the decision to bring James Garner in for Danjuma, Dwight McNeil finding fitness and form, and the midfield trio's strong showing controlling the middle of the field.

The full power trio is here to bring you all action (or lack thereof) from a 1-0 loss vs. Arsenal at Goodison. While Everton have had considerable success against the Gunners at Goodison in recent times, it was not to be as Everton were outdone by a terrific goal by Leandro Trossard. The ATP gets into the central debate of the match as to whether or not the style of play is at fault or if it’s instead the individual performances. Alex, James, and Ryan also take a ton of listener comments and talk about a wide range of topics that eventually devolves into strange commentary on life in Colorado vs. Maine as well as the merit of Taco Bell, Rib-eyes, and authentic Mexican food.

Alex picked the right match to be on vacation as James and Ryan are left to try and make sense of a 4-0 drubbing by Aston Villa in Birmingham.  A combination of individual mistakes and a tactical mismatch led to Unai Emery’s side embarrassing the Toffees in some almost hard-to-believe ways.  The ATP breaks down the reasons for the one-sided affair as well as goes thru the individual mistakes that led to the goals and general poor play.  The dynamic duo then talk through the glaring needs that remain in the side from our Team Assessment and whether or not we think Everton can address those needs by the end of the window.

The annual ATP season assessment has begun!  Alex, James, and Ryan go thru their annual complete statistical breakdown of this past year’s Everton squad.  They’ve broken down team performance in various aspects and highlighted the individual performances that drove those results.  Some of the numbers and “scary stats” will definitely provide insight and some shocking revelations into what went wrong and what went right this past season.  The trio also have some interesting takes on topics such as why Dyche might not favor Demarai Gray, but might help develop Onana more than one might think; how Dyche could help improve Everton’s turnovers and longer distribution; why Everton’s crossing was so ineffective; how Dwight McNeil managed to increase his scoring output; and why Alex Iwobi might be worth signing to an extension.

Everton seize their Premier League future with both hands after a 1-0 victory on the final day. It was a wonderful Abdoulaye Doucoure volley in the second half that secured the Toffees a 70th consecutive top flight season.

In lieu of a standard post-match episode, we decided to do an impromptu Twitter Space with the Power Trio and a number of guests to discuss the match, top performances, and most importantly, what the future could and should hold for the club.

There will be much more to come from us throughout the summer so stay tuned but for now, a HUGE thanks to all our loyal listeneners for sticking with us through this difficult year. The ATP wishes a Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers out there!  In celebration (not really), the ATP brings you all the highs and (mostly) lows of the 3-0 Everton loss to City at Goodison Park. It was a fascinating tactical battle from the onset and James and Ryan get into Pep’s positional play, which at times that made things tricky for Everton – although hard to argue that it wasn’t just City’s quality showing up at key moments. Beyond that, the duo takes a hard look at Pep’s comments about Yerry Mina, Sean Dyche’s usage of Mason Holgate, potential injuries to Mykolenko and DCL, and Everton’s chances of staying up with the impending matches left vs. Wolves and Bournemouth.  Thank you as always for listening.

The ATP comes at you fast and furious this week after a disappointing draw at Goodison Park against newly promoted Nottingham Forest. Lots of interesting takes on this match and Alex and Ryan incorporate a ton of listener comments into the episode this weekend. From comments on Frank’s lineup & subs to individual performances good (Iwobi?) and bad (Tark?), we appreciate all the fantastic material this week. Alex and Ryan also have their own observations as to how Everton got to such a red hot start and how Forest seemed to weather the storm and find their way out of the wilderness to get a result in Liverpool. The duo also conclude with some thoughts on how Everton can go forward as well as things concerning potential incomings (Gana/Kudus) and outgoings (Dele/Gordon).  LINKS: https://linktr.ee/usatoffeepod Production:  Intro: Steve Barkwill Outro: Kenboib

SPACES. For the first time EVER, the full power trio makes a Spaces appearance to talk silly season and the current transfer window.  We go through what seems like the facts – Dele Alli, Anthony Gordon bid, Gana Gueye, and try to wrap our collective minds around the rest to separate fact from fiction – Che Adams, Armando Broja, Serhou Guirassy, Morgan Gibbs-White, Martin Terrier, Ismailia Sarr, even bring up a podcast favorite Cody Gakpo. Can Everton make a big splash? Are you a Gordon Truther? Are you still on the Optimism Train?  A special thanks to our guest speakers and longtime listeners/contributors @kingkhan225, @AndrewMilington, @nickweinstein27, and @BenJoeEddie.

