Draft topic: sports heartbreaks
Ann calms Shaun (and the rest of Smashville) down about the Predators making it to the playoffs, the duo analyzes the 3-game losing streak, Ann explains how "The Magic Number" works, Producer Connor is praised for music selection, Shaun gets emotional about defense and charity, and the duo faces off on the Main Event 3-on-3 Draft subject of...headwear.

Shaun, Ann, and Alex (live from Miami) discuss the Nashville Predators point streak and the gang learns the proper way to pronounce Jason Zucker. (you'll never guess what it rhymes with!) Ann discusses her invisible backpack of hockey grudges, Alex showers us with the hottest of takes, and the rest of the season is discussed at length. Special Main Event 3-on-3-on-3 Draft Topic: Superpowers

The Preds got exposed by the Golden Knights. Will it happen again? Shaun and Alex discuss that and line combinations, whether the Preds should buy or sell, and more. 3 on 3 draft: $1000 bills
The Preds sandwiched a nice road win at Dallas with two awful home losses to Calgary and Anaheim. Why the big stinkers at home? Also, some insight into why Juuse Saros has been struggling and a discussion on Tyson Barrie. 3 on 3 Draft: bar fight moves
The Preds shutout the Blackhaws (who are awful) all while Will Levis sits behind the comfort of plexiglass. The coaches love Dante Fabbro, so why have they been healthy scratching him? Plus, plenty of praise for Gustav Nyquist. 3 on 3 Draft: embarrassing high school obsessions
Michael McCarron gets kicked out of the game, Cody Glass and Philip Tomasino are "just ok", and the defense is in a weird place. 3 on 3 Draft: Holiday Traditions!
The Preds are climing the NHL standings and Juuse Saros is a huge reason why. Shaun and Alex discuss the team's red-hot goaltender, plus their increase in fighting/penalties. 3 on 3 draft: R-rated movies we should not have been allowed to watch as a kid
Juuse Saros carriers the Preds to a 2-1 win in Buffalo! Plus, Tyson Barrie requests a trade and Michael McCarron talks about his year last year. 3 on 3 Draft: holiday headaches

How surprised are we at this 3-4 start? A recap of wins over the Rangers & Sharks, plus disappointment over the effort in the Canucks loss. Barry Trotz likes to claim players on waivers... why? "3 on 3 Draft" = Smells
The Nashville Predators are 1-3... how concerned should we be? Then, former Preds defenseman Anthony Bitetto joins the show to talk about his decision to retire and some of his favorite Smashville moments. Also, what's with these Dante Fabbro rumors? 3 on 3 Draft: alien movies
The Preds lose their first game in Tampa, but... still look fun? Tons of interesting things to break down, including a change on the blueline, a new PP strategy, and all the Tommy Novak vibes. 3 on 3 Draft: Walgreens riot weapons!

After the break, Boyd recaps the season ending press conference featuring David Poile, Barry Trotz and John Hynes.Boyd can be found on Twitter at @boyd_1212
It's been a whirlwind weekend for the Preds. First up, we learn David Poile is retiring as GM and Barry Trotz is taking over come July. Will the team shine under Trotz or will it continue to be mediocre? The NHL Trade Deadline passed and the Preds were the mix, the big news being the blockbuster trade with Tampa for Tanner Jeannot. Thanks for listening! If you enjoy the show, be sure to follow us on Twitter and subscribe to us on YouTube! Until next time, we'll see you on the ice!
On this episode Boyd recaps one of the wildest weekends in Nashville Predators history including a retirement, a former coach coming home and two forwards traded to contenders for all the draft picks. Then Boyd looks ahead to the trade deadline for the Predators and around the league.Find Boyd on Twitter at @boyd_1212
Bruce Boudreau was fired from the Canucks in a less-than-stellar fashion from the Canucks on Monday after being behind the bench for only 14 months. The Canucks loss is another team's gain. The Preds would do good to take a look at the bench boss players and fans love and compare him against Hynes and his current system. The Preds are on the outside looking in and despite a "competitive rebuild" and "embracing the youth movement", Hynes has done little to help the team become the team we know they can be. Do the Preds take a hard look at bringing in Bruce in the off-season or do we continue to flounder in the middle as we have done for years now?
On this episode, Boyd looks at the Nashville Predators' upcoming schedule to get into playoff position at the trade deadline. Then he breaks down what the trade deadline could look like, interprets some GM speak, and looks at the reasons for re-signing Cole Smith. After the break, Boyd talks about the potential of incoming reinforcements from Europe in the form of two recent first round picks and goes through storylines from around the NHL.Boyd can be found on Twitter at @boyd_1212 and his written work at www.penaltyboxradio.com
We are nearing the halfway point of the season. The Preds seem to be on a yo-yo as they keep moving back and forth away from a wildcard spot in the playoffs. Meanwhile, the All-Star game is approaching, and Juuse Saros will be representing the Preds. Also, Eeli Tolvanen seems to be thriving with the Kraken. Excuse us while we go on a rant about the mishandling of Tolvanen in the Preds system. Thanks for listening! If you enjoy the show, be sure to follow us on Twitter and subscribe to us on YouTube! Until next time, we'll see you on the ice!
On this episode, Boyd recaps the close of 2022 for the Nashville Predators and identifies some positives offensively with a challenging stretch ahead to get back into the playoff race. Then he covers the recent reports of Predators GM David Poile making Mattias Ekholm available for trade and whether that is actually the direction the team will go. After the break, Boyd discusses intentions for the upcoming year on The Predator Way, Penalty Box Radio and Renegades of Puck.Don't forget to rate and subscribe to Penalty Box Radio!
The Preds played a shorter schedule thanks to Bridgestone arena being flooded by a major downtown water leak. Despite less games, we finally seem to be seeing some consistently. Defense lines are good, goalkeeping is good, and scoring is being spread out amongst all the forward lines, and we talk about the possibility of seeing Eeli Tolvanen (RIP) and Dante Fabbro being trade targets. Thanks for listening! If you enjoy the show, be sure to follow us on Twitter and subscribe to us on YouTube! Until next time, we'll see you on the ice!
In this episode, Boyd recaps the recent mixed results for the Nashville Predators and how they can build on the back to back home wins. In the second segment, Boyd is joined by Aaron Sims, radio play by play announcer for the AHL Milwaukee Admirals, to get his perspective on the Predators' affiliate's hot start and if this might be the most talented Admirals roster he's seen.
We are five more games into the season. The Preds started a five-game road trip across western Canada and the Pacific Northwest. With an always strong Central Division, the Preds need to figure out their identity. We've seen line blenders almost every game and well-known players such as Tolvanen, Carrier, Glass, and Fabbro getting scratched. They embody the "Smashville" moniker, but as Edmonton proved the other night, skill and speed are what make championship teams these days. Can the Preds figure out their identity before it's too late and find themselves on the golf course in April?Kyle – @kylehancockDaniel – @seedandrumMatt – @MattBain31
On this episode, Boyd digs into the subpar results for the Nashville Predators in the first nine game of the '22-23 season including the concerning statistics and who bears the most responsibility. Then he looks for solutions including if a bigger move may be the answer. In the final segment, Boyd looks ahead to the west coast road trip and an opportunity to get back on track.
The NHL 22-23 season has begun for the Predators. We are seven games and we only have two wins...but on a different continent. Fans are already calling for Hynes to be replaced and in some cases even GMDP himself. Is this an overreaction to a slow start or do we continue to see this happen during the season? We also discuss the off-season signings by the Preds, the new reverse retro jerseys, the Coyotes playing at ASU this season and much more. You can find the show on Twitter @MusicCityGold and the guys at:Kyle – @kylehancockDaniel – @seedandrumMatt – @MattBain31

