I met Ciara through mutual friends, and she spent a day with us at our farm school to teach a soap-making class. I was not only blown away by the high-quality products and methods that she used, but was incredibly inspired by her family's story and intention for this business that stretches far beyond just skincare. @faithfullynaturalsoapco is not just providing families with the best products for your skin, but they are also supporting local farms and businesses AND ministering to their customers.
Check out their story below:
"Michael and I met in 2012, we have 2 children and boxer named Duke. We’ve had a wild ride these past 10 years that have landed us in our current season as entrepreneurs. Michael was a NYC Ironworker building some of the biggest bridges and steel buildings. I work full time from home for an insurance company. In 2021,God called us to step away from Michaels Career, sell our home, and leave NYS. We have always been very handy and love a good DIY project, so when I took a soap making class, it was only natural that evolved into this amazing business. We started Faithfully Natural Soap Co. with the intentions of connecting with other family owned businesses through the state and country to source high- quality skin nourishing ingredients to help empower people to know what they were bringing into their homes.
We strive to bring things back to the basics. We are more than a soap shop, and we are getting back to our roots and helping other families along the way.
We want to empower people to break free of the mainstream, read labels, and provide you with the highest quality skincare.
We locally source all our Tallow/Lard as well as Beeswax Capping and Medicinal Herbs. Our soap accessories are all made in the USA by other small business owners.
As a family, we are committed to putting God first and walking through all doors with faith that he has opened, and we can’t thank you enough for being along for the ride. From our family to yours."
In this episode, Ciara will inspire you with her story and share great ways to get started living a cleaner and healthier lifestyle through high-quality skincare.

Their story is incredible...you don't want to miss this one!
"They have devoted their lives to pursuing Christ, strengthening their marriage, and discipling their children as they prepare them to be truth bearers who will share the love and message of Jesus Christ with a lost generation."
"Their story started in the late 90’s, with a bumpy beginning. These young teenagers found themselves searching for fulfillment and purpose but found themselves stuck in addiction and bound by depression. Teenage pregnancy changed the trajectory of their lives and shortly after welcoming their first child, they married.
The early years of their marriage was evidence of the brokenness and lack of hope in their lives. Addiction and unhealthy behaviors continued to plague their relationship, until God began a work within their hearts that would forever change the course of their family.
God brought Topher to the end of himself, as he tried and failed many times to walk away from a life of bondage. He knew God had more for his life. After days of fasting and prayer, Topher experienced the power of the Holy Spirit in a new way, breaking the chains of addiction, and forever impacting his life - work, home and relationships.
A newfound calling was placed upon their hearts to raise their children for the purpose of advancing the Gospel, and from that day forward, they surrendered to having as many children as the Lord wills and to raise them in the ways of the Lord.
Today, Topher and Laura have a story that is built upon 20 years of marriage, 11 children, and 16 years of homeschooling that is evidence of their devotion to fulfilling that calling and mission. The impact of their dedication is now being seen in the next generation as they welcomed their first grandchild in the Fall of 2022. This joyous occasion was a sweet reminder that the raising and training of their children will extend for generations to come, leaving a legacy for Christ that will extend beyond their lifetime.
As the founders of Heart 2 Heart Ministries, Topher and Laura are committed to encouraging and serving the next generation of young families as they learn to build healthy marriages, navigate the highs and lows of parenting, homeschool, and ultimately answer the call to teach, train, and disciple their children."

Oh this episode!
I was so honored to have Home Tribe Founder and CEO, Emily Jones, on the show to talk about real and truthful ideas around home education and the power we have as parents to equip and lead our children.
I love this quote by Emily:
"When you are tired, remember who you are and what your assignment is. You are super heroes appointed to rescue, equip, and lead your children. Own that."
Along with debunking myths and chatting about helpful tips and ideas, Emily also shared this verse with us that reminds us that what we lack in our weaknesses is fulfilled by Jesus and is perfect power. We must rely on Him when we feel like we cannot continue.
But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.
2 Corinthians 12:9
I pray you will leave this episode with a better understanding of the purpose and power of home education.

This conference was everything. It provided incredible inspiration, content, and reassurance about this life decision that we made as a family, and will likely help you too if you have or are at least thinking about homeschooling.
"We are the movers. The changers. The peacekeepers. The teachers. The comforters. The brave ones. The weird ones. The risk-takers. The adventurers. The make-believers. The explorers. The ones determined to reclaim our children’s childhoods right within the walls of our homes, on the trails in the woods, and among the songs and stories we share together."
We, as Ainsley Arment says, “are here to create a home where we can forge our own path to love stronger, live more fully, and grow closer to each other.”

“You are the curator of their childhood. You are the one who can show them the joys of a simple life. Teach them to appreciate what is around them. Practice slow living, don’t rush through life with them. Have them bake the cookies, even if it takes longer. Get the Play-Doh out and let them make a mess. Go on a walk, even though you don’t really feel like it. Read them lots of stories. Sing plenty of songs. -A Homemade Education (Shelby Dersa)

Let us protect and honor the sacredness of childhood and our relationship with God's natural world while fostering the development of the whole child. Let us help them become who they are called to be in this world.
"Educating our children is an offering of love we make to the God who was so gracious to bestow them upon us in the first place. Every moment of the daily grind in raising and teaching and loving on them is hallowed, because we do it for Him and because there would be no point of doing it without Him.” - Sarah Mackenzie
Let's chat about and reflect on an amazing book, Call of the Wild and Free, by Ainsley Arment and three (of many) important things she shares:
BE BRAVE
Ainsley says:
“No matter the reason, you are reading this book because you have heard the call, and you have answered it. You too believe that childhood is a time to foster wonder, creativity, and discovery through play and exploration. You believe children learn because they want to, not because they’re forced to. And you believe in letting them learn at their own pace.”
RECLAIM CHILDHOOD
“Homeschooling should never be about what we are keeping from our children; rather, it should be about what we are giving to them. The net result is a reclamation of childhood.”
A NEW KIND OF HOMESCHOOL
“Most objections to homeschooling come from adults who cite the impossible challenge of replicating the classroom at home.”
This was a big one for me as former teacher turned homeschool mom. I tried to replicate school at home, and it just didn’t work. When you switch your lens to see that education at home is not public school at home, your entire experience will change for the better.
“You can’t go wrong. There may be times when you’ll need to put down the work, call it quits for the day, for the week. But you are no longer bound by the constraints of an eight-to-three education. Your children are always learning. You don’t have to instill the desire to learn in them. They are born to learn. Let’s release them back into their natural habitat and watch them thrive.”
“A magical childhood isn’t about having the best toys, gadgets, and vacations. It’s actually the opposite. It’s about simplicity. A magical childhood is about freedom. Freedom to explore, discover, and play.”

"U.S. stores report an estimated 40 percent shortage of infant formula, causing stress, anger and even panic among parents, grandparents and other caregivers who rely on formula to sustain their little one."
"Parents of formula-fed babies are encouraged to reach out to friends, family members and local mom groups for help. "I feel like our only recourse is parents helping other parents," Kraft says. 'This is a situation where we have to understand that these are all our babies. We need to work together to help.'"
So I say this prayer with a heavy mama heart with hope that this crisis will end as soon as possible. This prayer also sends each and every mama a glimmer of hope that there is light at the end of the tunnel and serves as a reminder that there ARE people out there want and willing to help. Find THOSE people and walk right past the conflicts you might stumble upon. You know what you have to do for your child.
“From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked” (Luke 12:48).
“With great power comes great responsibility.”
"We have been given much, and God desires us to use what He has given to further His Kingdom and proclaim His glory. It’s what we were created to do. “Then Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. . . . For the Son of Man . . . will reward each person according to what they have done’” (Matthew 16:24–25, 27). We are living sacrifices (Romans 12:1), giving the things God has given us in service to others, and in that we actually find life. God, the giver of all good things (James 1:17), gives us everything we need to fulfill His will. “Freely you have received; freely give” (Matthew 10:8)."
"Lord, I trust in you and lean on you. I thank you for your mercy and provision for me and my family. I come to you again and ask that your will be done in this situation we are currently facing. Guard my heart and my mind and keep me focused on your will. Lord, please send your Holy Spirit to breathe your peace into my soul and walk with me on this journey."

