Programme Director Luke Hashman reflects on the journey…
Today marks eight years since Wycombe Sound first went live on 106.6 FM on 31st October 2016. Following three years of hard work by a wide range of volunteers, including temporary broadcasts in the winters of 2013, 2014 and 2015, in April 2016 Ofcom awarded Wycombe Sound a five-year licence and work immediately began to prepare for our launch later that year.
We are now more than halfway through our second five-year licence period, and the station continues to be entirely volunteer run. We initially set up Wycombe Sound because the local radio landscape in Buckinghamshire saw High Wycombe and its surrounding villages fall into a media black hole, not picked up by London-based stations but too far out to be covered by stations in Oxford and with our local BBC station based in Bedfordshire, coverage from them was also minimal. During recent years, the local radio landscape has become markedly bleaker, with further scaling back by both the BBC and local commercial radio stations, whose output is increasingly networked for national broadcast.
Radio is an intensely personal medium, a conversation between presenter and listener. Being able to relate to a presenter and have something in common with them is the key to truly great radio. Being a voluntary organisation, everybody at Wycombe Sound is committed to what they do – our motivation is the listener, not a commercial interest. Through wide-ranging content, from specialist music to comprehensive sports coverage, local journalism and conversation with the people who make our community, Wycombe Sound has given a platform to countless people in the South Bucks area. Some have had initiatives to promote, achievements to celebrate, valuable causes to share; some have gone on to become presenters themselves.
Through their involvement, many of our volunteers have gained new skills and confidence. Some have gone on to forge broadcasting careers with national broadcasters. Others have achieved recognition in national awards in the radio sector. Many have found a new passion. Our community of volunteers is always growing, with people from all walks of life, all levels of experience, and an age range that spans more than 70 years. We strive to give everybody a platform and a voice. For some, they have also come away with a renewed sense of purpose.
Working with local partners, we have used our facilities to enable members of our community to develop their skills and work towards returning to employment after long periods out of work. During this election year, we were able to give hundreds of local people a voice, putting your questions directly to the candidates looking to be your next MP, in a package of coverage that has been shortlisted for a national award.
Wycombe Sound is far more than just a radio station that plays music and features local voices. It is a powerful, community-based mission to promote all that is great about our area, and those who live and work here.
Thank you to everyone who has played a part in our journey over the years – from all those who have volunteered with us, including many who have given very long periods of service – to everyone who interacts with us, supports the organisation and its development. Thank you to local businesses who have shown us invaluable support over the years, through advertising with us, partnership working, and ongoing collaboration. Finally, thank you for listening. You are the reason we do what we do, and it has been a privilege to be on the airwaves for eight years.
Exciting times and a bright future lie ahead, and we can’t wait to carry on the work we all so enjoy.

The volunteers are the life and soul of Wycombe Sound, and I thank every single one for the part that they play. Anyone can build a studio but when the community comes together to celebrate all that is good locally, that’s when something really special forms.
Having been a volunteer since the early days of the station, it’s been wonderful seeing the station evolve and to now being part of the team leading us forward on the next chapter, I’m excited hearing it play out!

Mark Hobbs has been recognised for his exceptional contributions to the station, showcasing his talent, creativity, and passion for community radio at such a young age. His dedication to Wycombe Sound is truly inspiring, and we are proud to see him recognised with this nomination. Talking of being shortlisted, Mark said: “Taking on Drivetime recently has been the most challenging but most rewarding thing I’ve done and I’m so happy to be nominated!”

Wycombe Sound will be covering the 2024 General Election. We will be broadcasting live from the count on the evening of the 4th July going into the early hours of the 5th until all local results have been announced. Ahead of this, to help enable you to make an informed decision on who to vote for at a local level, we will be offering all 9 High Wycombe candidates a 1:1 interview which we plan to air on Sunday 23 June from 5pm, and make available on our website.
We will also be facilitating a hustings debate for each of the following constituencies, which all cover parts of our coverage area:
– High Wycombe (Scheduled to air on Monday 24 June from 8pm)
– Chesham and Amersham (Scheduled to air on Tuesday 25 June from 8pm)
– Beaconsfield (Scheduled to air on Wednesday 26 June from 8pm)
– Mid Buckinghamshire (Scheduled to air on Thursday 27 June from 8pm)

Rob Couhig has announced the end of his tenure as Chairman of Wycombe Wanderers Football Club.
Publishing on their website, WWFC has announced that Dan Rice, who was appointed as a member of the Board of Directors and Chief Football Officer will take over as the Interim Chairman.

