MMRBQ 2024 was nothing short of electrifying, and it all began when Jersey Calling hit the main stage of Freedom Mortgage Pavilion in Camden, NJ. Shortly after their set, this year’s featured Local Shots band joined Brent Porche live at the broadcast booth to revel in their ‘RBQ moment.

Moments after their first performance together in over a decade, Philly’s own Silvertide gathered at the broadcast booth at MMRBQ 2024, basking in the glow of what had just transpired.

Nick Perri, Walt Lafty, Brian Weaver, Mark Melchiorre, and Kevin Frank shared their excitement on air with Brent Porche, and traced the moments that led them to the MMRBQ stage. After a long hiatus, when they began tossing around the idea of a reunion, the important stipulation was that it had to be fun. That philosophy, along with sharpening the songs that Philly knows and loves, resonated from the pit to the lawn at Freedom Mortgage Pavilion.

Seeing the band back in action made it feel like we’d turned the clock back to their early 2000s heyday, but with all the experience and soul that comes with many years spent in the industry. What made this reunion even more special was how the band member’s kids were part of the experience for the first time, pointing out that their children barely know that this music was huge a huge part of our lives 20 years ago.

It’s a full-circle moment for Silvertide, who not only celebrated their epic past and their debut album Show & Tell, but are also brewing up new projects, including a holiday show at the TLA and potentially new music on the horizon.

Green Day were in Philadelphia on August 9th for a tour that's celebrating 30 years of 'Dookie' and 20 years of 'American Idiot.' They played both of those albums in their entirety, plus a ton of hits and a few new songs, too (36 in all!).

Backstage at Citizens Bank Park, in an extended conversation with Pierre Robert, Tré Cool talks about Green Day's place in pop culture, from their link to Deadpool & Wolverine to working alongside Mark Hamill in new video for "Corvette Summer." He shares stories of drumming alongside not one, but two Beatles, plus the time he jammed with Willie Nelson: "Willie's asking you to play drums; who cares how high you are?!"

Tré also reflected on the way that Green Day's audience has grown up with them, and how the band are feeling better - and closer - than ever before. And it's clear that they love coming back to Philly, as they've been doing faithfully since '93.

Take it from TrĂ©: "It’s nice to be on America's finest, curated-by-hand rock and roll radio station: WMMR!"

Between Green Day, the Smashing Pumpkins, Rancid and the Linda Lindas, Brent Porche will be broadcasting live from the concourse, so stop by and say hi. MMRBQ 2024 is on sale NOW! Pierre Robert and Lzzy Hale of Halestorm had a chat live on the air today about the band's return to the MMRBQ stage this September. The album Rockstar is fantastic and includes 30 songs with guests from Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney, Rob Halford, John Fogerty, Elton John, Chris Stapleton, Joan Jett, Sting, Mick Fleetwood, and more than a dozen others.

Our Program Director in 1978 to 1980, Jeff Pollack, was at the helm of the WMMR for only a year and a half but brought WMMR back to #1 in the ratings and had so much to do with the revitalization of what we now call Putting Philly First. Jeff, who was just 26 at the time, would be the 3rd PD in 3 years and the station was struggling. When questioned about taking on that role at such a young age in the interview, his response was: "Hey man, it's not how long you play the guitar, it’s how you play it." He got the job on the spot! He started with bringing back MMR mainstays including Joe Bonadonna and Michael Tearson, then he added more of the music to the playlist that we love still to this day. Pollack began the legendary block parties with a free concert on South Street, that we still talk about at the station. He tells us how the officials, rightfully so, denied the permit - but it was Philly in the late 70's, so they got one anyway and it was madness. One of our most famous pictures that still hangs in MMR's hallways is at that Southside Johnny show with thousands of fans in every corner of the picture including on roofs hanging out of windows and covering every inch of South Street. Jeff is now the Chairman/CEO of Pollack Music & Media Group, an international media music consultancy.