Why is our presence so important? Our presence is important because we are a constant model and reminder for our kids of how to approach the world. How to raise a family. How to love and serve in a marriage. How to approach and solve problems. How to love and serve God and serve the world through His love. How to embrace this amazing life we have here for a small amount of time. How to live. How to love. How to fully embrace those moments together.
“What if, instead of trying to make the most of our time, we worked harder at savoring it?”
― Sarah Mackenzie
“Some people call it multi-tasking, as though it’s a skill to be desired and honed, but I know it’s really a lack of focus-a refusal to seek out the important things.”
― Sarah Mackenzie
This episode focuses on ways to plan for being present, eliminating guilt, and honoring our values with our schedules. What's important for your family? Does your life honor that?
Try to make presence a daily goal until it becomes an actual habit!
In our eyes, we can never do or be enough for our kids when in fact, we are exactly who our kids need. You have been created in His image to raise these kids. Yes. You. The one who constantly questions…overthinks…and worries. There is just A LOT going on right now swirling around you all while you are just wanting to raise these little ones and have some fun in there, too. Am I right?
Honestly, the best mom you can be is a happy and present one. Your “to do” list will NEVER end…but you can pick away at it AND include that non-negotiable time with you kids.
As a homeschool mama, I get to be with my kids all day and every day. It’s amazing…and can be overwhelming at times. But we also have to find time to just “be.” For us, it’s making a snack and reading together or getting outside to explore and unwind. Find what works for your family and start doing it NOW. This quote sums it up:
“No one will ever say, no matter how good a parent he or she was, “I think I spent too much time with my children when they were young.”
― Sarah Mackenzie

According to the US Census Bureau (USCB) Household Pulse Survey, "the number of parents choosing to homeschool grew from 3.2 million to at least 5 million between March 2020 and the start of the 2020–21 school year."
Homeschooling parents aren't going anywhere. More families are starting to homeschool these days, and they are often unsure of the style of homeschooling to choose.
"Homeschooling can be as traditional as "school-at-home" programs where students study the same stuff at home as do their peers at the local school. Or homeschooling can be as radical as "Unschooling" education where the lessons are student-directed explorations devoid of homework and tests.
"Bear in mind, there is considerable overlap between many of these educational models. This means that there is plenty of room, if needed, to share and borrow ideas between styles. Homeschool teachers typically mix methods and materials liberally. But to avoid any unsavory creations, it’s probably best to get a good working knowledge of your teaching materials and methods before splicing them with others."
There are tons of styles out there ! This episode will share about them briefly, and I highly encourage you to do your own reflection and research on those that tug at your heart.
Examples of Styles:
-School at Home
-Unit Studies
-Classical
-Montessori
-Waldorf
-Charlotte Mason
-Relaxed
-Unschooling
-and more!
Questions to ask:
What’s your child’s learning style? What’s your teaching style? What does your family enjoy? How many children do you have? Ages? Special needs to consider? What is your homeschool budget? How much screen time? Are you incorporating your faith? What is your belief/philosophy about learning? What is your schedule like? Do you work? Do you have a business? Do you travel?
This is an on-going and evolving thing! Here are important things to remember from the amazing Sarah Mackenzie:
“A peaceful and happy mother is the real key to successful homeschooling.”
*What is true about you? What in your heart is good and true about homeschooling for you? Only you know that.
“I became a peaceful and happy homeschooling mom when I learned to be content with my own preferences and no longer strove to be like the women whose strengths are different from my own.”*
Finding your homeschooling style takes trial and error and just time. Try things out…see how they work for you and your kids…adjust and move forward.
Leave you with this: ‘“Take a deep breath, mama. This isn’t as dependent on you as you think it is. Give God your “Here I am. Use me.” Let Him carry the burden.’

We are called to a purpose in this life…and it’s the journey to find that calling that we often find ourselves on.
My devotional this week touched on how "often do we allow fear to paralyze us. We sit and wait until we are no longer afraid, when we could have acted long before. God has a plan in place for you, and it may require you to step out of the realm of your comfort zone. You may be uncomfortable. You may be scared. You may not feel that you are ready, but you will be when it’s time.”
This may mean in business…in homeschooling…or in spreading the good news of Jesus Christ.
God is greater than your fear of failure. So, what does this mean? How does this apply to your life? What makes you feel alive? What makes you stir inside? What can YOU offer to the world?
Why does failure scare us so much? So what if an idea doesn’t carry itself through? Who said any of this was going to be perfect? It’s not going to be. Let that perfection GO!
What are you called for? Everyone’s calling will be different…and it should be. Think of all the different people out there in the world who are waiting to be changed by YOU.
If you are feeling a pull to something new and maybe even scary, I give you permission to explore it a little more. Give your self even an hour to find out what you’d have to do to start, what you’d have to invest in it (time and resources), and who can help you do it. Write notes/steps down on our memo pad on your phone, planner, journal, or word doc on your computer. JUST START.
Give yourself a few weeks to just start picking away at it…and see what happens! You have so much to give to this world through so many different outlets…and people are waiting for YOU! Even if it doesn’t seem like a big thing…it will be to the people you are serving.

Ever wonder how to teach your kids to fight fear, live bravely, and overcome hard things? Ever been nervous that your child won’t have the life-skills and character that you hope they will?
Today, we’re going to break it all down and know exactly how to raise kids with grit.
“Life is full of hard things. Full of them. Learning to walk is tough. Growing up is challenging. Learning to become a good spouse is no easy feat, settling into the role of mother is hard. Hard. Hard. Hard. So why wouldn't we want to prepare our kids to handle hard things well—to not balk at the pressure? Why shouldn't we seek to give them eyes that see beyond what's right in front of them, intentionally training them and equipping them with the tools to handle hard things?”
"Parenting brave requires the very same thing of us that we are trying to train in our kids, making decisions not based solely on what is right in front of us, but with the end result in mind. In this case that would be responsible and capable adults."
We aren’t helping our kids when we make things painless. We can’t always rescue them and must let them struggle with real-life issues. This is how they develop courage, discipline, resilience, and character.
Michael Godfrey shared this:
Paul says in Philippians 3:12 -14, “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus”
Paul previously says in 1 Corinthians 15:10 (NIV) “But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them — yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.” So through grace, we can have endurance, perseverance and grit.
So, you will often have to make those tough decisions, stand firm in your choices, and often just sit back a little so that they may bravely learn that life will through a lot of curveballs…but it’s how you handle it that matters. It’s how you raise them that matters. It’s how you remind them that they are loved by you and by God…no matter what.

We are currently observing a moment of devastating loss, destruction, and, at the same time, absolute heroism as Russia attempts to invade Ukraine as the people of Ukraine defend their home.
So, how can we help during this time of feeling helpless AND how do we love on our children who are also watching, listening, and processing all of this.
The Lord continues to do what He needs to do. We must continue to trust Him no matter what is happening in our world, and we must share this with our kids as they face current events and their future.
Find out ways to support your children during this time in a very raw and honest episode.
No matter what conflict is taking place, parents want to make sure that their kids feel safe and loved. Check out this episode for some support and a few ideas.

“The home is the first and most effective place to learn the lessons of life: truth, honor, virtue, self-control, the value of education, honest work, and the purpose and privilege of life. Nothing can take the place of home in rearing and teaching children, and no other success can compensate for failure in the home.”
-David O. McKay
One of the biggest mistakes a homeschooling parent can make is to jump right into homeschooling without a solid mission and plan of what he/she wants to accomplish at home in his/her home education.
Your homeschool mission is the foundation the rest of your homeschool year is built upon. Keeping it as a visual reminder will help you stay on track and grounded with what you want for your family and your child’s education.
Lean into this statement on the hard days, and I promise that it will help push you through to brighter days.
Listen to this episode for the six steps to get you started!

Did you know that the first thing you do in the morning will affect the rest of your day?
Do you have a morning routine? Do you wake up frazzled when your kids come rushing in? All of this can have immense influence on how your day goes.
Whether you homeschool or not a morning routine is essential to feeling grounded and centered for your busy day.
There have been MANY rough days when I had little patience, more frustration, and a lot more yelling. I realized that on those days, I often did not enjoy my morning routine.
The most successful people in the world have a morning routine/ritual and start their day while others are still snoring.
Why shouldn’t this apply to those of us doing such an important job as raising and teaching our children?
“You’ll never change your life until you change something you do daily. The secret to your success is found in your daily routine.” John C. Maxwell
“Creating a healthy daily routine keeps you grounded and can have a big impact on your physical and mental health.”
Are you tired of what’s going on right now in schools or have been for a long time?
Are you stuck with what to do next?
Are you considering homeschooling, but you have no idea of where to start?
Are you looking for a roadmap to successful homeschooling?

