In this Podcast, Dr. Joseph Sharpe, Chief Medical Officer at Ascension Saint Thomas Behavioral Health Hospital talks types of depression. He discusses some of the things that contribute to the condition and some ways to build a strategy to support your mental health. He talks about the links to physical health and mental health, and lists four areas that we can work on to promote good mental health. They include good sleep hygiene, proper exercise (including how much, how often, and at what level of exercise), diet, and Rest, Relaxation and Socialization. All of those, Dr. Sharpe says, are key factors to supporting and promoting good mental health.
He says one main takeaway would be to, "Stop comparing yourself to other people, and focus on yourself. Where are YOU? How do YOU feel?" Anna Marie discusses fire safety with Jamie Meltion, Fire and Life Safety Educator, from the Franklin Fire Department.

Jamie stresses the importance of working smoke alarms in a household to protect your family from fires because smoke from a fire can incapacitate a person in as quickly as thirty seconds. Jamie says that it's important to replace the batteries in your alarms every year, even if the smoke alarms are hardwired. Also, most alarms need to be replaced every ten years. You can check the back of the alarm to see the date that it was manufactured. Working smoke detectors are so critical because most fatalities from house fires occur between the hours of 11 pm and 6 am in houses that didn't have working smoke alarms.

They also discuss safety tips for holiday cooking since the season is not that far off.. Thanksgiving is the number one day of the year for house fires and that's because more people are cooking on Thanksgiving and 40% of house fires are caused by cooking. Most of these fires are caused by distractions and forgetting something is cooking. Jamie says that a tip to help with this is to either turn off the stove if you have to leave it, or take a cooking utensil with you as a reminder.

The most important thing to remember if your house is on fire is to get outside to your designated safety place, stay outside and don't go back in for anything, and once you're safely outside of the house call 911.

Anna has Steve Traylor from A+ Home Inspections and Amy Little from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.

Doctors estimate there are 20,000 to 30,000 deaths from lung cancer caused by radon every year. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking. We don't hear much about radon because nationwide it only affects one out of fifteen homes, but the EPA shows that it affects half of homes in Williamson, Davidson and surrounding counties.

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that seeps through cracks and rocks in the ground. When a house is built over this it gets trapped in the basements, crawl spaces, etc. Radon is odorless and colorless so there's no way of knowing your house has it without a test. The good news is that radon is a fixable problem.

What a team we have working to spread breast cancer awareness here in Middle Tennessee!

In this interview, meet Dr. Richard Martin (yes, Ricky Martin), a Doctor of Hematology, Medical Oncology at Tennessee Oncology. He talks about new technologies to detect and fight breast cancer, he's part of the American Cancer Society's Men Wear Pink campaign, and he's spreading the word that the BEST outcomes after a breast cancer diagnosis, come from early detection.

Dr. Martin also says that because of the COVID pandemic, many people waited to get medical care, and when cancers were found, they were more advanced, which means for the first time in years, we may see death rates from breast cancer go back up.

Dr. Martin says as we keep researching, detecting earlier, and coming up with new treatments, we're making progress, but MUCH more needs to be done. That's why he's part of the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.

Many of us experienced at least a measure of isolation during the recent Pandemic. But for some people, that isolation is every day. In this interview, our guest Fett from Azalea Music Group talks about the way the recording industry has changed, and why it's important to get more women into the business.
He also talks about a women-only clinic this fall, called "Empowering Women in Audio".
Here are some of the reasons he and his wife Nancy hold the clinics:

  1. The role of women in music production and the recording arts is changing very quickly.
It used to be an almost exclusively “man’s game” — especially in the studio. Until a few years ago, with a few notable exceptions, nearly all recording engineers and producers were men. Now, that’s no longer the case. The business has truly opened up for women.
  2. Women bring an entirely different sensibility to the studio and the music production process than men do.
That’s not “guy-bashing;” it’s simply an observation. It’s not that men or women are “better” in the studio — they’re just different. Some of it is biological (women have different hearing sensitivity and frequency range than men do, for example), but it’s also cultural. Women bring a certain empathy and insight to the music and to the recording process that men don’t. And their recordings and production actually sound different as a result.
  3. When women get together to work exclusively with other women, there’s an entirely different dynamic in the room than when they are working together with men.
Again, that’s not intended to dis the guys; it’s simply that the whole “gender factor” isn’t present when it’s a women-only crowd. The result is that women are able to simply be themselves, and different things happen. And the results for the music can be fantastic.

We've had to navigate through so many stressors the past few years, that we sometimes forget to do what we NEED to do to stay mentally healthy.
Dr. Sherrod helps us lay out a plan of action that includes improving mental health by making sure we're working on physical health (getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, eating healthy/nourishing foods, and knowing when to reach out for help).