He has been a huge energy at the club, and for us all at Wycombe Sound when speaking through various media engagements and his many sessions on air. Rob Couhig purchased a majority shareholding of WWFC in 2019, becoming Chairman several months later. He and his family became an integral part of the club and a huge part of the promotion into the Championship for the first time. Not forgetting helping to steer the Blues through the challenging time of Covid.
“I have the utmost respect and appreciation for the work that Rob and his family have done at Wycombe Wanderers. During the many months that I have got to know him, he has become a friend and someone that I have been able to trust and call on for advice and guidance.

Wycombe Sound is delighted to welcome Luke Hashman and Liam Gates to the Board of Directors, joining as Programme Director and Managing Director respectively.
This week, Luke and Liam were asked to join the Board of Directors as Luke Davis stepped down from his Programme Director role and Chris Phillips became Chairman.
Both have been long-time contributors to the station, both on and off air, having joined in 2013 during Wycombe Sound’s first pilot broadcast.
As the new Managing Director of Wycombe Sound, I am thrilled to embark on this journey with our amazing team of volunteers. Having been involved with the station for over 10 years since before our full-time license, this is a huge privilege. We’ve built a legacy of serving our community through the airwaves, and now, we’re tuning into the future with fresh ideas and a continued unwavering commitment to High Wycombe & the surrounding area.
Together, we’ll continue to amplify the voices of our community and spin the dial towards an exciting new chapter.

Carousel Buses and Redline Buses have both stepped forward with a commitment to cover as much of the Arriva service as possible.Wycombe Sound understands that while Arriva is currently running consultations and has yet to formalise this, they have submitted de-registrations to Buckinghamshire Council last Friday to formally cease local services from 27 July 2024.

19 May – Redline Buses announce service changes from Sunday 28 July to cover as much of the withdrawn service as possible
Following the news that Arriva will be closing their Aylesbury and High Wycombe depots after their last service on Saturday 27th July 2024, we are pleased to announce that we will be making some changes to our service timetables which will commence from Sunday 28th July 2024.
We will aim to cover as much of the withdrawn Arriva network as possible and timetables will be publicised shortly.
These changes include:
– A new service between Aylesbury and High Wycombe which will serve Lacey Green, Naphill and Hughenden Valley.
– Service X20 will divert via Haddenham and continue to serve Oxford

16 May – Carousel Buses confirm new local services from 28 July 2024
Following the news that Arriva will be closing their High Wycombe and Aylesbury depots after the last service on Saturday 27th July 2024, we are pleased to advise that we will be stepping in to provide replacement services in and around Buckinghamshire from Sunday 28th July 2024. Many of the routes are the same as Arriva, but some timetables and route numbers will change.

Fares and Tickets
All of the above services will be part of the Government’s national £2 fare cap scheme, so this will continue to be the maximum fare you will pay for a single journey.
Our existing range of Carousel Zone day, week and period products will continue to be issued and accepted on all of our services, and will include the new routes that we will be operating from 28th July 2024. To find out more about our Zone tickets, please click here or download our app.
FreeFlow “Tap On Tap Off” will be available on all services, with automatic capping in place to ensure that you don’t pay more than the cost of a day ticket for the area that you travelled in, if this is less than the total cost of the single fares. Simply “tap on” the driver’s ticket machine at the start of each journey and “tap off” at the end of each journey using a contactless payment method. Wycombe SMARTzone and Reading All-Bus multi operator ticketing products will continue to be valid on the new Carousel network, mirroring the current areas of validity.
You can find our new network map here, which shows the zone boundaries for all Carousel routes, so you can easily identify which product best suits your needs.
If you hold an existing Arriva period product that is not currently valid for use on our services, this will not be valid on Carousel services from 28th July. Arriva are advising customers who hold these tickets to request a refund here: https://www.arrivabus.co.uk/help/contact-us

