Our current culture is constantly pressuring us to see "the positive side of things". In theory this sounds like an encouraging advice, however, an overload of positivity can invalidate our more difficult feelings like sadness, deception or fear. When we do not have the space to express these negative emotions, we start feeling inadequate. We may even feel guilty that we are not being "positive enough". The social media tendency to only post our "happy moments" also creates a skewed reality that does not reflect the full spectrum of human emotions and life's inevitable ups and downs. We can easily start feeling like our lives and our feelings are not as positive as those of others. This is what is referred to as toxic positivity. While taking time to acknowledge our hard , negative feelings, is important for our health, it's also necessary to know how to get out of these lower emotional vibrations when we feel ready for joy again. Rita shares one of her favourite tips to help our brains develop a positive outlook on life once you feel ready for it!

ALLEGEDLY The Kardashian Curse is a phenomena by which all men who get involved with a Kardashian sister end up going crazy. They go crazy because they fall in love and then they just can't handle the intensity of the K-Family. On another note, who has lived through Bridgerton this winter 2021? How hot is the Duke? Who wishes ball seasons were still a thing? We praise the author Julia Quinn and the Netflix series producer Shonda Rhimes for putting together a story that completely elevates female emotions and sexual perspective. On the opposite end of the spectrum, we are NOT impressed with The Bachelor's racist tendencies--#BLM, get it together!! Another non-impressive situation: the College Scandal. I guess all we need to do now is photoshop a picture of ourselves playing marco-polo and send it to a corrupt coach to get into an Ivy League? The alternative is simply paying 10 M to the institution and that will also seal the deal. This is just scratching the surface of our current pop culture. Why do we care so much about actors, singers, and reality TV? Is there something to learn through this? Pop culture does establish cultural trends and shapes the way we perceive our society, our standards of beauty and our values. Let's get schmoozing about pop culture!

In this episode we discuss what self-care means to us. It starts with listening to your body and your mind when it tells you: "I am tired, please stop whatever you're doing." That message is important to recognize, especially for overachievers, workaholics or busy moms! What activities are considered self-care? Sometimes it means cooking the food you feel will be nutritious, sometimes it means going to the spa. Salima and Rita share some of their self-care routines such as how to have fabulous hair, how laser hair removal makes you feel like a goddess, and what in life is a vampire facial?!?

Nathuropathic medicine is based on applying a wholesome approach to health. This means that when you go see a naturopath, you will be analyzing the root cause of your symptoms and develop a plan to rebuild your body's health one step at a time. There won't be a quick fix solution or a magic pill to make everything disappear. You will have to make lifestyle changes and adopt new eating habits. But it will all be worth it! Naturopaths are here to remind us that our bodies know how to heal themselves, we just have to help them restore balance in all their organs and chemical and hormonal composition. In this episode, we invited Dr. Megan Maycher, a naturopath from Vancouver, BC to talk to us about her practice and share some tips on how to improve some of the common ailments in our current society such as weight control, fertility, menopause and mental health.

Every trans person has their own transition story. In this episode, our guest Kyle, shares with us how he decided to transition into a male body and how this affected his life, his personality and his emotional health and well being. Our current society is still plagued with violence against trans people, gender fluid persons, and anyone who does not abide by the traditionally accepted "man" or "woman".
Some of the topics we discuss in this episode:
-How did Kyle realize he wanted to be in a different body
-How did he come out to his family
-What are the legal struggles in changing your sex and gender
-How does this affect your romantic relationships
-How does being trans affect your career and job applications
-Does transitioning to being a trans man solve all the problems? Or is there more to deconstruct?
It's important to create safe spaces where we can openly discuss the realities experienced by many people who feel like they don't fit in the prescribed sex or gender assigned to them at birth. This is precisely what our podcast is about and we're proud to share this episode with you. Please share it with a friend and raise awareness on what trans people go through. Let's schmooze about this more often!

Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces are the zodiac signs that  represent this season and we explain how to tap into the energy of these signs to plan your activities alongside the universe's power. Cannabis became legal in Canada on October 17th 2018, for both medicinal and recreational purposes. Canada is the second country in the world, after Uruguay, to formally legalize the cultivation and consumption of the plant and its bi-products. The government of Canada has put a tremendous amount of resources in the regulation of both medicinal and recreational use of the plant. We have become a pioneering country in the transition to a safe and healthy cannabis consumption, and we are proud to set an example for the rest of the world. However, there are still many aspects of the cannabis industry that most people don’t know about and this is why at Schmooze and Booze, we decided to invite an industry expert to share her valuable knowledge and perspective on Cannabis legalization in Canada.

Many people feel like frauds - like they are not worthy of their success, no matter how many trophies, certificates, or accolades they've received. They diminish the significance of their achievements and attribute them to luck or other forces outside their control, rather than their own effort, dedication, and even intelligence. For people with impostor syndrome, their biggest fear is that people will soon discover that they are frauds and not as skilled, intelligent, or competent as the make themselves out to be. Research has linked the imposter syndrome to self-esteem issues, overachievement, and unhealthy levels of perfectionism.

Within our conversation, we want to raise questions and issues about problems we have experienced ourselves or have seen close friends go through with regards to sexual attraction and life-partnership between men and women. The feminist movements have done an amazing job at advancing the socio economic situation of women in many societies around the world. However, we are noticing that through these changes of dynamic between men and women, we have created imperfect systems that create voids in our ability to work together, to build families together and to relate to one another professionally, emotionally and sexually. Let's quote the author David Deida who precisely points out some areas for improvement in our current societies:

In my workshops and consultations I hear independent and successful women complaining that many of today's men have become "wimps." too weak and ambiguous to really trust. Sensitive and affectionate men are complaining that many of today's women have become "ballbusters," too hardened and emotionally guarded to fully embrace. Is this the ultimate expression of human sexual wisdom and evolution, or is there another step to take?

Entrepreneurship is one of the most natural phenomena in human nature. It basically means that a person has an idea for a product or holds a certain skill that can be converted into a service and this person will offer this product or service as value to other people, in exchange for something. In our society, we exchange money for value. In other societies and other times in history, it was common to exchange value for value. For example, the fisherman gives me fish and in exchange I paint his house. Whether it is an exchange of value through goods, services, or money, the human ability to be resourceful is what leads us as a species to have a natural inclination for entrepreneurship. Of course, not everyone wants to be an entrepreneur, and our economies have not been designed for everyone to be an entrepreneur. Most of the population has never been interested in imagining which service or which product they can sell to make money autonomously. At least this was true for most countries until the economic crisis of 2008. In the few years that followed this crisis, and with the increased accessibility to the Internet, smart phones, and social media, entrepreneurship suddenly gained popularity among the masses. Creating and operating your own business became a necessity for millions of people who had lost their jobs and had nowhere to go to find new employment. The human potential for entrepreneurship was re-ignited and empowered by our technology. Salima and I both decided to take on the road of entrepreneurship, and today we want to share with you our best insider’s tips and opinions about this lifestyle. Most importantly, we dig into an analysis of whether or not everyone should follow the path of entrepreneurship and if the best decision sometimes is simply to NOT do so. This is one of my favourite topics in the world, so let’s get started.