Then, he looks ahead to free agency and reviews a number of his preferred options as well as quick hits on listener-provided suggestions.

Round One of the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs has begun! Our brackets are set and now all we can do is cross our fingers and hope we picked the overall winner. We go through the games as of Wednesday evening and discuss the most important thing on the agenda, the Preds getting whooped by the Avs. If we are bounced early, what does this mean for Forsberg, Hynes, and GMDP in the off-season?
Spoiler: Despite a great performance by Ingram, the Preds will go home to a 0-2 deficit and will hope to win one at home to continue the series.

Justin welcomes guest co-host Abigail Martin to talk Preds and David Dwork talks Florida Panthers.
We are into the final month of hockey and the Preds are poised to either make it or break it. A win over Ottawa should be a given and give them some help, but Dallas is hanging in there and it will come down to the wire.
Roman Josi should be the default Norris candidate at this point. He's having a recording breaking season not only team-wise but league-wise as well. Does he get it or does the hockey world bestow it upon Cale Makar, who is second to Josi in every way this season?

It's been a while since we've been able to get together and talk some hockey. Now that our commitments are out of the way, we're back to talk the Preds and some of the trades which have happened around the league since our last episode.
Preds are poised for a spot in the playoffs and we still don't see any sign of Forsberg either being signed or traded away. What is GMDP going to do? We certainly don't know?! Either way, it needs to get done.

Justin and Glynne talk all things Predators and welcome Michael Gallagher of the Nashville Post. They then continue a discussion on hockey culture and how we can all make the sport more inviting.
The All-Star Game rosters, captains, and last men in have been selected there have been some...interesting omissions...specifically big-name players such as Josi, Crosby, Marchand, and others. Should the NHL go back to the East vs West format and stop sending a player from each team?
How about those Oilers as well? Started off strong and now well, they are free falling and nobody seems to know how to fix them. We also discuss the Calder race, is Saros the MVP for the Preds and continue to beat the proverbial dead horse of whether or not Forsberg will re-sign with the Preds.

Justin and Glynne talk Preds and then welcome Luke Schenkel of Ravenwood High School to talk high school hockey in Nashville. Then, Scott Wrenn of the Nashville Fire Department hockey team joined the program to talk about the upcoming charity game benefitting Metro Animal Care and Control.
Forsberg is back from injury and is making up for lost time, scoring four goals Tuesday night against the Blue Jackets. What does this to do complicate his impending contract negotiations? Will GMDP be forced to sign him to a deal he doesn't want to give or does he risk letting Forsberg test the free agency waters and go somewhere else?
Also, the Preds release their navy Stadium Series jerseys to lackluster fanfare. It's an ugly jersey, but all Stadium Series jerseys have also been huge misses when compared to their Winter Classic counterparts. It's one of the few things Preds fans can agree on this season.

