Any study of influential Chicago DJs would be incomplete without Farley Keith (later Farley “Jackmaster” Funk). Farley started DJing at the Playground in 1981, where he would stay through several name changes until 1987; however it was his work with the Hot Mix 5 on WBMX that reached the largest audience.
Farley was one of five original members in 1981, and his mixes exposed the entire city to what was happening in Chicago’s South Side clubs. In 1984, Farley left for WGCI (after Scott “Smokin” Silz’s departure). In 1986, he was joined by the rest of the group. Then Farley returned to WBMX in 1987, only to see the station sold.
Dynamic D., also known as 50% of the (now defunct) DJ team from the Netherlands--the Baldeejays. The ultimate blend of knowledge and skill. They were made famous with the mix series for Bordello A Parigi the recordstore and bar from Amsterdam.

Mindblowingly brilliant dub on here one from Scientist. Up there as one of his finest dubs in my opinion which is really saying something considering the quality of his output. Listening to this I often wonder whether Jack White is maybe a secret Scientist fan and was listening to this the night before he wrote Seven Nation Army. Just listen to that bassline...I should also add the extended vocal cut on the A-side is also brilliant . All round an essential record.

Gene Farris lives and breathes house music. A bonafide Chicago legend, he’s been pushing musical boundaries for close to three decades, from spinning at underground warehouse parties in the early 90s to working with the current crop of world-leading labels and artists. Toolroom, Relief, Dirtybird, Spinnin Deep, ViVa Music, Defected: all have released and championed Gene Farris records over the past few years, alongside his own Farris Wheel imprint: a fitting testament to the quality and relevance of the music he creates. As a self-taught engineer and producer, his work with Cajual, Relief Records, Defected Records, Soma Recordings and his own breakout label Farris Wheel Recordings, propelled his influence into ever expanding realms. His catalogue is vast, varied and consistently inspired, with notable releases including We Work It on Farris Wheel, Nursery on Toolroom, Space Girl on Dirtybird, ‘Play’ on Snatch!, ‘LOL’ on Relief and 2015’s ‘Move Your Body’, which was one of the biggest club records of the year. Similarly impressive was Gene’s ‘Welcome To Chicago EP’, which after its release on Defected Records back in 2003, quickly became a cult classic.

Bruce Botnik has spent the best part of the 2000’s dj’ing. Starting from a techno background, he ventured into electroclash, italo and future-bass, before he happily found his way back to Electro, Ghetto Techno and Hardcore. You might have caught him playing at LAWAAI, Drag Me To Hell, or heard his energetic closing sets at the Los Niños parties. Bruce Botnik is also the curator of the Parties So Secret, Nobody’s There.

