It happened after a long day. It was like...11pm, I was tired, laying down on my sofa, ready to go to bed. Checking in messages and stuff on my smartphone. And for whatever reason, I mechanically opened Linkedin and started browsing publications, which I very rarely do… even in the daytime. Scrolling down a couple of times. And here it was, the perfect trap, in my feed. Of course, I fell into it…

“Things have never been so good for humanity” “There’s never been a better time to be alive” “We’ve never had it so good than right now”. These couple of lines are very meaningful because when we accept this narrative as a truth, we open the door to a legion of story monsters that invade culture and society’s common sense.

In connection to this episode I am featuring the work of Scott Listfield, who’s known for his paintings featuring a lone exploratory astronaut lost in a landscape cluttered with pop culture icons, corporate logos, and tongue-in-cheek science fiction references.

These couple of lines are very meaningful because when we accept this narrative as a truth, we open the door to a legion of story monsters that invade culture and society’s common sense.

Many of us are experiencing some form of generational trauma. Psychic legacies are often passed on through unconscious cues or affective messages that flow between adult and child. Sometimes anxiety falls from one generation to the next through the stories that are told.

Here again, the artistic practice can help. This week we dive into the work of Enam Gbewonyo, a cosmic British Ghanaian Artist and Curator who clearly figured out how to deal with this! Last month, I heard that the future belongs to the youth of the world. Would you agree?

It feels like the youth is playing an important role indeed in the last year of climate mobilisation, with the school strikes etc. but in practice: how influential are young leaders in the boardrooms of the world? Are they even there to begin with?

It was time to bring someone with field experience and a long list of ideas on the topic.

Over the last few years at Coalition Wild, Crista Valentino trained over a thousand young leaders in 107 countries to unleash their potential to drive action projects in their community.

Youth’s voice in decision making is a favorite topic of hers and I brought challenging questions,

like “why are we marching for climate exactly?” or “Where do we expect serious answers come from” “How come so many organisations have become obsolete?”. Then she flipped this into a vibrant live therapy session I sure didn’t expect.

Once more, I was reminded about how complex it is to change your mind. But how necessary!

I’ve always had a fascination for them, knowing they are at the very top of their game, able to coordinate a movement of 80 expert musicians and deliver a performance that is not only extremely precise, coordinated and tight, but one that can also take audiences into another dimension. We must be able to learn something from these guys!?

Across cultures, people don’t laugh about the same things. Can dramatic events be made fun of? Where is the limit? How to handle black humour? And what can satire do for social change?

As the new composition of EU institutions is taking shape, I recalled this great discussion with ex-VP of the European Parliament Heidi Hautala, in her kitchen, after a long winter day in Brussels. If you haven’t heard it yet it’s a good moment to dive in.

It’s a positive story. Across the Amazon, alliances of indigenous people are becoming more and more effective. How addicted are we to sugar? coffee? salt?

How come some psychoactive substances are heavily criminalized and some others, are widely encouraged through capitalistic market dynamics and enabling policies?

The rest is taking over the West.

This week I learnt that change in emerging markets is to a great extent driven by entrepreneurs and startups who are shaking markets from the bottom up, often threatening industry and public services with product and service disruptions that simply do a better job than what established players have offered so far. Even NGOs can see the rug pulled from under their feet. There must be a reason for it!

How are you thinking around risk?

Are you a high-risk high-reward kind of person? And what if you had only a limited amount of time to achieve the impossible?

This type of questions becomes very real when looking at climate change. If 10 years is all we have to reverse the destructive trend we initiated, shouldn't we be getting out of the safe zone and fundamentally rethink the rulebook?

Really? An episode about psychedelics?

Yes. There are plants that we have been taking for milliners and that we don’t know how to deal with anymore. As we are standing at a moment in time where expanding our consciousness is fundamental to our survival, it is hard not to cover consciousness expanding substances. Not an easy topic because there is a lot of confusion going on, it’s controversial and the space is facing many challenges:

It was time to talk about money. With this episode, I am opening a discussion about where funding for impact comes from, and how to unleash its true potential. Needless to say this will take more than one interview: there is a lot to discover on how philanthropy, impact investment, public funds and other financial schemes work, and what needs to improve if we are to get things back in order on our Blue Planet.

When looking at the refugee crisis and witnessing the constant inflow of asylum seekers across the European continent, the human mind easily falls into stigmatization. We eventually let in the emotions media and politics seek to create in us and we get captivated in a way that is highly unproductive.

What is your relationship with coffee?

Millions of people around the world work blood, sweat and tears so we can all enjoy this one cup of magic potion every morning. Truly, most of us have some kind of addiction to the coffee moment. This one cup is subject to much debate - guilt sometimes - and dreams, more and more. The world of coffee is changing and I wanted to give it proper attention to find out what learnings we can draw from what turned into a key commodity on financial markets.

