Transition Awareness Breathing: Recent Episodes

Transition Awareness Breathing

Transition Awareness Breathing (TAB) is specifically tailored for children and their parents, who could benefit from learning how to relax and work in a stressful or changing environment. TAB can be used in a variety of settings to positively enhance relaxation and learning. TAB is not a quick fix solution program. It is a program of action. Listeners will hear suggested meditation, relaxation breathing, awareness, or mindfulness exercises to practice. The more participants practice newly learned skills, the more skills will become a natural response to everyday ups and downs. Disclaimer: Transition Awareness Breathing (TAB) is solely for educational purposes. It is not intended as a psychological intervention or substitute for psychological treatment. If participants require psychological help, families should seek the consultation of a licensed mental health professional.

This week on TAB Mindfulness Conversations, we continue our Summer Series . So far, we have learned about “fostering” change — trying new practices on like samples at the grocery store, no pressure to get it perfect. Eartha shares a personal story of practicing this with her son around his reading, shifting the focus from perfection to progress and a growth mindset.

Apple PodcastsAndroidRSSNow we are moving into our first self-compassion practice: self, not selfishness. What does it really mean to treat yourself the way you’d treat a trusted friend — the one who makes you feel safe, seen, and accepted? We notice something important along the way: those warm feelings aren’t just coming from the friend. They’re coming from inside you.

The episode closes with a compassionate body scan, moving from feet to face, thanking your body for carrying you through the ways you’ve shown up for others — even on the days marked by pain, stiffness, or tiredness.

One idea we keep returning to: treat yourself the way you treat your best friend. Your body, your breath, and your heart deserve that same patience, gratitude, and compassion.

For many of us, this is an emotional experience, because we’re not used to turning that kindness inward. And that brings us to our next step in self‑compassion: what we do with our thoughts.

In our upcoming practice, we’re going to look at the idea that “Thoughts are not facts.”

Just because a thought shows up—‘I’m not enough,’ ‘I always mess things up,’ ‘I shouldn’t feel this way’—doesn’t mean it’s the truth. We’ll learn how to notice those thoughts, give them a little space, and respond with the same compassion we started building in our body scan.

What do you actually say when a growth-mindset observation lands wrong — and the person on the other end gets defensive instead of curious?

Subscribe with your favorite podcast player

Apple PodcastsAndroidRSSIn this episode, Eartha shares practical, ready-to-use language for exactly that moment: the short phrases that redirect a conversation without triggering more defensiveness (“Not yet.” “What changed?” “That’s information, not a label.”) — and the deeper skill underneath them: staying grounded in your own growth mindset even when someone else isn’t.

We also talk about why this works better as a repeated practice than a one-time conversation — small, consistent language shifts change behavior faster than trying to win someone over in a single talk. If you’ve ever needed the right words in the moment a conversation started to go sideways, this episode is for you.

A practical toolkit for growth-mindset conversations — with someone else, and with yourself.

Along the way, Eartha explores how negative self‑talk, comparison culture, and outside criticism can hold us back — and how noticing these patterns (without judgment) becomes the first step toward real growth.

This guided session invites teens to tap into their own signals, breathe with intention, and ask honest questions about what’s actually happening inside. It’s a warm, encouraging space to explore who you’re becoming, one mindful moment at a time. What happens when your body’s alarm system rings too often to trust?

Subscribe with your favorite podcast player

Apple PodcastsAndroidRSSIn this episode of TAB Mindfulness Conversations, we travel to Pituitary Town — home to Hypothalamus Maximus, a boy with one job: watch for danger and ring the bell. When a real wolf shows up, his alarm works exactly as it should. But when shadows, strange noises, and midnight branch-scrapes start ringing that same bell, the whole town starts to wear down… right up until a real wolf returns, and nobody’s sure they can trust the alarm anymore.

Inspired by The Boy Who Cried Wolf and grounded in real neuroscience, this episode brings cortisol, the HPA stress axis, and the vagus nerve to life through story — no textbook required. Along the way, kids meet the Cortisol Drones, the Gut Bac Tower, and the Village Elder, who teaches Max (and your listener) a simple breathing tool to calm a racing alarm system in real time.

By the end, kids won’t just know what cortisol is — they’ll have a tool they can use the next time their own alarm bell rings.

In this episode:

  • How the body’s real stress response works (and why it’s not the enemy)
  • What happens when the alarm rings too often
  • A guided breathing exercise kids can use anywhere, anytime

Best for grades 4–9. Screen-free and ready to listen anywhere — the car, the classroom, or curled up at home.

We are continuing the summer series. During this episode we will explore a deep dive into how your gut and your brain are in a constant conversation.

Subscribe with your favorite podcast player

Apple PodcastsAndroidRSSRight now, deep inside your body, a powerful two-way highway called the vagus nerve is carrying messages back and forth between your gut and your brain — and what you eat determines everything about what those messages say.

Here’s what that means for your child:

When kids eat fiber-rich, whole foods that nourish healthy gut bacteria, their bodies become more receptive to the calming effects of mindfulness and breathing practice. And when they practice slow, intentional breathing — especially those long, extended exhales — their cortisol levels drop. That’s the same stress hormone that junk food spikes.

It’s all connected.

