The Knicks claim they have a plan, but it sure didn't seem like it after several moves on draft night that saw them trade away their pick and unload the expiring contract of point guard Kemba Walker. The Knicks said -- via press release -- that they chose to create salary cap space to be able to go after free agents and amassed first-round picks to be in better position to make trades going forward. Believe that if you want. The Yankees split a four-game series with the Houston Astros, getting no-hit on Saturday and getting game-winning hits from Aaron Judge on Thursday and Sunday. The Los Angeles Rams had to comeback in the fourth quarter, but quarterback Matthew Stafford connected with WR Cooper Kupp for a late touchdown that gave the Rams a 23-20 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals in Super Bowl LVI. The Nets traded James Harden to the Philadelphia 76ers in the hours before the NBA trading deadline. The Mets are planning to bring back Old Timers Day this season.
Hosted by Rob Leonard and Tim Leonard. Tim seems certain the Rams will cover the 4 1/2-point spread against the Broncos to win Super Bowl LVI. The reason was simple: Rob went with the Bengals. Former Miami Dolphins head coach Brian Flores has filed a lawsuit against the NFL, accusing the league of systemic racism and discriminatory hiring practices. The Washington Football Team will be known as the Commanders going forward. The Metropolitan Division won the NHL All-Star tournament, defeating the Central Division, 5-3, in the final. The NBA trade deadline is Thursday.
Hosted by Rob Leonard and Tim Leonard. This week they talk about the new GM and new Head Coach for the Giants. Super Bowl teams decided.
Hosted by Rob Leonard and Tim Leonard. This week we remember one of the lynchpins of the New York Islanders Dynasty, Clark Gillies, Crazy weekend for NFL playoff football. Should the New York Mets retire Keith Hernandez's number?
Super Wildcard Weekend had its share of drama as the NFL playoffs got started. The 49ers held on for a 23-17 win over the Cowboys after an ill-advised run by Cowboys QB Dak Prescott, who then could not stop the clock before time expired. The Bengals defense held on to defeat the Raiders. The Bills destroyed the Patriots, 47-17, and the Chiefs and Buccaneers both won easily. The Giants fired head coach Joe Judge on Tuesday after two woeful seasons and a a couple of weeks of poor play and chaos. Kevin Durant sprained his MCL, which means the Nets' Big Three won't play together for at least a month. Tim called the Premier League's decision to postpone the Tottenham-Arsenal match "horrendous" because Arsenal has just one case of Covid-19. Arsenal being short players was due to the club's own mismanagement.
Giants, Jets need overhauls; Sports betting now legal in NY
The Giants and Jets both lost their final games of the season, leaving both teams with 4-13 records. The Giants, who scored a total of 26 points in their last four games, were beaten by the Washington Football Team, 22-7. The Giants again find themselves in a position where a complete overhaul is needed. GM Dave Gettleman and head coach Joe Judge both could find themselves out of a job. The Buffalo Bills sacked Jets quarterback Zach Wilson nine times in a 27-10 victory. The best news is that the Jets have the fourth and 10th picks in the upcoming NFL Draft, while the Giants have the fifth and seventh picks. Sports betting has been legalized in New York. Rob and Tim discussed the ramifications of that decision and also the possible pitfalls. The Yankees have hired Rachel Balkkovec as the manager for their Class-A Tampa Tarpons. Balkovec becomes the first woman to manage a minor-league team on a full-time basis.
The Jets played one of their better games, but couldn't hold on to the lead and lost to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 28-24. As he has done so many times in his career, quarterback Tom Brady threw a touchdown pass in the final minute for the deciding score. The Jets dropped to 4-12 and should wind up with two Top 10 picks in the upcoming NFL Draft. Rob and Tim remembered former Oakland Raiders coach and legendary broadcaster John Madden, who passed away last week at age 85. Madden is someone who had as much impact on the NFL as any person in league history. Madden was elected to the Hall of Fame and also has the most popular video game in history named after him. The Islanders won two games last week, but won't play until Jan. 13 due to NHL postponements. The Giants embarrassed themselves in a 29-3 loss to the Bears.
Despite missing 20 players to Covid protocols, the Jets held on to defeat the Jacksonville Jaguars, 26-21. Zach Wilson rushed for 91 yards, a team-record for a quarterback. That included a 52-yard touchdown run. Braxton Berrios had a 103-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and Wilson hit offensive lineman Conor McDermott for a late touchdown. After taking a week's break for the holiday, the NHL returns tonight, with most of its teams feeling the effects of Covid and with dozens of games already having been postponed. The NHL will not allow their players to go to the Olympics, and will use the break built in to the schedule to make up games. The NBA saw 200 players placed in Covid protocol just in the month of December. The Giants were destroyed by the Eagles.
