The Old Fashion Dads Podcast: Average Dad's having real conversations. Listen in as two fathers (and the occasional guest) discuss different issues centered around being a dad (from a Christian Worldview), while sipping on a different whiskey each week, and usually accompanied by a good cigar.
In this episode we discuss sexuality, what true freedom in sexuality and relationships looks like. What is "good" and who defines good and what freedom looks like. We also discuss the cultural narrative on sexuality and the influence and even internal conflict in the LGBTQ community... specifically with the conflicting worldview and agenda of the Trans community with the rest of the gay / lesbian community. Is the goal to not have desire like the Buddhist say... or is it to give Christ control over our desires so we don't become slaves to our desires. Human's are "meaning makers" and need a purpose in life. Satisfying every desire of our heart will not leave us fulfilled or satisfied in life.
On this episode, we cover everything from abortion to Separation of Church and State, delve into different Worldviews and subconscious biases and how those impact how we vote and our values. We also touch on LGBTQ+ in politics and the irony of some politicians calling for leaving "religious beliefs" out of politics, when America is a country founded on Christian values and religious belief.
NOTES:
If voters don't believe in God, they will create their own definition of what is good, and it most likely won't be in line with God or what He has established as good. This puts God and those who follow Him at odds with "The World".
America is based on Judeo-Christian values (it's foundational laws, constitution and culture) but as we as a society get further away from those principles, our hearts are no longer being conformed to God's will or desires and society starts sliding into chaos, confusion and breaking down.
Wherever man has tried to replace religion or God, it goes very, very badly and millions of people end up dead - Communism, Totalitarianism, Marxism, etc. (these humanist beliefs are based on the assumption that humans are basically good and largely ignore human nature and motivation)
While America is a Constitutional Republic (NOT a democracy), God's Kingdom is one of a benevolent dictator (an all powerful God on the throne who wants and provides the very best for his people.

Cancel culture, censorship and free speech. How do we as Christian, fathers, and parents tackle these issues. Whether you like it or not, none of us can simply ignore this issue of censorship and what we know as free speech. So we must turn to the Bible to help us develop a view of speech. We are called to speak truth, but not engage in the idolatry of “Freedom of Speech”

Have people become so fragile that they can't bear to hear something they don't agree with or is "offensive" OR are people so stupid, that they can't be trusted to hear more than one perspective and decide what is true or false?
“Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire! And the tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness. The tongue is set among our members, staining the whole body, setting on fire the entire course of life, and set on fire by hell.”

“Our post-Christian society has dangerously married moral relativism to a sense of righteous zeal inherited from its Christian past, without any of the Christian humility that comes from the comforting faith in God’s providence. Accordingly, it is hellbent on a moral crusade to enthrone relativism by force of will.” - Brad Little John

This week we sit down and "Babel" about the essentialism of being dependent on God, talk the connections between the self-glorifying endeavor of the Tower of Babel and the internet, as well as C. B. puts his counselor hat on for C. H. existential question on how do we really know our motivation for following God is pure and not just trying to use God to get a good life...
NOTES:
The Tower of Babel is really just an extension what started in the Garden of Eden with Adam and Eve eating of the forbidden tree, mans desire to be independent of God.
What is so wrong with desiring to be independent from God in the first place? What does this matter?
God was checking their hearts... and it wasn't good. They wanted to be God... which is still humanity's desire today.
The root of "culture" and "cultivate" is the same... God has built within us the desire and ability to take his raw creation and cultivate it in something more, developing technology and create culture.
How we use these technology tools, including the internet, for good or evil matters... as does our heart behind WHY these technologies was created (are we trying to replace God with our own "greatness")
We are designed and built to be dependent on God in everything
Psalms 139 -
O Lord, you have searched me and known me!
You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
you discern my thoughts from afar.
You search out my path and my lying down
and are acquainted with all my ways.....

Prosperity Gospel, blab it and grab it, name it and claim it, health and wealth... false teachers who say you need to "give to get" come in many flavors. Beware of false doctrines and false teachers. We are called to walk in truth and light and worship the one true God.
NOTES:

The Gospel Coalition - "What you should know about the prosperity gospel" - www.thegospelcoalition.org/article/what-you-should-know-about-the-prosperity-gospel
David W. Jones outlines five errors of prosperity gospel teaching:
The Abrahamic covenant is a means to material entitlement.
Jesus’s atonement extends to the “sin” of material poverty.
Christians give in order to gain material compensation from God.
Faith is a self-generated spiritual force that leads to prosperity.
Prayer is a tool to force God to grant prosperity.
“In light of Scripture, the prosperity gospel is fundamentally flawed,” Jones says. “At bottom, it is a false gospel because of its faulty view of the relationship between God and man. Simply put, if the prosperity gospel is true, grace is obsolete, God is irrelevant, and man is the measure of all things. Whether they’re talking about the Abrahamic covenant, the atonement, giving, faith, or prayer, prosperity teachers turn the relationship between God and man into a quid pro quo transaction.”

