Marriage is a beautiful gift. And also, one of the hardest relationships we face in life. It’s been said that “Marriage is one of God’s primary workshops for change.” So, how can we grow, and change, to be more like Christ, along with our spouse?

Rich and Wendy Crawford, are marriage counselors with Focus on the Family. They are leading the Journey to Us marriage conference coming up in Oneonta, NY on September 27th and 28th. They talk with Terese Main about how two imperfect people, who come together in marriage, can grow to be more like Christ.

The Bible is full of gardens. From Eden to Eternity, they are a place to worship, nourish ourselves, and to work. There is so much we can learn from our earthly gardens too. Maybe you’ve spent months toiling and are now reaping the harvest. It’s evidence of God’s faithfulness.

Andrea Burke is a Rochester, NY based gardener who is also a lover of Jesus. Her book, “A Bit of Earth” is a divine blend of poetry, devotional and gardening tips.

It’s a role often unseen—but deeply influential. The role of a mother. When you look at successful families, you’ll often find a sweet, quiet spirit in the shadows. That is the case with Helen Smallbone. You probably know her daughter, Rebecca St. James, or her sons, Luke and Joel of For King & Country. They’re just three of her seven kids. And then there’s her husband, David—who is also prominent in the Christian music world. Cheering them all on is a woman filled with grace and determination. She is the focus of the upcoming movie, “Unsung Hero.” She’s also the author of the book, “Behind the Lights,” which tells the incredible story of her family’s move from Australia to the American music scene. It’s something we don’t like to talk about. It’s something we don’t even like to think about. But the reality is 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 13 boys experience some sort of child sexual abuse. It’s usually perpetrated by someone the child knows. Those are the stats from the CDC. Those numbers are likely under-reported, because often times abuse is kept secret.

Faith Ingraham has lived with that secret most of her life. She grew up in the church, as a pastor’s kid and was repeatedly abused by her father. Her mother became aware of the abuse. But it remained in the dark for the rest of the family, and for the church. Now, Faith and her husband, Dale teach churches how to respond biblically. Their “Breaking the Silence” seminar is coming up February 11th at Grace Community Church in Painted Post, NY. You can find out more here. God never promises an easy life. In fact, the Bible tells us we will have trouble. And so often, those trials lead us right into the arms of Jesus. For the Kelly family, their second born, Hunter represented so much promise. The son of Hall of Fame Buffalo Bills quarterback Jim Kelly, Hunter was born with the expectation of football games in the yard and hunting trips with his dad. But Hunter would never speak a word or throw a perfect spiral. His life, though short, was profound. Hunter’s mother, Jill Kelly, and his sister, Erin Kelly Bean, recently joined us for the Family Life Christmas Ladies Luncheon. I hope you find our conversation overflowing with hope, in the midst of trials.

Find out more about the Kelly Family at Hunter’s Hope. And look for The Light Your Heart With Hope podcast on Apple Podcasts or whatever platform you listen on. Jill’s book, Without A Word tells the story of Hunter’s life and how God moved in their family. She has also written several books and devotionals on grief and hope. Erin is the author of Kelly Tough, a book about her relationship with her dad.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 1 Corinthians 13:4-5

In this week's episode, learn to shift your focus—and let in more joy.

When was the last time you worshiped? The obvious answer might be Sunday morning, right? When everyone was singing at church. But worship happens outside church. In fact, it can happen without music. And you can stand in church, singing, and not really be worshiping. In this episode, Terese digs into what the Bible says. And maybe those of us who can’t really sing so hot will feel a little better about worship.

Do you ever find yourself standing in front of the refrigerator, or with a cupboard door open, looking for something? You’re hungry. Or at least you think so. Having struggled with food addiction most of my life, I feel you. Most addictions aren’t about the substance. It’s not about the drugs, or alcohol, or work, or food. It’s about the pain that item is soothing. Or trying to. Because at the root of every addiction is a need for healing. And the only true source of healing is God. In this episode, Terese digs into what the Bible says about food and hunger.

