My name is Dustin Kensrue and I’ve always been fascinated by the REALLY BIG questions. I’ve spent my life as a songwriter (in Thrice and on my own) wrestling through those big questions, but now I’m starting a new phase of that exploration. I’d love for you to join me on the Carry The Fire podcast, where we dig deep into those big questions through the lens of the good, the true, and the beautiful as we speak with people from a wide variety of backgrounds, beliefs, and professions; together we will all glimpse the world anew through their unique perspectives. Carry the fire with us today!
Hey friends, thank you for all the support for the past 96 episodes, Patreon included, we've created this year. Andy Lara and I take a moment to discuss the future with a new Thrice album being produced, and we chat a bit about some of the highlights over the past year. Cheers.

Kintsugi is a centuries-old Japanese process of repairing broken pottery with a lacquer that is dusted or mixed with powdered gold. He was the first theologian elected to the prestigious American Academy of Arts and Sciences for his interdisciplinary work in ecology, economics, and biology.
While Dr. Cobb is well versed in process philosophy much of his work has been as a process theologian. Process philosophy and theology provide us a means for retaining values such as the good, the true, and the beautiful as well as explaining God’s agency in the world all without denying what we learn through science. And, often aligning more with what we learn through science vs what we learn through strict materialism. This is a bit of a heady conversation but, John is wise and a delightful human. I believe you will all enjoy this.

Today on the podcast we have the lovely and enigmatic Aaron Weiss, singer and lyricist for the fantastic band, mewithoutYou. Who happens to be out of the road currently with my band Thrice as we tour through the end of February in celebration of the 15 year anniversary of our album, Vheissu.
I had a blast sitting down and having this conversation with Aaron who, as you’ll see, is never afraid to dive into the deep questions. A bit of a theme emerged in the course of our conversation as we discuss at length, and from many angles, the dangers and downfalls of labeling, dividing and chopping up the world around us. I hope you all enjoy this conversation as much as I did.

We are pleased to welcomeDr. Robyn Henderson-Espinoza on the podcast today! Dr. Robyn occupies many places in the borderlands, identifying as a public theologian, a transqueer activist, and a Latinx scholar. They recently released a new book called Activist Theology, which is great, and the book itself and the idea of activist theology seemed to want to defy any neat categorization. We discuss all of this and as well as touching on the relationship of thought and experience, the way that story can revolutionize social practices, and we close on Robyn’s simple but profound take on anger's connection to relationship.

On this week’s episode of Carry the Fire, Author and Professor, Dr. James P. Carse joins us. Dr. Carse does not consider himself a religious person per se. But, he is the author of numerous books on religious topics and he taught religious history and literature for 30 years at NYU. His widely read book, Finite and Infinite Games, came out in 1987 and is having a recent resurgence in influence. In our conversation, we talk about mysticism in various traditions, Dr. Carse's framing of what he calls systems of inquiry vs systems of belief, and he shares the way his observations of cooperative play have influenced his general philosophy of life. This episode may be on the heady end of the scale, but there is a lot in this episode that everyone can grab onto.

Today on the podcast we are joined by Gerard Way. Gerard is the singer of the band My Chemical Romance and also has released some great music on his own. He has spent the last few years writing comics, including the very popular Umbrella Academy comics which have also recently been adapted into a great show on Netflix. In our conversation, we talk about creating worlds and inhabiting characters, the beauty and the difficulty of creative collaboration, the complexity of trying to incorporate time-travel into a story, and we also get into Gerard’s spirituality, and I want to give a brief heads up for some of you regarding that.
Gerard is going to talk a bit about magick and witchcraft. While I’m no expert on either, I do know enough to know that these words in this context probably don’t mean what most of you probably think they do. Some of you might not bat an eye hearing them but a lot of you probably came up inside of a worldview where someone who was interested in these things was considered very evil, and Gerard is very far from that. If I can try to briefly provide a new framework for you it would be this. Generally, modern practices of magic and witchcraft, while being diverse in form, incorporate various insights and ritual elements from animistic pagan and folk religion, as well as incorporating some psychological intuitions from different fields and traditions. Practitioners often tend to be very concerned with the earth and our connection with it. While this is not my spiritual tradition or practice, I recognize that we all have things to learn from each other. I especially think the ideas in these traditions about finding our place within the natural world is a helpful corrective to the western traditions’ tendency to want to dominate over nature rather than see ourselves as a part of an interconnected web of being. I had no idea we’d be talking about any of this going into the conversation, but in the spirit of this podcast, I’m so glad I got to hear from another unique perspective on the good, the true, and the beautiful.

She also holds an M.A. in Psychology and recently earned her Ph.D. at the University of British Columbia in Counseling Psychology. In our conversation, we get into a wide variety of topics including embodiment and mental health. We discuss why we are so often disconnected from our bodies and what we can do about it. We explore connections between evolutionary biology and its connection to morality and consciousness. And Hillary shares some practical advice on what to look for when you’re trying to find a therapist.

Welcome to Carry the Fire Podcast.
Qasim Rashid is a political candidate running for office as a Democrat for the Virginia Senate. Qasim is an author, attorney, and human rights activist. He is a Muslim of a branch of Islam you might not have heard of before. He also has a podcast with a friend where one of their goals is to remind us all that Muslims, Christians, and Jews used to get along better than we seem to lately. Qasim is a big believer in the power of dialogue between different kinds of people as a means of bringing a better and more loving world into being which, makes him a perfect fit for this show.
Disclaimer
I want to say that everyone is welcome here, regardless of your political associations. Guests on the show are going to have opinions and beliefs about better ways to do life together, and sometimes those ways involve political opinions, but the show is not, and I am not, tied unthinkingly to any particular party. As much as I might lean more "blue" on several issues, it doesn’t mean that I want to close down discussion with something who might lean red for their reasons. Much of what is missing in the political discourse in our country at the moment is serious and civil engagement about the issues that matter to us all.

Welcome to Carry the Fire Podcast. Hosted by Dustin Kensrue.
This preview episode is offered as an introduction to share about what's to come from Carry the Fire Podcast. Our friend, Dan Koch (Depolarize! and You Have Permission Podcast), joins us to interview our host Dustin Kensrue as a means to explore where this show will go, discuss what it means to pursue the Good, True, and Beautiful, and what we can expect from our guest list. Next week, a full episode interview with Dustin will air on Dan's podcast, You Have Permission, that dives deep into the questions discussed on this episode and much much more. Make sure to tune in to his show next week for that interview.
More specifically, the show aims to explore those big questions through the lens of the good, the true, and the beautiful. While these days it may feel like our disagreements and divisions threaten any hope of building a broad and beloved community, could it be possible that we all share some innate common belief in the value of these three transcendentals? By exploring our differences through this common ground, I believe our individual worldviews can be enriched by our interactions, becoming more good, true, and beautiful every day. To this end, we will engage in conversations with people like you, from a wide variety of backgrounds, beliefs, and professions. Whether the conversation is with a musician or author, a scientist or philosopher, we will together glimpse the world anew through their unique perspectives.
Thank you for listening,
- Dustin Kensrue
