Okay, so what is Thuringwethil's story, anyway? How did she die, but also, how did she live? And what does this tell us about Sauron?
And now to plan one of Sauron's big moments: his rise and fall in the Luthien story. And what happened to Thuringwethil anyway?
The day has come! It is finally time to embark on the first-ever film adaptation of the story of Beren and Luthien. Let's do this!
Join us for the final session of Season 5, as we discuss the end of the Dagor Bragollach and the Duel of Fingolfin and Morgoth.
It's time for Episode 12, the first half of the Dagor Bragollach. Join us as the flames sweep across northern Beleriand!
Tonight we discuss the Frame story! Incanus in Harad. Will Gandalf smoke a hookah and ride a white oliphaunt? What is the origin story of the Mouth of Sauron? All this and more...
Tonight, the heart of Season 5: the Athrabethof Finrod and Andreth! This is awesome stuff.
Silm Film 5-36 (08/12/21) Sets, Locations, and Props Corey Olsen and Dave Kale are joined by Marie Prosser for a post-production session to discuss the possible Locations, Set Design choices, and Props that will be used in Season 5, based on listener suggestions on the messageboards. Location scouting for the Forest of Brethil, Nan Elmoth, Tarn Aeluin, and the Ascar-Gelion confluence results in choices moving forward. We also discuss the appearance of the leadership symbols of the Three Houses of the Edain - the stole of the Wise for the House of Bëor, the spear of Haleth, and the Dragon-helm of Dor-lómin. forums.signumuniversity.org
Silm Film 5-35 (07/29/21) Corey Olsen and Dave Kale are joined by Nick Palazzo to continue discussing Episode 10. While the story of Aredhel's death is told in detail by Tolkien, the topic of this session is the most controversial adaptation choice of Season 5 - Fingolfin's vision that will lead to his fruitless big push against Angband and his eventual duel with Morgoth at the end of the season. An appearance by a surprise character and the influence of Men on the story make the final form of this episode new to everyone. forums.signumuniversity.org
Silm Film 5-34 (7/8/21) Season 5 Episode 10: Bound Together Corey Olsen and Dave Kale are joined by Marie Prosser to discuss the final episode for Aredhel as she returns to Gondolin with her son Maeglin, and Turgon decides to implement the first execution. [Fingolfin's vision after the double wedding in Dor-lomin signals his shift from maintaining the Siege indefinitely to an attempt to take a more active approach as the season heads towards the Dagor Bragollach.] https://mythgard.org/silmfilm/
Silm Film 5-33 (7/1/21) Season 5 Casting Session Corey Olsen and Dave Kale are joined by special guest Håkan Walles to discuss the results of the casting poll and determine the actors who will represent the new characters in Season 5. First they determine the casting for the Haradrim in the Third Age Frame story, then for the Edain in Beleriand, and finally the elvish characters. https://mythgard.org/silmfilm/
Silm Film 5-32 (6/10/21) Season 5 Episode 9: A Brief Flame Corey Olsen and Dave Kale are joined by Nick Palazzo to discuss Episode 9 of Season 5, in which Andreth and Aegnor fall in love, but the rom com goes off the rails when the couple is unable to overcome the obstacles facing them. The Noldor have a council in Dorthonion to discuss the Siege, and Maedhros involves the Dwarves in a construction project at Himring as we gear up for the end of the Season. https://mythgard.org/silmfilm/
Silm Film 5-31 (5/20/2021) Season 5 Episode 8: To the Horizon Corey Olsen, joined by Dave Kale, Nick Palazzo, and Marie Prosser, discusses the Aredhel subplot from S05Ep07 as well as the first draft script for Episode 8. Aredhel and Eöl are engaged in a tug of war for the loyalty of their son Maeglin, who visits Nogrod. Andreth is introduced as a young woman of Nargothrond, and she visits Haleth and the Haladin in Brethil in a cultural exchange that will have lasting impact on the House of Bëor. Meanwhile, the discontented youths of Nargothrond get up to no good by throwing a bonfire party and plotting to steal horses. Luckily, the House of Bëor does not repeat the rebellion of the Noldor, and a non-violent solution to the problem is found. The House of Bëor moves to Ladros. https://mythgard.org/silmfilm/