On today’s episode we are talking about 5 things you can do to jump start your marriage... or 5 things that we should all be continually doing in our marriage, if we want them to be healthy and God glorifying.
NOTES:
5 Tips to Jump Start Your Marriage:
Lead from a place of humility
What does it mean protect your marriage?
It leads to pursuing immediate gratification and neglect the hard thing and commitments we've made
As Christians, God and His Word is our highest authority... not ourselves, not our minds, not societal trends.
Ephesians 5
To steward our marriage well means to recognize that the marriage and your spouse doesn't ultimately belong to you but rather, it belongs to God and you are to take good care of it, as if it was yours.

We recorded this episode the summer of 2021 with return guests, Julia Bringolf and Stacy Manning. In this lively discussion, we get into the topic of Feminism, the varies waves of the feminist movement and the impact it's had on the church and society at large. NOTES:
•Recorded August 26, 2021 - released December 4, 2021
•This Weeks Whiskey: Bourbon from Willy's Distillery, Ennis, MT
•(Return) Guests (from Ep. 47 on Masculinity from a wives perspective):
•Julia Bringolf - Christian Bringolf's wife
•Stacy Manning - Co-Author of "Them Before Us, Why We Need a global Children's Rights Movement"
•If feminism is such a good thing, why are there 4 generations / iterations of it (1-4th waive feminism)?
•The feminist movement was really born out of men abdicating their responsibility to lead and take care of woman (Feminism was a response to an injustice in the world).
•Freedom and right to provide for ourselves are essential in life and some would say the Suffrage Movement was born out of that - woman fighting for the right for woman to vote, own land and work.
•The leaders of the suffrage movement were largely affluent, high-society woman who needed something to do with their time - They weren't fighting for woman to work in factories... they wanted woman in board rooms. They wanted the "privileges" of the men of that day, without the responsibility's (going to war, fighting fires, put themselves in harms way)
•Ironically, it took a government of men to vote to give women the right to vote.
•Original feminism still allowed for glorifying God and honoring biblical gender identity.
•As feminism gained traction and saw wins for Woman's rights, the fight shifted away from fighting for woman's rights and became about fighting agains men and in the 1960's, the fight for freedom and equality became a fight for "being better" than men, which includes sexual autonomy and breaking of sexual boundaries... which doesn't honor God.
•Today's feminism has become ugly and not glorifying to God.
•"When woman received the right to vote, the country started pivoting to the left... because woman seek security and generally don't take the same risks men are willing to... and were more willing to vote [tax payer] money into their own pockets" - Stacy
•Too many women felt like they couldn't rely on their husbands (men weren't doing their job), so in order to get the security they desired, they used the vote to have the government step in and start taking care of them (replacing the role of the family, men in particular).
•The Bible says that the husband (man) is the head of the house, like Christ is the head of the church, and with that comes a sense of power. In a biblical world, the one "in charge" takes responsibility for those under them, those in their care.
•Adam's first sin was abdicating his headship and care of Eve.
•For much of human history, woman were second-class citizens, less than men, subjugated and even seen as property... which is never how it was intended. When God created Adam and Eve, it was in a complimentarian context, where man and woman were distinct and different and designed to compliment one another.
•Men and women represent the different halves and characteristics of God... without each other, this world is not complete.
•In all the discussion around feminism and equality of the sexes, the issue os sin is never talked about and that is the real issue (with everything).
•Phases of Feminism:
•1st wave: 1900s-1930s (woman's suffrage movement)
•2nd wave: 1940s-1960s (men going to war while woman went to work outside the house & post-war autonomy where woman (the parents of the hippy generation) pushed back against traditional gender roles of having to go back to working in the home)
•3rd wave: 1960s- (Sexual revolution where woman wanted to be as "free" and promiscuous as men, though hippy culture was very small in the context of the larger American society at the time)
•4th wave: (Modern feminism which says that men and women are exactly the same, gender is a social construct and men aren't necessary or even that men are bad)
•"Of course women needed a seat at the table... but then they got up and started dancing on it" - Stacy
•It didn't take long before feminism started serving men.
•What is the difference between "rights" and "entitlement"
•Rights are inherent and can't be something that someone else needs to provide to you.
•Women's rights are the same as men's rights... they are human rights.
•Injustice is when someone infringes on someone else's God given rights.
•Going back to the idea that you have to have "skin in the game" in order to have a say in the community (having the privilege to vote), makes a lot of sense (Property owners, business owners, job creators and the producers in society... so you don't have non-producers voting to take money and resources away from the producers).
•Male feminist ("meneminists") are not sexy - the grossest of the gross. Men have been conditioned to believe if they don't support feminism, they'll be accused of hating women.
•We are for women... just like God is. Jesus was the original "feminist" in the sense of giving women credit and honor (In the honoring ways He interacted with them and in how scripture records it was the woman that first reported that Jesus's tomb was empty (back in that day, a woman't testimony was not to be trusted).
•At the end of the day, Feminism is really rooted in the hatred of men and hate the traditional gender roles (the one's that God designed)
•Feminism is often a gateway into leftism in the church (A woman pastor or woman leaders of a church). The only people you find that attend churches pastor by women are emasculated boys and women.
•The Church is loosing because it doesn't value God's Word anymore and is more concerned about fitting in with a fallen culture, than boldly proclaiming and living God's truth.
•As societies become more affluent we start believing the lie that we are in control of our lives and the world around. We start thinking we are god, instead of relying on God.
•When you become comfortable and secure, we don't feel like we have a need for God.
•As you get further away from living lives of day-to-day survival, people need a sense of purpose and struggle, so they make up asinine ideas and movements to take up their free-time (think CRT or Black Lives Matter).
•As a modern society, we tend to look down our nose at the past, thinking we are so much more advanced then those primitive people who believed silly things and did terrible things... failing to see that in our "chronological snobbery" and arrogance, human nature has not changed and we are guilty of the same sins as our forefathers (and maybe worse with the millions of babies we've allowed to be murdered through abortion)... and the future generations will judge us in the same way.
•Feminism is an antithetical worldview to the gospel of Jesus. It can not save us... or women and at this point, only creates more division between men and woman, but putting our hope in God, brings us together and deals with our root problem of sin.