Former Yankees manager Buck Showalter agreed to a three-year contract to manage the New York Mets. Rob and Tim discussed what the Showalter Era could look like, and the possibility that Carlos Beltran will be one of his coaches. Covid-19 is back and hitting every league hard. The NFL had to move games after more than 100 players tested positive last week. The Brooklyn Nets had 10 player in Covid protocols and had to postpone games. The Nets even welcomed back Kyrie Irving to play road games only, since the unvaccinated guard can't play in New York City due to vaccine mandates. Canada already has reduced capacity for NHL games to 50-percent in an effort to reduce the spread. The Islanders defeated the Bruins, but lost to former goaltender Robin Lehner and the Vegas Golden Knights in a shootout. The Jets and Giants both lost. Again.
New York City FC had to go to overtime and a penalty kick shootout before defeating the Portland Timbers to win its first Major League Soccer title, the first championship for a New York team since 2011. NYCFC goalkeeper Sean Johnson stopped two Portland penalty kicks. Zach Parise scored a shorthanded goal -- his first goal for the New York Islanders -- to give the Isles a 3-2 lead on the way to a 4-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Saturday. It was the Islanders' first win at UBS Arena. The Mets manager search continues. The Jets and Giants both suffered embarrassing losses.
Former Brooklyn Dodgers first baseman and New York Mets manager Gil Hodges finally is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame along with Jim Kaat, Minnie Minoso, Tony Oliva and Buck O'Neil. Rob and Tim discuss what the Major League Baseball players and owners want after the owners locked out the players. The Giants and Jets both lost. NYCFC won the Eastern Conference title and will play for the MLS Cup on Saturday.
Mets sign three free agents to bolster line-up. Will they sign Max Scherzer? Jets and Giants win, Islanders hit by Covid-19. Hosted by Rob Leonard and Tim Leonard
Tim Leonard appears on the afternoon edition of Monday's Sports talk (live from RC Dugan's) and defends the Baseball writers who vote for the Hall Of Fame inductees.
Islanders lose UBS opener After opening the season with 13 consecutive game son the road, the Islanders finally got to play a home game in their brand new UBS Arena, but wound up losing to the Calgary Flames, 5-2. The following night, the Islanders -- missing six players to Covid protocols and another to injury -- lost to the Toronto Maple Leafs, 3-0. It's not time for Islanders fans to panic, but the team is in last place and has lost six in a row. The Jets lost another game, this time to the awful Miami Dolphins. Mets fans were furious with pitcher Noah Syndergaard for accepting a one-year, $21 million contract from the Angels.
Talking Jets with J.P. Pelzman of Forbes.com
The Jets found out that QB Mike White just might be...ordinary in a 45-17 loss to the Buffalo Bills. For the fourth straight game, the Jets defense was ineffective and abused as the team fell to 2-7. Rob and Tim talked about both sides of the ball with J.P. Pelzman, the Jets beat writer for Forbes.com. We're less than a week away from the Islanders finally playing a home game at UBS Arena. Will some home cooking give the Islanders the boost they need to move up the Metropolitan Division standings? The United States men defeated Mexico, 2-0, in a World Cup qualifying match. The Hofstra men's soccer team beat Elon, 3-2, to win the CAA tournament and earn a bid to the NCAA tournament.
The Odd Couple. Giants upset Raiders; Is Sorokin Isles' No. 1?
The Nets have won five straight. The Mets extended Qualifying Offers to free agents Michael Conforto and Noah Syndergaard. Knicks slowing down
Hosted by Rob Leonard and Tim Leonard
Tottenham gets rid of its coach, Knicks looking very good, Jets QB Mike White does something that a Jets QB hasn't been done in 21 years. Hosted by Rob Leonard and Tim Leonard
Giants defeat Panthers; Two shutouts for Isles
Giants QB Daniel Jones threw a touchdown pass and made an acrobatic leaping catch to lead the Giants to a 25-3 win over the Carolina Panthers. Rookie LB Azeez Ojulari has 25. sacks in the team's best defensive effort of the season. The Islanders got back-to-back shutouts from goaltender Ilya Sorokin to defeat the Phoenix Coyotes, 3-0, and the Vegas Golden Knights, 2-0, as the team's 13-game road trip continued. The Knicks went to double-overtime to outlast the Celtic on Opening Night and then made a franchise-record 24 three-pointers in a rout of the Orlando Magic.
Aaron Judge singled home Tyler Wade to give the Yankees a 1-0 win over Tampa Bay, which clinched a spot in the American League wildcard game against the Red Sox. It was a rare football day with the Giants and Jets both winning in overtime. Daniel Jones threw for a career-high 402 yards to lead the Giants to a 27-21 victory over the Saints. Zach Wilson led the Jets, throwing for 297 yards in a 27-24 win over the Titans. The NWSL is reeling after North Carolina Courage coach Paul Riley was accused of sexual coercion by two of his players. NWSL commissioner Lisa Baird resigned and Riley was fired by the Courage.