In this episode we explore the gut-brain axis — one of the most exciting discoveries in children’s wellness research — and what 2024 science is telling us about the relationship between food, stress, and emotional health. We’ll talk about why teaching kids to recognize the stress-junk food spiral is more powerful than any diet rule or willpower pep talk. And we’ll show you how mindfulness practice and smart food choices work together — each one making the other more effective.

Because here’s the truth that changes everything:

  • Just as food shapes mood — mindfulness shapes the gut. A calmer child is building a healthier microbiome. A healthier microbiome is building a calmer child.

When we teach children to care for their gut, we are teaching them to care for their brain, their emotions, and their own capacity for self-awareness.

That’s not just nutrition. That’s the foundation of lifelong wellness.

What if the most powerful mindfulness practice you could do today was already waiting for you — right in your kitchen?

Subscribe with your favorite podcast player

Apple PodcastsAndroidRSSIn this episode, we’re taking everything we’ve explored together — the calming power of intentional breathing and the art of truly tasting our food — and bringing it all home, literally. Because mindfulness doesn’t live at the spa or on the beach. It lives in the smell of something baking, the cool smoothness of dough between your fingers, and the colors of ingredients laid out on your counter.

We’re diving into kitchen-based sensory mindfulness — a gentle, flexible practice that invites you to use touch, smell, and sight as anchors to the present moment. You’ll discover how everyday tasks like cooking, baking, or even just pressing and pulling dough can become opportunities to slow down, tune in, and feel grounded.

We’ll also talk about something important: your senses aren’t just for calm — they’re also your body’s built-in warning system. Learning to listen to them mindfully means knowing when something feels off and having the wisdom to seek support.

Whether you’re cooking solo, kneading dough with your kids, or just standing in your kitchen wondering what’s for dinner — this episode meets you right where you are.

In this episode, you’ll explore:

  • How sensory awareness builds naturally on mindful breathing and mindful eating
  • Using touch, smell, and sight as doorways into the present moment
  • How the feel of dough connects us to memory, emotion, and the present
  • Practical ways to bring mindfulness into cooking, baking, and everyday kitchen tasks
  • Why your senses are also a powerful tool for body awareness and safety

No perfect setting required. No pressure to do it “right.” Just you, your hands, and a little curiosity.

This is part of an ongoing mindfulness series. If you haven’t already, check out our episodes on mindful breathing and mindful eating — together, they form a beautiful foundation for the sensory practice we’re building today.

In this episode, Eartha gently reframes the way many of us are taught to approach healthy change. So often, wellness advice asks us to adopt — to commit, to overhaul, to make a permanent decision today. But for many of us, that pressure leads to grief, sacrifice, or quitting before we even begin.

Subscribe with your favorite podcast player

Apple PodcastsAndroidRSSDrawing on her experience in nursing and as an adoptive parent, Eartha offers a different path: a two-stage model of behavior change.

Fostering is the first stage — initial awareness that something needs to shift, and a flexible, exploratory season where you get to know a new practice. Mistakes are allowed. Self-critical language is set aside. There is no forever required.

Adopting is the second stage — when a fostered practice has been lived long enough to become a steady, stable habit.

Along the way, Eartha names the unseen barriers to adoption (the feeling of loss, the pull of familiar behaviors) and offers practical supports: small realistic goals, room for mistakes, and accessible entry practices like mindful breathing and mindful walking.

This episode is an invitation to the new mindful breathing mini-series — a pressure-free space to try, learn, and grow. Share it with the family and friends who need to hear you don’t have to adopt yet. You can simply foster.

For Every Parent Who’s Wondered If Mindfulness for Kids Really Works. The Receipts Behind the TAB Program

Subscribe with your favorite podcast player

Apple PodcastsAndroidRSSIf you’ve ever watched your child melt down in the school pickup line and wonder whether anything actually helps — this episode is for you.

Eartha is the creator of the Transition Awareness Breathing (TAB) program, and since 2018 has taught children to breathe, notice, and settle their bodies through some of the biggest moments of their day. Parents have told her it works. Teachers have told her it works. The children themselves have shown Eartha it works.

But Eartha wanted to know something deeper:

Does the research agree? So, she did what most mindfulness educators never do publicly. She held her program up against the most authoritative pediatric, neurological, and mental health research available — and let the evidence speak.

In this episode, Eartha will walk you through what she found with Deep Dive research results.

→ How a Stanford study showed that just four guided breaths can measurably calm a child’s nervous system → Why the American Academy of Pediatrics’ 2026 guidelines on screen-free time matter more than ever — and what that means for your child’s brain → What a seven-year study of 28,000 children revealed about which school mindfulness programs actually work, and why → How the CASEL framework — the gold standard for social-emotional learning in U.S. schools — maps directly onto what TAB does in every session → What new neuroscience research says about why crafts, stories, and breath together calm a child more powerfully than any single tool alone

This isn’t a sales pitch. It’s a love letter to evidence — and to every parent, teacher, and school leader who has ever needed more than a feeling to trust a program with their child.

If you’ve ever doubted that mindfulness for children is real… come listen. The research has been waiting for you.

Small Words, Big Impact: 5 Tiny Language Shifts That Change Your Brain

Subscribe with your favorite podcast player

Apple PodcastsAndroidRSSIn this episode, we’re adventure into a deep dive in talking about something we use every day but rarely think about: the tiny words that shape how we feel, how we communicate, and how we move through the world.

Most of us don’t realize how much our everyday language affects our mood, our relationships, and even our stress levels. A single word can calm your nervous system — or send it into overdrive. The good news? Small shifts make a big difference mentally and physically.