Quotes: from the just thinking podcast episode 112, “regardless of how you slice it, 3rd and 4th wave feminism demands the deconstruction of any system seen as patriarchal. This wave of feminism isn’t about being equal to men, it’s about a lack of need for men. As men are seen as the primary problem in a society that oppresses women.”
“At the root of the concept of egalitarianism is the idea of equality. The Oxford dictionary defines egalitarianism as the belief that everyone is equal and should have the same rights and opportunities; the idea of ecclesiastical egalitarianism in the church, specifically as it relates to professing Christians who believe that women being allowed to preach from the pulpit is a matter of equality rather than the authority of scripture is in many ways similar to the logic that drives CRT. Equality is the same thread that runs through both”

America is the land of opportunity and hard work... the downside of this is that we are often told and believe that we can do it all. We are told we can be anything we want to be or do anything we want to do, as long as you believe in yourself and work hard enough. Today we explore the truths and lies wrapped up in this narrative.
NOTES:
2 Corinthians 2:5: "... take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ"
Work is good! We should work hard and do a great job at it... but work shouldn't become so important to us, that it becomes our identity or becomes our object of our affection.

Special Episode this week, with our first book review. We are giving an overview of the book "Just Thinking: About the State" by Darrell Harrison and Virgil Walker, the creators and hosts of the Just Thinking Podcast. We have been listening and greatly blessed by this podcast, the amount of research, thought and preparation Darrell and Virgil put into each episode and to dissect and unpack each cultural or social topic and point back to scripture and the Gospel as our highest authority and God as our source of truth.
NOTES:
This is book is important for several reasons.
i. These five statements of the evangelical faith lay at the center of what
distinguished the theology of the Reformation from the theology of the Roman Catholic church in the 16th century. Sola scriptura is the belief that because Scripture is God’s inspired Word, it is the only inerrant, sufficient, and final authority for the church. Solus Christus is the assertion that Christ alone is the basis on which the ungodly are justified in God’s sight. Sola fide maintains that the believer receives the redemption Christ has accomplished only through faith. Sola gratia proclaims that all of our salvation, from beginning to end, is by grace and grace alone. Because of these things, the Reformers held fast to the phrase soli Deo gloria, that only God receives glory for our salvation. (et al. TGC)

Walter Shepherd is Christian Harris's father-in-law and over the past 7 years, has been enduring the mental and physical health decline of his wife of over 50 years, to the disease of Alzheimers. He discusses grief, loss and what it looks like to go to God in your pain, doubts and yet still be faithful and trust in God's goodness and grace.
NOTES:
They want to move on from the uncomfortableness of grief and act like everything is fine, as if grieving or being sad dishonors God

We got some of the sharpest female minds with us today (Katy Faust and Stacy Manning) on this special podcast episode on abortion. The world is loosing its mind and the culture's responds to the Texas heart beat law, is no exception. We couldn't help but notice the outrage against it, so we did a special podcast session, were we unpack what should be obvious to Christian's... why abortion and the killing of babies is evil and how to combat some of the common arguments and mindset that comes with those who think abortion is a good thing.
NOTES:
Children have a right to life and a right to their mom and dad.
Why is abortion NOT about the woman's body?
As Christian's, "our body" and our children's bodies and lives are not our own. We are stewards of the lives God gives us, the kids's God blesses us with and all that God entrusts us with in this life.
The push for abortion is one of the many byproducts of feminism, where feminist see that a man can walk away from a pregnancy, but the woman can't. And so in their mind, women will never be equal until they are the same and so abortion is the woman's equality to be able to walk away from the pregnancy too.
Woman who have never been pregnant, given birth or been a parent, have no place to tell men (many of whom have walked with their wives through the pregnancy and birthing process) have no say on abortion because it's solely a "woman's issue".
The manipulation of language to obscure the brutally hard truth about what abortion actually is.
Abortion is not about "reproductive health". The baby has already been conceived (reproduced) and if not interrupted by a deliberate attempt to end the babies life, it will grow and be born as a human baby.
Christian's CAN NOT be both "pro life" and "pro choice" and still be faithful to Jesus. Stacy takes it one step further and says, "you can't be a Democrat or vote for Democratic policies and politicians and still call yourself a Christian".
Either the unborn life of the baby has moral significance or it doesn't... and that will determine where someone falls on the issue of abortion.
There have been over 41M legal abortions from 1973 to 2018 and while the numbers have been decreasing since 1997, there were still 620,000 abortions in 2018 (the last year the data is available) and society has shifted from saying they should be safe, rare and legal, to they should be allowed for any reason, at any time, with no shame/stigma and even celebrated.
Genesis 1:27-28 - “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. And God blessed them. And God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth."”