All eyes have been on the Chicago Blackhawks as news of a sexual assault coverup during 2010 Stanley Cup playoffs has rocked the league. Questions are being asked of the Blackhawks, the NHLPA, and the NHL itself as to how far this coverup went and what the response will be to make sure this doesn't happen again.
Also the Preds are a .500 hockey team! Josi, Forsberg, Duchene, and Johansen have stepped up in big ways and Tanner Jeannot is making himself a permanent fixture in Smashville. Also did you hear the news? Rinne is getting his number retired!

The new season is upon us and the Preds appear well…mediocre at best. Time will tell how much GMDP, Hynes, and ownership really buy into the idea of the long touted "Youth Movement". Is it for show or will the Preds actually commit to it for the season?

A lot has happened since the last time we recorded. Pekka retired, Arvy and Ellis have been traded, and they lost Jarnkrok to Seattle. It's a lot to talk about, but we get it done while also speculating on the future of the Preds now that they seem to be fully embracing the youth movement.

The Preds have been bounced from the playoffs despite giving the Hurricanes a run for the money to the surprise of everyone. Making the playoffs after the season they had was seen as a success, but now GMDP has some tough questions to answer. Oh, and the expansion draft is coming up as well. Now is the time to see if he can work some magic for next season while maintaining the youth movement we saw this season.

Abigail Martin & Boyd Farrish joined Justin Bradford and Glynne Blackwell to discuss the open of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs have begun! Well, for everyone EXCEPT the North division. It's also bracket time for us here at MCG. The annual money puck bet is back and after looking at the brackets, it appears to be Matt and Daniel versus Kyle.
We go over the games, make our picks, and talk about the tire fire of a first game against Carolina. Here's hoping they make better lineup decisions and play better overall against the Canes. Otherwise, this is going to a short run for the Preds.

Justin and Glynne talk Preds and then welcome Mark Scheig of The Hockey Writer to talk Blue Jackets and junior hockey. Then Abby Labar of Bally Sports South discusses the Hurricanes. Finally, Justin and Glynne give their thoughts on the Tom Wilson non-suspension.
Everyone loves a bit of magic, especially magic numbers. The Preds look to bring their magic number down from seven to zero so they can clinch a spot in the playoffs. Should they make it, and by all accounts they will, they have to get past a first-round opponent of the Lightning, Panthers, or Hurricanes.
Hopefully, with Saros and a bit of luck on their side, the Preds will withstand the challenge and make a deep run. After all, if the Blues can do it, why not the Preds? All you have to do is get in and then all bets are off.

Justin and Glynne discuss the win over the Blackhawks, Juuse Saros' impressive stats, welcome Milwaukee Admirals head coach Karl Taylor and talk the week ahead with James Neveau of NBC Chicago and the Madhouse Chicago Hockey Podcast.
The Preds have defied the odds. In just a few short weeks, they are now looking to claim the final playoff spot in the Central Division and be playoff contenders. For this to happen, they have to hold off the Stars and Blackhawks who are looking for that final spot as well. The questions now become will they make it, who will they play, and how far do they go?
Should they fail to place or make an early exit, eyes will turn to the 2021 NHL Expansion Draft in Seattle and GMDP will have to figure out who he wants to protect and the team itself will have another offseason of wondering what could have been.

Poile, you got to let me know, will I stay or will I go? If you say that I am yours, I'll be a Pred until the end of time. So you got to let me know, will I stay or will I go?
That's the song the Preds were singing just two weeks ago when the season seemed to a wash. Suddenly though, the Preds find themselves on six-game win streak after beating Dallas on Tuesday night.
The question now becomes what does Poile do? Does he stand still and try to make the playoffs with the team as it, risking a first round exit against possible Tampa or Carolina or does he trim the fat and focus on the youth movement he teased us about as the season began?

Justin and Glynne celebrate International Women's Day by welcoming Katherin Ellis, who covers the Boston University Terriers hockey team and Natalie Noury, who covers the University of New Hampshire hockey team. Ellis talks Preds prospect David Farrance and her journey in sports while Noury discusses Preds prospect Luke Reid and how she adapted her sports journalism skills during the pandemic.
Almost halfway through the season, the Preds will need a miracle to make the playoffs. Trade rumors abound Forsberg despite assurances from David Poile the franchise forward is not going to be traded. It's time for work to be done before the trade deadline though, as the Poile needs to accept this team is mediocre at best.
With injuries mounting, the youth movement is getting a chance to shine. The one good thing this season has finally brought us is Eeli Tolvanen. The Finnish wonder is making his worth known on the power play and showing he was worth the wait.

Justin and Glynne discuss the current state of the Nashville Predators. Then, they welcome top Preds prospect Philip Tomasino, who's currently with the Chicago Wolves in the AHL. Then, PBR Lead Analytics Reporter George Matarangas joined the program for his take on the team so far this season. Lastly, let's talk some trade rumors and addressing hockey media takes.
The Preds have spiraled out of control since our last episode. While getting a win against the Blue Jackets Saturday night, the Preds have hardly been exciting on the ice, going 3-5-0 in their last eight games. The offense has dried up and left the front office, the players, the coach, and the fans with a lot of soul searching to do.
Should the Preds be sellers at the deadline? If so, who do we trade to start the rebuild process and is John Hynes the right coach for this team? Also, Matt gives his reasons why Sidney Crosby is NOT in the top five NHL players of all time.