14 May – Arriva announce proposed closure of Aylesbury and High Wycombe depots
We have taken the difficult decision to begin consultation with our colleagues on the proposed closure of our Aylesbury and High Wycombe depots. Despite extensive efforts to turn the situation around, including making network changes to better reflect local demand, both sites continue to be loss-making.
There will be no immediate impact on services and we will work with local authority partners to explore ways to minimise the impact, should we withdraw services.
We will keep our customers and our employees updated throughout this period.
If the closures go ahead, Arriva will no longer operate the following services:o X7/X8 – Aylesbury to Oxford
o X9/X90 – Aylesbury to High Wycombe
o 2 – High Wycombe to Booker
o 3 – High Wycombe to Castlefield
o 4 – High Wycombe to Lane End
o 5/5a – High Wycombe to Bourne End
o 6/6a – High Wycombe to Bourne End
o 7/7a – High Wycombe to Bourne End and Maidenhead

Here’s what’s coming up on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day on Wycombe Sound.
On Christmas Eve we have a pretty normal Sunday schedule with some special Christmas shows thrown in, including a special show from the Classic Counts team, a special version of The Nutcracker story featuring music from Tchaikovsky’s ballet, plus the return of Aimee’s Musical Soundtrack and Solid Gold Local History for a Christmas Special. There is also two visits to The All Saints Parish Church, first thier 9 Lessons and Carol Service and later in the night Midnight Mass live from the church.
On Christmas Day, Luke Hashman wakes up Wycombe with The Breakfast Show, followed by David Weston and at 1pm the return of The Three Wise Monkeys, with Rob, Martin and Luke. From 4pm Keith Bowden has (nearly) every Christmas Number 1. Mr Q has two hours of Country Music, followed by New Muisc Monday and WyxTape.
On Boxing Day from 8 join Luke (the other one) for music, games and a Guess the Year, another chance to hear Solid Gold Local History, before attention turns to the football with build up from 2 and live coverage from 3pm (Luke Hashman will be live online and Radioplayer). The WycSo Top 20 returns from 6 were we find out who the most played artist and song of 2023 on Wycombe Sound, before boxing day ends with a normal Tuesday evening schedule including Chatsworth and The Funk and Soul Archive.

Wycombe Swan Panto stars are in the first week of rehearsals ahead of the first night on Friday 8th December, Beauty and The Beast stars Strictly Come Dancing glitter-ball winner Joe McFadden, Hear’say and musical theatre star Suzanne Shaw as the Enchantress, and the world’s funniest redhead La Voix as Dame Peggy Pullem and Wycombe favourite Jon Clegg will also make a welcome return as Percy Pullem.
Colin went along to this year’s Panto Press Day and started by talking to Suzanne Shaw who after 16 years has finally had her wish come true by performing in her hometown theatre.
Joe McFadden returns to Wycombe Swan after performing in Agatha Christie play ’The Mirror Crack’d earlier this year and is looking forward to reprising a role he has played before.
La Voix who is no stranger to panto land and loves Beauty and The Beast, gives us some clues on some of the songs you might hear in this year’s production and how rehearsals are going.
Jon Clegg is back in this year’s panto production after being in last year’s Cinderella and is looking forward to welcoming audiences back especially those who might be making their first trip to the theatre.
Wycombe Swan and Imagine Theatre will be supporting local charity, Citizens Advice Bucks and their Christmas Volunteer Appeal which will help with the aim to raise funds for new frontline volunteer advisors to help them to reach 2 thousand more people across the county.
Colin’s been speaking to Abi May from the charity’s fundraising team to find out more about the collaboration.
This year’s Panto runs from Friday 8th December till Sunday 31st December and along with Suzanne, Joe, La Voix and Jon stars James Bisp as the Beast and Verity Thompson as Belle. Thames Valley Police were among those involved in Operation Sceptre, a national week of action, education and awareness-raising to tackle knife crime and violence which started on 13th November.
The force’s approach is to increase education and early intervention to stop young people getting involved in crime in the first place. Strong proactive policing also tackles those who carry knives.
All recorded knife crime is down 4% across the whole Thames Valley over the past 12 months. 1186 offences were recorded between 1 October 2022 and 31 October 2023.
The area is one of 20 with a Home Office-funded Violence Reduction Unit, a partnership of local councils, police, fire, education, health and community groups, with the aim of working together to prevent violence.
It also supports a range of early intervention projects, including a programme run by Wycombe Wanderers Foundation
A new mobile app sends officers to hotspot areas, providing a high visibility presence, putting officers in the right places at the right times.
There are knife amnesty bins at High Wycombe police station and between Frogmoor and Arch Way in the town centre.