The purpose for this episode is to encourage single dads in their parenting. To call men to be thoughtful and mindful in how they pursue relationships with women, so they may cultivate legacy and not just feed sexual desire.
NOTES:
2 Thessalonians 3:3 – But the Lord is faithful; he will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one.
Philippians 4:6 – Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done.
Romans 8:38-39 – I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Christian B. is a "Clinical Psychotherapist" and references this manual frequently
What is trauma? "A deeply distressing or disturbing experience"
If everything we don't like becomes "traumatic" to us, is anything really trauma? The word looses it's meaning.
Why does trauma happen?
National Alliance on Mental Health: https://nami.org/Home
Often people who cause trauma are living out a pattern or cycle of abuse or generational sin. Hurt people, hurt people.
Where is God in trauma?
Satan will try and use anything to separate us from God, to include the feelings of shame and anger often associated with trauma.
What should be a Christian's response to trauma?
Christ experience extreme Trauma in this crucifixion on the cross, so we have a savior who gets it and can relate to our hardships and trauma that we may experience in this life.
How does or should the church respond to it's member's experiencing trauma... specifically trauma at the hands of fellow church members or Christians?

On this episode we explore what happens when things don't go our way in life. Even the best plans... and vacations can go totally sideways, as Christian B. recently experienced and shares with us his epic family vacation fail and how he dealt with it. Is it possible to still be grateful and praise God, despite tough situations in life? This is a story you don't want to miss... and it will likely make you feel better about any vacation mis-adventures you've had ;-)
NOTES:
Do we downplay it and pretend like everything is fine?
So much of our disappointment reveals our desire to be in control... instead of allowing God to be in control.

This week we discuss sin and behavior modification (temporary change) vs. lasting heart change. Habitual sin patterns (like porn addiction) can paralyze us and keep Christian's ineffective and paralyzed. We explore how we can go from superficial apologies to a true desire for lasting heart change by going to going to God, who can provide the desire and heart transformation that frees us.

•This Weeks Whiskey: Bainbridge Distillery - 100 proof Whiskey Forty Saloon bourbon (super tasty!)

•First recording in about 1 month - Christian H. talks a little about his 2 weeks Annual Training for the Army National Guard in Salt Lake City & Christian B. teases out how his family vacation did not go as planned and we will talk about that on the next episode.
•This topic came about after Christian B. wrote the Blog Post, “I’m Sorry, But I’m Not Sorry”: manipulation masquerading as humility and repentance - https://www.buriencounseling.com/blog/june-27th-2021
•How does change happen?
•Why do so many people struggle to implement lasting change and not fall back into destructive behavior
•What motivates change? Simply being sorry we got caught (not actually sorry that we hurt someone else)? or a Deep sorrow for our sin and it's wounding effects, driving us to our knees in repentance and true desire to seek God and the lasting change he has for us?
•If we are truly "sorry", would we continue doing the same thing over and over and over again (like our kids do)?
•Does habitual sin happen to us... or are we active participants in pursuing that sin?
•Do we really want to change and leave behind our sin and be transformed by the Holy Spirit.
•Romans 7:15 - Paul talks about doing the things he doesn't want to do as a slave to sin... 15For I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. 16Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with the law, that it is good. 17So now it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me. 18For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. 19For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I keep on doing. 20Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.
•We can not both be the cause of our issues and sin, and the solution to it (We need Jesus and a power that comes from outside of ourselves (see Episode 021 on Self-love)
•Christian B. sees a lot of situations where people are trying to put a new "paint job" on the outside but are still broken and un-changed on the inside.
•When thinking of habitual and on-going sin that ensnares men, the obvious issue that comes up is often masturbation and pornography.
•It's not the action that makes us sinners. If we aren't masterbating or looking at porn but our heart is full of lust and we want to and are making plans to do those things... we are still slaves to that sin desire.
•We need to think vertically of our sin and how it hurts not just us and those around us but most importantly, hurts God and our relationship with Him.
•Our sin should grieve us and we should pray Psalms 139 to ask God to help reveal our heart to us.
•It's only our reliance and dependance on God (through prayer and regular time in the Bible) that will change our hearts desires and therefore our long-term actions and behavior and free us from our habitual sin and desires for sin.
•To have real "heart change" engages the why behind what's causing the destructive behavior and not just the behavioral symptom of what's going on inside the heart.
•Contrition, Confession & Repentance should be a regular rhythm in a Christian's life.
•What do you do when we know we need to repent but don't want to...? Are we ok being not in control and feeling "weak" not being the one able to fix the situation?
•We are called to be dependent on God.