Justin Bradford spoke with University of Alabama in Huntsville defenseman Dayne Finnson about his overtime goal and the season so far. Plus, hear from head coach Lance West ahead of this week's matchup.
Justin and Glynne discuss the recent lapses by the Nashville Predators. Then, they look ahead to the back-to-back against Florida with Katie Gaus of Fox Sports Florida. Then, Nathan Zonarich of Brentwood High School talks about high school hockey and the upcoming Preds Cup state championship. Lastly, Colby Collier of MD Media talks The Wish Cup, a charity hockey tournament benefitting Make A Wish Middle Tennessee.
This is a fast and furious season and every point matters. After taking one on the chin against Carolina, the Preds have been on a roller coaster ride starting with a penalty kill breakdown against Dallas, steadying themselves against Chicago and finally being manhandled by Tampa.
What do the Preds need to do the correct the ship before the season is lost and outside of Forsberg and Arvy, where are we going to find the offense we know this team has?

Then, Will Morrison of Montgomery Bell Academy came on the program to talk high school hockey playoffs.
The 2021 NHL season has begun! It's a compressed 56 game season and every game is a playoff game. The divisions are different, there are new rules and protocols and a constantly rotating Taxi Squad. We'll take as long as the game we love can be played.
We have new faces in the Preds offense and defense this season as Poile pulled the trigger and sent players packing after last season. How does the team fare and where do they place in this mashed up Central Division? As long as they place 4th or better they'll make the playoffs and then anything can happen.

This was a special episode to do. When we first started doing the podcast a few years ago, a guest I always wanted to interview was Brandon Montour. I went to the same high-school as Montour and he even cheated on my American History papers.

A big thanks goes out to you Montour. Thanks for being a pal & thanks for coming on the pod. (I still don't believe you that you haven't listened to the new T-Swift album) - Matt

Hockey is back(?), which means that you have to listen to us talk about it. I suppose we must take the good with the bad. The NHL season is set to pick up for the playoffs in just a few short weeks, and the Nashville Predators will look to jump start a previously disappointing season.
Their path is not free from obstacles, though, as a new and improved Arizona Coyotes team looks to shut down the Predators with some all-star names of their own. We discuss both teams underlying characteristics, what areas of the ice work in their favor, and which players will be the "X factor."
With the benefit of hindsight, we also take a look into the differences between Peter Laviolette's Nashville Predators and those of John Hynes. The new coach brings a system that should work to Nashville's strengths, but had difficulty gaining momentum during the regular season.
As a bonus, Formula 1 is covered by two experts on the subject: us. For those looking to fill the sports void until hockey resumes, you could do much worse than F1 this season.
Finally, we answer some great listener questions before signing off until next time. As always, we welcome your feedback and questions on Twitter (@Datarangas, @WadeM117, or @BetweenTheFangs). Thanks for listening!

The Nashville Predators: not as advertised. Despite the offseason addition of Matt Duchene, a Norris-conversation season from Roman Josi, and very high expectations, the Predators are on the outside of the playoff window and looking in. With a deadline looming, what is the team to do? Buy, sell, or stay put?
With Viktor Arvidsson and Ryan Ellis having both dealt with multi-week injuries this season, should both remain in the lineup? If Nashville really looks to be missing the playoffs, I might consider shutting them down and giving some time to heal.
John Hynes is, in many measurable ways, an improvement for this offense. However, some of his lineup decisions, line combinations, and time on ice adjustments are hindering the performance of the team. What gives?
Finally, we get to some very fine listener questions about Viktor Arvidsson, Ryan Johansen, Jarred Tinordi, and (uh) tofu.
Questions and positive feedback are always welcome and can be directed to me on Twitter (@WadeM117). Negative comments can go right to George's DMs (@GeorgeM1019). Thanks for listening!

Another week, another episode of Pucks Out Podcast is here! Bobby and Brandon introduce a new sponsor of the show, talk recent Preds success, suspensions in the NHL, and the Astros cheating scandal. Follow the boys on twitter and Instagram @PucksOutPod
Following a three-game win streak, the first one since October, the Nashville Predators were unsuccessful in making it four in a row, falling to the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1 Tuesday night.
From the start, Nashville was outplayed by Carolina. The Predators were just slower overall, lost puck battles, didn't forecheck the way they were capable of and then allowed the Hurricanes to have multiple high danger opportunities against goaltender Juuse Saros.
Nashville has two days off before heading to Chicago for a Friday night game and then back home in Nashville against Columbus Saturday night. Every point matters and the team still has games in hand, but consistency is continuing to be difficult to come by. Getting 3 of 4 points in the next two games would certainly help.