A week ago, three Mets players were embroiled in controversy for their thumbs-down gesture to mock their own fans. Two of those players involved -- Javier Baez and Francisco Lindor -- led the team to seven straight wins to jump back into the NL East race. The Yankees went from a 13-game winning streak to 2-6 in their last eight games. The slump seemingly has ended any chance they had to catch first-place Tampa Bay. Over at the US Open, teenagers are making a splash and upsets have been happening, as Naomi Osaka and Ashleigh Barty both were eliminated.
We discovered on Sunday that Mets players Francisco Lindor, Javier Baez and Kevin Pillar were giving a thumbs-down gesture in response to fans booing them. It's never a good idea to take on the fans, especially for Lindor, who signed a 10-year, $341 million contract in the spring to be the face of the Mets. The Yankees ran their winning streak to 13 games before it was broken by Oakland. But during that span, the Bombers gained just three games on the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays. In soccer, Lionel Messi made his debut with PSG, Cristiano Ronaldo was sold to Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur took over first place in the Premier League.
The Yankees are one of the hottest teams in baseball, putting together a nine-game winning streak that has them 20 games over .500 in in control of the American League wildcard race. With his team struggling, Mets owner Steve Cohen criticized his team's hitting via Twitter. The Mets are 2-8 in their last 10 games as the Atlanta Braves have taken a commanding lead in the NL East. Jets QB Zach Wilson was outstanding, going completing nine of 11 passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns in a 23-14 win over the Green Bay Packers. Former Rangers great Rod Gilbert died at 80.
The Yankees thought they had produced a stunning comeback in the Field of Dreams game, but Tim Anderson homered off Zack Britton to give the White Sox a 9-8 victory. But the Yankees won the next two games to win the series and are 12-4 in their last 16 games. The Mets continue to stumble, getting swept by the Dodgers over the weekend. The Jets and Giants played a lackluster exhibition game, though Jets quarterback Zach Wilson looked good, going 6-for-9 for 63 yards in two drives. Rob and Tim reviewed the moves the Knicks have made in the offseason, including a shrewd extension of forward Julius Randle and the acquisition of point guard Kemba Walker.
Despite having multiple players sidelined due to Covid-19, the Yankees keep winning and gaining ground on the Red Sox in the AL East. Meanwhile, the Mets suddenly can't hit and have fallen out of first place and are behind both the Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves. Former Colts and Broncos QB Peyton Manning gave a fantastic speech at the NFL Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Sunday. Barcelona legend Lionel Messi cried at a press conference to announce he was leaving the club -- while his agent was negotiating a two-year deal with Paris St. Germain.
The United States women's soccer team, a prohibitive favorite to win a gold medal, crashed out of contention in a shocking 1-0 loss to Canada early Monday morning. The Knicks didn't do well at the NBA Draft, twice trading down and gathering future draft picks to help in a possible trade for Portland guard Damian Lillard. The Nets picked up a scorer and some size. The Yankees and Mets both made some noise at the trade deadline, with the Yankees acquiring 1B Anthony Rizzo, OF Joey Gallo and SP Andrew Heaney. The Mets made a splash, dealing for SS Javier Baez.
The NFL wants all of its players to be vaccinated against Covid-19, to the extent that commissioner Roger Goodell has said teams may have to forfeit games and players would lose a game check if a game has to be cancelled due to a Covid-019 outbreak. The Mets went 5-2 last week to add a couple of games to their NL East lead, while the Yankees suffered another heart-breaking loss thanks to analytics and a worn-out bullpen. The Olympics have started with mixed results for the United States, as women's soccer was awful in a 3-0 loss to Sweden and swimmer Katie Ledecky had to settle for silver in the 400 freestyle.
The Mets survived an embarrassing play and Michael Conforto belted a two-run home run in the ninth inning for a 7-6 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates that allowed them to maintain a two-game lead over the Phillies in the NL East. Six players went on the Covid-19 IL -- including RF Aaron Judge -- but the Yankees took two of three from the Red Sox, with Gerrit Cole and Jameson Taillon pitching the Bombers to victory. The New York Islanders traded defenseman Nick Leddy to the Detroit Red Wings and the Milwaukee Bucks are one game away from an NBA title.
The Euro 2020 semifinals and final went exactly as Tim told listeners they would on last week's show, as Italy had to go to penalty kicks against England to win the title. Major League Baseball has reached the All-Star Break with the Mets hanging on to first place in the NL East and the Yankees continuing to struggle with inconsistency in the AL East. The Tampa Bay Lightning clinched the Stanley Cup in five games, another thing Tim predicted correctly.