HWBIDCo’s recently launched ‘Diverted Giving’ scheme will be working in conjunction with local charity, The Oasis Partnership, to ensure all public donations reach those in need of meaningful support and help tackle drug and alcohol use amongst the street begging community.
The three ‘Diverted Giving Points’ – on the High Street, on White Hart Street and at McDonald’s Drive-Thru – enable the public to make a nominal payment via a fixed card terminal, with all donations channeled through a central charitable trust. Funds will go towards establishing a team of Street Support Outreach Staff, who will engage with anyone asking for money and address their needs appropriately, working with local organisations to provide assistance with drugs & alcohol support, shelter or aid.

‘High Wycombe Vegan Market’ – Sunday 23rd April – 10am to 4pm
High Wycombe shoppers will once again be treated to an array of delicious vegan food and eco-friendly goods as Vegan Markets UK makes its return to the town centre. Featuring over 30 stalls, the market will be located in the High Street and include vegan fast food, healthy eats, artisan savouries, sweet bakes, craft cheeses, handmade cosmetics, ethical clothing and locally made arts and crafts.
‘Coronation Tea Party’ – Monday 8th May – 11am to 4pm
The town will be in for yet another Royal-treat as a ‘Coronation Tea Party’ takes place in the town centre, in celebration of the ascension of King Charles III. Hosted in conjuction between HWBIDCo, Wycombe Food Hub & Air Raid Café, there’ll be tea party treats for all, with a Vintage Pop Up Café under the Guildhall, Coronation-themed games & giveaways, plus live music from swinging singers, The Jivettes.
‘Mayor Making’ – Saturday 20th May – 11am to 4pm (Mayor Weighing from 11.45am)
The traditional Mayor Making ceremony returns to High Wycombe – the ONLY town to still carry out the historical custom. A procession of Council dignitaries, including the Mayor, Mace Bearer and Courtiers will take up their place outside the Guildhall for the ‘Weighing’ spectacle, determining whether the Mayor has been ‘getting fat on the taxes’ or weighs ‘and no more’. Join in the fun and try out the tripod scales, plus there’ll be a host of other heritage-led activity taking place throughout the day, celebrating High Wycombe’s rich history & past.
‘Frogfest – 10th Anniversary’ – Sunday 28th May – 11am – 9pm
High Wycombe’s annual family festival, Frogfest is heading back to the town centre for its massive 10th Anniversary musical extravaganza, down the High Street / Church Street and Frogmoor. Featuring TWO live stages and 18 bands, free circus & craft workshops, a land train, local food trucks, craft and gift stalls, face painting, giant games and more… there’ll be entertainment and giveaways for all the family – it’s an event not to be missed!
‘Armed Forces Day’ – Saturday 24th June – 11am – 4pm
The popular Armed Forces Day celebration makes welcome return to the High Street for a military-themed fun day, featuring vintage vehicles, local Army / Air Force and Cadet groups, fundraising with Royal British Legion, plus live music and entertainment. Swing along to the Polka Dots and join in the military-themed craft activities for a family fun day out.
‘Desborough Carnival’ – Saturday 8th July – 11am – 4pm
Desborough Road will be alive with music, dance and carnival-fever this July as the exciting events returns to Desborough Road. This year, HWBIDCo have partnered with Wycombe Arts Centre AND Aylesbury’s famous WhizzFizzFest to bring even more creativity to the project, with live storytelling sessions, TWO music stages, street entertainment, food trucks and performances from local organisations including Jackie Palmer Stage School, Blend Choir, Rock Choir and Castle Street Dance.