If you are a parent, chances are you have spent a lot of time wondering how, where, and when your child will be educated for the 2021-2022 school year.
The question for many is which avenue to take, and many people confuse online school, remote learning, and homeschool with each other. In fact, many people think they are all the same thing.
This episode will give insight into the real challenge parents have right now deciding the best educational path for their kids in a pandemic AND explain the difference between online school, remote learning, and homeschooling.
Only you can decide what educational route is best for your family given the current situation in your home, district, and state.
I hope this episode has helped clarify these three options and motivated you to do your research and make changes that you feel compelled to make for the best interest of your children.
I highly suggesting sitting down together as a family and talking about what vision you have for the education of your kiddos and how you as a family can make that education possible.
Literally write it down, go back to it, change it, and put things into action.

We’ve been called. We have to be brave, bold, and strong for our little humans that God so graciously gave us. What an honor that was given to us by Him for a reason. What a responsibility that often feels way too big…but let’s remember that we were chosen for this by God…and we have to trust his judgement and his belief in us. Despite what we have always heard…we CAN be a mother and a teacher. Mothers ARE teachers.
We’ve been called to pour into our kids who will be the future. They are the next generation. They are worth pouring into daily, and that can start right at home. It’s not easy…it’s a huge responsibility…and it takes everything we have in us.
I want moms to confidently feel that they can rise up and teach their kids at home if they are unhappy with what’s going on in schools today.
I know because I did that and experienced ALL of that…especially watching my students struggle, cry on assessment days, attempt to read and write with little confidence, only read when they had to, and miss out on those experiences that only childhood really provides.
“Either we create a space where reading is something that is done for the joy of it, where the imagination is cultivated and allowed to wander and stretch and grow, or we deaden our children’s natural love for the written word.”
-Sarah Mackenzie
“We literally school the love of reading right out of our kids, and then we worry because they aren’t taken up with a voracious love of literature and a burning desire to enjoy reading for pleasure.”
-Sarah Mackenzie
So, this episode is really for the mama who has this decision on her heart or has already made the decision to homeschool, but is absolutely terrified of doing it “wrong.”
Let’s stop worrying about messing up and doing it perfectly and more about offering a space of love, support, and meeting our kids right where they are. About slowing down and being intentional about our time and our teaching.
Let’s focus more on WHY we are choosing to teach at home and why we want to make meaningful connections with our kids. Why we are choosing to show up for them them every single day. Why we rearrange schedules with our spouses to co-parent and teach and make it work. Why many still work full-time and homeschool…yes…that’s possible! Why we are aren’t settling anymore for what’s going on today, and we’re taking it into our own hands. They’re our kids…and it’s time.
So, where do you start?

"The true aim of education is to order a child’s affections – to teach him to love what he ought and hate what he ought. Our greatest task, then, is to put living ideas in front of our children like a feast. We have been charged to cultivate the souls of our children, to nourish them in truth, goodness, and beauty, to raise them up in wisdom and eloquence. It is to those ends that we labor.”

Join me for this open and honest conversation we recorded in the fall about motherhood, loss, music, friendship, and chasing those dreams with Courtney Dashe and Morgan Leigh Garner of Hadley Park.
As we raise our young kiddos, we continue to follow our dreams because we want our children to know.: "Mama had me and kept going. Mama was present AND chased her dreams."
Nashville singer/songwriters Courtney Dashe and Morgan Leigh Garner met in a blind co-write in 2013. Upon discovering they were both pregnant and due weeks apart, they became fast friends, bonding over impending motherhood and songwriting.
When daughters Hadley and Parker were born only four days apart, Dashe and Garner began their journey of chasing dreams and raising babies together... daughters in tow... and thus, Hadley Park, the duo, was formed.
Since then, Hadley Park’s songs have been featured on Netflix production, “The Ranch,” Spotify’s “Wild Country” and “New Music Nashville” playlists, Sirius XM’s “The Highway,” the Country Network, and CMT.com.
They launched their new podcast “Chasing Dreams & Raising Babies” in conjunction with the release of their new music project entitled “Time’s a Thief” on May 1st, 2021.

I share our journey to this decision, how God guided us in this direction, why we as mamas/parents need to be involved in our children’s education, why we need to listen to what He tells us, and why we need to do what’s best for OUR family.
Every situation is different. This is our story, and I hope it inspires you, motivates you, and encourages you to make the best decisions for your family without the anxiety, guilt or shame.
We have just started this journey…and I will tell you…we have had great days…and we have had frustrating days. Mostly due to the fact that we are adjusting things with our two-year old in mind, but it has already gotten easier!
I hope this episode (and the continued discussion that will follow) will inform you, inspire you, and encourage you. I hope it will answer questions you might have about learning at home. I hope it will remind you that even if you don’t homeschool, God brought these children to YOU. You are their greatest teacher…and you don’t need a teaching certificate for that. You are their guide. You are their inspiration. You will always be…their mama.

"In a recent study, 84% of parents agreed that family meals were important, but only 50% of family dinners were eaten together."
Who gathers at your table? How often? Is it sacred time or time served distracted and disengaged?
Today, we are talking all about the importance of gathering at the table with your family to share yummy food and connect and reflect together.
It’s a time when all technology is off and out of arms reach (we DO play quiet music in the background), and every member of the family has a chance to share about his/her day.
The table is a very intentional space that serves a far greater purpose than just eating a specific meal.
This is especially the case right now as many are distanced by space, masks, differences, and more. Gathering at the kitchen table might be exactly what we all need more of.
During my research for this episode, blog after blog mentioned the same idea…that gathering around the table is sacred and powerful.
“The table might not be new, but it’s as necessary today as it was in Jesus’ day and Israel’s history. We need space to regain perspective and reorient our focus back toward others and the things that matter most. So dust off your dining room furniture, pull up a few extra chairs, and make a simple meal. You might just find the life-giving grace of Jesus flowing from that space as you pass the bread and raise your cup.”
The thing is…if we don’t capture our family in moments such as these…they will be pulled further and further away by social media, cell phones, differences of opinions, friends, etc. Sitting together at the table for all or most meals during the week will provide an intentional set time to make powerful connections with your children and spouse. It is truly a fundamental piece to establishing healthy, open, and positive relationships with your kids. We are also teaching them how to be effective communicators and how to socialize in a dinner setting.
What Are Some Family Questions??
Tell us the best part of your day. Tell us the worst part of your day.
What great book did you read or have read to you?
How did you help today?
How did you show God’s love?
This or That questions
What’s one thing that helped you grow or become better?
What’s something funny that happened?
What’s one thing you are grateful for today?
Gathering at the table with your kids will check so many boxes:
-build relationships
-teach communication skills
-make connections
-offer advice/guidance
This month, it’s all about getting in the kitchen with your kids and gathering at the table with them is a highly impactful way to teach them how to cook and how to enjoy a meal with others.
How will you gather around your table this week?

This month is all about ways to incorporate cooking, healthy snacking, and gathering at the table together. Whatever your family dynamic is - make it a priority this month to sit at the table together more often. Make it a priority to make a new recipe together…even if it’s chaotic and messy because it really isn’t the end product, but rather the experiences they are having with YOU.

