How can you ensure a smooth “exchange” when passing the baton of business ownership to the next generation?Hopefully, this podcast episode can help.Today, Russ Clemmer sits down with his father-in-law David Harper, Founder and CEO of Legacy Advisory Partners, to discuss the ins and outs of passing the business on to the next generation.Listen in as David explains how to hand over the reins of ownership in a timely and suitable way, and how the next generation can take over the role as smoothly as possible—incorporating their own values and personal leadership style, all while respecting the company culture and structure they are inheriting.Russ also offers his thoughts on the unique relationship between two generations of leaders in a family business and how to minimize the potential friction that inevitably crops up every now and again in such a relationship. Finally, David talks about the importance of virtues, such as acceptance, integrity, peacemaking, and communication, to ensure continued success and long-term growth following the passing of the torch from one generation to the next.Don't miss this episode if you’re a founder who cares about setting up your company for success with your next-generation leadership!Key Takeaways:—(01:45) Passing the baton to the next generation is, more often than not, done poorly. —(06:56) One of the main traits that determine the suitability of a company’s successor is how well other people in the organization recognize their leadership capability.—(11:42) There should be equality between how Gen 1 and Gen 2 express themselves as company leaders. —(18:17) In case of a crisis in which the previous generation cannot go through the gradual ownership transition (due to the owner’s death, for example), there are three factors to consider.—(21:42) Long-term success following a transition of ownership relies on four elements.Connect with the Guest:David Harper, founder and CEO of Legacy Advisory Partners: David on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jdharperjr/ Connect with the Host:Russ Clemmer, president of Legacy Advisory PartnersRuss Clemmer on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/russclemmer/The 3 Wins Podcast is presented by Legacy Advisory Partners: https://www.legacyadvisorypartners.com/Connect with the Producer:Sean Lyden, CEO, Lyden CommunicationsSean Lyden on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/seanlyden/ The 3 Wins is produced by Lyden Communications LLC: https://strategyandstorytelling.com/ To learn more about how to apply The 3 Wins Framework in your business, download our FREE whitepaper, “The 3 Wins: How to Unleash the Collaboration Effect on Profits in Your Company” here: https://www.legacyadvisorypartners.com/signup-for-free-book-download.htmlThe Great 8: A New Paradigm for Leadership, by J. In Episode 32 of The 3 Wins Podcast, we sit down with Larry Cox, managing partner at CoxNichols, LLC, a consulting company that supports families in finding joy in fulfilling their altruistic goals. Larry works with philanthropists on strategic planning, developing systems and processes, and generational succession.
Don't miss this episode if you’re a business leader who cares about building an enduring, multi-generational legacy!
Episode Highlights
Focus on values vs. valuables. (03:26) When discussing leaving a legacy, many families focus on their valuables rather than their values. It’s important to discuss your family values so that the legacy you leave comes from your heart rather than your monetary wealth.
View your business as a mission field. (17:06) We don’t typically think of business owners when we hear the word “missionary”. But there is so much value in teaching the skills of entrepreneurship, investing, and money management skills to people of all stripes—and helping them grow in their faith as business owners.
Shift your thinking from “giving” to “sharing.” (20:17) Try using the word “share” rather than “give”. Even if it’s merely psychological, “giving” can make us feel a lack of true engagement or even fulfillment for the act; whereas “sharing” something implies a mutual element. Sharing connects our head, our heart, and our hands to those we touch.
Live your legacy NOW. (24:41) It’s never too early to think about the impact you want to make on this earth. Legacy is not about what comes after you die. You need to live your legacy now.
Embrace stewardship. (32:18) Stewardship means “to take care of something that does not belong to you.” We are stewards of God’s resources. We need to teach our children to appreciate and practice generosity, particularly through the lens of stewardship.