From the north comes another episode of the Coast to Coast podcast! Matt Best, Christian Marin & Nick Andrade break down All Star Weekend and what they'd do differently. They also touched on the things they liked & things they didn't like (SPOILER: they didn't like a lot).
The guys also reminisce about the time they went to a Raptors game together and Nick scared the heck out of an eight year old. Matt's no cup of tea at sporting events either - especially if it includes a bus ride.
Playing in a fantasy hockey league? The trio go over some names who you should scoop up and they also chat strategy to close out your season.
Finally, after coming up with some predictions for the rest of the NHL season, Matt and Christian come up with a bet. It involves eggs, money & Nick.
In their first game after the bye week and all star break, the Nashville Predators fell to the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-2. The game featured two teams who recently underwent coaching changes. Both teams entered the game out of playoff position, so points are of the utmost importance. After a back and forth first period that saw Mikael Granlund quickly respond to a William Nylander goal, the second period saw the Maple Leafs close it out with a 4-1 lead. Nashville showed a little more energy in the third period and fed off a Viktor Arvidsson goal, but it wasn't enough.
Both Roman Josi and John Hynes were please with their first period, but both also noted that the second period is where things completely went wrong.
For a team that is in desperate need of points, this was obviously not the way to begin the push to the playoffs following the bye week and All Star Break. Nashville also has one of the most difficult schedules in the league to close out the season based on opponent win percentages. Up next, the Washington Capitals. Another opportunity for this team to prove they have some fight in the first of a back-to-back.
Justin Bradford caught up with Nashville Predators forward and talked everything NOT hockey with him. From favorite vacation spots to the foods he loves and movies he's recently seen.
Episode 1 is finally here! On the premier episode Bobby and Brandon give some insight into the origins of the Pucks Out Podcast, cover the recent news in the NHL, discuss the All-star game and break, and start a 4 part discussion centered around a galaxy far, far away....
On this week's episode of Coast to Coast: Game Misconduct, Matt Best is joined by Nick Andrade to catch up on what's been happening in the world of pop culture.
Christian Marin couldn't make it for this one (but he'll be back for next weeks!) so Nick and Matt had the chance to geek out about Star Wars for a bit. The duo chat about The Rise of Skywalker and the Mandalorian; loving one more than the other.
With the release of Mac Miller and Eminem's latest albums, Matt & Nick put on their music caps and try to break down each new record.
Should have just called this the "critic" episode because the pair also review the Oscar nominees for Best Picture & discover a thing or two about each person's favourite movie genre.
Then to top things off, Nick demanded we talk about his twin - Conor McGregor - and the (quick) fight that recently happened.
If there's something YOU want to hear on Game Misconduct, send us a tweet! @BESTofMATT / @nickandrade89
Dallas memories, coaching changes, wizardry and Disney magic. All this and more on this episode of Southern Hostility.

Then, Jack is joined by Eamon Smith, as they discuss Flyers and the Predators. Like George's segment, the two discuss a topic outside of hockey: the Tennessee Titans and their playoff run.
In between segments, Jack discusses the standings, various surprises around the league, and gives his predictions for the rest of the season. He likes to bounce around with no commitment to a certain issue.

Lighthouse Planning post game report with Justin Bradford:
New Nashville Predators head coach arrived in Nashville this morning and was behind the bench tonight for the Predators' 6-2 loss to the Boston Bruins. While the loss was frustrating for all around, it served as an evaluation process and learning experience for the team. The Predators will have their first practice Wednesday with Hynes at the helm and then time will tell on how this team will make its push to the playoffs.
Captain Roman Josi wasn't pleased with the first period, but saw some flashes in the team's play. He knows there are a multitude of things the team can improve on and is looking forward to working with the new coach.
Forward Matt Duchene, as he normally does, offered a really good breakdown of the game and the future. He's still confident in this team and its abilities.
New head coach John Hynes said he learned a lot tonight about the team and is looking forward to implementing and fixing a few things. When it comes to what he saw that needs improvement, Hynes noted that there are small things in the defensive zone to fix and that he wants the offensive attack to be more relentless.
The Predators hit the road, like the will for most of the month, and will take on the Blackhawks in Chicago on Thursday. After getting a practice in and some tweaks to their play worked on, we will start to see more of what John Hynes wants to implement with his system.
The Nashville Predators begin a new age in franchise history as they take on the Boston Bruins tonight in Smashville. Sam previews the action and discusses Peter Laviolette and Kevin McCarthy being fired from the coaching staff.