We’ll explore five simple language habits that can change the way you think and feel:

  • Why the word “but” quietly erases your good intentions
  • How “if” can trap you in regret, comparison, or anxiety — and how to flip it into possibility
  • How swapping “but” for “and” helps you hold two truths at once without beating yourself up
  • Why a little honest, unfiltered language (yes, even a swear word) can sometimes build trust
  • How forcing yourself to “sound perfect” can actually stress your body and shut down your authentic voice

This isn’t about being “polished” or “correct.” It’s about learning to speak in a mindful way that supports your mental health, honors your real feelings, and helps you show up as your true self.

By the end of the episode, you’ll have a handful of tiny word shifts you can start using today — simple tools that help you communicate with more clarity, compassion, and confidence.

Three letters. One bridge. The word that joins instead of erases.

Apple PodcastsAndroidRSSIn Venice, the city lives because of its bridges. They don’t drain the canals — they let two shores stay in relationship. The word and works the same way in our sentences.

In Venice, residents cross water hundreds of times a day to reach neighbors, family, work, and worship. The bridges aren’t decorative — they’re how connection happens. That’s what and does in a sentence. It’s not decorative. It’s how two true things stay connected.

In this companion to “But: The Big Eraser,” Eartha explores how and supports the patterns mindfulness, growth mindset, and positive psychology already value — acceptance, possibility, connection, and growth. Through guided breath practice, paired sentence comparisons, and a five-step listener challenge, discover how a single word can change how you talk to others — and how you talk to yourself.

Because this is the second episode in a two-part series on the conjunctions that shape our days, listen first to “But: The Big Eraser,” then return here for the bridge.

This episode is for educators, parents, leaders, and anyone who wants their words to carry the weight of their intentions. Because mindfulness doesn’t only live in silence — it lives in our syllables.

Join Eartha in this podcast as she explores the profound psychological weight of the two-letter word “if” and its role in shaping our personal narratives. Eartha identifies three distinct versions of the word “if”: the “regret voice” that anchors individuals to the past, the “comparison trap” that diminishes self-worth, and the “humble learner” that fosters mutual encouragement. Listeners are guided through a mindfulness practice designed to shift their perspective from the stagnation of “if only” to the potential of “what if.” By reframing this small word, the source suggests that people can pivot away from ambivalence and toward self-compassion and intentional action. Eartha concludes by challenging the audience to use forward-facing language to unlock new possibilities in their daily lives.

The Challenge

Subscribe with your favorite podcast player

Apple PodcastsAndroidRSSMost adults answer “How are you?” with a reflexive, unexamined “I’m good.” But beneath that surface lies a high-pressure system of “long-term forecasts”—the relentless convergence of professional accountability, family dynamics, and financial complexity. This presentation is not just an introduction to a model; it is a challenge to the adult learner to stop surviving their internal weather and start mastering it.

The Debate Framework

We will move through a 20-minute, high-energy debate format centered on three critical tensions:

  1. Complexity vs. Simplicity: Is the Heart Weather Model too “childish” for the corporate/adult world, or is its simplicity the exact key needed to unlock emotional intelligence under pressure?
  2. Productivity vs. The Pause: Does the “Power of the Pause” make us more effective leaders, or does it slow us down in a world that demands constant “clear skies”?
  3. The Compassion Paradox: Is self-compassion a “soft” luxury, or is it a biological necessity for cardiovascular health and long-term grit?

Interactive Experience

This session is designed to be eye-catching and provocative. Expect:

  • Live Climate Mapping:
  • Meteorological Metaphors: Redefining “precipitation” not as a breakdown, but as a necessary biological release for growth.
  • Biometric Insights: Connecting mindful awareness to Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and physical endurance.

The Outcome

You won’t leave with a “feel-good” mantra. You will leave with a framework for non-judgmental observation—learning to act as a “Compassionate Internal Meteorologist” who can navigate a shifting atmosphere with grounded clarity.

  • “If you cannot accurately forecast your own heart, how can you expect to lead others through their storms?”

In this episode, Eartha pulls back the curtain on her upcoming teen novel, The Kingdom of Oura—a cinematic, emotionally charged parable about what it really feels like to grow up in a world of filters, perfection, pressure, and digital noise. Oura may be a fantasy kingdom, but every part of it reflects the real struggles today’s teens face online.

Subscribe with your favorite podcast player

Apple PodcastsAndroidRSSListeners will explore the Glimmer‑Net, a world where nobody ever has a bad hair day and everyone hides behind Digital Glamours like “Golden Prince v.4.0” or “Neon‑Mermaid.” These masks protect the ego but trap the heart, mirroring the way teens often hide their stress, fear, and exhaustion behind curated perfection.

Eartha introduces the currency of Oura—Bites, Shares, and Stinger‑Ranks—which echo the dopamine loops of likes, streaks, and viral moments. She unpacks the toxic “Snapping” and “Pinching” that teens use to survive online spaces, and the heartbreaking “Glass Walls” that keep families physically together but emotionally disconnected.

Through the journeys of Jax and Penny, listeners witness the cost of perfectionism, the pressure to perform, and the fear of being truly seen. Jax battles the addiction to digital validation and the terror of failure, while Penny struggles with generational armor, emotional isolation, and the belief that softness is a malfunction. Both teens must confront the “FalseFirewall” that keeps them safe but lonely—and decide whether they’re brave enough to be real.