“My whole life shifted from thinking all about ‘Dean’ to all about, ‘How can I serve others? And how can God use me to serve others?’” Dean said.
He also deep dives into the idea of finding and following your calling. As Dean puts it: “If you don’t follow your calling, the world is missing out on your contribution because no one has the exact same calling as you.”
Don't miss this episode if you’re a business leader who cares deeply about doing more than just making money!
Episode Highlights Here are a few highlights from Episode 31 with Dean Niewolny:
(03:54) Dean reminds us that one of the most important things we need to track is how much impact we make as a company. He has found that the best way to do this is by keeping a “Book of Days” where—similar to a journal—you write about the challenges you’ve overcome, the growth you’ve experienced, and the goals you’ve set for yourself.
(16:31) “Halftime” does not necessarily equate to “mid-life.” Instead, it means “season of life.”
(22:12) The “journey of the head” is about superficial rewards—money, reputation, power, etc. But the “journey of the heart” is a calling to serve others. There is nothing more satisfying than making an impact in someone’s life—and age is irrelevant when it comes to making that impact.
(30:00) Your identity is in Christ, not your title or job.
(48:24) If you’re currently at the starting line of your career, shadow someone who has reached your goal.

What was the “Burning Bush” moment in your life?
In Episode 28 of #The3WinsPodcast, Russ Clemmer sits down with Bill High who shares his story.
The “Burning Bush” refers to a Biblical story in the Book of Exodus that goes something like this. Flames grab Moses' attention. And when Moses turns toward the bush consumed by fire, he hears a voice. At that moment, God tells Moses to step out of his comfort zone and confront the Egyptian Pharoah. The mission: Tell the Pharaoh, “Let my people go.”
Bill’s "Burning Bush" moment in 2000 changed the trajectory of his life in a radical way. He felt God's call to leave the income and security of his job as an attorney. The mission: Step out on faith to start a new charitable foundation.
That new venture became The Signatry.
It has been more than two decades since Bill answered the call. Today, The Signatry has facilitated sending over $3.5 billion to world-changing causes.
You don’t want to miss this episode! Bill talks about…
✅ What a “Burning Bush” moment looks like in everyday life.
✅ His backstory—how the hardships he encountered after his dad died shaped his life.
✅ His faith journey.
✅ Why Bill left practicing law to start The Signatry in 2000.
✅ How God is “pleased by risk.”
✅ Donor-advised funds. What are they? How do they work? Why use them for high-impact charitable giving?
✅ Why are stories crucial to ensuring a smooth ownership transition of your company?
✅ His perspective on Legacy: “Legacy is not what you leave behind. Legacy is what you put in motion.”

We talk about…

✅ How developing high-level collaboration among your leadership team is an often overlooked—and underdeveloped—competitive advantage.

On Episode 23 of #The3WinsPodcast, Russ is joined by fellow Legacy leadership team members, Marc Walker (Chief Investment Officer) and Matt Joines (Certified Financial Planner).
Long-term incentive plans (LTIPs)—also known as non-qualified deferred compensation (NQDC) plans or 409A plans—can be a powerful financial tool to attract, incentivize and retain your key leaders.
That’s because the IRS imposes strict limits on how much an employee can contribute to a 401(k). But non-qualified plans, like LTIPs, don’t have those federally mandated limits.
That means your highly compensated employees (HCEs)—a.k.a. your key leaders—can max out contributions to their 401(k) and then continue to build their retirement savings through an NQDC plan.
And as the employer, these plans offer you a lot of flexibility in how you design them.
But with more flexibility comes greater complexity.
So, what should you consider when designing and benchmarking your company’s long-term incentive plans?
In this episode, Russ, Marc, and Matt deep-dive into the world of LTIPs to help you think through the important factors that impact plan performance—in terms of retaining key leaders and helping you, as the owner, to achieve your own retirement goals.
They talk about…
✅Using long-term incentive plans to build an “owner mentality” within your key leadership team.
✅ Knowing precisely what you want your business to produce—and how that impacts your decisions around LTIP design and benchmarking.
✅ Deploying smart budgeting, forecasting, and cash management strategies to create excess profits to fund your company’s long-term incentive plan.
✅ Deciding how you want to reward your key leaders—in a way that is also a win for you and the company.
✅ Investing more money into retention is not necessarily better; it’s more important to have a plan and be intentional about the performance metrics you want to incentivize.

✅ What it means to run your business on Biblical principles.
✅ How the little things you share can make a big impact on your team.
✅ Hiring chaplains to serve your team.
✅ How Biblical principles, like “loving your neighbor,” can be instrumental to creating “raving fans” - loyal customers who want to keep doing business with you and tell others about you.

