View Details

One of the markers of a healthy church is that it's a group of individuals who are pursuing a life transforming walk with Jesus. But what does that look like, how do we grow, and what does it mean to do this is a healthy way? We explore a few images that help us think about what it means to pursue this kind of relationship that doesn't require striving, doesn't require letting go of the outcomes, but invites us into a new way of thinking that requires risk, obedience, and discovery.

Pastor Mark preaches on 2 Timothy 3:16. In the Evangelical Covenant Church denomination, we believe that the Bible is the only perfect rule for doctrine and conduct. Living a life of faith often involves asking a lot of questions. Sometimes these questions engage us to deeper levels of life and relationship, other times they throw us off balance or -- at worst -- create isolation and a desire to throw in the towel of faith all together. Nicodemus was a man with questions about who Jesus was and whether or not he was the Messiah; these questions led Nicodemus to confront Jesus. Ultimately, Nicodemus had to wrestle with bigger questions about what exactly he was going to follow in his life: a transactional religion or a transformational relationship.

In the book of Proverbs we find the power of true Wisdom. Proverbs is a book written by a father to help his son become truly wise. Wisdom, according to Proverbs, is skilled living that comes through fearing the Lord. The Lord helps us navigate the complexities of life through the wisdom of Proverbs. Proverbs makes it clear that life is to be lived according to the design and wisdom that God sets forth in His word. If we live by His words it will lead us to a blessed and satisfied life. This series will focus on practical, wise living.

In Matthew we see a description of Jesus’ view of the church. What you see is Jesus deep care for His church. The church is protected by Jesus. He is concerned with those who wander off. He desires for us to engage with Him in building His church and He desires His church to be a place of forgiveness. In Ephesians we see Jesus’ love for the church is analogous to the love a husband has for their wife.

We ought to have confidence that God can work miracles and answer our prayers the way we hope. Small faith can move mountains. We need to pray with confidence and believe in God’s healing touch. At the same time, God does not heal everyone even if they have great faith. We have examples of people who did not get healed (e.g., Paul; other examples in our lives).

It is true Jesus says we ought not to judge others, but He is getting at their hypocrisy. By judging others we find a way to excuse our behavior. At the same time, Jesus says when we can see ourselves clearly, as forgiven people, then we can enter into each other’s lives and in humility, we find ourselves in a position to point out areas of concern and growth in others for their good.

This is the prevalent belief in religion. Most people understand their religious standing with God is through their performance. The problem is that depending on our human goodness is the biggest barrier to authentic faith in Jesus. Jesus makes it clear that He is the means of our eternal hope.

The answer to this question is a good post-modern one, yes and no. Jesus’ command to “Follow Me” made it less rigid and therefore easier and less burdensome than the Jewish laws of the day. At the same time, Jesus calls us to take up our/His cross and follow Him. Following Jesus gives us a life full of meaning and purpose but it is not easy with the challenges of faithfully following Him in our culture.
