In our highly stimulating environments, mantra utilizes concrete words spoken aloud which serve as a very impactful tool to shift one's focus even among distraction. Nikita offers insight to to the implementation of this practice and even offers the additional (also very concrete) tool of Mala beads for sharpening concentration. She invites us to bring this effective tool into our practice and our teachings.

With upmost respect for the scientific and somatic elements of the yoga practice; Nikita brings to our attention that sanskrit mantra evokes deities of mythology. This practice carries a distinctly mystical (or even magical) element to it and she points out that perhaps there exist room for this magic even in an increasingly fact-based reality we exist in.

Meet Nikita Ahuja, yoga teacher and artist! Nikita's teaching practice is informed by a disciplined ashtanga practice combined with her upbringing in a traditional Indian household where yoga was introduced to her in the form of Sanskrit mantra, philosophy, pranayama, and Ayurveda. Her parents shared practices of repeating different mantras and eating (or fasting from) specific foods to reach a state of balance, depending on the situation or imbalance she was experiencing. There were specific practices denoted for sleep, anxiousness, lethargy, loss, celebration, etc. In this episode Nikita speaks to implementing Mantra as a tool for alignment & awareness both in our activities of daily life as well as our practice of teaching yoga.

Contrary to popular belief, creating accessible asana for community classes is much more than simply modifying poses to be "easier" for students. Accessibility, especially in yoga practice, is a complex & multi-faceted topic. In this episode, I outline a 5-point framework to begin creating classes that are truly for all bodies, levels, ages and more. This is by no means a step-by-step guide (if ONLY it were that easy), but rather interdependent variables to constantly evaluate and re-evaluate. .

Especially with the increase in students being referred to yoga practice, more often we see students with pre-existing injuries and problem areas in the body. Eric Finger (Austin- based physical therapist and yoga practitioner) discusses concepts such as regional interdependence, the path of least resistance and more. These topics help us to avoid exacerbating already-existing injuries in our yoga students.

Yoga should be a healing modality for body, mind and breath/spirit, but unfortunately sustaining injuries in practice is a reality. But why and when do injuries occur? In this episode, Eric Finger (Austin-based mobile physical therapist) and I explore this topic of provoking injuries. More importantly we speak about how to prevent injuries in yoga practice.

Eric Finger (Mobile physical therapist, father of three, triathlete and yoga practitioner) speaks to his own personal injury in yoga when a well-intentioned teacher "assisted" him into a deeper range of motion in plow pose. He gives us some insight to this process and additionally, we explore some of the elements that contributed to this injury in practice and of course what we as teachers can do (and not do) in preventing situations like this.

Surrender can be explained...or better said.....surrender can be experienced first at a somatic level. Being that the majority of students arrive to yoga practice for the physical benefits, but often stay practicing for the mental, emotional, & spiritual benefits; we can encourage our students to first feel release in the postures before explaining the meaning. Pamela Seelig, author of "Threads of Yoga, Themes: Reflection and Meditations to weave into Practice," provides insight to the two types of surrender found in the yoga sutra and how we can explain these concepts to our yoga students.

Meet your community where they are at. HINT: They are not all in the yoga studios. You are a yoga teacher, and if I had to guess...you are already comfortable going against the grain. By choosing this path, you are already traveling down the road less traveled by. So why is it different on our yoga teaching journey? Ashley Zuberi, of Inhale Thrive, explains that when many yoga studios offer westernized vinyasa yoga and many yoga instructors are in pursuit of teaching at these popular spaces....it leaves out a whole bunch of our population that is not being served. This pervasive type of practice is not only inaccessible to large parts of our community but also tends to conveniently look over many of the yoga teachings. As yoga teachers, we have to "think outside the box" as we choose the services and offerings to provide to our community. One size does not fit all, for student nor for teacher. Both Ashley and I agree that teaching at yoga studios full-time is not the best pathway for every single instructor. There are so many different avenues for us to pursue or even create! I personally LOVE teaching at yoga studios and I view myself in this environment for a long time but it is not the only way I chose to serve my community. I supplement this services with other offerings and I encourage any other teacher to truly "teach out outside the box, to reach outside the box."

The Nursing process is an essential 5-step method for the nurse in order to deliver holistic care. This was a key concept for me as a nurse that really assisted in the development and sharpening of my critical thinking skills. I found the concept to be directly applicable to us yoga instructors and I my desire is that this will get the wheels in your head spinning and really hone in your critical thinking skills as you teach and guide the minds and bodies of your students. The reality is that you are probably naturally already doing most if not all of the above, but the when I saw this link between the nursing process and teaching yoga it allowed me to apply a label. Labeling emotions has long been a practice of mindfulness and labeling my actions is a beautiful way in which to bring what I am doing to my awareness. When we teach in a yoga studio, it is “our place;” but whenever we leave the studio, we have the opportunity to be an example of living the practice off the mat. As yoga teachers, we are a living example of what the practice can do, and we are not some mystical and ethereal being. It is important to identify our responsibility for our contributions. Quick anatomy refresher! Over this past week I noticed that in two of the classes I took, both teachers referred to the intercostals!!! It seems like this is trending word in the world of yoga, so lets review it!
I know what an intercostal muscle is and you probably, but what about all of the other students in the room?...
Have you ever been to a specialty office (doctor, mechanic, computer engineer, etc) and they spoke or explained something in jargon so specific to their profession that you had no idea what they are saying? I certainly have. We are yoga instructors by trade and have knowledge that extends far beyond that of most of our students. I recommend that you keep this in mind as you teach. One of the gifts we have to offer our students as yoga teachers is taking our understanding of complex anatomical and energetic concepts and then translating them into language that is easy to understand. Even more importantly, into a language that allows the students to feel these concepts within their own body.