The Value of Leading Your Business for Christ with Bobby Mitchell Sr.
Do you have a vision of leading your business for Christ? Even in today’s very capitalized world, a Christian can start and manage a business according to Biblical principles.
In this episode of the 3 Wins Podcast, Russ Clemmer speaks with Bobby Mitchell Sr., the Founder and Chairman of the Board, Fellowship of Companies for Christ International (FCCI), and CEO at Applied Ceramics Inc.
They talk about how to lead a business for Christ with the Salvation, Sanctification, and Service concept and its benefits for Christian business owners.
What You Will Learn: How to manage a business for Christ. Bobby explains why FCCI decided to operate their businesses as a platform for ministry.
Salvation, sanctification, and service. How Bobby started building his business for Christ by offering people salvation first followed by the sanctification of their faith and later focused on service to fellow men.
Bobby narrates how business owners connected and came together through the FCCI to lead their businesses for Christ and offer support to each other.
The philosophy of God owns it all – understanding God’s purpose for giving you your business.
How to understand your role as a steward of what God has given you and using it for His glory.
Why it’s easier to find support to help you stay accountable when it comes to giving than not having support at all.
Why generosity and the joy of giving are two different concepts for individual Christians.

A donor-advised fund (DAF) allows donors to offload much of the administrative responsibilities of their charitable giving to a third party while retaining significant control over where the money is invested and given.
In this episode, Terry Parker with the National Christian Foundation offers a deep dive into the world of DAFs and how they equip you with a powerful vehicle to supercharge the impact of your giving.
Here are seven key takeaways from our conversation.
✅ Giving strategically is both cost-effective and more advantageous to the donor.
✅ Foundations, like NCF, are not a means to exploit the system. Instead, they exist to allow the donor to work smarter with their money while providing greater transparency and accountability.
✅ Critics of certain causes might target and harass donors who contribute to organizations they disapprove of. But when you give through organizations like NCF, you gain a certain level of protection. That’s because the donation moves through the foundation and then to the charity, where the identity of the individual donor is not made public.
✅ DAFs can help reduce taxes to maximize the giver’s donation.
✅ NCF helps donors avoid mistakes where their money gets wasted and makes little, if any, impact. NCF refuses to support causes that do not meet a particular transparency requirement. This way, the foundation can ensure that donors give to a reputable cause to protect their money - and reputation.
✅ NCF can also help private foundations maximize the impact of their annual giving requirements. That’s because giving money to NCF meets the yearly requirement while allowing the foundation to strategically donate to a cause without making a hasty and haphazard decision, which can potentially turn into wasted money for a dishonest cause.
✅ Making consistent contributions over time promotes the joy of giving compared to a one-time, large sum contribution.

Legacy’s Russ Clemmer recently sat down with Kris Maynard, co-founder and CEO at Essential Ingredients Inc., a chemical distribution company with more than 80 employees and facilities around the U.S. and Canada.
We talked about what it takes to cultivate the kind of purpose-driven company that inspires loyalty, generosity, and fun – and generates healthy profits, too.
This episode offers a wealth of business advice with a hopeful message about the many ways in which companies can do good AND still do well.
Key takeaways from our conversation…
✅ Putting an Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP) in place was not only a solution to the question of succession for Essential Ingredients but also a turning point for the company’s overall culture and mission.

Ep. 16—Building an Investment-Grade Company
On this episode of The 3 Wins Podcast, our guest is Zane Tarence, Managing Director and Partner of Founders Advisors. Our host, Russ Clemmer, president of Legacy Advisory Partners, has a conversation with Zane about what makes a company “investment-grade” and how to get there.
Zane has over 30 years of experience working in business, including having started his own technology business as well as having experience heading up a VC model incubator that invested in small companies. In his current role at Founders Advisors, he works on helping business founders figure out what their best path is for their company and how to grow and raise capital. He has also written a book, 17 Reasons Your Company is NOT Investment Grade & What to Do About It, which uses the knowledge he’s gained through working with, owning, and investing in businesses throughout the years, to help business owners learn how to make their firms investment-grade.
Zane explains that the 17 points that he addresses in his book are not just a list of independent things that a company must do, but rather, they are 17 interconnected components of the business that all impress upon each other and impact each other (a holistic system).
He shares some questions that he believes companies should be asking themselves when checking to see if they are investment-grade, including: How does your barrier to entry relate to your brand? Are your best and most talented people in the company working on the things that will give you a competitive advantage?
Key Takeaways: -- Having predictable, reoccurring revenue that can be counted on is one of the most important ways to be seen as a viable investment.
-- The Talent Management piece, having top talent on your teams and the right people in leadership positions at your firm, is the #1 most important thing to being seen as investment-grade.
-- You need to have something original and unique about your business in order to have barriers to entry that keep other people from being able to easily compete with you and take over your market.