It's a great trip down Philly memory lane, and you can find out more about him on https://www.pollackmedia.com/

Few bands have managed to endure four decades of shifting trends and breakneck performances in the way that Metallica has. Even fewer have solidified their legacy while at the height of their career. They're still selling out stadium double-headers while seeping into the consciousness of Gen Z via Stranger Things and TikTok virality, connecting their past to their future. Forty years after their debut album Kill 'Em All and the sophomore success of Ride The Lightning, even Kirk Hammett seems overwhelmed by the magnitude of it all...

Step aside, Cake Boss. Chris Jericho is coming for your crown.

Chris Jericho is a man of many talents: a professional wrestler, a singer, and... future baker? That’s right folks, Jericho has a dream of tossing in his bedazzled jackets from the ring and putting on the apron.

Not.

During a call with The Preston & Steve Show on Monday (4/10), Preston asked Jericho one of those deep, introspective questions. It went something like: since you are already successfully following two career paths, are there any unfulfilled passions that you dreams of following? Without hesitation, the burly front man answered by saying that he always wanted to own a bakery.

After the moment of shock wore off, the show members responded with a collective, awww followed by a really? “No, not really!” Jericho clapped back without skipping a beat. Through the eruption of laughter everyone admitted to being convinced that he was serious.

Than, just as the topic was changing to the Fozzy gig at Brooklyn Bowl Philadelphia on Sunday, April 16th, Casey threw out the idea to make Jericoconut Cream Pies. He might be on to something.

Who would have thought that someone who throws people through tables would want to create cakes and croissants? Not us!

Jericho, aside from being an excellent gaslighter, and talented musician, also has an impressive wrestling career and the numbers to prove it. As a professional wrestler, he has fought in over 2,500 matches in a variety of different wrestling organizations, winning nearly 51% of them.

Jericho grew up having a passion for wrestling and pursued it when he was young. He attended wrestling school, and in that time took up skills in drumming. This would fuel another passion

He took breaks in his wrestling career, taking time to be the singer of a KISS cover band. In his interview with Preston and Steve, Chris talked about how important it is to keep up with music in this day and age, as it changes so rapidly.

Growing up in the 80s, Chris found a love for KISS, and always wanted to become a front man for a band. Jericho was inspired by Paul Staney for his artistry and said that being in a band allowed for a more collaborative outlet compared to the more individual world of wrestling. Where he was inspired by Paul Stanley and the world, he channeled that energy into the ring.

As younger people listen to music daily on our phones, Jericho said that releasing a song every three to four months is easier to consume than an entire album that is released years apart from one another.

More importantly, Jericho talked about the balance between his musical and wrestling career. He talked about how some wrestlers dabble in the music world, and how some musicians even dabble into the wrestling world.

Perhaps Chris Jericho will dabble in the baking world, and if/when he does, we cannot wait to try his croissants. In the meantime, we’ll be rocking out with Fozzy this Sunday ay Brooklyn Bowl.

When music is your whole life, and suddenly life gets interrupted
.

In lost and rare archival music videos, photos, and very personal and candid lock-down interviews, the film finds 80s rock icon John Waite reflecting back on his 5-decade career. The film features 27 songs from across John’s career, from pioneer rock-video band The Babys in the 1970s, to his breakthrough as a solo artist in the early days of MTV, to touring with an actual Beatle, John recounts his struggles inside the commercialized world of the music business and his independent pursuits as a self-powered solo, live music artist.

And 93.3 WMMR’s Jacky Bam Bam is part of that journey. “We love Jacky, he’s like the 5th Beatle,” John told The Preston & Steve Show. The nighttime DJ befriended the musician somewhere along the way, “he’s been in integral part of our East Coast growth.”

Their friendship continues to this day. During the conversation with the MMR morning show, John pointed out what it is about Jacky’s energy that draws people too him, “he’s always there, he’s like a bright light.”

Enjoy John Waite's conversation with The Preston & Steve show about the new documentary, "The Hard Way."