Starting a west coast back to back, Mattias Ekholm and the Nashville Predators look to turn it around on a Hollywood Night against Drew Doughty and the Los Angles Kings. Sam previews the match up at the Staples Center!
Good news! Well, good news for people who like vague, rambling, poorly-timed inside jokes and large animals making noise disguised as a hockey analytics podcast. Between the Fangs is back!
In this episode, recorded slightly before Christmas, George and I discuss the Predators lack of goodness. Is it really down to coaching? What needs to change? Who needs to change?
Matt Duchene has received a bit of criticism for his so-called quiet season after a blistering start in Nashville. Does he have more to give?
Finally, we answer a few listener questions involving trade targets.
As always, feel free to get in touch with me on Twitter (@WadeM117) for positive feedback and questions, and George (@GeorgeM1019) for all not-positive feedback. Thanks for listening!
Justin, Glynne and Danielle spend the entire show debriefing the Winter Classic. They discuss the game itself, the experience from the stands, pressbox and watching on television, the good and the bad of the stadium experience, how the Predators could host an outdoor game and changes that could be made for the team to improve.
The Nashville Predators and Dallas Stars were the main NHL event on New Year's Day, competing in the 2020 Winter Classic. The first period alone featured a little bit of everything, including a Ryan Ellis injury following a Corey Perry elbow to the head, which got him ejected, a penalty shot, power play goals and more. Though Nashville had a two-goal lead, and even a one-goal lead heading into the third period, the Predators fell 4-2 in their first-ever Winter Classic.
Forward Matt Duchene was pleased with the effort in the first period in response to the Ellis injury, but felt the team backed off, allowing Dallas into the game. Here's his breakdown of the game.
Mattias Ekholm felt that it was a playoff type game with the physicality and intensity of the game.
Ekholm was also open in sharing his thoughts on the Corey Perry hit on Ryan Ellis. The hit forced Ellis out of the game, and resulted in an ejection for Perry.
Goaltender Pekka Rinne thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere of the game and felt the team was prepared, had time to relax and not feel rushed before the game...noting that it hurts even more because the game was so special.
Nashville now has two days off before they continue their road trip with back to back games against Los Angeles and Anaheim before coming back home to face Boston.
Justin Bradford spoke with Nashville Predators forward Mikael Granlund after practice on New Year's Eve. He's excited to be here with his family for the experience. It will be his fourth time playing outdoors.
Justin Bradford spoke with Rocco Grimaldi following practice at the Cotton Bowl on New Year's Eve.
NHL players are born for match ups like this. Sam previews the 2020 NHL Winter Classic between the Nashville Predators and Dallas Stars from the Cotton Bowl Stadium.
In the final home game of 2019, the Nashville Predators were not up to task in the first game of a back-to-back home-and-home against the Pittsburgh Penguins, falling 5-2. The Penguins went up early, but Nashville responded with Craig Smith notching his sixth of the year. Pittsburgh then took charge of the game to close out the first period with goals from Alex Galchenyuk and Teddy Blueger.
It didn't get much better for the Predators in the second period as they went down 5-1, with Penguins goals from Bryan Rust and Juuso Riikola. There were a few missed opportunities from Nashville in the game, including a shorthanded opportunity from Ryan Johansen that went off the post among others.
About midway through the third, tempers flared, and Mattias Ekholm was sent to the locker room early. With Matt Irwin sitting in the box for a penalty of his own, the Predators were down to three able defenseman with Dan Hamhuis suffering an upper body injury in the first period. Calle Jarnkrok stepped in on the blue line for some of the third. It should be noted that forward Colton Sissons also left the game with a lower body injury in the first period. Viktor Arvidsson added a goal immediately following the fracas, bringing the game to a little more respectable difference.
Post game report includes Roman Josi and Viktor Arvidsson.
Filip Forsberg and the Predators look to take it all in a back to back against Evgeni Malkin and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Sam gets you set for both matchups!

We're in the middle of December and the Preds are struggling. Almost in last place in their division and outside of the playoffs looking in, people are starting to push towards a change in the coaching staff if the team's luck doesn't turn around.
We've already seen the Devils and Sharks release their coaches due to lackluster performances. It begs the question how much more patience does GMDP have left with his coach before a change is made?

After a 3-0 loss to the Panthers on Saturday, the Predators come back home to Smashville and welcome Nikita Kucherov and the Tampa Bay Lightning to town. Sam Fleming previews tonight's match up and talks about the potential return of #8 to the line-up.
If you had 6 million dollars, what would you do with it? You could buy a house, a car, or whatever your heart desires. For Kyle Turris and the Preds though, the question has yet to be answered as Turris has now been scratched for seven straight games. David Poile is behind Coach Laviolette on his decision, leaving us all wondering if this is the best use of the Preds own Six Million Dollar Man. Only time will tell what happens.
Also, we touch briefly on the Mike Babcock story, the response from Toronto after he was let go, and the domino effect his firing has created for other teams and around the NHL as a whole.

The Nashville Predators extended their losing streak to six games following a 6-3 loss to the Vancouver Canucks Thursday night. Vancouver scored five of their goals on the power play and added a shorthanded empty net goal near the end of regulation. Nashville scored once on the power play with a goal from Calle Jarnkrok, along with even strength goals from Ryan Johansen and Matt Duchene.
It was a game of undisciplined play as the Predators took six penalties and were punished five times by the Vancouver power play. The Canucks also took six trips to the penalty box, but Nashville only made them pay once.
In the game, the Predators looked dominant at five on five, but special teams made them pay. Nashville even controlled much of the third period, but could only muster one goal.

Justin and Glynne discuss all things Preds with an intense focus on player exit interviews, the power play, what changes should be made but won't, a rant on getting Pekka Rinne his Stanley Cup, potential trade situations that may take place and of course, dumb things said on Preds Facebook.
Enjoy, and we'll wake you up before October!
Cameron and Justin play the word association game discuss the Preds and the playoffs, sweeps in the East and nerd out over the upcoming premiere of Avengers End Game.
The First Round will end this week. Did/will your team make it the Second Round? We’ve seen a Stanley Cup playoffs for the history books as both #1 seeds in the East/West get bounced and sweeps coming in left and right. Is it too late to put money down in Vegas? We sit down and go over the series so far, look at some stats, torch our brackets, and discuss the Preds/Stars series in a little more detail. Spoilers: The Preds got bounced.

Justin Bradford was joined by PBR intern Spider Jack filling in for Glynne during the show. They recapped Game 3, looked at the analytics of it and dealt with a very tired Bradford.
Then, they discussed the rest of the field. The sweeps of the Lightning and Penguins, the Ovechkin/Svechnikov fight and more.
Next, PBR correspondent John Jensen joined them to talk all things Milwaukee Admirals as they prepare for their Calder Cup Playoff series against Iowa.
Lastly, it was Twitter Q&A talking injuries, line up, Grimaldi naming his sticks and more.
The First Round of the Stanley Cup playoffs is upon us! What a mess it has been. The Lightning, best team of the season and one of the best teams ever has taken a punch in the nose from the Blue Jackets and can't stop the bleeding. Meanwhile, the Penguins are hanging on for dear life against the Islanders, while over in the West, the Blues and Jets slug it out while the Sharks and Knights chirp each other and bring the haymakers.
Kyle, Daniel, and Matt go over each series, give their thoughts, review a little bit of stats, and talk about what they want to see not only from all these series, especially the Preds/Stars series. Dallas took first blood, but can the Preds survive. If they do, can they make it past Round Two? We'll find out!