On this episode we are graced by two amazing female guests and authors, Katy Faust and Stacy Manning. They share a little about their amazing book on Children's Rights, "Them Before Us" and then we get into some juicy conversation about conspiracy theories, how we determine truth from myth, what the draw to believing them can be, why ideas matter so much and how bad ideas can have real and significant consequences on people and our relationships.
NOTES:
No matter married, single, gay or straight - Every adult needs to conform to the rights of children and do the hard things that are best for children
What is a conspiracy?
When the ultimate and true Gospel of God is rejected, people will create their own means of works salvation.
Conspiracy theories are tempting to believe in because just like with any "good" lie, there is an element of truth to it.
Christian B says that the difference is "intent". What is the intent of the various conspiracy claims?
We talk about a bit about Art Bell's talk show (which specialized in call in guests and conspiracy theories).
As Christian's, we are not called to be the aggressors and pick fights. We are called to stand firm and be faithful to God... and sometimes that means loosing friends but that is not the mark of success. Obedience to Christ is the mark of success, no matter how it turns out.
When doing something is hard, that is most often the right thing to do. Rarely is the right thing to do easy or without cost (like standing up for what is right and true, even if it's unpopular and goes against societal majority consensus).
When you feel God is asking you to do something or say something to someone that you don't want to, Pray to God to open that door and make it abundantly obvious that you are to do that thing.
At the end of the day, we need to care more about what God things of us than what other people think of us. God will never disappoint and humans always will.

This week we get fired up about politics. We talk social justice, the purpose of government, rail against the worldview of BLM and emphasize the importance of making God and scripture our highest authority, so He can inform our engagement with culture and not the other way around, where we are seeing a lot of Christian's trying to conform God into this world's image.
NOTES:
•This Weeks Whiskey: Don Julio Tequila
•What are politics and what is the purpose of Government?
•Politics are one aspect of our Culture... Culture drives politics and policies
•What is culture and why does God care about Culture? He established our calling to cultivate creation in Genesis, with Adam's mandate to have dominion over the garden, animals and all of God's creation - to take the untapped potential God created and cultivate it into something more.
•America's government and politics (self-governed by a constitutional republic & embrace of democracy) is very unique historically, when compared to the rest of the world
• People are corrupt and sinful, therefore government will be imperfect and corrupt (to an extent)
•As Christian's, politics will not save us through their policies or politicians who better represent our worldview.
•A decline in cultural morality and social norms will not be reversed through politics, because politics is down-stream from culture.
•America has historically been a light in the world when it came to foreign policy, standing up for what is right and getting involved in helping out other countries in times of need, both militarily and with food/financial aid.
•As Christian's, God calls us to create culture and cultivate God's creation.
•At a minimum, Christian's should be involved in politics by being informed voters. Voting for people and policies that are most in-line with what God loves, opposed to what God hates and will encourage for human flourishing.
•The first organization & structure that God created was the family and that is our primary calling in this world, the foundation for society and all else flows out of that. We are called to be good workers and stewards of God's creation and that includes some of us being called to love and glorify God in politics.
•We need to have and keep God's word as our highest authority and resist the temptation to engage the world on their terms. It should be deeply problematic for us if our churches (or us) spend more time talking about "social Justice" and cultural trends than they do about the Gospel. We need to understand that supporting or parroting talking points of organizations like Black Lives Matter (BLM), sets us against God because they are based on an alternative world view to how God has established his created order.
•When culture starts influencing us more than our relationship with Christ & we start bending scripture and our image of Jesus to better fit into what our culture says is acceptable... we are going down the wrong road.
•Scripture should be influencing our engagement with culture, not the other way around.
•You can't fight discrimination and racism with more discrimination and racism. You can't fight injustice with more injustice.
• 1 Timothy 4 talks about the sin of "Partiality", favoring one group of people over another. God has very strong words against those that show partiality towards others, no matter what the motive or wrong they claim they are trying to right.
•God created us to give Glory back to God and a large part of that is loving what God loves and hating what God hates... aligning ourselves with what God values.
•The "separation of church and state" is not in the constitution or in law. It was coined by Thomas Jefferson in reference to not having the US Government establish or endorse a specific religion because they had come from England, where the official religion was the Church of England and it had substantial sway over the government and they rightfully wanted to avoid that co-mingling.
•We all experience sin being committed against us (injustice, racism, prejudice, etc) and we have a choice with how we respond to that... either with bitterness and anger or forgiveness and moving on and above our struggles.
•We are all (as Christians) called to be representatives and "influencers" for Christ... through our work & interactions with others... and that includes politics.
•If we are God centered, we are working hard to bring God the glory... when we are self-focused, we are trying to bring ourselves glory.
•At the end of the day, we start with God and do what we do by working hard and joyfully for the Glory of God.
•Check out the "Just Thinking Podcast" (https://justthinking.me/podcast-home/) for some great deep dives into unpacking the underlying ideas of social justice and our cultural moment
•Check out "The Federalist Papers" to get some great insight into why the founding fathers wrote the United States Constitution the way they did and the ideas behind how they setup the US Government, as a Constitutional Republic and NOT as a Democracy, very much on purpose because they saw democracy as the tyranny of the majority.