Rob and Tim talk about how the New York Yankees are not a playoff team after some embarrassing and humiliating losses last week, including losing two of three to the Mets. Some kind of shake-up is needed. Of course, the Mets winning two of three allowed them to remain in first place in the NL East. The least is 3 1/2 games, five in the all-important loss column. Mets fans were thrilled about the seventh inning rally that saw the Mets push six runs across the plate for a surprising 10-5 victory in the first of two games on Sunday. The Euro 2020 tournament has moved into the semifinals, with Italy facing Spain on Tuesday and England meeting Denmark on Wednesday. Striker Harry Kane scored two goals to lead England to a 4-0 victory over the Ukraine. Italy has been playing as well as any team in the tournament, and Tim picked them to upset England in the final. There also was a conversation about NIL, which stands for "Name-Image-Likeness" and how college athletes now have control of their own. Some athletes already have benefitted by signing endorsement deals for everything from cellphones to sweet tea. Surprisingly, the biggest beneficiary of this new rule is expected to be a gymnast at LSU, Olivia Dunne, who has 1.1 million followers on Instagram. Track and field also was discussed after the ridiculous one-month suspension of United States sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson after she tested positive for marijuana. Richardson will not be able to run in the 100-meter dash at the Tokyo Olympics because of the suspension, but, to her credit, she owned her actions and took full responsibility for what transpired.
Rob and Tim talk about the New York Islanders saving their season in Game 6, but ultimately seeing it end with a 1-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 7 of their Stanley Cup semifinal. Anthony Beauvillier scored in overtime to win Game 6, but the Islanders couldn't get the goal they needed in Game 7. Tim explained why the Yankees are a good team, but not really a contender this season. He also reminded Yankees fans that, if George Steinbrenner was still the owner, Aaron Boone would have been fired as the manager by now. Rob talked about the Mets and how they're still in first place in the NL East, mostly because the rest of the division is inept -- and under .500. There also was a discussion about the dope who caused a massive crash at the Tour de France, Serena Williams said she is skipping the Olympics and Euro 2020 continues.
Rob and Tim talk about defenseman Ryan Pulock becoming an instant legend for the Islanders by making a last-second save that clinched a 3-2 victory over Tampa Bay in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup semifinals. Tim compared Pulock's heroics to Derek Jeter's Flip Play for the Yankees. Pulock also was in the right place at the right time to make a spectacular, game-saving play. They also discussed the Nets disappointing overtime loss to the Milwaukee Bucks in Game 7 of the NBA's Eastern Conference semifinals. Kevin Durant nearly won the game in regulation, but his toes were on the three-point line when he made a late jumper. That sent the game to overtime and the Bucks outdueled the banged-up Nets. The Yankees won five of six last week and Gary Sanchez has been crushing the ball. The Mets have lost four of their last five but remain in first place in the NL East. Also, Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen had successful surgery to correct his heart ailment and was released from the hospital.
Rob and Tim talk about the Islanders eliminating the Boston Bruins and then coming up with an impressive win in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup semifinals against the reigning champion Tampa Bay Lightning. They also discussed the frightening moment from Euro 2020 when Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen collapsed on the field from cardiac arrest and had to be revived with CPR and a defibrillator. The Nets are in trouble against the Bucks in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Milwaukee won Games 3 and 4, and Nets guard Kyrie Irving suffered an ankle sprain in Game 4. James Harden already is sidelined with a hamstring strain, meaning the Nets face an uphill battle to keep their title hope alive. The Mets are putting some space between themselves and the rest of the NL East with interdivision games coming up over the next two weeks. The Yankees are 5-13 in their last 18 games. Back in the day, that would have led to someone being fired.
Rob and Tim talk about the Islanders facing a must-win Game 5 in their series against the Boston Bruins. Tim says winning consecutive games is the key to winning the series. The Nets were very convincing in their Game 1 win over the Milwaukee Bucks, even though the Nets lost point guard James Harden to a hamstring injury in the first minute of the game. How will Harden's injury impact the rest of the series? The Mets remain in first place in the National League East, but we are seeing historic greatness from Jacob deGrom, whose ERA stands at a microscopic 0.62. The Yankees are slumping and showing they can't hit. Too many players are too worried about hitting home runs, rather than making contact and getting basehits. It's an issue across the sport that is making baseball unwatchable. Naomi Osaka withdrew from the French Open, citing issues with depression.
Rob and Tim talk about the Knicks underachieving against the Atlanta Hawks, as well as the Islanders knocking off the top seed Pittsburgh Penguins before losing Game 1 of the East Division final to the Boston Bruins. The Mets have won four in a row and are clinging to first place despite a maelstrom of injuries, while the Yankees struggled and were swept by the lowly Detroit Tigers. Tim also had something to say about bonehead NBA fans misbehaving since being allowed back in arenas.