Frankie Hollywood Rodriguez began his DJ career spinning in New York at the legendary Electric Circus Along Side International DJ John Jellybean Benitez. After moving to Chicago he began mixing In clubs and on the radio for WGCI (107.5fm) and Later was an original member the world famous Hot Mix Five heard exclusively on the legendary WBMX 102.7fm. When WBMX 102.7 FM was sold Frankie joined WBBM FM (B96) Chicago. He started there as a mix show DJ, then hosted the night show and eventually was the first Mixer to ever move from behind the turntables to hosting a major market morning show (Market #3). During his tenure at B96 Frankie wrote and produced one of the biggest records of the year (The FHR Project - Out Of Control) The FHR Project went on to tour with the Summer MTV Music Festival, Frankie also hosted Street Mix (MTV Europe Dance Music Video Channel) From there Frankie went on to become a Program director and host of the morning show on WBCD, Z105fm in Florida. The station went from the bottom ranks in the market to number one in the rankings in 1 years time. Frankie returned back to Chicago and worked alongside legendary DJ's Steve Dahl, Kevin Mathews & Howard Stern At WCKG 105.9fm Chicago. As An Afternoon drive host. Producing, remixing and spinning in clubs worldwide, Frankie helped introduce House music to the world as we know it today. Frankie has recorded hits for DJ International records And Produced and remixed for major record labels and Artist. Recently this past year (2013) Frankie is mixing live for i101fm Chicago also, Frankie Has headlined the French House Music Festival, Opened up for major recording artist while Directing Hitz Boxing Actuality TV Show Witch has recently surpassed 5 million views on youtube and has been featured on Television & Radio news features and has gained interest from major market broadcasting companies for distribution.
Born Francis Nicholls in the Bronx on January 18, 1955, Knuckles began hitting New York’s after-hours spots such as the Loft, the Sanctuary, Better Days, and Tamburlaine—the clubs where disco was born—as a teenager, along with his best friend, Larry Philpot. By the mid-Seventies, both of them were DJs themselves, and Philpot had changed his surname to Levan. The duo worked together at two of the most important early discos: the Gallery (presided over by Nicky Siano, whose smooth on-beat mixing style was enormously influential) and the Continental Baths, a multi-room gay bathhouse on Manhattan’s West Seventy-fourth Street. (Two other entertainers got their start there: Bette Midler and her pianist, Barry Manilow.) By 1977, both started their own clubs in difference cities. While Levan (who died in 1992) helmed the Paradise Garage in Soho, Knuckles moved to Chicago, where Robert Williams, an old friend of both, was opening what became the Warehouse. A narrow building with oblong windows at 206 South Jefferson St. (today it’s a law office), the Warehouse was where Knuckles began honing his sound and style—”a wide cross-section of music,” as he told The Guardian in 2011. His mélange of disco classics, weird indie-label soul curiosities, the occasional rock track, European synth-disco and all manner of rarities would eventually be codified (at Importes, Etc., the record shop where Knuckles bought much of his music) as “House Music”—short, of course, for the Warehouse. (In 2004, the block where the Warehouse stood was renamed Honorary Frankie Knuckles Way.)
At a time when Saturday Night Fever had cranked up disco’s profile till it blanketed pop culture, Knuckles favored the music’s weirdoes and rebels. He spun tracks on independent labels like Salsoul and cheesy-exotic synth-disco from Italy. He liked things floridly dramatic and stark (First Choice’s “Let No Man Put Asunder,” Black Ivory’s “Mainline”); he liked party conviviality (Positive Choice’s wonderfully loose “We Got the Funk”); he liked genuine strangeness (Two Man Sound’s heavily phased “Que Tal America”). Working with reel-to-reel tape, he’d re-edit his favorite tracks to extend the grooves for his dance floor. “It wasn’t traditional disco like Donna Summer,” Jesse Saunders, another Chicago DJ of the time, said in 1995. “It was really R&B.”
It was also enormously influential. Chicago was a DJ town, with local radio broadcasting several mix shows starting in the late Seventies, and nearly every jock in the city bowed to Frankie. One of the city’s most popular jocks was Farley Keith Williams—then “Funkin'” Farley Keith of WBMX-FM’s Hot Mix 5 DJ team, and later a Chicago house hit-maker as Farley “Jackmaster” Funk. “Honestly, when I started, I didn’t go out buying new records,” Farley said in 2008. “I went out and regurgitated what Frankie Knuckles would play.”

The 1CD Expanded Edition features four previously unearthed recordings including live versions of ‘Devastation’ and ‘Cheree’.

Awa Fall is a rising reggae star, born to a Senegalese father and Italian mother, she started writing, recording and performing at the age of 14. Today, she has toured the world, featured on national television, performed for the UN, FOA Women’s Committee and at major reggae festivals. Awa has shared the stage with major reggae artists such as Alborosie, Africa Unite and has worked with some of the most respected producers and singers in dub, reggae and beyond including; Alpha Steppa, Mad Professor, General Levy, M1 (Dead Prez), Gaudi, Murray Man, Kumar, Charlart58 and Vibronics.
Alpha Steppa (Steppas Records / Dub Dynasty) has been surrounded by soundsystem culture from a young age. As the son and nephew of respected UK dub pioneers Alpha & Omega (Greensleeves) his dubbed out style draws upon the sounds of his musical heritage, filtered through an exploration of reggae, dub, hip hop, lo-fi, sound design, traditional and electronic music. Alpha Steppa has toured the world, produced numerous critically acclaimed albums and most notably developed a dynamic community around his unique sound and conscious message.

Matsuri Digital launches its 2023 release schedule with a stunning remix of a familiar classic by a new artist: Prana's Alien Pets remixed by AliEn resource.
This is the debut release by Japanese artist AliEn resource, a student of the established producer and friend of Matsuri, UNI. This high-power reworking of this legendary Prana track is a complete re-visioning of the track: a deep kick contributes to a very powerful vibe, with new sounds and evocative voices complementing some of the familiar riffs from the 90s classic. Incorporating different harmonies and instrumentation, AliEn resource has created a new masterpiece inspired by the original.

