Thanks to a listener suggestion I hopped a train for West London this morning to meet up with calligraphy and textile artist Rosalind Wyatt.  The way she weaves historic and significant text into some pretty cool ‘Oh my God, how did you get your hands on that’ pieces is something to see, but it’s the stories behind each piece that will really blow your mind.  From Winston Churchill to Jude Law, her stories will make you want to hop a plane to London to see these works of art for yourself.

Our Guest Artist: Rosalind Wyatt http://www.rosalindwyatt.com/#3 (www.rosalindwyatt.com)

Our Host Artist: Carol McQuaid http://carolmcquaid.faso.com/ (www.carolmcquaidart.com)

Now follow me to Rosalind’s garden studio and get ready for some wind and inspiring stories.  Thanks again Sandy Mair for the request, and if any of you readers know of another artist whose story you like to hear and you see on my feed that I’m headed their way, by all means send me a request.  You can follow my travels on Instagram @carolmcquaidart.

In this episode you’ll hear about:

How she came to have her magical Chiswick, West London garden studio

Doing commissions for groups like Burberry

Gabardine Canopy Tents, Virginia Wolfe and The Maker House project

The New Craftsman Gallery where Ros shows her work

Writing with a needle: her calligraphy background and how it made its way onto textiles

I love what she has to say about building skill as a foundation

The difference between working on commissions and personal projects “It’s a much slower process.  It’s less intense, it’s more organic.  You can let your selfwander a bit more.  It’s much more contemplative.”

“The thing about an artistic life is that it is free, isn’t it. So what worked in the past doesn’t necessarily work now”

Follow this link to hear the David Tycho interview we talk about http://www.twoartistswalkintoabar.com/fire-rain-journey-extremes-artist-david-tycho/ (http://www.twoartistswalkintoabar.com/fire-rain-journey-extremes-artist-david-tycho/)

Her time with a Japanese Zen master and ancient Upanishad texts”Through the inner ear of a devotee I make my way into his soul and sweep it clean”

Bhagavad Gita, Mahabharata and Shankara

Bringing creativity and creative thinkers into business “we need to break down these barriers”

We talk about the importance of traveling with a purpose

Jude Law and his involvement in her “Stitched Lives of London” project

The quote from Hamlet: “We defy augury.  There’s a special providence in the fall of a sparrow.  If it be now, ’tis not to come; if it be not to come, it will be now; if it be not now, yet it will come: the readiness is all. Since no man, of aught he leaves, knows what  is’t to  leave betimes? Let be.”  – William Shakespeare

The murmurration of starlings

Great stories from her Stitches Lives Collection; of Sir Edmund Hillary, Winston Churchill, the moving tale of mental health campaigner Johnny Benjamin and more

Pop Art Painter Bob Marangiu is our guest today.  His Picasso-meets-Murakami works will make you smile, but there’s a lot more going on than meets the eye.  Listen in as we talk at the street café just outside his studio about the role of painting in a social context, the importance of happiness, and yes, bob’s brilliant and possibly viable recipe for world peace.

Our Guest Artist:  Bob Marongiu http://www.bobmarongiu.it/en/ (www.bobmarongiu.it/en)

Our Host Artist: Carol McQuaid http://carolmcquaid.faso.com/ (www.carolmcquaidart.com)

Now follow me to Cagliari where I know you’ll enjoy his stories as much as I did. Cheers

In this episode you’ll hear about:

The role of happiness in Bob’s artwork

Filmmaker https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jovanotti (Lorenzo Jovannotti)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joan_Mir%C3%B3 (Joan Miro) in London

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hanna-Barbera (Hanna Barbera)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wile_E._Coyote_and_the_Road_Runner (Wily Coyote)

Pink Floyd Producer https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Ezrin (Bob Ezrin)

His standing date as the background painter on the famous Sardinian TV Show “http://www.videolina.it/articolo/video/2017/03/16/come_il_calcio_sui_maccheroni_2016_2017_puntata_8_parte_8-80-579360.html (Come il Calcio Sui il Macaroni)”

How his career began with a show in Costa Smeralda

Breaking through that definition of ‘real artist’ and how he thought he’d be a showman or a singer rather than a visual artist (ed note: you’re also a wonderful showman Bob)

The joy of live painting, and how it’s more important meeting and showing people that if they have a dream they can achieve it. Rather than saying “Look how good I am, how nice my paintings are” he has a bigger dream

The importance of nature and trading off New York exhibits for https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Gauguin (Gauguin) style time in nature

The upside of moving his studio back into his house

His current work, based on his vision of lush Sardinia

The consequences of messing with nature, dams and clearcutting in Sardinia

The book https://www.amazon.com/Silenced-Rivers-Ecology-Politics-Enlarged/dp/1856499022 (Silenced Rivers) by Patrick McCully

His plan to build an Arts Industry alongside every Arms Industry around the world

Today we’re in Greece, on the island of Crete, heading into Heraklion to meet up at the Miniatoura Café with artist and musician Manolia Kokoloyianni.  She grew up in both Crete and Athens, paints beautiful introspective canvases in the intense and subdued palette of this island home, and yet it’s jigs and reels she performs on her classical greek lyra with her Irish partner musician Paul Goodman. Its these awesome contradictions that keep life interesting, isn’t it?

Our Guest Artist: Manolia Kokoloyianni

Our Host Artist: Carol McQuaid www.carolmcquaidart.com

Our Bar: Miniatoura Cafe, Heraklion, Crete

Now follow me to the Miniatoura Café on the island of Crete and listen in as Manolia and I talk about the dance between music and painting, the satisfaction of having good students, and how to not mess with the gods of art.

Cheers