With Hurricane Ian sweeping through the southeastern United States, relief efforts are needed, and Beasley Media Group is supporting the Red Cross Disaster Relief in its mission to support those affected by the hurricane.

The Preston & Steve Show took time to spotlight the Red Cross Disaster Relief. We heard stories from different listeners, several of whom found themselves and their loves deeply impacted by Hurricane Ian. Listener Rich and his family live in Fort Myers and suffered greatly, unfortunately losing everything in their home to four to five feet of water. Listener Allie’s parents were in the eye of the hurricane for over twelve hours, taking shelter in a closet in their home.

We also got to hear from a long-time listener, Mark, who told us that getting flood insurance in the state of Florida is nearly impossible. He informed us of terrible clauses in policies like having to have your roof blown off to qualify. Mark has been listening to WMMR since 1971, and he appreciates everything the station has done since, including it and Beasley Media Group’s support of the Red Cross Disaster Relief.

Steve Wilson, a friend of the show and the head honcho of Wilson’s Secret Sauce, checked in as well. He and the folks at Wilson’s Secret Sauce have been delivering food and supplies to those in the southeast as part of the relief effort. Steve likes to run his business with a community-oriented mindset, and he says that supporting the relief effort is a major part of that.

Listener Chris, an insurance agent, called in with information about what can and can not get covered during times like this. Flooding insurance is a slippery slope overall, but he encourages people to look towards the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) for details.

Any and all donations can provide supplies, meals, shelter, and more to those affected by Hurricane Ian. Visit wmmr.comto donate.

You can also text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation. We thank you, the listeners of The Preston & Steve Show, for joining us in supporting this important work.

Larkin Poe joined the gang in-studio for an incredible performance and interview on Friday. For those that don’t know, Larkin Poe is a roots rock band from north Georgia. Fronted by sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell, their music features bluesy riffs and soulful vocals.

The two graced us with their lovely presence and talked about their rock n’ roll upbringing. They referred to themselves as “students of the blues.” They grew up on all things rock thanks to their parents, so they ditched their classical instruments and picked up “banjos and mandolins.”

Well, thank goodness they did! Their sixth album comes out on the 11th of November and they actually gave the gang a sneak peek (dedicated especially to Jacky Bam Bam) of one of their new tracks, “Strike Gold.” It’s so new, Rebecca even needed a lyric sheet! With its tight harmonies and featured slide guitar, the song is sure to be a big hit. Check out their live performances of “Holy Ghost Fire” and “Strike Gold” on the Preston and Steve YouTube channel!

Speaking of Jacky Bam Bam
he, Casey, and Kyle checked in from Casey’s Big Adventure to hang with Larkin Poe as well. Just outside Los Angeles, Jacky was a bit bummed because he wanted to go record shopping with Rebecca and Megan next time they were in town
better luck next time Jacky! (Go enjoy the pacific ocean
)

Jacky asked Larkin Poe who the best band they have shared the stage with has been thus far. While it was hard to decide, Rebecca landed on Bob Seger. Touring arenas with him was a huge moment for them. Another huge moment; Elton John said Self Made Man was one of his favorite albums of the year when it came out.

Let’s see if he says the same about their new record, “Blood Harmony.” We think he may! Thanks to Larkin Poe for stopping by, and also for giving us the world debut of their new song! We can’t wait to see what’s in store for them, and also to see them again!

Joe Perry is back in the saddle again
WMMR’s Brent Porche welcomed the Aerosmith guitarist in Studio Z ahead of his show with the Joe Perry Project later this month in Atlantic City.

On this run of tour dates we’ll hear music from Perry’s upcoming album Sweetzerland Manifest MKII, due out later this year. The LP is a family affair; Perry says he wrote several of the songs with his sons Roman and Tony. The proud dad explains: “I love working with my kids
I mean, they’re grown men now
but I always learn something when I work with them.”