As we start another school year with uncertainty, anxiousness, and a heavy amount of anxiety, let’s remember our role as mamas (parents) and what we can do for our kids at this moment in time.
Let us offer our child solid ground, familiarity, and support while showing up for them every single day.
Our support should be meaningful and intentional. We should look at them and say:
“No, [their name], I am REALLY proud of you for ________. I am proud of you every single day, and I love you.”
You just assume they know it. You need to tell them - and tell them often.
This is not to make them arrogant or full of themselves. This is to remind them that they are loved, have immense value in this world, and that they are here on purpose.
When I had first started teaching English as a Second Language several years ago, one of my supervisors/mentors shared this with me, and I’ve carried it on when created The Whole Mama and especially when thinking about the whole child.
She said, instead of just teaching skill by skill, start thinking and teaching from the end result and go backwards.
In other words, imagine what you want your students to know at the end of this lesson (or even the end of the year) and refocus that understanding through everything you do with them. Wow.
This is the same with being a parent. We have to think about where we want our kids to be in terms of academics, character, faith, and overall as a whole person.
So, if we want them to have a full cup and feel confident and content in their skills, we need to start filling that cup for them so that even if it gets tipped over a little sometimes by other kids or adults with constructive criticism or even mean comments, they are so solid in their foundation that it doesn’t matter!
Not only that, we also just want to start of this year on as much of a positive note as possible. With all of the chaos and craziness swirling around them at all times, we can offer one, consistent, and powerful thing to them…every damn day.
They need to know that we are proud of them, we keep going and working hard no matter what, and at the end of the day, they should go to bed feeling proud of the work and effort that they put into that day.
Can I get an amen?!?!
Let's start this year with a bang!

It was an honor to chat with my friend and fellow podcaster, Eric Egan, in this episode about speaking confidently and raising little humans.
He is our first DADDY on The Whole Mama podcast and husband to my dear friend and previous podcast guest, Tricia! We talked all about overcoming anxiety, learning from our failures, and the important role fathers have today.
We also chatted about teaching our children the importance of eye contact, communicating effectively, telling a good story, and how much our kids can actually teach us these days.
Eric has worked in broadcast news for almost two decades and is also the creator of the Speakeasy Podcast with Eric Egan. He is a journalist, storyteller, speaking specialist and coach who pulls from years of on-air experience to share his proven approach to public speaking. He focuses on helping his listeners feel confident in speaking in different settings and putting the best methods into practice to successfully share information, a message, and ideas to others.
Eric is the father of three beautiful children and absolutely loves spending time with his family. He hopes his children will learn the importance of kindness and empathy from him and recognizes that his relationship with their mama is critically important to the dynamic of their family.
I truly enjoyed relating to, laughing with, and learning from Eric. I hope you enjoy this episode as well.

One of the greatest gifts you can give your child is to teach them to serve others.
How can we teach our children to naturally offer to help others?
Today I want to focus on something I heard while listening to a Christian radio station the other day. It was so profound that I had to share it and tie it into this episode because it fit so perfectly.
They were talking about raising kids these days, and one single phrase they suggested teaching our children that will change their lives forever. It resonated so much with me because looking back, it’s exactly what my parents taught and instilled in me and many I grew up with were also taught. We must truly continue to teach this…or we are really going to suffer in the future.
The question is simply this: How can I help? Or worded another way…What can I do to help?
This phrase opens the door for our children to openly and whole-heartedly offer assistance and serve others…whether they are tired, overworked, or annoyed. It is knowing that it’s the right thing to do.
It cancels out a selfish heart. It cancels out greediness. It cancels out all of those negative characteristics.
It offers your child the opportunity to quite possibly be the ONLY ONE who offers it. The chance to show others what SHOULD be done. It offers your child the chance to model what being a good person…a follower of Jesus…a vessel of his love…looks like with a simple yet profound sentence.
You see…as The Whole Mama has grown and reached so many families…I have found more and more that truly believe that we as mamas (and parents) are the true teachers for our kids. Life goes far beyond what we read in a textbook or answer on a test. Our job as mothers (parents) is to find opportunities and teachable moments to offer our children. You don’t need a teaching degree for that…just an open heart.
We must follow our calling and responsibility as their parents to build their character, teach them right from wrong, model how to treat others, and more than anything…teach our children that true happiness will come when their hearts are full and their hands are serving.
Now I said this question, “How can I help?” but let us also remember that this phrase may just be offered through action. Teach your child to be “that kid”…the one who cared. The one who thought about you more than him/herself. The one who know the right thing to do…not for pride or personal gains, but because it was what God would have wanted him/her to do. Nothing more.
During a time such as this, when so much anger, resentment, judgement, frustration, and fear linger in the air, teach your child to keep the phrase, “How can I help?” in their hands and on their hearts. For we all know that these words open the doors to new relationships, opportunities, and even more, they ground our children in the understanding that life is more than what’s on the screen, what people say or think about them, or even about THEM. It will remind them of the bigger purpose here on Earth…that our good works show others HIS love and grace for the world.
"Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work."

Today is all about how we can pour into ourselves. It is refreshing, it is revitalizing, and it is necessary.
Motherhood sure offers us a rollercoaster of emotions. We willingly accept this responsibility with an open heart as it feels like a calling from God. A calling to bring new little people into this world and somehow raise and shape them into the best version of themselves.
It sure isn't easy...but I wouldn't change it for the world.
Remember that you are a powerful and resilient mother and teacher living a life of love and abundance. You deserve a minute.
Why is self-care important for mothers?
Taking time to pour into yourself is beneficial because it helps you better serve those you love most AND helps you feel energized, grounded, and ready to then pour into your family.
The recent article below provides great information for new moms and ANY moms who really need to put their needs further up on the priority list.

“There is something delicious about writing the first words of a story. You never quite know where they’ll take you.”
― Beatrix Potter
These days, it can often be challenging to instill a love of writing in our kiddos who are constantly bombarded by games, YouTube, movies, and shows. In fact, many kids (including my own) love to watch OTHER kids play instead of engaging in that enjoyment themselves.
It can often be challenging to have them sit, use their imagination, and start writing their OWN story. Shoot there were many times when I was teaching when a student would even say, “I don’t know what to draw.”
What is happening?!?!
Where are our creators and inventors? Where are our pages of stories of dragons, adventurers, astronauts, monsters, and imaginary creatures?
Even into middle and high school…are our teens writing at a level that will help them excel in college and in life?
Writing is a skill that all children need to acquire and do well at in order succeed in this world. They need to be able to thoughtfully and confidently communicate their thoughts, feelings, and ideas for others to read and understand.
They need guidance, encouragement, and the opportunity to express themselves through writing without being assessed, corrected, or discouraged.
Sadly, the stats today about young people writing are heart-breaking.
"Three-quarters of both 12th and 8th graders lack proficiency in writing, according to the most recent National Assessment of Educational Progress. And 40 percent of those who took the ACT writing exam in the high school class of 2016 lacked the reading and writing skills necessary to complete successfully a college-level English composition class, according to the company’s data."
We as parents can change these numbers simply by offering some guidance at home.
How can we encourage and support our kids to start writing and write well?
Tips:
Focus on interests
Help you child grow and improve on the level he/she is on right now.
Journal together daily
Draw and dictate
Shared pen
Great Name Activities at The Reading Mama blog: https://www.pinterest.com/thisreadingmama/name-activities/
The goal here is to get your kiddo open to and excited about sharing their ideas (which are important and have value) confidently on paper.
-Consistency – they can’t just practice once a week!
-Encouragement – encourage the scribbles, the sounding out, and the creation of a sentence.
-Make it fun and blend into activities
-Offer fun writing materials and tools…silly pencils, colored pencils, fun erasers, and more!
Start that foundation and just make the task more and more complex.
A love for writing starts at an early age, and the Raising Whole Writers Course will help foster that love immediately!
The course is intended for parents of children at the Pre-K through 2nd grade level or for any struggling writer have a difficult time putting their thoughts on paper.
I would rather prepare them on the front-end proactively than try to reactively teach them to write while their classmates are passing them by. I can help you do that!