This episode is an invitation to see the digital world with new eyes: to understand the mental health “System Glitches” teens face, to recognize the traps of algorithmic perfection, and to discover how mindfulness and Transition Awareness Breathing (TAB) can help young people reclaim their inner calm and agency.

The Kingdom of Oura isn’t just a story. It’s a mirror, a warning, and a path toward emotional freedom in a world that asks teens to be perfect instead of human.

Eartha welcomes listeners to the new Deep Dive Transition Awareness Breathing podcast for a “mindful break” focused on awareness and imagination. She addresses the common logistical barriers to mindfulness, such as the belief that one lacks the time or money to practice, and notes that a simple 5-to-10-minute “breather” is a free resource. Eartha explores the concept of neuroplasticity, and explains that participating in new activities can help the brain reorganize neuron connections and improve focus. Throughout the exercise, Eartha encourages listeners to accept mental distractions as normal and to focus on their unique path, strengths, and personal growth. Next listeners are invited to deep dive to explore different types of boundaries and barriers that prevent personal and professional growth. Eartha identifies emotional barriers—specifically anger, pride, and anxiety—as major obstacles to open communication and peak performance. The discussion also covers physical and environmental barriers, such as workplace designs that create distance between people or background noises that cause distractions. Eartha highlights how perceptional barriers, such as stereotypes about different age groups, can create unfair expectations. The session concludes with a new activity called “Mindful Chat”. When life becomes overwhelming, it is common to feel as though your creativity or drive has vanished. However, it is essential to recognize that you may simply be in a period of dormancy. Just as grass turns brown during extreme heat to survive, we often pull back and do only the “bare minimum” to live when we are under significant stress.

Subscribe with your favorite podcast player

Apple PodcastsAndroidRSSRecognizing the State of Dormancy

The first step toward recovery is awareness. Pay attention to the parts of your life that have gone dormant—perhaps you have stopped your creative hobbies or stepped away from community involvement. It is vital during this time to release self-judgment regarding how long you have been in this state.

Even when external “experts” or critics suggest that your hope or creativity is “dead,” remember that they may not understand your internal process. Like a garden recovering from a drought, your inner self knows how to function in extreme temperatures; it just needs the right environment to return.

Watering Your Awareness

To move from dormancy back into growth, you must begin “watering” your emotions and awareness. Here are key strategies for this transition:

  • Use the Breath as an Anchor: When emotional turmoil is high, use your breath to bring yourself down from that”heat”. Whether it is a simple reflection or a technique like “candle breathing,” the breath serves as a tool to recharge and strategize with calm thoughts.
  • Verbalize Your Feelings: To prevent a buildup of strong emotions, verbalize what you are going through. This helps the brain reorganize and recalibrate, preventing the internal “explosion” that leads to damaging behaviors like overeating or overstimulation.
  • Filter External Negativity: People around you may offer criticisms or negativity, but often this is a reflection of their own stress. Instead of taking these comments to heart, focus on your own progress.

Embracing the “New Growth”

It is important to realize that recovery takes time and will not happen overnight. As you work through trauma or stress, the growth that eventually emerges will not be exactly the same as what was there before—it is New Growth.

This new version of yourself is often stronger and richer because of the strength gathered during the struggle. By using your breath to release anger and tension, you allow a sense of gratitude to take root, eventually bringing forth new ideas and a renewed sense of joy.

If you find that you are doing the same things repeatedly with no change, see it as an indicator to re-evaluate and reflect. Growth is a learning experience, and sometimes we must recognize when we need help to make our “inner garden” pretty again. Don’t lose hope—the green is coming back.

In this podcast, I am sharing information that will help provide an element of moving forward toward a healthy healing process because of erratic, chaotic, and stressful environments.

Subscribe with your favorite podcast player

Apple PodcastsAndroidRSSI share an equation that breaks down elements of stress. I learned about this equation during a workshop that I completed with Gina M. Biegel in her Stressed Teens workshop, Mindfulness-Based Treatment Approaches, Second Edition 2014 189-212. Gina credits this equation with Shinzen Young (2004). This equation is stress equals pain times blockers(S=PxB). This can be a helpful tool that can help focus on emotional, environmental, and social factors that contribute to current destructive environments.

I define “destructive” environments/hosts as situations or activities that intentionally disrupt peace and promote harm to communities or individuals based on gender, religion, race, culture, or economic status. Destructive environments get a lot of attention. The goal of harmful host/environments are to get attention or control. We may not have much control over destructive behaviors that feed into the media, educational environment, or political arenas. We do have control over how we respond. When something tragic and chaotic happens, the typical reaction may be to freeze because the mind is trying to capture what is happening.

We’re trying to scan our environment so that we can respond.

The calmer we are, the better we can respond with strategy and logic so that we can respond safely to the best of our ability to keep ourselves and our families safe. But even then, when there are erratic conditions, we’re stumbling and trying to make sense of it. As a result, the mental pain, the physical pain, and the emotional pain are something that may take a while to recover from. That recovery is so important to recognize what has gone on and an acceptance of the pain and the loss. Identifying behaviors or situations that prevent us from healing and improving the future is also essential.

