Save the Redwoods League secured $6.5 million to purchase Russian River Redwoods, including a $2 million bridge loan from the David and Lucille Packard Foundation, a $500,000 matching gift from the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria and donations from more than 2,000 supporters. Donations will also support the nonprofit’s project costs and stewardship of the forest until it can be transferred to Sonoma County for long-term protection. The goal is to use what the aquarium has learned about marine mammals to save wild animals in danger (many times of extinction). Once they bring affected animals to the rescue center, they treat them -- as in a hospital -- and then release them back into the wild.