I love this time of year. And it’s not because of the pumpkin spice and the falling leaves. I love the rhythm of Autumn. It’s when our lives get back into routine. School is in session. Church activities kick back up. And with the holiday season just around the corner, it’s the time of year when we know what’s coming. Like clockwork, stores fill with pumpkins. And then turkeys. And then trees. Some might find the predictability boring. I find it comforting. It’s a great time of year to reset your life. It’s like a new year—without all the pressures of resolutions. There are five areas we’re going to look at: mind, home, body, relationships, and heart. By the time snow falls, you could be living your best life!

When you hear the words, “Biblical Theology,” what comes to mind? Maybe stacks of dusty old books and scholars hunched over a table, toiling by candlelight? But what if Biblical Theology was a way to make scripture come alive—to help you understand it more completely—so you grow even closer in your relationship with Jesus? Nancy Guthrie is an author and Bible teacher who will be spending this fall helping women across America learn how to study the Bible better. She talks to Terese about a more complete way to look at God's Word. Find out more about her, the books she has written, and her upcoming workshops at www.nancyguthrie.com.

I’ve really been struggling with something—and maybe you have too. I can’t think about it for too long because it really consumes me. It’s the situation in Afghanistan. Why am I here? And what can I do? When you figure those things out, you have found your purpose!

Voice of the Martyrs has some great advice on how to pray:

PRAY FOR GOD’S PROTECTION. The situation on the ground is fluid right now. Pray for God’s protection over His people. PRAY FOR WISDOM. Ask God to bless our brothers and sisters with discernment as they decide whether to stay or go and even with whom they should talk. PRAY FOR FELLOWSHIP. Believers in Afghanistan often must keep their faith a secret — even from family members. Pray that God will help each Afghan believer to connect and fellowship with at least one other believer in person, by phone or through some other technology. Pray that God will remind them that they are not alone, but are part of the global body of Christ. PRAY FOR SAFE PASSAGE. Pray that God will provide safe passage to those who feel led by God to leave Afghanistan and provide for their immediate needs in their new location. PRAY THAT MUSLIMS WILL MEET CHRIST. The Taliban claim to be “true Muslims,” strictly adhering to Sharia (Islamic law). As Muslims in Afghanistan see this cruel face of Islam, pray that they will be drawn to Jesus Christ, the shepherd Savior who doesn’t oppress but instead chose to lay down His life for His sheep. PRAY FOR CHRISTIANS TRYING TO HELP. For decades, VOM has provided help and encouragement to Christians in Afghanistan. Pray for the wisdom of front-line workers, and pray that God will open new pathways for them to continue their work under Taliban control.

If you’ve ever stopped and really thought about your life, you’ve probably been in awe of where God has taken you from and where He is taking you to. Tasha Layton knows that well and you’ve probably heard her heart in the song, “Look What You’ve Done.” But beyond her writing and her talent, I’m impressed by the depth of Tasha’s heart. She’s a woman who knows the Bible and isn’t afraid to talk about how good God is. Tasha Layton is performing with Newsong at the Redeemed Music Festival at Grace Baptist Church at 5471 Clarkstown Road in Muncy, PA. It's a free outdoor concert but a love offering will be taken. Have you ever been lied to? Chances are you're lied to on a daily basis by the Father of Lies. Satan is an enemy of God who wants you to weaken in your faith. Don't let him. In this episode, you'll learn some strategies to help you spot lies and replace them with the truth. Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. 2Corinthians 10:5

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Romans 12:2

There are a couple of books I have read that can help walk you through the process of using truth to change your thinking. One is “Get Out Of Your Head” by Jennie Allen. She talks a lot about the spiral of thoughts we can get ourselves wrapped up in, and how to flip that spiral to go towards God. I talked to Jennie about her book in Episode 4 of Terese Talk. Another book that I’ve just started reading is “Truthfilled” by Ruth Chou Simons. Both do an excellent job at pointing you towards scripture to replace the lies in your head with the truth from God’s Word.

