ORIGINS RCRDS unveils a brand-new series this March entitled 'This Is ORIGINS' as label boss Josh Butler welcomes Demuir, Flashmob, Michel de Hey and JPA for Volume 1.
Founded in late-2016, Josh Butler's ORIGINS RCRDS imprint continues to go from strength to strength as one of house music's most consistent and impressive growing labels, welcoming the likes of Kerri Chandler, Groove Armada and Richy Ahmed through to rising talents including ANOTR, Ben Rau and Dennis Quin across the catalogue to date. Having closed the year with the debut of Butler's own Timezones series, early 2020 will also welcome a second new addition to the label's output as we see the launch of a new various artist series entitled 'This Is ORIGINS', with the first instalment welcoming a debut collaboration between Demuir and Butler himself, plus three label debuts from Flashmob, Michel de Hey and JPA.
Butler kicks things off alongside rising Toronto talent Demuir as they deliver the slick 'Tropicana', a slinking house cut guided by blossoming melodies, bumping bass licks and icy hats throughout. Next, Flashmob delivers the first of three label debuts with 'The Island', a driving production armed with crisp snares and distorted vocal snippets, whilst Michael de Hey's lively 'Garyamoi' sees the introduction of rich chord stabs atop of rolling organic percussion to great effect. To close, rising Melbourne talent JPA reveals his contribution 'Here Now' - a dubby closer fusing bright synth lines and further resonant vocals to wrap things up in impressive fashion.

It is one firmly aimed at the dance floor, just how Michel likes it, and some tracks feature his own vocals, all of which are designed to make you forget about the world around you. Some of the tracks have previously been released as vinyl only or anonymously, and the artist himself says:
“In the time this was written, I moved to Amsterdam, I got divorced, I had too many long weekends, I turned 50 and most importantly, after 30 years, I finally re-found the pleasure and satisfaction of working in the studio. I can listen to all the tracks with pleasure and pride although each track stands for a different phase in my grieving process and getting over my various turmoils.”
Musically the album packs a real punch across ten tight tracks, from the deep opening grooves of ‘Dawning’ to the more unhinged synths and spinning hi-hats of the cosmic ‘I Am Not Looking For’. ‘Just One Turn’ is pure, infectious house music, while ‘I Just Want More And More’ ups the ante with punchy drums but melancholic chords. Excellent opener ‘Baby Work Mine’ fits in smoothly with the huge Pokerflat release he did, and when the bassline kicks in it will bring a smile to faces as well as keep feet busy. It’s a chunky house tune with playful bass and chord vamps that make you want to wiggle. On the fantastic flip, ‘HEYHO’ has been around for two years and has been a big last tune in Michel’s sets, so is a real anthem already. It is slightly different from his usual outings with sing-along African chords and piano stabs married to a loose house groove, and is destined to stick in your head until well beyond the next morning. With the sold out night at Restaurant Baut during ADE 2014 still fresh in our memory we are sure this will also be a night to remember.