Eartha focused on understanding and managing burnout, emphasizing the power of mindset and mindfulness. Our discussion begins by revisiting the previous TAB podcast of adopting a “vacation state of mind”—not just as a pleasant thought, but as a body scan and awareness exercise to notice how positive imagery changes our physiological responses. Eartha acknowledged that while vacations are beneficial, they are not a sustainable or permanent solution to burnout; instead, the mind’s ability to adapt and interpret stressors is key.

Subscribe with your favorite podcast player

Apple PodcastsAndroidRSSWe will discover the central theme as personal agency: Eartha invites participants to reflect on who is truly in charge of their mind. She explored how external factors—like schedules, traffic, or unexpected events—can trigger stress responses, but ultimately, individuals have the power to choose their reactions. The importance of recognizing stress triggers, being realistic with goals, and forgiving oneself for mistakes was underscored.

Practical strategies were shared, including:

  • Asking for help and seeking clarification when needed, especially in professional settings, to reduce unnecessary stress.
  • Reframing problems as challenges and learning opportunities.
  • Avoiding the use of vacations as “escape-cations,” since unresolved issues will persist after returning.

Eartha concludes with a guided mindfulness practice, inviting participants to mentally transport themselves to a favorite vacation spot, engage their senses, and use deep breathing to relax. This “mini mindfulness break” was recommended as a tool to use before meetings, starting the day, or during stressful moments—particularly relevant for healthcare professionals and educators.

The overall message: Mindfulness and intentional mental shifts can help manage burnout, and small, regular practices can reinforce one’s sense of control and well-being in challenging environments.

This episode delves into the delicate balance between intrinsic passion and extrinsic support—especially in education and the workforce. Eartha shares heartfelt insights into how external motivators—often necessary for those navigating unmet basic needs—can coexist with inner drive when approached with care and intention.

Subscribe with your favorite podcast player

Apple PodcastsAndroidRSSUsing the gentle analogy of a child learning to ride a bike, Eartha illustrates the importance of scaffolding growth for new learners, like graduate nurses, so they can build confidence without feeling overwhelmed. The discussion draws on foundational research by Edward Deci and Alfie Kohn, highlighting how extrinsic rewards may dampen intrinsic motivation, especially for tasks that are naturally enjoyable. Yet, through personal stories and compassionate reflection, Eartha challenges this notion, emphasizing that emotional sensitivity and relevance are key to sustaining engagement.

At the end of the podcast enjoy a seven minute bonus mini-podcast I developed with Microsoft’s Copilot. I asked Copilot a series of questions regarding intrinsic and extrinsic motivators. The bonus episode “Motivation Through Time”, invites the listener to explore the quiet power of intrinsic motivation—the inner spark that drives us to learn, grow, and connect with purpose.

Through a warm and insightful discussion, we journey across the lifespan, beginning with the natural curiosity of childhood. We reflect on how this innate drive can fade during adolescence, often overshadowed by external expectations like grades and performance. Yet, hope emerges as we examine how intrinsic motivation can reawaken and stabilize in adulthood, shaped by personal values, meaningful relationships, and lived experience.

Listeners will discover compassionate strategies for nurturing this inner drive—such as fostering autonomy, creating space for skill-building, and honoring each individual’s unique path. Together, we emphasize the importance of cultivating environments that uplift and inspire, rather than relying solely on rewards or pressure.

In summary educators and leaders are encouraged to communicate purpose clearly, recognize individual goals, and create environments where both types of motivation can flourish. Reflect on your personal incentives and the quiet joy of accomplishment—motivation is not a formula, but a relationship. Remember when we support the heart of motivation, we empower lifelong learning, resilience, and joy.

| Study / Author | Key Findings | Implications | | Edward Deci (1971) | External rewards (like money) reduced students’ intrinsic interest in puzzle-solving once the rewards stopped. | Incentives can undermine natural curiosity and enjoyment of learning. | | Alfie Kohn – Punished by Rewards(1994) | Rewards are a form of control that shift focus from learning to earning. They reduce creativity, persistence, and long-term motivation. | Encourages educators to foster autonomy and intrinsic motivation instead of using bribes. | | Simon Burgess et al. (2021) | Incentives had minimal impact on academic performance in a large-scale randomized trial. Only a small subset of students responded positively. | Incentives may not be cost-effective or broadly beneficial in educational settings. | | Brookings Institution Report | Incentives tied to effort (e.g., reading books) are more effective than those tied to outcomes (e.g., test scores), but long-term benefits are limited. | Suggests careful design of incentive programs, with emphasis on effort and growth. |

Welcome to Mindful Guided Journaling, a space where creativity meets mindfulness! Inspired by a YouTube video on guided journaling, I wanted to create an engaging journaling activity for my students. When I asked them, “What do you think about journaling?” They said, “Journaling is about writing your thoughts and feelings. —Their responses were eye-opening. In mindful guided journaling, the goal is to help unlock creativity, thoughts, and emotions. Remember that mindfulness uses our five senses to observe our surroundings and emotions without judgment. In this podcast, I will share ideas on how to boost a non-judgmental perspective when we make mistakes. My students often want to start over, thinking their first attempt isn’t good enough. I encourage them to see this as a rough draft—an evolving creative spark. Instead of stopping, we can embrace the process, letting ideas flow and grow.

This is the final episode on Energy and how Eartha was motivated to write my new book “When Two Worlds Collide”. Eartha summarizes major points from the first two episodes. The major point is you can’t see “pure energy”, but you can see the effects of energy in the form of movement, light, heat, sound, or other changes happening around you, which are essentially how we perceive energy is present and being used.