Same God: God the Creator. God the Comforter. God the Christ

The same God who makes the planets spin Tells the tide when it should rise Put the color in my eyes

Ah, Sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you. Jeremiah 32:17

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. Psalm 139:13-14

You're catching every tear as it falls I know You'll never change Even when I'm feeling far away

He will swallow up death forever; and the Lord God will wipe away tears from all faces, and the reproach of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken. Isaiah 25:8

He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” Revelation 21:4

You're a God of grace and empathy You know how it feels to cry 'cause You lived a human life

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. John 1:14

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Hebrews 4:15

Never say never. You’ve probably heard that phrase before. Never is a powerful word. Because it’s absolute. Definitive. No wiggle room with never. So when never shows up in the Bible, we need to pay attention. It’s God’s way of being firm. Not wavering in His promises. In this episode, Terese goes through the Bible, with verses of God's promises of "never" and "always."

Have you ever asked the question, "What would Jesus do?" Well, Jesus loved to ask questions. When you see a question mark in your Bible, in red letters, it’s a good habit to ask your own question, “What is Jesus really asking?” Usually there’s a deeper meaning—a bigger concept He is trying to get us to think about. So, let’s look at some of the things He asked and learn more about His heart. Look for the latest episode of Terese Talk every Tuesday morning!

This week we celebrated “I Am In Control Day.” But are you? And are you supposed to be? The times we are in might be leaving you feeling a little uncertain—maybe worried. In the past year, you might have tried to take control of your health—your finances—your kids’ schooling—your emotional well-being. But have you really been in control? No way! This has been the most out of control year any of us have experienced. We can’t control things like how a virus spreads, or how that impacts the economy. We can’t control what the school district decides to do with hybrid or in-person learning. And we can’t control how much toilet paper is on the shelf of the grocery store. But in all of those circumstances, we can control one thing: us. And how we react to it all. Take just a few minute and hear more of what Terese has to say about control.

Hi. It's Terese. Normally this is where we put all the fancy-sounding podcasting stuff about what's coming up on this episode. TBH, this episode terrified me. I heard Annie F. Downs speak a few years ago and instantly fell in love. Like in a "I-wanna-be-your-best-friend-but-not-in-a-creepy-stalker" kinda way. Her books are fun to read and draw you right into her ginormous, joy-filled personality. So, interviewing her, was kinda scary for me. But, of course, she is amazing and all I could have imagined. I think it turned out pretty great. And if Annie F. Downs and I ever end up in the same room, I MIGHT just have the courage to wave and say "Hey, you!"

Do you find all your friends are about the same age as you? Do they have kids about the same age as your kids? Have you all been married about the same length of time? You might be missing out on one of God's biggest gifts--multi-generational friendship. The book of Titus outlines God's plan for how women are supposed to interact with each other; with the older teaching the younger.

"The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, Titus 2:3-4"

In this episode, hear from two of my friends--one younger and one older, about what we can learn from each other. It might just encourage you to make a new friend!

Did you know that I once rapped on stage with Mandisa? It's true. It was at Kingdom Bound and she needed someone who knew the TobyMac part of her Good Morning song. I told her I could do it, and she let me! Right before I was supposed to go on stage, my mind blanked. And then as I walked out on stage, it all came back to me. She said I nailed it. I realized then how brave it is that Mandisa gets out on stage every night!

https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=735197183205107 In this episode, listen as Mandisa shares about overcoming...again and again. Hear how the Word of God helped bring her out of depression and back into the light. If you enjoy this podcast, consider supporting the ministry of Family Life at www.fln.org/giving. How do you keep your eyes on Jesus when the whole world seems to be changing right before your eyes? On this episode of Terese Talk, Biblical Counselor and Healing Journey author Cyndy Sherwood shares some good advice for finding peace in the middle of life's storms. Find out more about her ministry here.

Sometimes you just have to get away! My husband and I were able to take a road trip to Ohio and Kentucky. Along the way we enjoyed some outdoor sightseeing, some great meals, and a morning at the Creation Museum. Complimentary media passes were provided for my visit, with no promise of on-air or online mention. The Creation Museum is a 45-minute drive from the Ark Encounter. Children 10 and under are free at the Ark through 2020.

Tip from Terese: If you decide to visit, take your time. We walked slowly through the gardens outside before going into the museum. There is also a kids playground and petting zoo to take your time at. You really do have time to linger and read at each section. There was a great exhibit on the Bible's history and authority. It was faith-affirming. The entire museum is beautifully crafted and well done.