Silm Film Session 5-30: Episode 7 - The Council of Estolad The Silmarillion Film Project is a theoretical adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Silmarillion into a long-running television show. Season 5 introduces Men to Beleriand and culminates in Fingolfin's duel with Morgoth after the Dagor Bragollach. In this session, Corey Olsen discusses the plot of Season 5 Episode 7. The scattered people of Estolad will finally emerge as the unified House of Hador. Bereg will be a voice of dissent at the Council, and Amlach will be impersonated by Sauron. Meanwhile, Aredhel is coming to realize how trapped in Nan Elmoth she is. https://mythgard.org/silmfilm/
Silm Film 5-29 (4/22/2021) Season 5 Culture of the Edain Corey Olsen discusses the culture of the Edain in Season 5, joined by Nick Palazzo and Marie Prosser. The Houses of Bëor, Haleth, and Hador migrate throughout Beleriand over the course of the season, come into contact with the elves, and develop unique signs of leadership and material culture. Also, decisions are made about the history of Narsil! https://mythgard.org/silmfilm/
Silm Film 5-28 (4/8/2021) Season 5 Episode 6: Freedom Corey Olsen discusses Season 5 Episode 6, the action-packed escape from Angband! He is joined by Nick Palazzo, Script Editor. Also, Haleth kills Tevildo to claim the Forest of Brethil for her people. https://mythgard.org/silmfilm/
In which we discuss Haleth among the giant spiders, Gandalf in Harad, and more about the differences between Elves and Men.
Episode 5 tonight -- Let's talk about the unfriendship of the Green Elves (not to mention the Grey!).
Tonight: Harad! Let's do some world-building and figuring out what Harad is like (or one corner of it, anyway).
Tonight we discuss the criteria for casting the new characters for Season 5. What are we looking for in Humans?
Tonight we discuss the script for Episode 4: the battle at the Stockade, and the emergence of Haleth!
Join us tonight as return to discussing our Episode Outlines. We will discuss the B plot of Episode 2 and then Episode 3, which will deal centrally with the Elves' discovery of the Gift of Men.
Tonight we resume our SilmFilm discussions discussing what creative works we would like to commission in conjunction with this season, with a heavy focus on the musical score.
Silm Film 5-07 (06/18/20) House of Hador Corey Olsen, Dave Kale, and Trish Lambert continue the pre-production process of developing season-long storylines for the Men of Beleriand. The House of Hador does not have the devoted relationship to the Elves that the House of Bëor do, nor are they as isolationist as the House of Haleth. In this session, the identity of the House of Hador is discussed, and a unique story for this house emerges. The roles of Hador and Amlach are discussed. https://mythgard.org/silmfilm/
Silm Film 5-06 (06/04/20) House of Bëor Corey Olsen and Trish Lambert continue the pre-production process of developing season-long storylines for the Men of Beleriand. The migration of the Men into Beleriand is not fully developed as a story, so we will need to create coherent storylines for each House, with characters that we care about. In this session, the goal is to decide how to handle Bëor and his relationship with the Elves of Nargothrond. Amlach's story is also discussed. forums.signumuniversity.org
Silm Film 5-05 (05/21/2020) Corey Olsen, Dave Kale, and Trish Lambert discuss the human stories in Season 5. Pre-production moves into discussing season-long storylines. For the Men, we will be focusing on stories for several 'hero' characters to embody the story of each House of the Edain. Potential condensed family trees are discussed. The focus of this session is on the storyline of Haleth and the Haladin, as they are the most isolated of the three Houses of the Edain. https://mythgard.org/silmfilm/

For the first episode of Season 3, we are going to focus on the rebellion of the Noldor, including the debate in the torch-lit square of Tirion that culminates in the Oath of Fëanor.