This week we talk about lesson's learned from Christian B's experience of loosing his temper and breaking his hand after punching his solid oak front door. Is it a common experience among men to loose our tempers and react in a sinful way?
NOTES:
Shaming your kids or wife (not controlling your language or tongue)
Proverbs 3:5-6 - 5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. 6 In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
In ALL your ways, acknowledge Him... and HE will direct your path (a promise)
If we are truly being dependent on God, we would know our limit, not try to rely on our own strength and understanding and our disposition will be more in-line with Christ's and we won't loose control in our frustration and perhaps not even get angry
Don't believe the lie that you can't be honest and vulnerable with your spouse... they love you and will not shame you or think less of you when you share with them and need God
What do we do with our shame when we do fail or fall short. Does that feeling reflect reality or are we believing a lie that temps us to withdraw and isolate, or try harder to be more self-reliant and strong (instead of dependent on God)

This week we take on what it means for wives to submit to their husbands and for husbands to submit to Christ in the leading & loving of their families, as sacrificial servant-leaders.
NOTES:
Ephesians 5:22-29 - "22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. 24 Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands. 25 Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, 26 that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish.[a] 28 In the same way husbands should love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of one body..."

This week we tackle some of the lies couples tell themselves to justify their decision to get divorced. We explore what happens when cultural norms of "self love" and being "authentic" and "true to yourself" seep into a marriage and spouses stop fighting for their marriage and even justify the decision to get a divorce because they believe it's better for their kids not to see them fighting, then for them to grow up in a house with both a mother and father present.

As a continued conversation from last week's episode on "What is church community", we discuss how to decide if and when you should find a new church and what exactly to look for. What makes a "good church" and should we even be "shopping" for a church...?
NOTES:
Unrepentant sin of the pastor / elders or the leadership allows unrepentant sin of it's members
INvalid Reasons (less-valid) for changing churches:
The church is full of flawed sinners (like you)

We are joined for our very first female guests: Julia Bringolf and author, Stacy Manning, as we get a wife's perspective on masculinity. Definitely one of our best and most controversial episodes, with these bold and fiery women as we discuss marriage, if "toxic masculinity" a thing and is masculinity under attack in our culture.
NOTES:
Stacy Manning - Co-Author of "Them Before Us, Why We Need a global Children's Rights Movement"
Questions:
What happens when the cultural norm for a man swings from "The Greatest Generations" stoic, un-emotional, distant and quite man (like many of our grand fathers, to the soft and sensitive "man" who wears his emotions on his sleeve and is emotionally and physically delicate, who doesn't stand up for what is right and suites when life gets hard?
The opposite side of men being violent, is them being gentle and tender towards their wives and children... and having both a father and mother in the home is key to children seeing and learning this
How is a young man not to be angry in a fatherless house, knowing that he is missing out and that his dad has chosen to abandon him and his mom
How have you experienced masculinity?
A woman wants to be protected by her husband... woman don't want to be the strong protector in the family
Is masculinity under attack?
Woman would do their daughters a favor if they taught them, "yes, you can have it all but it will be in a different order than men... and you need a man to accomplish it". Woman can still have their kids and be CEO... but they have to have their kids in their 20s and be a CEO after that.
Feminism and chauvinism are both distortions of how God created men and woman to operate and relate to each other. Complimentaryism is the answer.
While the church is not directly responsible in the failure of men as husbands & fathers (that requires a much more intimate relationships, mentoring or discipleship) but the Church did fail in not standing up agains the divorce culture and defending marriage, which God gave us as the foundation for a healthy family.

Giving money to the church is often not a popular topic but this week we discuss tithing. God calls us to be joyful and sacrificial givers of our time, money and "first fruits", giving us opportunity to trust God in our dependance on Him. Yet sometimes we are guilty of critiquing God's bride and justifying why we don't need to give to His church that He loves so much, He came to die for her? We also get into what it means to follow Jesus's example as a Servant-Leader, as the head of our house and lead our family well in reading God's word, prayer and tithing... all things that God uses to transform our hearts, minds and lives.
NOTES:
This week we discuss what it means to be an introvert and extravert and how it affects how you interact with those around you. Tune in to find out which we are, and what exactly an "Irish goodby" is... With special off-camera guest commentary by Christian B.'s wife, Julia Bringolf.

•Does not wanting new friends make you an introvert?
•Hospitality and having an "open" home is a sign you are an extravert
•If your home is your "sanctuary" and by invite only, you are likely an introvert
•Extraverts may have larger friend networks while Introverts have smaller, tighter friend groups

Discipleship can be both formal and informal, as older Christian's mentor, teach, provide accountability and guide younger Christian's in life and their relationship with Jesus. As we mature in our faith, we are also called to be disciples to younger Christians and pass on the wisdom that comes with being discipled ourselves and from being in relationship with God.