Frankie began his DJ career spinning in New York at the legendary Electric Circus Along Side International DJ John Jellybean Benitez. After moving to Chicago he began mixing In clubs and on the radio for WGCI (107.5fm) and Later was an original member the world famous Hot Mix Five heard exclusively on the legendary WBMX 102.7fm. When WBMX 102.7 FM was sold Frankie joined WBBM FM (B96) Chicago. He started there as a mix show DJ, then hosted the night show and eventually was the first Mixer to ever move from behind the turntables to hosting a major market morning show (Market #3). During his tenure at B96 Frankie wrote and produced one of the biggest records of the year (The FHR Project - Out Of Control) The FHR Project went on to tour with the Summer MTV Music Festival, Frankie also hosted Street Mix (MTV Europe Dance Music Video Channel) From there Frankie went on to become a Program director and host of the morning show on WBCD, Z105fm in Florida. The station went from the bottom ranks in the market to number one in the rankings in 1 years time. Frankie returned back to Chicago and worked alongside legendary DJ's Steve Dahl, Kevin Mathews & Howard Stern At WCKG 105.9fm Chicago. As An Afternoon drive host. Producing, remixing and spinning in clubs worldwide, Frankie helped introduce House music to the world as we know it today. Frankie has recorded hits for DJ International records And Produced and remixed for major record labels and Artist. Recently this past year (2013) Frankie is mixing live for i101fm Chicago also, Frankie Has headlined the French House Music Festival, Opened up for major recording artist while Directing Hitz Boxing Actuality TV Show Witch has recently surpassed 5 million views on youtube and has been featured on Television & Radio news features and has gained interest from major market broadcasting companies for distribution.

A selector, a label entrepreneur, a producer, a master of the airwaves, and a proponent of the breaking down of racial barriers, Konders' spot in the dance music Hall of Fame should be reserved well before any ground-breaking ceremony.
Konders first broke out as one of the higher-profile members of a collective that threw down at a series of parties called Wild Pitch, which helped fill the large shoes left empty by the unfortunate exit of the Paradise Garage. This DJ crew included Victor Rosado, Kenny Carpenter, Nicky Jones, John Robinson, David Camacho, DJ Pierre, and Timmy Richardson -- just to name a few (not to mention occasional appearances by legends Tony Humphries and Tee Scott). Just as Konders likes to point out that everyone bleeds red, he built his reputation as a DJ and producer on finding the common thread that runs throughout several styles of music: hip-hop, reggae, disco, house. During the late '80s and early '90s, Konders issued a series of productions on the Nu Groove label that went down well with the underground. At the height of house music's flirtation with mainstream appeal, Konders and his Massive Sounds crew landed on Polygram for a self-titled album. Unsurprisingly, the material proved to be too raw and not pop enough to cross over, so Konders and company happily remained outside of the general public's consciousness.
In the early '90s, Konders and partner Jabba formed Massive B Sound System, which has served as both a production outlet and as a formidable radio presence, bringing reggae of the dancehall variety to the listeners of New York's Hot 97.1 FM. Konders and Jabba have also taken their sound system to a number of other continents. In addition to cultivating talent for Massive B, Konders has remixed and produced for artists like Aswad, Shabba Ranks, Ziggy Marley, and Supercat. In 2002, Konders and Massive Sounds' back catalog of productions was anthologized with A Lost Era in NYC 1987-1992, a disc that focused on the man's trademark deep house/reggae hybrids.