One of those tracks is the new single “Quake”.

In addition to the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer himself, the Joe Perry Project features a talented lineup: his longtime drummer Joe Pet on the drums, and the additions of Buck Johnson on the keys (who fans may know from his work with Aerosmith and the Hollywood Vampires), plus Chris Wyse on bass (Hollywood Vampires/Ozzy Osbourne) and Gary Cherone (Extreme/Van Halen) on vocals.

“I’m excited about those songs,” Perry says of the new material, “and as usual, we’ll probably dig out a couple of really deep Aerosmith cuts.”

Perry hinted at what the Bad Boys from Boston have in store for their 50th anniversary, plus what to expect at Aerosmith’s ‘Deuces Are Wild’ residency in Las Vegas, news on the Hollywood Vampires and more. Grab tickets to the upcoming Joe Perry Project show here.

Pierre Robert hosts an April 7, 2022 playback of Bruce Springsteen's guest DJ appearance. Guests include Kevin Gunn, MMR's Creative Director who found the long lost tape and David Dye who hosted Bruce in the Rittenhouse Square studio that Sunday afternoon in 1974.

<<<>>>>

From deep in the MMaRchives, comes a long-lost recording of Bruce Springsteen, live on the air at WMMR studios at 19th & Walnut on Rittenhouse Square
playing songs of his choosing and filling in the MMR audience of his next moves.

Bruce was in between the release of his 2nd and 3rd albums, doing a college tour with a setlist that included songs from his debut Greetings From Asbury Park as well as the follow up, The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle.  It would be a year before the world exploded and Born to Run propelled Bruce and the band to unimagined stardom.

David Dye, WXPN’s former World CafĂ© host, and in the small ‘MMR studio that day remembers, “ I am pretty sure this was a weekend shift, probably Saturday afternoon.  The only way I ever set up having Bruce on the air was to ask him at a gig.”

Bruce spent an hour + there playing a wide variety of songs.  Dye recalls, “Believe it or not Bruce could be shy, as you may hear.  That’s why I suggested the guest DJ idea- figuring that would be easier.  It was.  Particularly got better when he discovered the oldies compilations and that led to him playing “Stay” by Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs.”

The 10 inch reel to reel recording was found by current MMR creative services director, Kevin Gunn, an avowed Bruce-head.  He gently badgered our engineering department to repair an old reel to reel tape machine back to serviceable order to dub the recording from analog tape to digital form and ready it for playback.

Bruce Dickinson: pilot, entrepreneur, brewmaster, singer of the mighty Iron Maiden
and a possible psychopath, in the best way. Needless to say, he’s got a lot of stories to tell, and we’ll hear about all of it in An Evening With Bruce Dickinson on Monday night at the Fillmore. WMMR's Sara asks the Air Raid Siren what it takes to prep for a one-man show versus a massive Maiden concert, the psychology of rage and pain, and what powers his pioneering spirit.

Recently, I was fortunate to have Tina Hutchence in the studio with me to discuss her second book about her brother, called Michael: My Brother, The Lost Boy of INXS w/ Jen Jewel Brown. It was released in Europe September of 2018 and will be available for purchase in the USA October 2019. But, it can be purchased online now.

Michael: My Brother, The Lost Boy of INXS is an excellent book. Tina really paints a picture that gives an insight into who Michael Hutchence was. Quite a different Michael Hutchence than we heard about in the tabloids. Tina did an exceptional job doing the detective work to fill in holes and answer questions she had about Michael. She also did an incredible job figuring out and sharing as much as she could about Michael's last 24-48 hours.

Michael: My Brother, The Lost Boy of INXS also discusses his relationship with his band and answers many questions we may have had about Michael Hutchence.

I apologize for sounding fanboy at times during my conversation with Tina. She was amazing and shared so much about the book, Michael and things we did not know in the INXS story. I found myself wrapped up in this book a few times and had to force myself to set it down. It's an excellent read. Thank you for listening!