“Reports say 78% of moms say they put off taking care of their own health to care for family members.”
Let’s think about this, if we move our self-care to the top of the priority list (and make it a non-negotiable item without feeling a sense of guilt for doing so), we are positioning ourselves to be a happier, healthier, and better mama overall for your kids.
Emma Bennett, LCSW, who specializes in working with new moms. "We need to nurture ourselves just like we nurture our children. If we don't take care of ourselves, feelings of depletion, resentment, and isolation could potentially arise. I feel more centered and present after taking time to engage in self-care, and strongly believe in building it into my daily agenda."
This is key. Building your self-care into your daily schedule – without pushing it or moving it back – allows for you to regroup, refocus, and breathe. And we know this…if we DON’T build it into our schedule like everything else we do for the family…it’s not going to happen. So choose something that is a non-negotiable for you on a DAILY basis…sleep, going to the gym or for a walk, meditation/yoga, etc.
Another thing to keep in mind - our children use us as a model for how to take care of ourselves. Shouldn’t we be showing them what that means?
"Our children look to us and how we treat ourselves," says Bennett. "This goes for many things: how we speak to ourselves, how we treat our bodies, how we value our time. Modeling healthy self-care can be helpful for our children to witness and internalize. We are teaching them that taking care of yourself matters just as much as taking care of your family."
So, what are some things we can do care for ourselves?
Ideas Include:
-book YOUR appts for the year
-block out time on your phone/in your planner for 20 minutes of reading in morning
-go to bed 30 minutes earlier every night
-give yourself 5 minutes of meditation each day
-go for a walk in the morning or do your daily workout
-hydrate (set a goal of how many oz per day)
-make a healthy dinner a few times a week
This episode kicks off our monthly theme of self-care. We’ll be talking all about how to establish this in your daily life/schedule, create non-negotiables, regain guilt-free time, set boundaries, manifest the good stuff, love and care for your body (after having babies), vibrating higher as a mama, wife, and daughter of God.

"According to the Kaiser Family Foundation, kids ages 8-18 now spend, on average, a whopping 7.5 hours in front of a screen for entertainment each day, 4.5 of which are spent watching TV. Over a year, that adds up to 114 full days watching a screen for fun."
As we wrap up this month's focus on getting your kids outside…what if your kiddo doesn’t like the outdoors?
Kids aren’t playing the way they used to, so we need to bring back a deep love of the outdoors.
We have to take action to get our kids outside and playing in order to create a balance with technology. ALL kids need some unstructured, outdoor, free play! Being outside helps us retain necessary vitamin D, foster movement, and encourage exploration.
Bring the toys they love outside on a large blanket.
Enjoy the outdoors together – evening walk, washing the car, play kickball, have a fire and s’mores, catch fireflies, play hide-and-seek or tag, fishing, etc.
Offer them the chance to explore a variety of outdoor spaces – depending on where you live. Visit places like the botanical garden, the beach, kayaking a river, hiking in the woods, visiting a farm, going to the zoo, etc.
Make it social and bring their friends! Kids love to spend time with their friends, so why not let them enjoy each other outside? Encourage things like kickball, tag, obstacle course, scavenger hunt with a massive prize, etc.
It’s critical that kids contribute to caring for your home…there are tons of opportunities to do this outside. For example, our son fills the horses’ water trough every morning, helps water the garden and pick vegetables. Other examples might be sweeping the porch, taking out the garbage, or pulling weeds.
Kids love snacks! Take a picnic outside or have snacks handy to enjoy outside. If it’s hot, have popsicles, freeze pops, or ice cream on hand to enjoy.
Kids also love WATER! Offer water table, squirt guns, water balloons, slip n’ slides, etc.
Encourage daily “sunshine time” – even if it’s 20 minutes and chilly outside! Try to incorporate this time into your schedule each day…even on the weekends! If it’s raining, play on the porch!
Bring the books or art outside – read to stuffed animals or enjoy sidewalk chalk, squirt gun paint, etc.
Devote special time to the outdoors – if you live where it is hot…get out early in the morning or in the evening before bed. That’s what we do!
Tell them it is okay to get messy, muddy, and dirty!
Try your best to fill your child’s years as a kid with memories of fun and free play outside rather than memories of a screen. Some of my fondest memories ALL revolved around being outside.
Remember tired kids (from fresh air, grass on their feet and sunshine) are happy kids…I promise!

Wow! This episode is so important for mamas with kiddos struggling with sleeping!!! Eva Klein is a wealth of knowledge!
"Eva is a Certified Infant and Child Sleep Consultant and is the founder of My Sleeping Baby and the Sleep Bible program.
Eva’s main goal is to help her clients establish healthy sleep habits for their children. After experiencing the debilitating effects of chronic sleep deprivation from her middle child, Eva was inspired to help families overcome their sleep challenges. Eva truly empathizes with her clients’ sleep troubles and personally invests herself in their sleep journey.
In addition to completing her sleep consulting certification, she is a member of the Association of Professional Sleep Consultants and she completed the 2016 Infant Mental Health Community Training through the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. Eva also has her Bachelor of Arts from York University and her law degree from the University of Western Ontario.
Eva is a proud wife and mother of two girls and a boy (who are all great sleepers) and lives with her family in Toronto. She provides individual sleep consultations, facilitates group seminars and runs an online sleep program and community called the Sleep Bible."
Eva helps parents focus on several important steps to get their children sleeping naturally and fully through the night.
Top Three Tips for Parents:
1. Get Blackout Blinds: A child needs a dark room during the day because a darker environment makes it easier to nap well. Napping well during the day results in great sleep at night because your child will not be overtired. When a child is overtired, there is an increased probability of them waking up several times throughout the night.
2. Enjoyable/Consistent Routine: This routine will cue your little one that it is time to sleep and wind down for the day. It is hard for anyone to go from one activity right to sleeping. Children need a few minutes to prepare. A routine cues their brain that it is time to go to bed soon and eases them into that slow transition.
3. Set a Goal for Independent Sleep: Set a goal for your child to fall asleep independently. This will decrease the chance of more night-wakings and need to call out for you to help them get themselves back to sleep.
Eva will help you enjoy motherhood and be the mom you want to be! Remember, the days are long, but the years are short! With Eva's help, you'll feel refreshed and ready to conquer the day!

"Parenthood starts when you are ready to invest in something greater than yourself...your family."
Join me for this episode as I chat with Emily Pardy, Founder and Counselor, of Ready Nest Counseling in Nashville, Tennessee, as we talk about Ready Nest Counseling's incredible services for families, entrepreneurship, mental wellness, and embracing the beautiful mess of motherhood!
All milestones of motherhood are stressful for different reasons. Our culture today often promotes the fact that maternal instincts are natural, so we often have very high expectations for ourselves. Reality might not always match these expectations, and we are left feeling broken and while everyone else appears to have it together. This is extremely isolating.
When we do feel alone, we also often can't admit that we ARE struggling.
Emily shares that 20% of new moms struggle with post-partum depression. This percentage is likely higher as many who struggle with depression won't share that openly or in a study. The astonishing fact is that only 15% of that 20% will seek treatment! This is a huge gap!
As a reminder, if you are wondering if you ARE struggling with something more than general stress as a mama, Emily reminds us to let the counselors do the job of assessing and evaluating. Often, a mama is actually doing great and doesn't know it!
So, never have the fear to ask for and get the necessary help to connect the dots.
Emily also shares that when a couple is starting or continuing their family, it's important for them to look at their values, support system, reactions to current situations, and decisions when navigating through big events.
She reminds us that we should never let fear make the decision for us. We should empower ourselves, own the decision, and then get the tools to cope with any consequences.
When I ask her for tips and tricks to calm our mind to fully serve our family, she reminds us to look for pebbles not just mountains. Mountains are things like yoga classes, a peaceful walk, or that glass of wine. These DO make us happy, but sometimes, we can't always wait for that next yoga class to not have stress.
Sometimes, it more practical to collect "pebbles" or little moments along the way instead. For example, she shares her pebble moment after getting her four kids in the car. Her "eight second vacation" outside of the car includes high fives and deep breaths with her husband. It's sometimes the "little things" that keep us going!
She also reminds us to reach our goals and get the support we truly need.
"Whether you are contemplating parenthood, hoping to conceive, just found out you are expecting, suffered a loss, or already brought the baby home, Ready Nest Counseling can help you navigate the next phase of your relationship and emotional wellness."
Emily Pardy is the Founder of Ready Nest Counseling in Nashville, TN. She is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and one of the first in the country to be Certified in Perinatal Mental Health. Her own journey into motherhood led her to helping couples and individuals transition successfully through the life stages of conception, pregnancy, postpartum, infertility or loss.
A published author, Emily is also a member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, Postpartum Support International, and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine. She is a speaker and educator, dedicated to bridging the gap in prenatal and mental healthcare."