Only first part of the total recording, but 45 mins. of Farley on WBMX is worth it. Farley first made his name broadcasting on Chicago's WBMX-FM as a member of the Hot Mix 5 DJ team. Farley also appeared at the Warehouse club and then began a residency at the Playground.
Known as Farley Keith or Farley Funkin' Keith until 1984. He then adopted the name Farley "Jackmaster" Funk and together with Jesse Saunders, created the first house single to reach the UK charts. His anthem Love Can't Turn Around (cover of Isaac Hayes' I Can't Turn Around) made the Top Ten in mid-1986. By the late '80s, he had lost his DJ residency. His recorded output during the '90s was relatively small, preferring to concentrate on performing on the global DJ circuit.
Mick Wills starts his dj-career in 1986 at the tender age of 14, playing at small private parties in his hometown in the south of germany. he plays anything from new wave to hi nrg, and when he discovers techno, acid, and new beat in the late 80’s, there is no more stopping him. he can recite the mailorder hotline number from the hardwax record store in his sleep, but also finds old disco and funk records on fleamarkets and on record fairs. In 1994, one night he spins together with dj hell. hell is impressed: he gives wills the chance to spin in the legendary ultraschall in munich, also based on the mixtapes that wills keeps handing over to hell. around the same time he starts organizing parties in and around the city of stuttgart with his friend isabella venis. under the moniker of ‘mb presents’ the duo bring artists like klangstabil, keith tucker, hell, anthony “shake” shakir, jonzon, claus bachor, roland casper, miss kittin and the hacker, john selway, trike, terence fixmer, jay denham, electric indigo, inform3r, legowelt, tlr, orgue electronique, i-f, rude 66 and gitano d.j. (member of the polygamy boys) to their city. in 1996 he collaborates with klangstabil’s maurizio blanco in the studio and he knows from that moment that he wants to produce records as well as play them. as wills doesn’t like to do things half, it takes him several years to get a studio together and learn all the tricks of the trade, so on each of his following records you can hear wills’ progress in the studio. he records his first tracks in 2001, and hell’s gigolo label immediately bites. the atomic ep that also includes a remake of bobby orlando’s “calling all the boys” by the kinky lovers (mick wills & isabella venis) is a success and two other mick wills releases and one track on the cd nine follow. while signed to gigolo, his dj-career takes off. with germany not big enough anymore, ‘the gigolo from porschetown’, spins blistering sets in places as diverse as mayday in dortmund 2005, barcelona’s loft, and clubs in valencia, moscow, london, athens, budapest, bukarest, etc. his sets are described as ‘universal, global and neo-retrolectro’. they mix the best of over 25 years of dance music in a way that few dj’s can, effortlessly switching between the cutting edge of today’s sounds and vintage chicago, detroit, italo, hi nrg, wave, acid and electro. wills is a true music freak, an avid record collector and really does play like every night is his last. again and again and again...

Daniele Baldelli
In the late ’70s Baldelli took up a residency at Cosmic, a nightclub by Lake Garda, and rose to stardom with his experimental mixing style. He combined an extremely diverse range of genres, from European electronica to reggae, synth pop to African folk, often played at improper speeds and mixed with effects and drum machines. Baldelli’s worldly and hypnotic sets fathered the cosmic sound, a movement that set itself apart from the Italo disco scene. The DJ and producer who is now considered an innovator in the Italian disco scene for developing a unique, 'funky' and 'tribal' aesthetic by playing eclectic, esoteric records at drastically altered speeds, often slowed way down, and sometimes adding drum machines and effects. He developed the style he like to call "Cosmic Sound" . He start to be a Dj in 1969 . He was resident DJ at the Baia Degli Angeli (1977–1978) and Cosmic (1979–1984) discothèques in Northern Italy - Lasize _Lago di Garda ; he released scores of mixtapes during his tenure at the latter. He was mostly unknown outside of Italy until a surge of English-language press coverage in the second half of the 2000s.
Claudio Tosi Brandi
Also known as DJ T.B.C. It was 1978 and after have studied guitar in conservatory, played in groups and worked in at a radio station (Radio Sabbia) for a year Brandi decided to become a DJ in a period it was a profession that did not exist. He started to work in the mythical Papillon a discotheque in Riccione, it was the period of the Baia degli Angeli
(Bay of the Angels) with the two DJ Americans Bob Day and Tom Season (first mix DJ's in Italy). In that period the discotheques where divided in two
musical kinds; the disco and the funky music but he played all styles (Funkattaro), and even what now seems an authentic performance to put 45 to 33 and viceversa. His style got noticed and soon he would play at various locations aslike the Cosmic (1980-1984).

Saskia Slegers, better known as Miss Djax, or as many say 'The Acid Queen', is living proof that age doesn't necessarily always brings peace. For 25 years now, she has stomped on the face of techno and acid with hard punishing beats and radioactive sounds. The ferocious releases on her Djax-Up-Beats label helped Chicago and Detroit sounds gain foothold in Europe, as Djax Records was one of the first European labels to put out techno in the early nineties. Now 25 years later Djax can look back at an impressive catalog of over 400 releases!