This week we get deep into theology, worldview, biblical justice and recent ideological cultural shifts... and why this all matters to us as Christians. If we don't understand the culture we live in and how it's changing around us, we won't be able to apply or share the Gospel in a meaningful way. Like Paul in Athens, using the "statue to the unknown god", to share about the one true God, we need to understand our culture in order to speak to people's needs. Post-modernism has given way to Critical Theory, as Progressivism becomes more extreme and more widely adopted. We unpack these issues and much more in this episode!
NOTES:
•This Weeks Whiskey: Small Batch Wyoming Whiskey, made in Kirby Wyoming
Show Notes:
•Guest: Shane Rehberg
•As a student of history and culture, Shane doesn't see history so much as who did what, when... but rather the history of ideas: Ideas create cultures and those cultures either succeed and or fail based on the quality of their ideas and values they are built on.
•Societies always change but our culture has been going through some massive and rapid shifts lately.
•WHAT IS CULTURE: Everything from the sort of stories we tell ourselves through books and entertainment, to how we relate and interact with one another - the norms that we agree to as a society.
•The combination of the COVID-19 pandemic + social unrest seems to be leading us to a tipping point as a society.
•"The Fiery Angel" book by - The stories we tell ourselves (and tell our kids) come first and that shapes our patterns that we see when we view the world. And our identity, culture and politics flow out of those patterns as our worldview.
•Think for example how the Disney narrative around women change over the years; from the damsel in distress, responding with kindness, love & patience... until her prince shows up and rescues her and they live happily ever after... to what we see now with a more common narrative of a young woman not listening to her father, leaving her parents care, proving her father wrong and living happily ever after.
• American Cultural Shifts in the 20th Century:
•Modernism: early 1900s to 1950s - People in general believe in the idea of an absolute truth and living morally based on Judeo-Christian values.
•Post Modernism: 1960s onward - A rejection of the concept of ultimate truth, where everyone determines their own "truth" (you would never say, your wrong and I'm right) and everything is considered just a matter of perspective. The highest good is to be "authentic" and "true to yourself". (This is the world that the oldest of the millennials and youngest of the GenX grew up in).
•Critical Theory: Repackaged Marxism gained popularity in college "intellectual" circles in the 1960s and became more popularized to larger society through the advent of BLM in 2018 and the social unrest of 2020 and through such books as "White Fragility". The basic premise is that people are primarily identified as members of oppressor or oppressive groups based on your gender, race, sexual orientation, etc. and your ability to know and perceive truth is directly related to your membership of one of these oppressor or oppressive group. For example, if you are white, you are inherently racist and therefore are blinded to your racism and your perspective and opinion don't matter as much as someone who is from an oppressed class, who has better access to "truth" because of the systemic racism they have experienced.
•It's easy for Christian's to unwittingly buy into some of our cultural narrative because of the re-defining of terms, like how our culture defines "justice" is very different than how God defines "justice"... and so Christian's find themselves saying, "we'll of course we should be fighting for justice and not be a racist" but they aren't looking deeper to see whether the worldview of something like Critical Theory is compatible with how God says we should relate to each other and to Himself (like Critical Theory requiring partiality, while God describes justice AS NOT showing partiality - It's a clear example of the world calling something good that God calls evil).
•Like being foreigners in a different country (specifically one that also speaks english), Christian's can find themselves using the same words as the culture but then find that while they are using the same words, they mean something entirely different (example: justice, racism, equality, fairness, etc).
•Acts 17:22 - Paul on Mars Hill addresses the Athenians, saying that he sees that they are a very religious people, observing the culture to find an opening for proclaiming the Gospel to them.
•Dr. Voddie Baucham: We find ourselves in a culture that has a very different worldview and values of Biblical Christianity.
•All Worldview contain these 4 essential elements that shape the story we tell ourselves and how we see and interpret the world around us:
•Creation: A Creation story about why are we here and how did we get here?
•Fall: Something went wrong - We all know that the world isn't the way it's suppose to be, so why is that?
•Redemption: What mush I do to become good and fix what is wrong with the world?
•Restoration: What does it look like once we become good and fix what is wrong. What is the end result or goal?
•The epistemology (the theory of truth) of post-modernism: Truth is determined by experience... and if you had experienced life the way I have, you would have the same perspective and see things may way (which is not a Biblically compatible worldview). The highest authority is a person's experience and personal perspective, not God's truth as laid out in scripture.
•The greatest "sin" of post-modernism is to be dishonest, in-authentic and put on a false image.
•The epistemology of our current culture (Critical Theory / Social Justice): Truth is centered around "oppression" and power struggles, and individuals access to truth is directly related to the oppressor/oppressed groups people find themselves in because of their race and gender.
•C.S. Lewis: Every human heart has a "God shaped hole in their heart". We are designed for worship and we will always find something or someone to fill that void.
•Culture used to say that there should be "equality", where now they say "equity"... meaning that it's no longer about treating people equal but rather a focus on unequal OUTCOMES, like if one group of people have something another group of people have (like larger/nicer houses), that would be considered "unjust" now).
•Works based righteousness (all worldviews apart from Christianity require you to save yourself through your own action and effort), all lead to two places: Success leads to pride and superiority. Failure leads to a loss of hope and despair.

This week we talk about how we can disagree and deal with our marital conflict well, in a way that is kind towards one another and still glorifying to God. Modeling repentance and forgiveness to our kids is key when our failures (when we don't fight well with our wives) are on display in front of our kids.