There is an urgency…not to make more money or to get that next deal...the urgency here is that our kids are growing up in front of us every single day.
It's the fact that our kids are only a newborn, toddler, 5 year old, middle schooler, and graduate once.
We won't ever get this time back again.
Many moms I talk to always feel busy, rarely enjoy being present with their families, and want to do more for their kids and their learning at home.
I understand…because I experience the same thing...every...day.
That's why I am also "slowing down" a bit over the summer to be more present, regroup, and refocus. I hope you can, too!
Over the summer, I'll still have my "Mama's Minute Thursday Podcast Episodes with some INCREDIBLE guests coming up! My "Teaching Tuesday" Episodes will return in the fall.
Our "Whole Mamas" FB group will continue to grow and thrive! Please join us! The Whole Mamas
My "Raising Whole Readers" and "Raising Whole Writers" courses will be up and running and helping tons of families prepare their kiddos for school in August/September. The writing course is coming soon https://wondrous-author-5392.ck.page/.../raising-whole...
Mamas can also utilize my 1:1 coaching calls as well! https://wondrous-author-5392.ck.page/.../thrive-in...
I'll be working on a "Mama's Retreat" Mastermind coming this fall. SO EXCITED!
Lastly, I'll enjoy this time with my boys, our farm, and take the very needed time to write my FIRST book!
So, right now...I encourage you to slow down this summer. Designate some time to get those important and necessary things done…and in return…the time with your kids will feel less stressful because your “to do’s” are already done or have a designated time TO GET DONE.

Does your child know how to hold a book, turn the pages, point to words and pictures, or point to the front cover, back cover, spine, and title page of a book?
“Concepts of print are a great predictor in a child's future success as a reader. Concepts of print influence a child's fluency and accuracy as a reader later in life.”
Concepts of print is the understanding that books contain letters, words, and pictures and that print has meaning. It also includes the understanding of how a book works and is really a child’s first interaction with literacy. Children need to understand the parts of a book, the concept of reading from left to right, differentiate between words and pictures, and between letters and words.
This understanding of how print works can easily be taught as you read together each day. While read a story, parents can point out letters, words, and other concepts of print just through the conversation about the story.
In terms of parts of a book, parents can easily start talking about the front cover, back cover, spine, title page, author/illustrator, and more. Parents can informally show children how to hold a book, how to read from left to right and top to bottom, how to turn a page, and more.
How You Can Teach at Home:
Read Aloud and point out the features of the book
Cut apart child’s name and ask them to put the letters back together to form his/her name
Help your child understand that print is everywhere!
Write together – thank you notes, birthday cards, grocery lists
Ask your child to draw a picture that tells a story and then dictate (write what your child says) the words that tell about the story and write on their page.
Model reading different kinds of text: books, newspapers, articles, magazines, mail, bills, e-mail, etc.
Letter, Word, Sentence Sorts
Pocket Chart
Nursery Rhymes

“Phonics instruction serves one purpose - to help readers figure out as quickly as possible the pronunciation of unknown words.”
A solid foundation in phonics will set children up for success in all areas of their education and will help them to easily decode unfamiliar words.
Phonics is the relationship between spoken sounds in a language and the letters or combination of letters that represents them.
Your child’s school likely teaches phonics systematically and sequentially. How can you help support their instruction at home?
1. Letter of the Week: If your child does not yet know all of his/her letter names/sounds, there are tons of fun ways to focus on each letter which might include songs, crafts, letter tubs, sorts, and more!
2. Sorts: Quick and easy and helps children distinguish the difference between sounds: short vs long vowel, digraphs, all short vowels, etc.
3. Magnetic Letters: Building words with magnetic words encourages exploration and manipulation of words. You can use on your fridge or buy a small cookie sheet at the dollar store to make this activity portable.
Daily phonics practice is a game-changer along with 20 minutes of reading for pleasure!

"And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience" (Romans 5:3).
Generally, the saying goes that God gives you opportunities to test your patience and boy does He do it with a toddler! Many cite the verse I just read. However, why don’t we instead reflect not on asking for patience itself, but rather, in how we ask for it.
Maybe if we are yelling at our kids a lot lately; acknowledging our yelling will help us direct our prayers more to how we can grow as Christians and mothers. So, instead of being more patient when our kids frustrate us, maybe instead we acknowledge that they WILL frustrate us, but maybe we will focus on how we respond - by yelling less.
So, in my opinion, we can always ask for help or guidance or grace or even patience. As seen here:
"If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent?"
If an earthly father will not answer his son cruelly when he asks for food, why should we expect our Father to be cruel when we honestly ask for help in some area? He will not upbraid of scold us when we ask for wisdom (James 1:5)
I am confident that He will not treat us meanly if we ask for patience. This transitions directly into raising toddlers doesn't it?!
As our children grow into 2 and 3 year old kiddos, they are learning right and wrong, cause and effect, how to express feelings, and more. It is amazing to see them grow, but it is also quite challenging at times.
3 Ways to Survive the “Terrible Twos” and “Trying Threes”
Give two choices that still result in what YOU want them to do, but you are giving them the freedom and independence to start make their own choices .
Stay firm with choices, decisions, and consequences.
Sit on the floor at their level when discussing or providing a consequence. Reasoning with a toddler can be hard, but we can still explain why we made that decision, what would happen if we didn’t intervene, or “if this…the that” scenarios.
And also…breathe…remember this isn’t forever…remember to enjoy even these challenging times…and always have WINE on hand!
"Spend some time being still before the Lord, waiting patiently to hear from Him. Pray that He would keep you from fretting over evil people who seem to prosper, over the ones who carry out evil devices. Ask that the Lord would help you to refrain from anger, and forsake wrath, choosing not to worry since it accomplishes nothing of benefit. Claim God’s promise that evildoers shall be cut off, but those who wait for the Lord shall inherit the land."
(Psalm 37:7-9).

“There is massive evidence that self-selected reading, or reading what you want to read, is responsible for most of our literacy development. Readers have better reading ability, know more vocabulary, write better, spell better, and have better control of complex grammatical constructions. In fact, it is impossible to develop high levels of literacy without being a dedicated reader, and dedicated readers rarely have serious problems in reading and writing.”

Been a year of growth, change, and putting myself out there. What about for you? It reminds me of when we decided to purchase our farm. It was exciting and terrifying at the same time.
But, we did it, and this farm life has opened so many doors for us. If we hadn’t tried this, I would have always regretted it.
"We must all suffer from one of two pains: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. The difference is discipline weights ounces while regret weighs tons." -Jim Rohn
I know it is life, and we all experience regret, but I have made a promise to myself that if anything, I worked my hardest to achieve the impossible. To never regret having never tried. I hope you do the same.
Is it scary? Sure.
Will it be messy? Yep.
I want to encourage every single mom out there to really look at their lives and reflect. If you are in the right place doing the right things for your SOUL…keep going mama.

One 2019 study estimated that "children who are regularly read to in the 5 years leading up to kindergarten are exposed to 1.4 million more words than children who aren’t read to during those years."
Wow!
Let’s talk the benefits of babies, toddlers, and books!!!
Reading to our children at an early age helps to develop the roots of language as their brain develops. It builds listening and communication skills, introduces important vocabulary, develops rhyming skills, fosters bonding between parents and their children, and contributes to cognitive and language development.
Reading to children at this age helps with their attention span, creativity, and helps to teach life lessons and build character.

Are you struggling to find that minute to yourself? Are your littles constantly tugging or crawling on you? Or your high schooler has you up at night worrying? Do you just need a minute to yourself?
This evening, it was crazy in the house with our boys. I could feel myself getting really anxious. I stepped outside on this incredible evening…it was cool…the sun was setting…and I walked over to water the newly planted herb, tomato, pepper, and berry plants.
I’m not sure if it was the cool air, the mist of the water, or watching our pup peacefully stare at the sunset. Or maybe it was the smell of fresh laid soil, greenery surrounding our home, or the peaceful swaying of our new little plants. But, for a brief moment, I was completely relaxed.
Just as with animals, gardens have a way of pulling us into a tranquil place, and as busy mamas these days, maybe a little garden is just what we need.
I am here to give you some motivation and quick and easy tips to get started ASAP!
Grow herbs or microgreens on the windowsill in your kitchen.
Enjoy small succulent gardens in your kitchen/on your desk and air plants in your bathroom.
If planting outside – start small and do this: choose what you want to plant, pick a spot with appropriate sunlight for your specific plants, test and prep your soil or purchase really good organic soil (for raised beds or pots), plant (and fertilize if needed), and water and tend to often.
Best advice I ever got that changed the way I approached gardening…nurture and care for your garden as you would do for your children. Make sure it has the best nutrients, it is tended to and loved daily, and in return, your garden will thrive and provide.
Try potted plants on your porch or deck. They are easy, right near your door, and offer the same benefits as large gardens.
Benefits for Mama: daily physical activity, daily exposure to sunlight and vitamin D, fresh air regularly, weight loss, organic and flavorful produce, stress relief and more!!!
For me, gardening/watering the garden/picking herbs and berries offers a moment just for me. To walk peacefully among the plants…to take a few big deep breaths…to refocus…to settle in for the night. Even if you start small…I encourage you to start a garden for your kids and for YOU!
“The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just on the body, but the soul.” Alfred Austin