Subscribe with your favorite podcast player

Apple PodcastsAndroidRSSKey points about energy and its appearance:

  • No physical form:
  • Energy doesn’t have a physical form or “essence” on its own; it’s always associated with something that is moving or changing.
  • Observing effects:
  • We can only observe the effects of energy, like a ball rolling (kinetic energy), a lit bulb (light energy), or a hot stove(heat energy).
  • According to the statistics, the world population is decreasing, especially in Europe, in Asia, and America. The population in Africa is not decreasing, it’s increasing. If there’s a population gap, societies have a choice to come together and work together for a future existence. As leaders of our energies, we must be open to the awareness that we have choices in our behavior.
  • Summary questions: The following are questions to help reflect what has been cover in the series about Energy.
    • What are the implications of blending masculine and feminine energies in our daily lives?
    • In what ways do masculine and feminine energies manifest in leadership?
    • What are the potential consequences of sticking to outdated leadership platforms in a changing society?
    • What creative strategies can parents use to encourage their children’s mindfulness practice?
    • What do we do when faced with situations that challenge our mindfulness practice?
    • How do we tie mindfulness into our daily lives?

During this podcast, I want to spend time checking in with you. How are you doing? Are you taking time for you? Let us take time now to remember the concepts of mindfulness, emphasizing the importance of being aware of our senses, thoughts, feelings, and emotions without judgment. Research indicates often, when we get distracted by thoughts and emotions, we focus on negativity. The goal of mindfulness isn’t to deny reality or live in a non-existent world but to pay attention to the present moment. Sometimes, that may be difficult when trying to manage our stress. We may tend to ruminate over negative experiences.

Subscribe with your favorite podcast player

Apple PodcastsAndroidRSSThe adverse effects of rumination and reliving past experiences, particularly those involving trauma or bad relationships, wear negatively on the body. When the mind and body respond to stress, anxiety, and depression over an extended period, adverse effects can lead to physical health issues such as high blood pressure, difficulty sleeping, and even physical illnesses. It is important to recognize these patterns and take steps to manage them to prevent further negative impacts on one’s well-being. On the other hand, a person can ruminate over positive events that can have positive effects.

Another part of mindfulness is not dwelling on the past or worrying about the future. Practicing mindfulness with a non-harmful judgment approach helps us to see things clearly. It gives the mind a break from trying to analyze. When we allow ourselves to judge ourselves or others, we set ourselves up to see our world negatively without hoping to change the future. Judgment and negative self-talk can lead to a negative self-image. Share this information with others who may be struggling with negativity.

Join Eartha as she interviews a special guest, Mr. Cedric Elevancini

(Banker and Financial Advisor). Mr. Elevancini shares his expertise from his 12 to 14 years of experience in banking, real estate, and business advising. Cedric emphasizes the critical need to teach children about financial management from a young age. The psychological influences of buying, money management, and the development of saving habits are passed to childhood learning through parental financial behaviors. Parents are encouraged to be aware of the role of their parental behavior as a role model for children and their unique influences in guiding children to make responsible financial decisions. Financial stress develops when people try to live beyond their means or income. When people compare their material wealth with others, stress can be an outcome.

As a result, it is very common for people to come into the bank and request extra money, like a credit card, or to request some advances on their credit card or lines of credit. Acquiring a loan, credit card, or cash advances are financial tools. Sometimes, financial tools are necessary. However, we must manage our finances with awareness and good judgment. There’s nothing wrong with using those financial tools to accomplish a job or goal. Remembering that family is essential in one’s life is paramount. Money is a tool that provides a livelihood for family life.

When practicing mindfulness awareness, we pay attention to our breath, thoughts, and feelings. And we pay attention to any discomforts, pressures, or pain. During this podcast, Eartha, your guide, will lead you through the first step of creating a mindfulness action plan. Your mindfulness action plan is your personal tool. Each plan is unique to help focus on refilling. Understand that it may take a little time to grow accustomed to taking personal time to recharge energy. That is OK. You will find when you take time to recharge your energy, you will have more energy to help those around you. Here are a few points to keep in mind:

  • Be aware of your time.
  • Be aware of chunks of time you spend on things you want rather than on things you need. Ask yourself, “Iswhatever I am spending my time on benefiting others?” Be true to yourself and your findings.
  • Be open to adjust and be flexible.

For example, adjust your time for healthy sleep hygiene habits. This may include turning off all social media or electronics after a specific time. It may consist of journaling. Remember, this is your time. It’s not time to grow quiet so that you can pour someone else your energy. This is your time to recharge yourself.

Another suggestion is to be aware of the amount of time you’re spending on social media. Be open and be truly honest. How much time are you willing to cut back and take a social media vacation? Specifically, how much time are you willing to stay away from social media for a little bit of time? The importance of a healthy sleep hygiene habit and healthy social media interactions is crucial for growing positive energy. Being honest with yourself about your social media habits can lead to positive changes in your energy levels.

Today I am happy to introduce an extraordinary guest, Chweny Popitt. Chweny joins me to help young Transition Awareness Breathing friends learn about positive and mindful options in respond to unpleasant and painful situations. The information is positive and offers healthy perspectives and options for grown-ups too. Families will take away easy-to-follow suggestions to move through challenges and to give positive and healthy support to the children.