On this episode of The 3 Wins Podcast, our guest is Phil Brown, the former head of HR at Mohawk Industries. We talk with Phil about some of the positive and challenging aspects of virtual work.
Key Takeaways: 1. A shift in the paradigm of corporate culture toward virtual work must center on how to get the work done. Everyone will have preferences, but employee experience is second to getting the job done.
Understanding organizational culture means balancing the needs of all three stakeholders in your business: your customers, your owners, and your employees.
Virtual technology can enable your organizational strategy, but you have to manage for it. The vision is not about working remotely—it’s about seeing how the business is evolving toward the future and how you can use technology to help your teams accomplish their goals.

On this episode of The 3 Wins Podcast, our guest is Jim Robinson, the president of Robinson Compensation. Our host, Russ Clemmer, president of Legacy Advisory Partners, has a conversation with Jim about how virtual work is changing the way we think about work.
Jim has more than 40 years working in corporate compensation and benefits, and he shares how the pandemic has forced company leaders and stakeholders to rethink how they approach providing compensation and benefits to their employees. He explains that in the area of compensation, some companies are thinking about getting rid of geographic disparities since employees can now work from across the country.
Key Takeaways: Because employers are key stakeholders, their comfort and ability to complete work is integral to the health of the company.
There is no going back to experimental: people have experienced remote work and they’re going to want to see more of that.
Understanding how to pay employees who live in different parts of the country will emerge as a new challenge.
Additional Points: Ideas around how to compensate employees are changing in the pre-pandemic era.
Broader work may impact millennial turnover
Geographic differentials will certainly change because of remote work culture.
Incentive compensation is difficult because performance is hard to manage with remote employees.
Millennials have led the charge to change performance management. Attitudes surrounding severance have long-lasting effects on companies.
Organizations have a vested interest in fostering the respect of their employees.

We’ve designed The 3 Wins Podcast for CEOs, CFOs, and, really, any executive who oversees employee benefits - to talk about smart strategies, new ideas and current events that impact how your company attains and retains your top talent.
In the last episode, Russ, Marc and Matt talked about how to roll out a deferred compensation plan in a way that offers a positive experience for your participating executives.
(Watch Episode 12: https://youtu.be/z8vN25wO1gE)
The question today is how do you fund a deferred compensation plan? And what are some strategies to consider to help put your plan in the best position to ultimately pay for itself?
We deep dive into these questions and more on today’s episode of The 3 Wins Podcast.

In the last episode, Russ, Marc and Matt talked about how to align your deferred compensation executive benefits plan with the company’s objectives - to create an opportunity where both the employee and the company come out as winners.
(Watch Episode 11: https://youtu.be/fDzyhQDVE-o)
But the challenge is this: You can offer the best, most generous deferred compensation plan in the world, but if your top executives don’t know about the plan or aren’t taking full advantage of it, you’re squandering a valuable tool to attain and retain those key leaders.
So, how do you build awareness among your senior leadership team about the financial advantages that come with this benefit to enhance their tax strategy and retirement planning?
And when they’re ready to participate, how do you make the onboarding process as easy and frictionless as possible?
And how do you ensure that the plan offers a positive experience for your executives - in a way that reflects well on your company?
We deep dive into these questions and more on today’s episode of The 3 Wins Podcast.

Today, we address the question: “What if we already have a plan in place but it’s not working for us? What do we do?”
This issue gets to the heart of what we call “Plan Rehab.”
The idea here is thinking through: What needs to be done with the plan to get it back on track?
Do people understand the purpose of the plan?
Is there continuity from the leadership team and between the participants around what the plan there for?
What are you trying to accomplish with the plan in place?
Or is it just there as a part of the benefits package and nobody really understands it?
We’ll help you determine whether your deferred compensation plan needs rehab and, if so, what to do about it on today’s episode of The 3 Wins Podcast.