It's hard to take a stand for Christ and truth in today's lost and hostile culture. Today we look at lessons from the Book of Jonah on what it means to bring the saving message of God to your enemies, through being obedient to God... even if like Jonah, you'd much rather see your enemies destroyed and "get what they deserve".
NOTES:
Why use the book of Jonah to address today’s current events and as a foundation for standing for God’s truth. Jonah is a prophet of God, called to speak on behalf of God and call people to repentance. Jonah is sinful and responds to God’s commands in a disobedient way that exposes his racism and prejudice, as well as the hate in his heart. The story of Jonah shows us, the reader, we are like Jonah in many ways. We are prejudice, discriminatory, racist, sinful etc. We have all been enemies of God at some point and God reaches down and picked us up out of the depths and gave us new life. The story of Jonah shows us that God has mercy on his enemies and that we should also have mercy and love our enemies. Standing for “truth” needs to be God’s truth, not a truth you make up. Standing for truth needs to have a theological understanding of what our spiritual circumstances were prior to Christ saving us...otherwise we are a noisy “gong” (1 Corinthians 13)

Divorce is something that touches most of, if not all Americans. Divorce is an issue that has become normalized and common. Christian and I sit down to discuss our thoughts on divorce from psychological and theological viewpoints; And as always there will be whiskey and cigars.
Being most concerned with what God says and cares about, instead of caring what those who don't love God think about us... will greatly help us respond to a culture that is largely ok with divorce and increasingly doesn't even see even see the need of marriage.

Or do we need to constantly have our armor on and always "be strong"? Join us for this conversation as we pull from personal experiences and look to Jesus to guide us in this emotional response.

This week's episode is solo hosted & recorded by Christian Harris, while he was on his family vacation at a lake house in Virginia. He sits down with a family friend, father and pastor of Osborne Baptist Church in Eden, NC. We touch on his backstory and how he came to be a pastor, as well as some of the unique history of America's Christian founding, dispelling some commonly believed myths about the founding fathers, historical revisionism, America's checkered past with slavery, where we are now as a country and where we can find our hope.

On this episode we talk about Patriotism, cover some brief history about America's Declaration of Independence, celebrated on the 4th of July and the uniqueness of our Founding Fathers vision and grand experiment that is the United States of America. While I would argue that the United States is one of the best places to live and I hope we all strive for the American ideals of freedom, liberty and justice... America has it's faults and successes but our ultimate allegiance should be to God.

As dad’s we can’t ignore the shame and pride that we have in our lives. Shame and Pride are the opposite sides of the same coin... not needing God. One says I'm too good for God and don't need Him, while the other says, I'm too bad for God, there is not way for Him to accept me. As dads, we all have our share of pride and shame, which keeps us self-dependent and not God-dependent.

Join us for a special Father’s Day episode. We try to keep this short as we talk about, in no particular order, memories of our fathers, how divorce culture is normative and the grace of Christ that any dad can change the legacy they leave behind. Talking through these issues, we seek to ask the questions, “Do we love the things God loves?” “Do we hate the things God hates?” We ask these questions and have this discussion while drinking a 6yr aged Rye from Templeton Whiskey.
On today’s episode we’re gonna talk about what our responses as fathers to the coronavirus, pandemic, and information tidal wave should look like. Does the Bible give any direction to our current chaos and what whiskey will be sip on while hashing this out. Also, we welcome our first guest of the podcast, Joe Castaldo. On today’s episode we are talking about the George Floyd protests, riots and how do we respond as white men and Christians. In this candid discussion about if our lack of response is a response and is there anything we as white men and Christian's can do as leaders in our communities and families when large social injustices and conversations hit the national stage.
NOTES:
Guilt is something that every human encounters at some point in their lives and this is especially true for fathers. Guilt usually means wrongdoing has happened; often this wrongdoing for a father can be due to a perception of who they are and what they think they should be doing. Guilt isn’t always necessarily bad. It means, as a dad, we have a sensitive conscience to what is happening and a sensitivity to what may need to change in our behavior or actions. How we identify and respond to guilt as fathers is what matters as fathers

In this episode we sip on some Very Olde St. Nick Summer Rye from Preservation Distillery and talk about fatherhood and fear. We seek to ask three questions. What do fathers fear? How do fathers respond to their fear? What message does the Bible his fathers regarding fear?
Today we’re throwing back some whiskey from Early Times. This whiskey is nice and smooth and is sure to help in going through the topic of anxiety and fatherhood. In this episode, we are looking to identify how fathers/men misidentify themselves as well as talk about our “core” truth as it relates to anxiety, fatherhood and ultimately our relationship with God.
On tonight’s episode, I’ll be giving Harris either an Irish or Scotch Whiskey and see if he can tell which one it is. We’re also going to talk about what it means to express more than just the "safe" emotion of anger as a dad and discuss what it means to show the full emotional spectrum the way God created us to.
Tonight we sip on some High Peaks Distilling whiskey while jumping into the topic of value and worth as a dad. We will touch on how our identity in Christ is beginning point and foundation for a sustainable identity as a father.
Average Dad's having real conversation's over a different whiskey each week
Welcome to our inaugural episode of the Old Fashion Dad Podcast!
Christian Harris and Christian Bringolf sip on a different whiskey each week, as we discuss what it means to be dads. This isn't another podcast heaping on more stuff you SHOULD be doing to be a good dad or "advice from experts" telling you about how great we are at being dad's. Just a couple average dad's talking about being fathers, husbands and friends and our need to be dependent on Jesus through our successes and failures.