When we experience pain, our body sends a message to the brain. Our initial reaction to pull away from the pain is a natural response. We have all experienced some pain/discomfort at one time or another. As we grow older, we learn how to keep ourselves safe. However, sometimes pain leads us to an unpleasant response. And that is where mindfulness comes in. A few mindful techniques this podcast will cover are skills that can use with faced with unpleasant situations. Here are a few.

  • Talk about feelings. Describe the pain.
  • Ask for help.
  • Write or draw in a journal about how you feel
  • Work on a craft or art to redirect energy into positivity
  • Practice mindful walking
  • Do no harm. Stay away from harmful activities.
  • Breathe
  • Monitor positive self-care activities. (Get rest. Limit screen time. Eat healthily)

In our episode today, I invite you to listen to a mindful practice performed by tweens (ages 11 – 13). These are students in my Transition Awareness Breathing enrichment class at one of the local charter schools. These TAB friends have been attending Transition Awareness Breathing one hour a day each week for approximately six to nine months. They shared with me that they have become more aware of how their bodies respond to various environmental situations within the last few weeks. Tween TAB’s friend’s favorite mindfulness practice is mindful eating. They learned mindfulness, awareness, and relaxation breathing techniques at the beginning of their TAB training. Most of them had never practiced mindfulness skills independently before.

For me teaching older children TAB was a new endeavor. Current times are revealing that there is a need for older children to benefit from learning mindfulness skills as they grow into their teen years. I was still determining how this would work and was willing to try. So, I took it upon myself to find a mindfulness program that targets teens. I came across Gina Briegel, MA LMSRT instructor program called “Stress Teen.” As I learned different approaches and material from the “Stress Teen” model, I began implementing some of the content into my TAB tween classes. A few weeks ago, I asked the group to share what practice they would be willing to demonstrate in their small group setting. They chose to review the mindful qualities, body scan, and relaxation breathing.

I was amazed when they shared their practices in the small group setting. My goal was to use the teach-back learning method to determine their comprehension and skill level of what they learned. I was amazed. Each leads the group without prompting or a script. I asked them if they would allow me to record their practice. They agreed. I obtained their parent’s permission to record only their voices without their names. On the day of the recording, they expressed nervousness and asked if they could use my script from Gina Briegel’s Stress Teen guide. In this recording, three tweens will demonstrate their mindful practice with the help of the Stress Teen guide scripts. They did a great job, and I am very proud that they were willing to share what they learned with others.

In this episode, I discuss how fear can steal freedom and lives. Fear is a natural survival response to the environment when the senses feel threatened. When a fear response takes lives, it is a destructive resource. I thought sharing the podcast I did a few years ago called “Fear Survivor” would be a good idea. Join me in this rebroadcast and focus on how fear controls freedom.

We look at fear from an outside point of view—the marketing of fear as an entertainment commodity versus an event’s reaction. I will guide us through the response of fear and where fear is born. This podcast is not a therapy session. Its purpose is to provide educational information about fear. Fear is a survivor’s response to the body. The residual or after-effects of fears can interfere with life. Sometimes professional help is needed to guide us out of the clutches of fear souvenirs. If you need assistance, please get in touch with your healthcare professional. In this episode, I share an example of a terrifying personal experience and the fear-souvenirs which interfered with my life at a very young age. With the knowledge of mindfulness, awareness, and relaxation breathing, I am happy to share tips on how to put out the fire of the haunting paralyzing effects of fear. The process takes time and a positive growth mindset to move on.

During this episode, the goal is to mentally step back and see how what we are going through is a transition. Change is constant, whether we are aware of it or not. When we go through changes or transitions, those changes take work. The transition can represent the process of growth. Understanding the transition process gives our brain information on what to be aware of in how our body responds to a change. We can focus on our emotions and thinking as we adapt to the change. The process may be uncomfortable, and it may take work. We also can be aware of how that change affects us and our environment.

In this podcast, I guide you through reflections and awareness of lessons learned from experiencing rejection and pain when doors of opportunities are closed. We will explore the strengths we gained to prepare us for new ventures and beginnings.

Humor can be a natural reaction in dealing with uncomfortable situations. Join me as I guide our discussion on how to use humor to move through embarrassing situations. Humor can be helpful in lightening events of stressful situations. The first step is to be aware of your reaction to embarrassment. Be very cautious when using humor. Focus on one’s self when using humor. In some situations, humor may be helpful, but using humor from another person’s perspective may not. Not all conditions are appropriate for humor because we are using the tool of humor from our perspective. Use a mindful eye, and be aware that if someone is hurt, traumatized, or in a crisis, the more mindful response is to ask if the person needs help. Sometimes people laugh or smile during stressful or embarrassing situations. They may not be happy. They may be trying to adjust to a stressful or awkward situation. Therefore, bring a sense of loving kindness and compassion as a response to be helpful. Humor is not always appropriate for all cases. Today, I will share examples of using humor to move through an embarrassing situation and reflect on the mindfulness tools to help push through the stress of embarrassment and uncomfortableness.

I will be your guide in this practice activity. Did you know that we perform mindfulness practices with focus during everyday activities? Join me in a brief mindful eating review. I highlight how we naturally block out distracting thoughts in our daily lives. Also, I share a method I recently learned from Gina Biegel, MA LMFT, owner and consultant of the “Stress Teens Program.” This practice is called “Railroad Activity.” Before you begin the practice, I invite you to get into a comfortable position. You can lie down or sit down, whatever is comfortable for you. This is also an imagery practice. The goal is to increase focus on the breath as an anchor. Be aware of the movements of your body with your breath. Notice any changes in temperature as you breathe in your nose and out of your mouth. Let your breath be natural. Understand as you practice, distracting thoughts may come into your mind. Realize it is normal for distracting thoughts to come and go. Enjoy your practice.