“I never realised what was on the walls was so deep”.

Their writing is on the walls. We pass in front of it everyday. Tags, calligraphy, “graffiti” (as the mainstream refers to it) or other forms of street art that sometimes disrupt our neighborhoods, trains and public spaces. Most of us don’t really pay attention, others call it vandalism, and just a few truly understand what it has to offer.

We didn’t agree on everything, but it was good fun! This conversation was a good way to start digging into the vast & complex world of food safety and agricultural systems, also touching on career trade-offs and purpose.

Jessica works as a researcher in communications at Purdue University in Indiana, United States. She recently edited a book combining the perspective of 17 academic voices from her sector, the typical minefield I love to get myself into.

I made a deal with Andreina: one day we will host a big party in a culturally rich, vibrant and healthy Venezuela to celebrate how far the Venezuelan people have come since 2019. Right now, the situation is more than critical, as you may know. This episode is not about re-doing the regular media coverage that the crisis is getting. It's the story of creative people smuggling medical supplies into the country while humanitarian aid is blocked and often repressed.

Steven is a young talented attorney from the Washington- we talk about human beings trying to reinvent the tree - and the threat that such an approach poses to life on Earth. More specifically, how geoengineering is silently turning from a crazy idea into a political, economical and scientific instrument that will help the oil & gas sector prosper on a roasting planet.

Zero Waste starts with good design, obviously. So we sat in the hallway of a design college and started talking.

There is a lot to learn from Joan Marc’s journey in economics, lobbying, advocacy and activism.

Catching him on his last day of vacation was a great way to take perspective on his career so far and on what's next. His organisation Zero Waste Europe has achieved a lot and made a meaningful contribution to how cities will manage their material streams from now on.

I was looking for a BIG abandoned industrial space for a campaign film I was working on last year. Guillem Ventura, our genius film director put me in touch with Daniel J. Hayes, who had 10,000m2 to offer, including 110 houses, a church, a bar and a dangerous industrial building ready for demolition. Perfect!

What I uncovered is an incredible project in the making and a fascinating human being with a lot of insights and experience to contribute.

There is a lot to learn from his decades of experience with activism in Eastern Europe defending communities against large brown infrastructure projects driven by development banks and industry. We talk about where our money is going, the role of the European Investment Bank in financing the fossil fuel industry and how to deal with people in suits that are typically insensitive to what local livelihoods can represent. . We traveled back in time to the fall of communism, where Petr’s life took a turn.

It’s been a good 20 years I haven’t sat in front of TV cartoons first thing in the morning. Doing so with the author himself was like a dream come true. In addition to the great success of his comic book character Dickie, Pieter De Poortere happens to be a very insightful person I could ask about black humour, visual storytelling, the artist’s take on suffering and social issues. As always, I learnt a lot. I am pretty sure this interview will be thought-provoking for you as well.

It was impossible. He made it happen. During this interview, I had the chance to taste the result of years of immense efforts, advanced research, persistence and patient execution: fresh water. Something we take for granted everyday but that 1 billion people still don’t have access to. Water filters exist, but what Mauricio did is dramatically cut the cost of high-performing filters from 3 digits to just a few euros, crowdsourcing knowledge in the maker movement and keeping everything open source.

Heidi Hautala is one of the most inspiring women I ever met and her career speaks for itself. From her childhood spent feeling on the fringes in Northern Finland to starting up the country's Green party to then becoming Vice President at the European Parliament, her life is full of learnings and inspiring stories.

“As women, we’re always judged." The future will be shaped by what we do in the present. And presently, it’s still very much a man’s world. Things are changing, but on our current course it will take 217 years before we reach equality between the genders. That’s not good enough!

A macroeconomist for many years, Dina was always told growth brings stability and prosperity. She started asking “is that really true?”, and sparked a whole new journey into de-growth and the circular economy that has shaped her life.

When 485 refugees came to a tiny town in Jutland, Denmark, it changed the way integration had to work in Denmark. So many newcomers living in Jutland yet totally disconnected from the local community - something had to be done. With one small room and one coffee machine, Mads Nygaard helped start a new nationwide movement that brings people together through story telling, connection, and crowd-sourcing. The Venligboerne movement is proof that we have all the tools we need to solve the refugee crisis.

Integration into a new country and culture is one of the biggest challenges a person can face. Fairooz Tamimi knows this first hand, having migrated from Jordan to Sweden in 2013.

Camille sits down with her to share her story, and discuss the barriers newcomers face when entering into business, as well as the great potential for diversity and strength when governments and business combat discrimination and begin treating immigrants as equals.