As we get closer to discussing the Season 3 episode structure, we need to discuss some of the creative challenges we will face over the upcoming season and answer questions like: Why do the elves decide to live in a cave? Is ice the only dangerous thing in the Helcaraxë? And what exactly is Angband like?
Digging deeper into Season 3, we discuss the frame narrative that will surround the primary plot and story arc of the season.

Now that we’ve worked through the details of each episode, we will solidify the season-long arcs, the frame narrative, and the subplots of our major villains.
In which we discuss the major themes of the show: the tragedy of loss and tragic falls of the main characters we have been developing throughout the last two seasons.
In Episode 10 of the season, we bring Fingolfin and Fëanor into conflict – finally revealing Fëanor for the jerk he really is.
After a season and a half, we’re finally ready to introduce the things at the center of the story: the Silmarils! Plus, we get ready for the next episode, where the central conflict of the season will come to a head.
By the eighth episode of the season, we are getting ready for a bit of a twist as we prepare for the trial of Melkor and shift towards the real conflict of the season.
This episode focuses on the Noontide of Valinor, and in particular on the growth in Fëanor’s skill as a master smith, with lots of foreshadowing of him smithing with the red glow of forge-fire on his face.
In the sixth episode of Season 2, we work out the details of Fëanor’s birth and the death of his mother Miriel, establishing parallels between the two and laying the foundation’s for Fëanor’s doom.
In this session, we revisit the Thingol and Melian story, take a hard look at Sauron’s posse, and map out the structure of Season 2, Episode 5, which focuses on the arrival of the Noldor and Vanyar.
In the fourth episode of Season 2, we show the developing power struggle between Gothmog and Mairon, and the return of Lenwë to the Avari.
Episode 3 of Season 2 will focus on the debate amongst the elves about whether to remain in Middle-earth or head over to Valinor.
Discussion and outline of the first episode of Season 2, starting with Arwen’s frame story, which leads into the story of the awakening of the elves on the shores of Cuivienen.
Discussion about the linguistics of the Silmarillion, the continuing the Big Picture stuff for Season 2, and the sundering of races, as well as material culture and other markers.
Deciding on general outline for season 2 – not in detail, as we will map out episode-by-episode plots later.
Discussing the big-picture overview of the season, starting with the the awakening of the Elves at Cuivienen (from their point of view) and ending with the Darkening of Valinor.
We bring on some additional panelists this week to discuss script outlines and fill in the holes left in our episodic discussions. Guest panelists include Karita Alexander, Brian Fattorini, Nick Palazzo, and Marie Prosser.
Joining us for a discussion of the musical score is John DiBartolo of the Lonely Mountain Band. We also will listen to clips of proposed character themes from composer Philip Menzies.
We review the results of our casting poll from Session 16 and discuss what we’d like to see our newly cast … uh, cast … wear.
Following up on our casting conversation, this time we’re talking about how we want things to look. What type of forests should fill Valinor? What architecture styles should we use for the Valar (and the elves who copy them)? What other visual considerations do we need to make?
Now that we’ve mapped out the characters, plot and action of the 13-episode first season, we get to decide who we’d like to see play the parts! This casting call includes a discussion forum component, so be sure to join in the fun!
In the 2-hour season finale, the culmination of the strife amongst the Valar comes to a head with three councils, two summonings, and an epic battle that will establish the Platonic ideal for all future battles.
We’ve gone too long without discussing the Mûmakil in the room: those darn orcs. In this session, we stop kicking that tin ration packaging down the road and deal with the inevitable.
In this episode, we explore why Aulë does what he does, showing parallels with Melkor and planting the seeds of impatience for the Coming of the Children of Iluvatar amongst the Valar.
In the final episode of Riddles in the Dark (really), Tolkien Professor Corey Olsen and co-hosts Dave Kale and Trish Lambert go over the extended edition of the final film in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit trilogy. Emotions run high as they consider the tying up (or not) of loose ends and the various arcs that may or may not have worked.