What action steps will you take to improve your mindful qualities right now?

During my travels to Israel, an insightful 14-year-old teenager shared how to bring experiences of joy and happiness that our Land and Spirit tour group experienced in Israel and at the Western Wall. I got permission from Rabbi Levi and Naomi Bledsofsky to share their daughter’s, Rifka, suggestion. As Rifka shared her suggestion among a large group of Jewish women, I realized that her suggestion was an analogy that captured Mindfulness Qualities as compiled by Gina M. Biegel, MA, LMFT (Creator and Founder of Stressed Teens). In this session, I invite you to use mindful eyes and look at how we envision a wall. Walls are usually described as stone or brick structures to provide a barrier to separate or prevent an escape. In this episode, I share a mindfulness perspective about walls. In mindfulness, we use our five senses to bring awareness to how we get information from the environment and how we respond to our environment. Join me to find out how we can strategize to use mindful qualities to create intangible walls which build positive worlds. What we create may not be perfect. However, what we make will be gems of non-tangible treasure that can impact entities of positivity for generations to come.

Join me on a Mindful walk through the ancient streets of Israel. I invite you to put on comfortable walking shoes. Then, open your imagination as I guide you through practice with the sounds of Israel.

I am happy to share this gift with you when I was in Israel. The most valuable mindfulness technique I used was mindful walking—Our tour group walked on different archaeological discoveries. We took in the sights of ancient worlds. Even the stones of the streets and buildings had a story. Our tour group was made aware of markings and designs of various times of centuries on old stones.

I realize I could be walking the same path King David walked. It was mind-boggling and humbling. Yet, I grew stronger in appreciation for the hard work, struggles, and determination that went into preserving Israel, her culture, and her heritage. I recognize my existence is small. Yet, I felt a connection with generations that walk the path before me, so that can reveal how we are paving king steps for generations to come.

A special note of heartful thanks to all those of Land and Spirit and The Rohr Jewish Learning Institute for giving over 800 Jews the ultimate Jewish education and experience of a lifetime.

How do we chisel away the excess “marble” that gets in the way of authenticity? From the perspective of Michelangelo(the Renaissance artist), looking at the extra slabs can be seen as visionary. By locking ourselves in negative habits or lifestyles, we could unintentionally be contained within a self-limitation world. This podcast will explore ways to chip away slabs of behaviors that hide our authenticity. First, take a mindful moment and do an awareness check. Then, prepare to explore how to get to your authentic self. It is valuable to bring forth an awareness of what keeps us from becoming our true selves. Your awareness check can begin by asking yourself the following questions. How are you doing? What are you doing to keep true to yourself? How are your behaviors reflecting the true you? This podcast is part 2 of “Sculpturing authenticity by releasing the true you” And is an inspiration inspired by positivepsychology.com.

When you look in a mirror, who do you see? Of course, you see your reflection beyond the reflection. Who else do you see? Earth is a place to do. Heaven is a place to be. Your personality reflects your reality.Join me with my guest Mr. Howe Nestel on the final episode of “How to move from intention to action.” Howie shared a concept he learned from Dr. Wayne Dyer. Dr. Wayne Dyer was an internationally renowned author and speaker in the field of self-development. Dr. Dyer left us with a reflection that whatever is inside us comes out when stress happens. Our outer perspective (external behavior) may be reactive and generate misinformation because our stress reaction is negative.

Howie Nestel shared that our environment reflects the type of person we are. Try seeing the positive first. Use adaptability as a superpower. Be aware that our perspective about a situation may be wrong. We sometimes talk ourselves out of the positive experience because we are unwilling to adapt and create a reaction that freezes our movement toward happiness and chooses to exist in a hostile environment. Howie points out that happiness is an action, and we must progress toward happiness. Happiness is not a dream utopia. Having a positive destination will help us start the movement toward happiness. Breaking procrastination into chunks of fun, action, and opportunitiesIn this episode, Howie Nestel continues sharing treasures of information on moving from intentions to actions. In the first episode, Mr. Nestel explains how forward progress may be a key motivator toward moving out of a rut from good intentions. In this second episode, Howie explains how stacking opportunities and taking extreme responsibility breaks the tangles of procrastination—taking the small step of being aware of perceptions and reactions to the unknown and accepting a realistic vision of our influence within our environment. Howie calls the step extreme responsibility. Extreme responsibility is to take responsibility for what happened to you. Then redefine the situation. “Did it happen to me? Or did it happen for me?” If we redefine the problem as something that happened for me, we can discover a lesson in the situation. When we become aware of the lesson, we are less likely to make the same error. As a result, our procrastination time is transformed into action time. Transform mistakes or misfortunes into a time into a learning experience opportunity.

The next step in moving forward is to recognize procrastination as a time to change positions and move to help another person. In this episode, Howie shares how to discover action steps to improve situations for others. Allow yourself to move past feelings of hesitation or doubt. Find enjoyment in doing something new, different, and fun. Happiness is a treasure found in life’s processes extracted through gratitude. Enjoy your mindfulness gratitude practice.