"Entrepreneurship is living a few years of your life like most people won’t, so that you can spend the rest of your life like most people can’t"

Online dating has become an integral part of our societies, especially in North America. Some of us have never even downloaded an online dating app (like myself and Salima), while others have benefited greatly from this technology and have been able to meet people they otherwise would have not had the chance to ever cross paths with. There are still many different opinions about online dating; some people question if these are truly apps for dating or only apps to be used for boody calls. Others worry that these apps reduce our social skills and ability to meet new people in natural physical environments. On the other hand, introverts may tell you that these apps have given them the opportunity to start conversations they would normally be too shy to engage in with total strangers and therefore enhance their chances at dating people outside of their immediate circle of friends. Today’s conversation will aim at exploring how online dating has changed our human interactions. We also have a surprise for you: for today’s episode we decided to give our conversation an interesting twist by inviting two men who will share their experiences and opinions on online dating. You will meet Marc, a 37 years old man living in the province of Quebec, in Canada, and Omar, a 25 years old man living in the city of Toronto. Both have had radically different experiences with dating, whether online or offline and have a lot to share with us today, let’s get to it!

This week, we want to explore the limits of our imagination and discuss the realm of the supernatural. In all cultures of the world, there are stories of sorcerers, witches, magicians, fortune tellers, magic potions, and many other ways in which humans entertain the idea of tapping into another dimension of reality. Salima and I were eager to bring up this conversation because we have different experiences with the idea of psychic abilities. I find that, since childhood, the world of fortune tellers, dream interpretation, palm reading, tarot cards, amulets, spirits, and spells are just an obvious part of life. To my surprise, I found out that for Salima, it's the opposite! This type of magic has not really played any role in her upbringing nor her adult life, so her curiosity is at top levels. To make things more interesting, we decided to invite one of Salima's friend who will perform Salima's first ever tarot card reading! Let's see what the spirits have to tell us…

Modern Families is a new series on the podcast. In this episode we will talk about modern moms.

Our modern societies have evolved to create a wonderful environment where women can enter any career they please and thrive at work. However, amidst this passionate fight for women’s equal rights and opportunities in the professional realms, many mothers are beginning to notice that there is an aspect of our societies that is still lagging behind, not reconciling completely between the ambitious desires of working moms and their parenting obligations. We are calling these women “Modern Moms” during our podcast, as we are referring to the new wave of mothers who are going through internal debates about what it means to be a working mom and how to translate this internal struggle into a social movement to create new solutions and choices for modern moms.

Our guest today, Mina Fadol, is a modern mom of two children. She lives in an urban context, in the city of Calgary, Alberta, in Canada. Her husband owns a Gourmet Pizza Restaurant and she is an Athletic Therapist. After giving birth to her first child, she decided not to go back to work for some time. After giving birth to her second child, she realized staying at home with two children was not making her happy and tried to find solutions that accommodate both her professional desires and her mother obligations. Today we dive deep into this struggle in the hope of creating a dialogue between modern moms, moms-to-be, women who are hesitant to have children because they do not want to sacrifice their career, and very importantly, the rest of the society and its expectations of modern moms. Can we find a middle ground?

Quote of the week:

“We expect women to work like they don’t have children and raise children as if they don’t work.”

The oldest traces of grape wine production have been found in Europe, somewhere between what is today Armenia and Georgia, dating as far back as 4000 BC. Ever since, wine has been a loyal friend to many artists, poets, travelers, emperors, and even religious leaders. It has become a major part of many culture’s identities around the world and every year, millions of tourists travel from one country to another, to discover the treasures each wine region has to offer. Exploring the world of wine includes learning about geography, history, geology, agriculture, and much more. It is no wonder that in the Greek mythology it is considered “the nectar of the Gods”. Salima and I always enjoy savoring a glass of wine when we visit each other and some of our fondest memories of time spent together involve a glass or two. Today, we dedicate the next hour to learning more about how to appreciate wine and its significance in our world.

“A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world” -**Louis Pasteur

Today we interview Italian Sommelier Maria Luisa Costa.**Maria Luisa Costa was born in Florence, Italy, and grew up surrounded by the lively culture of delicious Italian food and wine. She comes from a long family tradition of restaurant ownership and wine connoisseurs. It’s not surprising that she studied to become a professional sommelier and has several years of experience working in the wine and dine industry in Europe, Latin America and recently, Canada. She has gracefully accepted to join our episode to share her perspective and knowledge of the wine and spirits industry.