Do animals really help us and our children? How can animals help us teach our children basic learning skills, life skills, and even how to help build their character? How do animals impact our children’s lives?
"Most notably, animal-assisted intervention research has provided evidence of positive outcomes for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), conduct disorder, and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, as well as for children in medical settings [for reviews, see Nimer & Lundahl, 2007; O'Haire, 2013]. Meta-analyses of animal-assisted intervention research show a range of benefits, including increased social interaction and communication, as well as reduced stress (cortisol response), severity of ASD symptoms, and aggressive behavior" [Nimer & Lundahl, 2007; O'Haire, 2013].
When children interact with animals, they develop an understanding of responsibility, connection, and empathy.
Animals teach us a lot about ourselves…our emotions…our worries…
Animals are excellent listeners, friends, and teachers. They sure teach us a lot about life.
Animals can also help us when teaching our children skills in reading, writing, math, and science.
To me…raising children with animals helps children to:
-spend more time outside
-develop empathy and compassion
-learn about love and loss
-foster responsibility and leadership skills
-teach kids about sharing, patience, self-control, and unconditional love
You surely don’t have to have animals, chickens or other farm animals like we do…but you can incorporate animals into your home in a way that best suites your family…and I sure hope you do!

Are your kids down to just 20 minutes or so of recess at school each day? Do they come home and immediately run to that video game or tablet? How often are they actually outside per week?
Technology has drawn us more and more inside in front of a screen rather than outside in the fresh air. I think we have forgotten all of the amazing benefits that the natural world can provide to our mental, physical, and intellectual well-being.
As research continues to show the benefits of outdoor learning, educators and administrators must really look at what the data is saying about learning outside.
Outdoor learning offers a space of discovery, exploration, problem-solving, and more. It specifically offers:
Health Benefits
Real-World Connections
Improvement in Mental Health
Concentration and Engagement
What can you do?
Plan and manage a small garden together
Encourage kids to draw/write/reflect about experience outside
Use outdoor time as a time to talk and teach
Build vocabulary about what you see outside
Attach experiences to texts

Can we all agree that motherhood is tough? Amazing? Drives you crazy? Makes you worry all the time? Pulls you in 15 million directions? Makes you have to remember everything so you don’t miss ANYTHING?
Let me tell you…in this regard…motherhood reminds me a whole lot of owning a farm. I will explain why today AND start this new month in the farm mode.
Let's chat about what drew us to live on a farm with our kids, why to me it’s a symbol of motherhood, AND how we can acknowledge that motherhood is tough.
As a mother and farm owner, I am raising the next generation and teaching them lessons about life through our experiences on the farm. While reflecting on this amazing life, I also found many similarities between motherhood and farm living. We are constantly feeding, worry about well-being, raising other beings from birth, providing a safe and comfortable space, and experiencing love and loss.
With children on the farm, I feel that they get a glimpse into what motherhood (fatherhood) or just parenting is really like - things like responsibility, obligation, duty, finances, safety, birth, loss…all of it. We are pulled in a million directions with a never-ending list of things to do. Sounds like motherhood doesn’t it?
Our job as mothers ISN’T easy. From infertility to miscarriages to hard pregnancies…to breastfeeding…to working…to staying home…to the terrible twos and trying threes…to helping our kids read…to attitudes in middle school…to always worrying in high school…to letting go in college and when they get married…motherhood is tough.
"Motherhood has to be for the faint of heart. Motherhood is mission: Jesus calls and equips women to discipleship—following him as he brings about the spreading of the glory of God in every corner of the earth. In his Great Commission, Jesus called you and every disciple to go and send, even if the farthest you go is to the nursery and back. You are on mission, and your labors are unto the Lord."
https://www.crossway.org/articles/motherhood-is-for-the-faint-of-heart/
I recently read a blog post by https://herviewfromhome.com/when-god-made-a-mother/ and it was SO powerful…that I had to share.
"And as God looked down at the babies, each one so fearfully and wonderfully made, He knew they needed a teacher. Someone to sit them on their laps, to read them His stories and teach them His truth. To sing them His songs and whisper His love for them. Yes, God-fearing women.
Women who would change the world by the shaping of tiny souls, while at the same time letting her calling shape her own soul. He knew there would be no one else like her. No one more pure, no destiny more fulfilling. No one the babies needed more.
That’s when God made a mother."
Get ready, Mama, because this is a NEW month with lots of goodness ahead for you and your family. Whether your kids are 2, 10, 20, 32, or 40!!!
Our job as a mama is real...needed...and essential. Even on the bad days. We keep going...we keep loving...we keep serving. Let's go!

Do you know how many adults are illiterate in our country? What percent of children are proficient in reading? Why Kindergarten is so important?
"More than 37 percent of fourth-graders are not reading at the basic level in their grade, and 26 percent of eighth-graders are not reading at their basic level. "
"The Family Literacy Centers also predicts that if a child is not proficiently reading by the fourth grade, he or she will have a 78 percent chance of not catching up with classmates."
Even more astounding data in the link below.
https://resilienteducator.com/.../statistics-concerning.../
" Some 36 million adults in the U.S. don’t have basic reading, writing, and math skills above a third-grade level, according to ProLiteracy."
"Illiteracy is a major factor in whether adolescents graduate from high school. One in 6 high school students — or about 1.2 million teens — drop out each year, according to ProLiteracy."
"Students who are behind when they start kindergarten make up the largest portion of school dropouts. These students have a less than 12% chance of attending college, according to the Children’s Reading Foundation."

3 Simples Ways to Get Started:
Read/Write Daily – provide the experience with reading EVERY DAY.
Be Consistent – working on phonics, fluency, or writing - stay consistent…show up for your kids and expect them to as well.
Set Mindset – when you child says…I can’t read...guide them to a different mindset…I am learning to read. I am learning to write.
This has been on my heart for a long time after working in education. I have prayed and brainstormed ways to help families (especially in literacy) so that they have a solid reading foundation going into school.
I have pulled together all of the great things we did with our students to get them reading and writing proficiently as quickly as possible into two workshops to help parents PROACTIVELY prepare their children for school instead of REACTING to the problems they face in the classroom.
I will be offering TWO workshops:
Whole Readers Workshop (PreK - 1st)
Whole Writers Workshop (PreK -1st)
All by just spending 20 MINUTES a day with them!!!
These workshops will be fun and not time consuming because...mom life is BUSY!
They will be informative, fun, supportive, AND you will leave with a simple and effective game plan for your child's learning.
Stay tuned for more info and LET's GO!!!! Our children need us.

What are phonemes? What is phonemic awareness? Is it important? What is phonics? 1How can I help my child read these words? Is my child behind in reading? How do I know?
"Help me, Jenna!"
"Research has identified phonemic awareness and letter knowledge as the best two predictors of how well a child will learn to read during the first two years of school (National Reading Panel, 2000). Children who develop strong phonemic awareness skills at an early age are more likely to become fluent readers and better spellers than children who do not."
Phonological Awareness: The ability to "recognize and manipulate the spoken parts of sentences and words...Phonological awareness is especially important at the earliest stages of reading development — in pre-school, kindergarten, and first grade for typical readers...Phonological awareness refers to a global awareness of sounds in spoken words, as well as the ability to manipulate those sounds." Examples include rhyming, alliteration, sentence segmenting, syllable blending, and segmenting.
Phonemic Awareness: The ability to "notice, think about, and work with the individual sounds (phonemes) in spoken words. This includes blending sounds into words, segmenting words into sounds, and deleting and playing with the sounds in spoken words."
Phonics: The ability to apply the knowledge of letter sounds to decoding unfamiliar printed words.
Phonological awareness refers to oral language and phonics refers to written print.