Justin Bradford spoke with Nashville Predators defenseman Dante Fabbro ahead of Game 3 in Dallas. Fabbro spoke on the experience in the NHL so far, learning from Dan Hamhuis and experience a home playoff game in Nashville.
They have officially been branded as Spider-Jack and Intern Danielle, and they are talking nothing but Predators hockey! Colton Sissons, impact of the defensemen, and how they will do in the playoffs.
Interning at the studio, debuting on the radio with Justin and Glynne, and school has prevented them from doing more podcast work, but they are back and ready with all the important stats!
Recorded with five games left in the season, what was said came to pass. Enjoy Slapshot 615: the 4th edition!
Justin Bradford was joined by PBR analytics reporters Michael Wade and George Matarangas for their Preds vs Stars playoff preview show. They break down all things stats-wise for the series and make their picks.
Plus, Sean Shapiro of The Athletic joined us while he was boarding his flight to Nashville to talk Dallas Stars.
Due to an occupied recording booth, George and I took advantage of the lovely weather and recorded outdoors for our Poolside Playoff Preview Podcast 2019. In this episode, we break down each of the eight playoff matchups, give our predictions, and discuss who should win it all. In extra detail, we go through our expectations for Nashville’s matchup against the Dallas Stars. What kind of challenges with Dallas offer Nashville, especially behind the bench? We discuss.
George also shares the story of his daring fire rescue, for which he was charged $20.
Apologies in advance for any breaks in the audio; it was not uncommon that we paused to let an airplane pass overhead.
As always, feel free to reach out to George (@GeorgeM1019) or Michael (@WadeM117) on Twitter or leave a comment below!
On this episode of Breakaway Beauties, Abby, Abigail and Camryn discuss what the Stanley Cup Playoffs are going to play out like and how the Preds finished off the regular season. Plus, lots of goalie love.
The regular season is done and the Preds are Central Division champs. While this is fine and all, none of it matters now that the playoffs are here! We spend a few a minutes talking about Phil Housley and Coach Q, go over our preseason predictions, and then jump straight into our brackets for the playoffs. So grab your bracket and coffee because remember, you'll sleep when the playoffs are over.

Justin and Glynne kick it off recapping Nashville's win over Buffalo and welcoming intern Spider-Jack to run down some interesting stats on the Preds.
Then, Chris Peters of ESPN joined us to talk all things college hockey and prospects. His favorites in the Frozen Four, players to watch, potential college free agents to lookout for, Dante Fabbro, draft prospects and more are discussed.
Brant Feldman of AGM Sports, who has represented multiple Olympians, then joined us to talk about the continued equality battle for USA women's hockey along with the current situation regarding professional women's hockey with the CWHL/NWHL.
Lastly, we close it up with another dumb thing found on Preds Facebook, if the Preds were a fruit, what would they be, line combos in the playoffs and more!
The Nashville Predators fell 5-2 to the Columbus Blue Jackets Saturday night.
Coming off an impressive 3-1 win in Pittsburgh Friday night, the Predators were looking to continue the upward trend, but that took a turn downhill just 50 seconds into the game when Cam Atkinson gave the Blue Jackets the quick 1-0 lead. 8 minutes later, Viktor Arvidsson scored his 33 of the season, tying Filip Forsberg and Jason Arnott for most goals scored in one season by a Nashville Predator.
The Blue Jackets scored twice more in the first period, and never looked back.
Saturday night was also the debut of Predators defenseman Dante Fabbro. Fabbro, who recently signed his entry level contract, was paired with Dan Hamhuis for the game. He logged 16 minutes, 12 seconds on the ice and registered 3 shots on goal as well as 3 blocked shots. Aside from one off-balance mistake which led to a Boone Jenner goal, his debut was a fairly positive one.
Next up, Nashville travels to Buffalo for Tuesday night's game against the Sabres, then they'll be back home for the final two games of the regular season.
In this episode of the Road to Nashville, Michael Gallagher and Cutler Klein are joined by Andrew Berkshire of Sportsnet and the Winnipeg Free Press.
The guys break down the Predators' moves at the trade deadline, discuss the futures of Dante Fabbro and Eeli Tolvanen, and discuss how a potential Nashville/Winnipeg series might shake out in the playoffs.
Be sure to follow us on Twitter: @mpatrickg5, @CutlerKlein, @AndrewBerkshire, @PenaltyBoxRadio
Justin and Glynne spend the first two segments looking at where the Predators stand, what's been frustrating (and why that's okay), plus a look at Dante Fabbro and Rem Pitlick, two recent additions to the team.
Next, Mark Scheig joined them to talk all things Columbus Blue Jackets.
The show closes up by welcoming Spider Jack to the Twitter Q&A, plus a conversation on turnovers.
Penalty Box Radio’s analytics podcast returns as George and I discuss the perpetually stalling Nashville Predators. Things have not looked good lately, in spite of a 3-1-1 record in their last five games and a recent playoff berth.
In this episode, we break down the specific on-ice areas that are lacking, and discuss from whom we should be expecting more. Is it the players? The coaches? The management?
We also get into one of my own favorite subjects: zone transitions. The Predators rely on one player in particular to transition out of the defensive zone with possession of the puck, which welcomes a lot of unfair blame and negative attention. With the playoffs around the corner, is it too late to mix it up and diversify this approach?
Finally, I get fired up about some personnel decisions and lose my voice right before we conclude.
As always, we welcome your questions and comments, particularly regarding hockey, math, or some combination. You can reach out to me on Twitter @WadeM117 and George @GeorgeM1019.
Thanks for listening!
The guys sit down and record during the Preds game against the Wild Monday night. All they need is a win and they're in. Spoiler...they're in. Also, they welcome the newest members of the Preds, Dante Fabbro and Rem Pitlick to the team and what they represent for the future of the Preds.