Everton begin the season with consecutive losses for just the 2nd time in the PL era after falling 2-1 away to Steven Gerrard's Aston Villa side. Stateside Toffees who woke up early for this one likely felt a certain amount of regret after an uneventful first half was marked by a Danny Ings goal to put the Villains in the driver's seat. Buendia added another late in the second half which looked to effectively end the match before a Lucas Digne own goal injected some life into the Blues as stoppage time approached, where they nearly grabbed an equalizer. Ryan, Alex and James get into all the details: Doucoure's injury, Coady's first start, Onana's debut, Frank's questionable subs. As always we get some great comments from our listeners that help drive the discussion, including the critical importance of additional business being completed before the transfer window closes.

It’s a new season, but Everton unfortunately come up short in their opener vs. Chelsea in a rather strange affair. The full power trio is here to breakdown the match from the Good to the Bad and even the Ugly. We have a bit of different format this year and have integrated even more of our amazing listener feedback into the pod, which we hope you enjoy! We also try to answer the tough questions – are we cursed? Can Gordon/Gray play together? Can we stop the hoofball? Can we defend set pieces? Can the PL have consistent refereeing? Will the next guys help? Did Frank make the right subs? Give it a listen! The power trio welcome a special guest this episode with none other than Paul the Esk to answer questions about the 27 Years Campaign. A special thanks to our amazing discord members who supplied us with a ton of potential questions – we tried to get as many in there as we could. Paul also deserves a lot of credit for answering some of the most difficult questions thoroughly and honestly. We get into challenges in running the campaign, how they’ve communicated their objectives, how they complement and differ from some of the other groups out there, and how they plan to move out in order to build consensus among the many different voices in the Everton fan base. It’s thought provoking and in our opinion a really open dialog that we hope you all will enjoy! A very special episode of the ATP, brought to you by Everton and several beers per host. This episode was recorded in segments throughout the day and we were thrilled to welcome on many guests to discuss a number of topics. First is Aaron Free, longtime friend of the show to assert himself as the new Everton ITK. We then had Christian Polanco from The Cooligans pre-match to get into all the fanfare of the day. Time-jump ahead to post-match, where we welcome on Derek Bien, Nick Weinstein, and Shan Khan in succession to break down the 0-2 loss to Arsenal in EFC's first preseason outing. This episode certainly goes off the rails quite a bit but we had a blast with everyone and really hope you enjoy!

The ATP full trio continues with its team assessment and moves on from possession/retention and passing issues to progression, creation, and eventually on to the defense including goalkeeping, overall style, set pieces, and all sort of other dimensions. Again, we try to identify the issues with team performance as well as solutions - can we improve or solve the issues with 1. Better use of our current players or 2. Change in tactics? Or do we need to focus on 3. Recruitment? Lots more data, some of which is again shocking, but we conclude with a summary of what we think the team needs are going into the window and gauge our level of optimism for the upcoming months. We recommend you check out PART 1 first in order to get the full experience in all its glory.  LINKS: https://linktr.ee/usatoffeepod Production: Alex Johnson Intro: Steve Barkwill Outro: Kenboib Learn more about your ad choices. It’s that time of the year again, where the ATP takes a hard look at team’s past season performance in hopes of identifying what went wrong (or right) and how it can inform Everton’s way forward. James, Ryan and Alex sit down to reflect and dissect the numbers from a painful campaign. But first. we take a look back at the summer and our 5 key proposed solutions to improve upon our 59 points and see how many of them we successfully implemented (not many). After taking a quick look at the overall results, we then focus on the attack and try to answer the question – why didn’t we score more goals? Can we improve or solve the issues with 1. Better use of our current players or 2. Change in tactics? Or do we need to focus on 3. Recruitment? Yes, this one is data heavy, but there are some pretty shocking numbers that we found in our research that are revealing and should help guide us through the silly season that is the transfer window.

Everton stumbled over the finish line as the Blues were comprehensively thrashed 5-1 away against Arsenal. Rather than dwell on the loss too much, the ATP elected to record a Twitter Space in lieu of the normal post-match episode. James and Alex welcome a series of speakers on to reflect on the season as a whole, and look at the following questions (and more!)

What's an acceptable finish for Everton next year? What positions do EFC need to improve on? What will we do about Dele Alli, Mina, and others? How will Thelwell and Lampard work together?

