John the Baptist was a bit of an outcast - he was raised in the desert, ate locust and honey, and wore a camel-hair garment. Why do you think God chose someone like John to be Jesus’ forerunner?

In Luke 3:3, Luke tells us John had a message of “repentance for the forgiveness of sins”. What is repentance? What does repentance look like in someone’s life? Can you tell if someone has truly repented? Why do you think churches struggle today to preach a message of repentance?

Read Isaiah 40:3-5 & Luke 3:4-6 in 2 different translations as a group (one of them being the passion translation). These verses talk very specifically about “preparing the way of the Lord.” Really focusing in on verses Luke 3:4-6, what kind of cutting, filling, straightening, and smoothing work has God been doing in your life? What does He still need to do? Why is this necessary preparation for us as disciples?

- What was your biggest takeaway from this weeks message? What is one specific thing that God is speaking to you through this study?
- What are some characteristics of Mary that stand out to you and why? Why do you think God chose her? Put yourself in her shoes, what were some possible issues that might come up in Mary’s life when she submits to God’s plan?
- The angel Gabriel was sent to let Mary know that she found favor with God and would give birth to Jesus. After a question or two, she replied, “I am the Lord’s servant, let it all be as you say.” For Mary to say “I am Your servant” is a great sign of surrender. For Mary to have such a great surrender, it meant she would need to trust God with her entire life. Thinking about surrender: where, how, or what do you want/need to surrender to God in this season of your life? What is holding you back from such surrender? Why is it so hard to surrender ALL of our lives to God?
- Mary is magnifying God because he has done great things for her. Name several great things that God has done for you.
- Read Isaiah 9:6-7 & then read Luke 1:21-33. Isaiah prophecies who Jesus will be and the angel gives a four-fold prophetic message about Jesus. When you read these verses, what part about the prophecy are you most looking for in Jesus?

What area of your life do you feel "stuck" in? Have you ever heard the phrase, "In order to go where you've never been, you have to do something you've never done"? If you want to get unstuck this year, you are going to have to ALLOW God to lead you in places you have never been before. What are you going to do differently this year to get "unstuck"?

James says that we should pray whether we are in trouble, happy, or sick. Do you find that you pray more when you are happy and thankful or when you are in need? Why do you think that is?

James’ instructions about prayer come right after a passage about how we must be patient in times of suffering. Do you see any connection between the two? Why discuss prayer and patience at the same time?

James 5:16 tells us to confess our sins to each other. Why do you think he encourages us to confess our sins to one another? Isn’t God the one forgives?