The Nashville Predators fell to the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins 2-1 in the shootout Tuesday night. The game featured multiple back and forth efforts between the two teams before Pittsburgh took a 1-0 lead late in the second period. It wasn't until there was only about 3:00 minutes remaining in regulation that Ryan Ellis scored the tying goal to force the game to overtime. It was Sidney Crosby that scored in the shootout to give the Penguins the victory.
Overall, it was a positive locker room as they knew they had a solid defensive effort, continuing to build on the previous three victories they earned.
Hear from Ryan Ellis, Rocco Grimaldi, Pekka Rinne and head coach Peter Laviolette in Justin Bradford's post game report.
What a stacked show this week! We kick it off discussing the Preds 3-game win streak and talk about our little friend, Asher Collier and Make-A-Wish.

Lastly, the Predators celebrated 90s night, and we made sure to get in on the fun. We also answered Twitter questions related to Preds MVPs, favorite Preds of the past and prospects. (33:45)
It's a full discussion show where Justin, Glynne and Intern Ally discuss the Nashville Predators, their inconsistencies and if they have enough time to get set for the playoffs.
It's March. While most of the sports world will be caught up with March Madness, the hockey world focuses on the slow steady march to the playoffs. Will Columbus pull off their gamble going all in? Will the Yotes or Hurricanes be the dark horse entries? Can the Preds overcome St. Louis and Winnipeg? We discuss all these things, take a look at the playoff standings overall, and to borrow a quote from Adam Vingan, discuss if Turris can get his groove back before it is too late.

The Nashville Predators fell to the Carolina Hurricanes 5-3 Saturday evening. The began with the Preds taking three penalties less than five minutes into the game. Not the best start.
Mikael Granlund notched his first in a a Preds uniform Saturday evening. It was a weird call on the ice and the whistle originally blew, then a goal was celebrated, then deemed goaltender interference, then Nashville challenged the interference, which was overturned leading to Granlund's goal.
Hear from Craig Smith and Mattias Ekholm on the slow start and how it needs to be fixed, plus Mikael Granlund on his first goal as a member of the Nashville Predators.
Nashville now heads on the three-game California trip taking on Anaheim, Los Angeles and San Jose on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, respectively.

The NHL was abuzz with news this week, primarily due to the unanimous decision to add Seattle as its 32nd team. On a related note, the NHL announced that the Arizona Coyotes would become the Central Division’s eighth member. Finally, William Nylander signed a new deal for Toronto at the eleventh hour, signaling an end to months of trade rumors and questions about his future.
In this episode, we discuss the implications of another expansion draft for the Nashville Predators. It’s early in the process, but the team will have to send someone out west (that is, as long as the team wants a cut of that sweet $650 million entry fee). George makes his somewhat saddening prediction for which player will be sent packing.
Speaking of the Predators, the injury-ridden team has been finding ways to win games as of late, though the on-ice product has been lacking. Trap hockey is back in Smashville, which is bad news for spectators. This early in the season, do the ends justify the means? Also, has Juuse Saros been banished from the lineup forever? We discuss.
Finally, we wrap up answering some excellent questions from Twitter. Also, George breaks Michael’s brain with an excellent question of his own.
As always, feel free to reach out to Michael (@WadeM117) or George (@GeorgeM1019) on Twitter if you have questions or comments. Thanks for listening!

We then dive into the NHL expansion to Seattle including a rant on the expansion draft.
Next, Arizona will be joining the Central Division in 2021. We talk realignment.
We close it up discussing our favorite arenas and more!
It's been a busy time for the guys since last getting behind the mics. Daniel got an espresso machine, Matt's learning his days of the week, and Kyle got engaged! Meanwhile in the hockey world, the Flyers axed their GM, Tom Wilson is being Tom Wilson, and the Sabres went on a TEN game win streak in the month of November. Also, how about that Chicago game eh? It felt good to destroy them after being embarrassed by Arizona among the other games the team has played since our last recording. We've got it all and then some. So kick back, grab an espresso, and let us pump hockey goodness into your ears.

It really is the most wonderful time of the year. With most NHL teams having played 25 games or more, we can really start to use trends to make predictions for the rest of the year. There's still a lot of time for adjustments, of course, but at this point, we pretty much know which teams are "for real."

No one knows, but don't count on him remaining unemployed very long.