Thanks for supporting the show and this great club through a difficult year. We appreciate all of you tuning in week after week. Unfortunately there is no celebration on the ATP for our 300th episode, as Everton drop a 3-2 decision to Brentford in a match that would've secured the Toffees place in the PL next season. Instead, James and Ryan review the ups and downs of a truly strange 90 minutes at Goodison. We get into some stats and tactical approaches, but spend just as much time talking about the officiating, luck, and individual mistakes.  From the shirt tug on Richarlison to the lack of a 2nd yellow card on Everton’s penalty, unfortunately the PL officials take center stage once again. Everton also once again have to contend with injuries against a good side that is able to keep the same lineup match over match. At last but not least we get into listener comments including a discussion that has dominated our discord – has Everton left too much to chance? Was the bigger mistake the Watford match? Can they still get it over the line? Or are we simply praying for Burnley and Leeds results to get safe?

It’s James and Ryan representing the ATP again bringing to you all the excitement (or lack thereof) from Everton’s 0-0 draw at Vicarage Road against Watford’s B team. The show includes an interesting debate continued from the ATP Discord on Everton’s tactical approach that asks a lot of questions – was Everton too pragmatic? Should Frank have ditched the 541 and revert back to the 4141/433 from April? Did he wait too long to make adjustments or to make subs? Or is this Everton just lacking some quality? Beyond that, we get into some fascinating numbers capturing just how futile Watford’s attack was and how inefficient Everton was with its opportunities. Ultimately, the real question is - was this is a missed opportunity or a valuable point on the road? Tune into the ATP and let us know what you think! A very full and slightly unconventional episode today following Everton's 0-1 defeat to Manchester City at Goodison Park. The Toffees end the day feeling incredibly hard done by the bizarre and inexcusable decision not to award a PK for an obvious handball in the box. Atrocious refereeing aside it was a performance worthy of at least a point as the Lampard era continues to provide encouraging signs to the fanbase. In our first segment, Alex and James welcome Bridget Bryson of the Atlanta Evertonians on to promote a survey being issued by the Everton Stakeholder Steering Group. This is a GREAT opportunity for fans to weigh in on the future of supporter representation at Board level of EFC. The ATP definitely struggle this week to try and make sense of a 2 goal loss to Southampton at St. Mary’s. Alex and Ryan walk through the tactical explanations as well as what went wrong over the 90 minutes. As well as some pretty harsh indicators of the poor performance. They talk about Frank’s past encounters with Southampton as well as some of the individual performances, which simply were not up to par. Of course, the ATP audience provides tons of comment today, which are much appreciated. But many questions remain going forward – can Frank get this team playing better? What happened to the pressuring and hard working side we saw last match? It’s the ATP sadcast this evening as Everton drop a tough one to Newcastle 3-1 at St. James' Park. So much to dissect in this one and Alex, James, and Ryan get into all of it. We talk about the impact of the lineup choices on Saturday, the impact of injuries, the usage of certain players and tactics, as well as why Everton were not able to create against a relatively poor Newcastle side. The power trio also get into some pretty shocking stats that underscore some obvious deficiencies with the performance as well as address the lingering issue at hand…is Everton TRULY in a relegation battle?

It’s finally match day for Everton and the ATP is back to capture all the highs and lows in the 3-2 loss at home to Brighton. It was definitely a story of two halves as Alex, James, and Ryan walk through the bizarre lineups and tactical setups that resulted in early domination for the visitors and their first victory in Goodison in their history. Inevitably, the spotlight falls on Rafael Benitez and the ATP power trio decomposes everything from the continued drama of the Lucas Digne saga to the post-match comments on Rondon and the Goodison boo-birds. While they did their best to be too objective, the ATP in this episode did not lack things to say about the performance and the manager.  SOCIAL MEDIA & DISCORD LINKS Production: James Boyman Intro: Steve Barkwill Outro: Kenboib Learn more about your ad choices. Despite some winter match cancellations, the ATP stops for no one! In this special episode, James and Ryan take a critical look at the Lucas Digne & Rafael Benitez situation. They walk through not just the drama, but look at player and manager history as well as take a critical look at Lucas Digne’s performance not just this year, but also last year. Has Digne really been out of form for 12-18 months? We aren’t so sure. Beyond that, the tag team even takes some time to explain how data can help inform opinions on players and why the “eye test” might not be the perfect solution, either.