The End of an Era: Gareth Ainsworth moves to QPR

After 550 games in charge, Gareth Ainsworth has left Wycombe Wanderers after being announced as the new manager of QPR.
Gareth’s time as a Chairboy started in 2009 when he joined the club on a month’s loan before signing an 18-month contract with the Blues in February 2010. When Gary Waddock left Wycombe in 2012, Gareth was first caretaker manager before ultimately becoming manager of the club.
During Gareth’s time in charge, the club has dodged relegation from the Football League, gained automatic promotion to League One and, for the first time in its history, made it to the Championship, as well as FA Cup runs that fans won’t forget in a long time.
“These 500 games have brought some moments that have been really special, and not just on the pitch. It’s when players come to you and thank you for the part you’ve played in their careers. I won’t ever forget those moments.”

Off the pitch, Gareth has continuously supported local charities and organisations across Wycombe and is an ambassador for the One Can Trust. Gareth has also supported many local events, including the Christmas Light Switch On where he performed with his band in 2021.
Gareth’s love for the club, its history, and its supporters have been highlighted many times across his 11 years as a manager, with messages to fans who are unwell or families who have lost loved ones, as well as former players and managers too.
“I was really touched to hear from Gareth. For him to take the time to pick up the phone and offer words of encouragement was truly amazing. It actually brought tears to my eyes.“

Wycombe Wanderers has announced the death of former manager and chairman Brian Lee at the age of 86.
He was taken into hospital on Saturday after becoming unwell, just two days after the funeral of his wife of more than sixty years, Shirley Ann.
He died in his sleep in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The Ex-Players Association has described Lee as a giant in the club’s history, leading the Chairboys to four Isthmian League titles in four years in the 1970s.
He later became Chairman, and was involved in planning the move from Loakes Park to Adams Park in 1990, as well as the appointment of Martin O’Neill, the manager who took the club into the Football League in 1993.
Tributes have poured in online, with Chairboys Director Pete Couhig saying that football has “lost a great one” and Wycombe captain Joe Jacobson saying he was “so saddened” to hear the news, having been fortunate enough to meet him a few times and share his “wealth of knowledge about football”.
Wycombe Wanderers manager Gareth Ainsworth has also shared a tribute to Brain today.

Brian Lee was one of the first guests on the first series of The Wycombe Wanderers Show and spoke to Colin about how he got involved with the club and his memories of his time as a Manager and Chairman of the Chairboys

PennFest has announced its amazing line-up for 2023! The two-day festival held in the village of Penn Street will be headlined by Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds on Friday, July 21 and Bastille on Saturday, July 22 in a fantastic multi-genre line-up which has something for every music lover!
On Friday, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, the critically-acclaimed multi-platinum band led by the iconic musician, will be preceded by guitar legend Johnny Marr and Supergrass frontman/acclaimed solo artist Gaz Coombes. A High Wycombe firefighter is asking for donations which will be sent to colleagues in Ukraine on Monday.
The former Gap store in the Eden Shopping Centre is being used as a collection point for items including warm socks, blankets, torches and gloves.
Fire Rescue Station Commander Jason Hull’s wife is from Ukraine, who he met while working in the country.
He’s arranged for a lorry to deliver the supplies and tells Wycombe Sound, firefighters there need our help.
The collection point is open between 8 and 8 each day
Items needed: Male thermals, Body armour, Boots 42-45, Warm socks, Helmets (even like builders), Sleeping bags, Blankets Torches/batteries, Gloves, Foam sleeping mats, Snickers/Mars bars. All donations welcome

