Fair to say this has been one of the toughest fortnights of my life. Won't get into why, but it's been a rollercoaster...
I wanted to get something submitted as a creative release for my mental health. I was resigned to the fact I just wasn't gunna make it (again).
But at the eleventh hour, out of nowhere came @megadead offering me one of his lovely Outer Space beats from the past to muck around with. Immediately I knew I wanted to turn it into a cover of The Weeknd's Blinding Lights.
I sat down with his instrumentation late this afternoon and cut together this edit, worked in the samples, and the riff. Everything else is Megadead, besides my vocal, which I spent the bulk of the time getting the fx chains right for.

The ambitious new single for both Kathana (Washington, USA) and Spectoral (Melbourne, AUS), DAISY LANE is their debut collaborative release; a nimble blend of ultramodern pop laced with trip-hop and wavy electronica.
Weaving in sounds obliquely reminiscent of contemporaries like Boards Of Canada, TOKiMONSTA, Caribou, Tourist and Golden Vessel, Spectoral expertly delivers us a highly textured slow-jam here, flipping Kathana's flowery single into a new canvas of fading warmth, setting suns and wistful thoughts.
Explaining how the song came about, Spectoral says; “I was really taken by Kathana’s beautiful vocal delivery and had to reach out to her about remixing this hook. There’s a sweet vulnerability behind the way she sings that refrain that I wanted to paint around and explore. I’d recently read a great interview with Dan Snaith of Caribou, and there’s this part where he says he was excited by the idea of “leaving in the jagged edges” that would normally be shaved down for a typical pop record. That sort of freedom is definitely something I wanted to express in my treatment of this song for Kathana.”
The addition of Spectoral's vulnerable falsetto in the second verse juxtaposes incredibly beside Kathana's escapist refrain. The song evolves constantly before taking us home for one last chorus; we’ll be yearning for more of this gem late into the “summer, summer, summertime”.

Australian born to Mauritian and Slovakian parents, Spectoral is an artist rising out of the vibrant, live performing scene of producers and songwriters in Melbourne.
Known for his sultry pop vocal style, Spectoral blends intimate lyricism with his unique brand of textured hip-hop, indie electronic and indie-RnB influenced production.
In 2017, Spectoral charted on Hype Machine, was featured in their Spotify playlist, and was invited as a guest for television and radio spots with SYN, 1700 and Plenty Valley FM.
In 2018, Spectoral's music achieved national radio and press coverage, premiering with SCENESTR nationally, airing on stations around the country including SYN, Radio Adelaide, Southern FM, Plenty Valley, 3WBC and Bondi just to name a few.
In October 2018, Spectoral was featured on both Triple J and Triple J Unearthed several times thanks to his signature re-interpretation of DMAs' "The End". That same week he released his highly anticipated sophomore EP, "An Incorruptible Dream", working with notable Australian heavyweights such as Tim Watt and Tim McArtney (Golden Features, Muto, GRMM), Ben Feggans (The Kite String Tangle, Ngaiire), Sebastian Ivanhov (Alius), Robin Waters (Darling James, Ella Hooper) and Klaus Hill (Pnau, Kilter, Ministry of Sound Australia).

Australian born to Mauritian and Slovakian parents, Spectoral is a singer-songwriter rising out of the tightly connected Melbourne producer scene. Spectoral’s sprawling “Love Somebody Else” is a pop record built upon the idea of representing the natural world with synthetic sound design. Bird calls are represented by sampled fax machines and dial up modems while breezy pads wander below the insect-like chirps of CD-skipping clicks.
Produced by Spectoral, the track was co-written and co-produced by Australian hitmakers Tim McArtney and Tim Watt (George Maple, Flume, Touch Sensitive), with Watt handled mixing duties. The track has been mastered by the world class Ben Feggans at Studios 301 (Hayden James, Flume. Ngaiire).
"I was watching David Attenborough's Planet Earth II one night and got super inspired by the scene with the male widow birds.” says the producer. “They have these ridiculously long tails that makes it super hard to fly and survive, but they turn this burden into an advantage for attracting a mate. I really liked that."
Spectoral’s sultry, synthesized vocals carry the listener through clever lyrical similes as the future-soul producer lets the “dawn chorus of a beating heart” call us to “start to learn to love somebody else”. By the end of it’s tight 3:35 runtime you’ll have this record well and truly stuck in your head.