Subtitle: If you have a Balrog, you don’t need a cat. In which we start to link together all of the subplots and develop the first multi-episode story arc.
In Episode 9, we begin to look at the downfall of various Ainur, setting the stage for the three rebellions that happen over the rest of the season: Aulë’s rebellion, Mairon’s (Sauron’s) rebellion, and Ossë’s rebellion.
In the eighth episode of Season 1, we focus on the Two Trees, showing how they help to beautify Valinor – and instill jealousy and devious plans in Melkor.
In today’s session, we come up with a new tagline for the SilmFilm Project: “It’s better than Jackson could have come up with.” Also, we talk about the establishment of Valinor and provide a view of the Valar settling into their new homes.
After wrapping up some loose ends from the previous session, we shape episode 6 into something of a “whodunit” murder mystery, with the victims being the Lamps of the Valar.
In Episode 5, we discuss the decision to create the lamps and the introduction of Tulkas
In the fourth episode of Season 1, we determine how Melkor meets the other Valar and focus on the end of the Ainulindalë and Iluvatar’s conversation with Ulmo.
We continue to discuss central themes of the season, in particular focusing on Melkor – including what the heck to call him (as well as others who experience name changes in The Silmarillion, like Sauron).
Today we are figuring out the content of the frame story and the Silmarillion story for episode 2 and how to tie it all together.
It’s time to discuss the Music of the Ainur, one of the most thought-provoking and beautiful stories Tolkien wrote. This is a central core concept that, while it’s detached from the “main” story of The Silmarillion, it’s always there in the background.
We continue our discussion about the overall narrative of Season 1, as well as focus on the elements of the frame story that will encompass the show.
We will begin by discussing the overall plot of the first season and the major events that we want to occur during the season, including the Music of the Ainur, creation of Arda, the making of the Two Lamps, and the arrival of the Valar.
Adaptation has been a topic that has intrigued many Mythgardians, including Signum University President Corey Olsen (also known as The Tolkien Professor). From music and art to film to The Lord of the Rings Online (LOTRO) video game, the inspiration that the works of J.R.R. Tolkien have offered continues to be of interest to Corey and his podcast listeners. In a recent Tolkien Chat, Corey took on another sort of adaptation: the new Middle-earth Lore Series. A brainchild of Joel “Andang” Shepherd, the director of the Players Alliance (a Mythgard Institute partner) and the force behind the weekly LOTRO Players News podcast, the series looks at the history of Middle-earth from an unusual angle. Using locations such as The Shire, Bree-land and Rivendell as anchors, the episodes relates the history of each place and the people who inhabited it. And those places and people are all inside LOTRO. The first episode of the series, “The Shire,” was recently released, and to celebrate the launch. Corey talked to Andang about how he came up with the series idea, who its target audience is, and what the experience shooting within LOTRO is like. Andang shared many observations that are universal across all forms of adaptation.
In the final episode in this season, we will attempt to lay out a map for the whole show, season by season.
We will continue tackling big issues, including chronology, language style and use of narration.
We will discuss some of the critical issues that will lay the foundation of the adaptation, including character depiction, music and magic.
We will explain what we are doing and what we are not doing in this project. We will explain the general framework of our episodes and give a high level overview of what we will cover in Season 0. We will conclude the episode (as we will conclude all our episodes) with a question for listeners to discuss in the forum prior to a final decision at the start of the next episode.
In the Lord of the Rings Online, Mythgard gathers at Ales and Tales to celebrate Gondorian New Year and the 7th Anniversary of the Lonely Mountain Band kinship. Corey's talk is on Frodo and Sauron at the Cracks of Doom: What Were They Thinking?
In the final episode of a long journey there and back again, Tolkien Professor Corey Olsen and co-hosts Dave Kale and Trish Lambert wind up the riddle run-through for Year 3. It's all over but the score tabulation, and we say farewell to Riddles in the Dark. But the road goes ever on, and our intrepid threesome are gearing up to launch a new podcast series--focused on adapting The Silmarillion to screen.