When you think about your child’s learning this year…what do you think of? How do you feel?
I would bet some of those feelings might include frustration with technology and schedules... guilt for being torn between work and helping with Zoom or school assignments…and overwhelm as to knowing how to help your kids with their learning and how to help them succeed as you move into the end of this school year.
But, I bet you haven’t just been disappointed and frustrated with your child’s education since Covid-19 came upon us almost a year ago. I can almost bet your frustration stems from some other issues that make you feel uneasy about education today. Issues like excessive testing, insane standards, reduced recess time, and far less opportunities for free reading than before.
"***The results demonstrate what reading experts say they already knew about U.S. students' reading abilities: Most students leave the primary grades as competent readers steeped in the basics, but many fail to refine and build on their skills as they move through middle and high school."
http://www.adlit.org/article/328/
ACCORDING TO THE US DEPT. OF EDUCATION: "45 million are functionally illiterate and read below a 5th grade level. 50% of adults cannot read a book written at an eighth grade level."*** https://www.successreading.com/pages/according-us-dept-education
“Unfortunately, the older a child is, the more difficult it is to teach him or her to read. If a child can't read well by the end of third grade, odds are that he or she will never catch up. And the effects of falling behind and feeling like a failure can be devastating.”
https://www.readingrockets.org/helping
Do we dare ask ourselves, is this the time to make necessary changes to our education system? What do we do now to help our children still succeed? What a time in history that gives the power to the parents to really see what their children are learning and not learning.
"We can best help children learn, not be deciding what we think they should learn and thinking of ingenious ways to teach it to them, but by making the world, as far as we can, accessible to them, paying serious attention to what they do, answering their questions – if they have any – and helping them explore the things they are most interested in. – John Holt
This month, I am so thrilled to be offering options for mamas to find a place of encouragement, education, motivation, support, and empowerment to find wholeness in themselves and the tools and resources to starting setting a solid foundation for their children TODAY. If you are ready to join me on this journey, this month is where it begins!

Many of us work towards looking and feeling our best.
Losing those extra inches...or fitting into that little dress...or lifting that next weight.
What really motivates you to care for your body? As a Christian, do you look at your body as a gift that you must nurture and care for? Do you perceive your body as a way to glorify God for your life that was purchased for a price?
"Our bodies are sacred temples for God’s Spirit."
“Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit lives in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him; for God’s temple is sacred, and you are that temple.” (1 Corinthians 3:16-17)
"Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." (1 Corinthians 10:31)
"For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church." (Ephesians 5:29)
Just as we need the energy to be good mothers, we must also have that energy to spread God’s love and word. "If we are called by God to spread the Gospel and be His children here on Earth, shouldn’t we honor Him by being that healthy, living vessel that he needs?"
Three Ways To Do This:
SPIRITUAL HEALTH
PHYSICAL HEALTH
MENTAL HEALTH
May we not forget that the Bible says taking care of our body is so important because we can receive what God wants to do for our hearts.

Are you worried about how to fit all of the pieces together to raise a wholesome and happy child? Are you stressed because you have zero time to spend teaching your kids healthy habits that they will carry into adulthood?
First, Mama, surround yourself, your spouse, and your children within a space that inspires you, motivates you, and comforts you. Spend time with parents and children that push you up instead of pull you down. Some of the habits I will mentioned today will very likely be taught indirectly just by spending time with the right people in your life. Remember…it takes a village to raise our children!
Our mind and body are strongly connected – so keeping our kids on track with both of those can really keep them be balanced, healthy, and happy. Today I am going to touch on 12 important habits to focus on AND quick ways to incorporate them into your daily life. You DON’T have to teach a HUGE lesson that will take hours and hours. You only need a few things to keep in mind and have on hand to start touching on these TODAY!
Enjoy Fun and Nutritious Food
Stay Active and Move
Instill Responsibility Early
Teach Good Sleep Habits
Model Personal Hygiene
Keep Surrounding Space Clean
Identify and Celebrate Real Emotions
Have Gratitude and Good Character
Embrace Boredom
Teach Life Skills
Model Money Habits
Appropriate Social Skills and Manners
So, how do we do this AND get everything else done? Try these THREE quick and easy methods to simply teach these habits right in your own home:
#1 FIND QUICK TEACHABLE MOMENTS
Identify
Empower
Teach
#2 THE POWER OF BOOKS AND VIDEOS
Don’t put that pressure all on YOU! There are tons of resources out there to help whether it’s in an actual book or online.
#3 USE PICTURES, ITEMS, AND EXPERIENCES
Many children are visual and hands-on and are still learning vocabulary and benefit tremendously from manipulatives. Whether you teach with pretend food, actual coins, a pretend checkbook, puppets, role-playing, etc. Even if for just 10 minutes a day, week, or a month. The point is…YOU ARE DOING IT. You are making time for what’s important...and that's what matters!
These pieces fit together to help raise the “whole child.” Not just academically…not just physically…but all of it. The whole child…the whole little person! It is hard…it takes time…but in the end…it is 100% worth the investment in your children.
"You don’t have to make your children into wonderful people, you just have to remind them that they are wonderful people. " -William Martin

This month is all about how we, mamas, can fuel our body with nutrient-rich food, hydrate daily, exercise, and find mental and spiritual peace.
Whether you have a newborn, 5 year old, or an 18 year old…we give ourselves fully to provide for our children…often at the cost of putting our own well-being aside.
The thing is…at some point…we will reach our peak of exhaustion, get sick, snap at our kids, and age faster due to poor nutrition…lack of water…lack of exercise…stress…and poor sleep.
We have to take care of ourselves...and it starts TODAY!

At such a time as this…what are you reading? Instagram posts? Tik Tok posts? Facebook? Or something else…a great motivational read? Mystery? Devotional? Biography? What are you reading that is serving you in a positive way? Teaching you something? Taking you away from this chaos and into a make-believe place? Pushing you to be your best self?
This is Mama’s Minute…and today we are have a brief chat about what mamas are reading in 2021.
Just as we talked all about encouraging our children to read on Tuesday’s episode…we also need to think about what we are feeding our brain and heart!
I asked mamas in our new Facebook Group, The Whole Mamas, to share the titles of books they are reading right now…and oh my…did they provide!! Suggestions ranged from everything from The Librarian of Auschwitz to Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey to Oh Crap! Potty Training: Everything Modern Parents Need to Know to Do It Once and Do It Right by Jamie Glowacki to Untamed by Glennon Doyle…to the Bible.
Even if you read a page a day, you are doing it! Think of how many books you can read this year and stick to it! Think of how many people you will meet, places you will visit, and stories you will experience…just by picking up a book!
In fact, start a new one this weekend! Grab a new book, a mug of something delicious, and give yourself even five minutes to get reading! Feel free to message me what you started and don’t forget to join our FB group…The Whole Mamas!

More than likely…you have felt frustrated and overwhelmed about your child’s education well before the pandemic and distance-learning. Why? Find out by listening to this episode!
It is time for us (Mamas) to bring that joy of reading back to our kids.
It is time to devote time, space, and support to this very critical piece of learning.

This episode is probably the most open and honest one I have recorded. Through the chaos of these past few days, I have had to personally step away and refocus, be still, and find joy in my own little world. I had to focus on me, so that I could be 100% there for my kids. How did I do that? I focused on my faith, my family, and delicious food!
Whatever you have been making at home (or ordered out on those crazy days), it has brought your family together. These recipes might have been the one thing you looked forward to on a bad day. Maybe you aren’t a great cook, but decided to try out a few things. They brought you and your family to gather in the kitchen. They encouraged you to try a new spice or herb. They initiated storytelling and brought people together.
These recipes have in many ways become dear friends. On the days when we felt the most along…most fearful…most hopeless. They brought a sense of comfort that you were able to share with your spouse and kids. I want to hear about these. They are worth sharing with me and with our country and the world right now. I am working on a project that I can hardly wait to start! Over the next month, we will be creating a virtual cookbook together of our favorite recipes that we’ve been cooking during his pandemic, political crisis, and uncertainty in our lives.
I hope this collective cookbook will spark some joy and community in our lives during a time when we need it most. I hope that this episode might serve as a reminder that you are not alone…whatever your beliefs about all of this are…you are not alone. Your heavy heart will heal. It might take time, but in the meantime, be still and focus on faith, family, and food.