Everton dropped out of the FA Cup Saturday evening after a 2-0 loss to champions-in-waiting Manchester City. Despite the scoreline, the injury-battered Toffees were resolute in defense for almost the entire match before an unlucky crossbar deflection put Ilkay Gundogan in for an easy header that would decide the match.   Ryan and James break down the match, discuss why it made sense to play a compact style vs the expansive Cityzens, and look at the positives from today's result. We also look at some Everton Twitter reactions as well as those from our listeners. Everton lost their 7th home PL match of the season Saturday, falling 2-1 to Burnley after conceding 2 goals in the first half hour of play. A Doucoure and Siggy-less midfield meant Carlo once again had to change personel, and brought Tom Davies into the middle with Iwobi in a free number 10 role. Ultimately it was too large an obstacle to overcome with EFC scuffing several good chances.    James and Ryan walk through what went wrong, including the formation changes, subs, and tactics. EFC fell to Thomas Tuchel's resurgent Chelsea side 2-0 on Monday night, marking the Toffee's first away defeat since November. A disappointing result but Abdoulaye Doucoure's absence proved to be pivotal as our midfield was easily bypassed by Chelsea's superior depth and quality.    J+R get into all the usual topics: lineups, tactics, flow of the game, key plays, individual performances, and listener instant reactions. The Toffees moved into 5th place following their 3rd consecutive win Thursday evening, a 1-0 nail-biter vs West Bromwich Albion. Much like the Southampton match earlier in the week, Everton managed to create very little threat for most of the game, but a bit of micro-management by Don Carlo to put Gylfi on a corner kick paid dividends. On his second try he found the head of Richarlison who has now scored in 4 consecutive matches, the first Brazillian to do so in the Premier League. James and Ryan assess the lineup, break down the tactics, and discuss what this victory means for the rest of the campaign. We also look at stats and read instant reactions from our listeners. EVERTON WIN AT ANFIELD! EVERTON WIN AT ANFIELD! The blue boys get one over on the reds at long last as Everton defeated Liverpool 0-2 for their first victory at their former ground since 1999. A massively composed and defensively disciplined performance from the Toffees who went ahead after just 3 minutes through a James-Richarlison linkup, and put the game to rest with an 82' penalty slotted away by Gylfi Sigurdsson. James and Ryan bask in the glorious aftermath of the match and celebrate Everton's biggest win in a long, long time. Everton were played off their own pitch by a dominant Manchester City team midweek, giving them their 17th consecutive victory. The 1-3 loss at Goodison brings the Toffee's home winless streak to 5 games. Despite going in level at the break through a brief moment of brilliance by Iwobi, Coleman, Lucas Digne and Richarlison, the well-oiled machine of City were too much for a side still missing some key players. James and Ryan begin with the news of an exciting new partnership between club sponsor hummel and the NA Everton supporter's groups. Everton fell 0-2 to Fulham at Goodison Park on Sunday, the first home loss to the Cottagers EVER. Everton defeated Spurs in a thrilling, nervy 5-4 Cup tie at Goodison Park that felt more like a fever dream than a football match. Anyone experiencing whiplash after that one?? Everton claimed a stunning point at Old Trafford after erasing 0-2 and 2-3 deficits, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin scoring the last goal in the 94th minute. The blues scored all 3 of their shots on target, but by and large allowed United to dictate much of the play. The point sees us move back into the top 6 with games in hand. James and Ryan hash out the result, going through the different tactical phases of the match, lauding the spirit of the team, and breaking down key plays. Everton fell to bottom-of-the-form-table Newcastle United 0-2 at Goodison Park. With Newcastle winless in their last 11 matches prior, this ended up being a classic "Everton, that" moment where it felt as though the Toffees could have played for a million hours without scoring. In a match about as exciting as a 0-0 draw can be, the Toffees earned a valuable point at Chelsea, keeping us at 9th in the table but only 1 point away from 6th as we head into another dreaded international break. Some very good performances and some that left a little to be desired.

Post-match musings after a comprehensive and emphatic win for the Blues vs Brighton & Hove Albion. Undeservedly even at half after the issue of zonal marking on set pieces reared its ugly head again. But few will remember the incident after a beautifully struck shot by Seamus Goalman and some clever work from Richarlison put the game out of reach. Learn more about your ad choices. Not quite how we were hoping to cap off the weekend. A respectable away performance from the boys in blue was overshadowed by some shocking decisions from Jon Moss (aka 12th man for whichever top 6 side plays Everton) and a neat little finish from Anthony Martial just after half. In this episode we break down the match, and look to take positives from some strong individual showings in midfield and defense. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Three wins on the bounce now after a dramatic win in which we almost resorted to classic Toffee form (conceding a penalty against the run of play). Jordan Pickford's flailing boot managed to fight off the Ghost of Managers Past and 3 excellent substitutions from Marco resulted in 2 great goals. Learn more about your ad choices. Momentum, momentum. Looking for 3 PL wins in a row for the first time since the 2016/17 season, Everton face a Crystal Palace side who have started the season poorly and will likely have their 2 biggest attacking threats unavailable. You'd think it would be a must-win, especially with the away fixture vs Manchester United looming on the horizon, but it is Everton after all.