There is a new winner of the Shopmobility Pancake Race!
Six teams took part in raising money and flipping pancakes including previous winners Eden Security and Noodle Nation. Other teams included the Mayors official team this year featuring the Mayor Councillor Andrea Baughan, two teams from West Wycombe School (Tigers and Sharks) and some Bee Keepers.
You can hear the full race coverage below.
In the first round, West Wycombe Schools Shark and Tigers team, as well as Eden Security, won their races and moved into the second round where both West Wycombe School teams won and went head to head in the final race where the Sharks won overall!

Bosses of the world’s most famous board game have fallen in love with High Wycombe that today have announced it has landed the honour of its very own official game – after seeing off 24 other places across the globe, some A-List on glam and glitz
Each year the MONOPOLY dice roll on a new place – over the last two years it has been Palm Springs in leafy Riverside County, California and The Hamptons in New York state – and High Wycombe has beaten a shortlist of 24 other places from across the world (some of these perhaps perceived as far more glamorous, including Carmel-by-the-Sea in Monterey, California).
Bosses at London-based games company Winning Moves, who are producing the game under licensing from Hasbro, say a variety of factors were used in selecting the winning place. These include ‘Pride’; ‘Beauty’ and ‘Sense of Community.

Today is opening night for this year’s Wycombe Swan Pantomime Peter Pan featuring Jake Wood (EastEnders, Strictly), Jake Canuso (Benidorm), Niki Evans (X-Factor), pantomime comedy legend Jamie Brook and the talented Giselle Byron.
Colin spoke to Jake Canuso, best known as Benidorm barman Matteo, who is looking forward to the opportunity to return to performing.

Wycombe Homeless Connection has noticed an increase in those sleeping rough in the south of the county.
The charity will be running a winter project from the start of December and need to raise over 100 thousand pounds to operate the service.
They’re not able to operate their annual night shelter due to the pandemic and next Friday’s Big Sleep Out at home and Big Quiz aim to bring in much-needed funding.

It’s just two weeks until the town’s Christmas Lights are switched on and it’s going to be a star-studded treat for all the family!
We will be live from the light switch on along with the full cast of The Wycombe Swan’s ‘Peter Pan’ Pantomime – including Jake Wood (Eastenders/Strictly) and Jake Canuso (Benidorm) and singing to the crowds during the event Wycombe Wanderers Manager, Gareth Ainsworth!
The Christmas Light Switch On event kicks off from 3 pm with LIVE performances on the High Street stage, including Jackie Palmer’s Stage School & the BNU Swans Cheerleaders, plus a mouth-watering Food Truck Market, festive freebies, children’s rides & entertainment, over 25 Christmas Gift Stalls and of course Father Christmas
Keeping with the theme of this year’s Panto there will be a ‘Peter Pan Parade’ – led by Captain Hook’s very own 12ft Wooden Ship – will be starting its journey at 5.30 pm, departing from The Swan Theatre, and sailing its way down the High Street. Featuring 100+ ‘Tinkerbells’ & ‘Pirates’ from Widmer End School, Marsh Infant School & Manor Farm Junior School
On the main stage from 5.15pm, performances from 10 local dance, music & drama group before the ‘Switch On Ceremony’ at 6.45pm our Celebrity ship will dock in Frogmoor, and the famous faces will head for the stage – including High Wycombe’s esteemed Mayor Cllr Andrea Baughan & Chairman of Buckinghamshire Council Zahir Mohammed
The event is being organised by HWBidCo, chief cheerleaders for High Wycombe town centre. Chief Executive Melanie Williams commented; “It’s fantastic to be able to bring our traditional Christmas Light Switch On Event back to High Wycombe this year, and we’re so pleased to have so many local businesses, performance groups & organisations involved. It’s a real community ‘feel good’ event and we can’t wait to welcome everyone to the town centre on 18th November to kick off the festive season in style – it’s going to be a great day!