Simon Sinek put it best in “Start with Why: How Great Leaders Inspire Everyone to Action” where he wrote, “Happy employees ensure happy customers. And happy customers ensure happy shareholders—in that order.”
The idea here is that if your employees aren’t happy and don’t feel like they’re “winning” with your company, everyone loses—your customers, your company and, ultimately, you.
One tool that smart companies use to help ensure happy employees—specifically, the senior leadership team who are absolutely critical to the organization’s long-term success—is a non-qualified deferred compensation (NQDC) plan.
In this episode, we drill deeper into one of the more popular types of NQDC plans: the long-term incentive plan (or LTIP).
So, what exactly are long-term incentive plans? Who is eligible to participate? How should you structure your LTIP? How do you fund it? And what are the keys to successful LTIP administration and communication?

So, what exactly are non-qualified plans?
How do they complement qualified plans (like 401k’s) in your company’s benefits program?
How do they work?
And what factors should you consider when putting together a plan?

If that’s your case, what are some investment vehicles to consider - to put that money to work, while keeping your risk tolerance and liquidity requirements in mind?

What are the biggest mistakes companies make with cash management--and how can you avoid them?
And what are some of the best practices and strategies that successful companies deploy to help them make smart decisions about where to put their cash?

In this episode, I chat with Russ Clemmer, the president at Legacy Advisory Partners.
And we talk about what to consider as businesses begin to reopen after several weeks of a nationwide shutdown from the coronavirus.
The challenge right now is that not all states—or even counties and municipalities within each state—are on the same reopen schedule. And there are a wide range of rules and guidelines in effect, depending on where you’re located.
Then there are the issues of safety and employee concerns about returning to work.
As a business owner, what should you be thinking about now to help make this transition back to work as smooth as possible for your employees and your company?
What are the potential pitfalls to avoid?
And what lessons did you learn during the shutdown that will change how your business operates moving forward?
Russ and I tackle these questions and more.
And we also have bonus content at the end of this episode that you will not want to miss!
Russ sits down with Atlanta employment attorney, Amanda Farahany, managing partner of Barrett & Farahany, one of the top employment law firms in Georgia, as they talk about what you should keep in mind--from a legal perspective--as you start to bring back your employees.
So, without further adieu, let’s dive into this episode of The 3 Wins Podcast.

In this episode of The 3 Wins Podcast, we have Russ Clemmer, president at Legacy Advisory Partners, and special guest, Bill Barbour, a former Coke executive and the principal at WTB Consulting in Atlanta. We talk about why NOW is the time to strengthen your company’s value chain - to survive and thrive in this brave new COVID-19 world.
We recorded this on April 30, 2020.
To set the stage:
Most of the U.S. is still under stay-at-home orders
By now, many Americans have received federal stimulus checks.
But the initial stimulus money to fund the PPP - the paycheck protection program loan intended to help small businesses stay afloat and keep their employees on the payroll - dried up. So, Congress recently authorized an additional few hundred billion to replenish that program.
And most states are mapping out their plans for a phased approach to re-opening their economies. A handful of states, like Georgia, have already started reopening.
So, what exactly is the Value Chain? And why is it important for CEOs and executives to be thinking about their Value Chain - especially right now?

In this episode of The 3 Wins Podcast, the executive team at Legacy Advisory Partners talks about How to Navigate Your Business in a COVID-19 World.
We recorded this on April 2, 2020.
To set the stage...
Most states have issued stay-at-home orders for non-essential businesses and travel.
And this past weekend, the Trump Administration announced that it extended the federal guidelines for stay-at-home orders for another 30 days--to April 30th.
Congress also just passed the 2-trillion-dollar stimulus bill to stem the impact of COVID-19 on the U.S. economy.
What kind of impact has the Legacy team seen that COVID-19 is having on the businesses they’re speaking with? What advice do they have for business owners and executives on how to navigate these uncharted waters?
We also dig into the $2 trillion stimulus bill. What’s their take? What provisions in the bill do they see to be the most noteworthy for small and mid-sized businesses?

In this episode of the 3 Wins Podcast, the executive team at Legacy Advisory Partners takes a deep dive into succession strategies for businesses.
That’s because, depending on the studies you look at, anywhere from 60% to 75% of privately-held businesses don’t have a succession plan in place in the event that the owner passes away, becomes disabled, or otherwise is unable to run the company.
So, why do so few business owners have a formal succession plan?
What are the most important points to consider when developing your short- and long-term transition plans?
And how does the lack of succession planning impact key leader retention?
We dive into these questions and more.
