Honey Soundsystem Potcast: Recent Episodes
HONEY SOUNDSYSTEM
San Francisco's Honey Soundsystem consist of touring residents Jacob Sperber (aka Jackie House), Jason Kendig, and Robert Yang (aka Robot Hustle / Beziér). The collective also runs the an in-house record label most known for it's work with long lost Patrick Cowley music. As of late the label has been instrumental in supporting music from artists that have played our events or influenced our sound. Forming in late 2006 the group has held many formations (as many as 6 members) and performed at and thrown events all over the US, Europe, even to the far reaches of Shanghai. Honey is most known for its 5 year Sunday night weekly party in San Francisco which saw hundreds of distinguished guests - many of whose sets have been recorded and shared on this Soundcloud page.

"After much thought I decided to present this mix in the style I first learned to practice as a young person approaching the end of a century. A mixtape, a personal letter from one friend to another. A lullaby, a soothing refrain to calm the storm in our souls. With this collection of songs I wish to honor those in our lives whose time has come and gone. To mourn their passing but also to celebrate their season, when life was high and our days seemed never-ending. Just as this loss seems to have drained our hearts leaving us empty and cold, the tide will eventually turn and fill us up once again, restoring our faith that love, like the stardust we are made of, is everlasting. It all started with a handful of cash but ended in eviction.
Always intended as a story in two parts, Jules Smith aka October's Eviction EP is the six-song follow up to his Pay Day EP, we unleashed in late 2018. An album's worth of material made 'just for Honey Soundsystem' Jules is back with his sleazy Prophet-one driven industrial disco.
As indulgent as the rave sirens and snare pummels on the title track seem, October's sheer mastery in production and studio mixing turn these tongue-in-cheek-in-your-face nightclub firecrackers into delicacies. Oh! And file 'Larry Bruce Chest Thumper' under Front 242 and i:Cube doing a line off of an iPhone together.

Unbeknownst to each other, the Honey crew in San Francisco and the Beesmunt duo in Amsterdam have been brothers from another mother working away in their respective zones for years. A bit of internet sleuthing and the two entities found each other, perplexed by the similarities in namesake and good vibes. Before exchanging a single word, earlier this year David and Luigi of Beesmunt sent Honey some demos. They were a declaration of peace and understanding of sorts and both "sound systems" immediately fell into one. The three tracks romanced all the Honey sensibilities including references to San Francisco 80's Hi-HRG synths, early House drum machine workouts, and melodic lines you can make-out on a dancefloor to. To make the marriage official, Honey enlisted its own Jason Kendig to remix the A-side into a no-nonsense thumper with a heart of gold. We think these tunes are going to become as reliable on the dancefloor as the Sequential Circuits drum sounds and DX7 patches they employ. Whether it be ending sets with the euphoric “Blissed Out” or peak-time banging call and response of “Playin' Myself”, Honey finally shares its best kept secret weapons of the year with the eager public.

A multi-instrumentalist, Robert was trained in saxophone starting at age 10, before moving onto a Fender Telecaster after high school. After being exposed to Southern California rave culture in the late 90s, he moved onto DJing and collecting records. By the time he planted his roots in San Francisco in 2005, Robert had built an impressive analog synth-based studio, which also serves as the creative hub for his riveting live performances.
'Cosmologist' explores Robert’s personal universe with three tracks that connect his varied musical lineages. "Cosmos", a celebration of the late 80s/early 90s KIIS FM universe, is built around an infectious freestyle hook that morphs into a seven minute tour of intersecting styles. "Ether" begins as gothic night-driving electro, but breaks into fantasy-scapes inspired by Italo and 1980s Japanese anime theme songs. The final track, "d. Quelle", clocks in at over 11 minutes, incorporating bebop jazz solos drawn from his early exposure to improvisation techniques by Charlie Parker, Cannonball Adderley, and Stan Getz. All songs have been mixed by Mark Pistel (Meat Beat Manifesto, Consolidated) at Room 5, San Francisco and EQed for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios.

In his college days Justin dove into electronic music, workshopping new-wave influenced beats in bands and DJing parties. Currently, Justin is a fixture across Brooklyn, popping up on dance floors and behind booths, where he has spun records at his Hotmix parties along with Mike Servito and Gunnar Haslam.

L.I.E.S. mainstay Gunnar Haslam provides his “Dekalb Avenue Remix” made while living in New York, a modular synth cruise with the top down. Honey Soundsystem is proud to present an unreleased disco 12” by San Francisco-based musician and producer, Patrick Cowley. Perhaps one of the most revolutionary and influential people in the canon of disco music, Cowley created his own brand of Hi-NRG dance music, "The San Francisco Sound." During the 70s, Patrick was the lighting technician at The City disco in San Francisco’s North Beach neighborhood. This was SF’s largest Gay entertainment complex, where everyone from Grace Jones to Sylvester would perform. Frank Loverde was performing there with his band Loverde when Patrick asked if the band would like to do backups on some songs he’d been working on. Frank, Linda Imperial and Timmy went to Patrick’s studio and laid down vocals for songs, most of which were never released and remained buried in the Megatone vaults.
In 2007 Honey Soundsystem was contacted by the former owner of Megatone Records John Hedges. Hedges’ was moving to Palm Springs and invited us over to his basement to collect over 2,000 records from his collection. Among the archives we noticed three moldy boxes of quarter inch reel to reel tapes. Included was the final mixed down reel for “Kickin’ In”, an epic 12-minute journey through disco, that Patrick recorded with Loverde in 1978. From the two minute plus drum solo that builds up to the introduction of a bouncing arpeggiated Prophet IV and the harmonized vocals, all transport the listener to another realm. The song encapsulates the Hi-NRG dance music that Patrick became known for. It was an “up” sound for the gay disco scene, music that would compliment and sometimes enhance all night dancing. On the flip are two earlier songs produced between 1975-77 featuring basslines by college classmate and studio mate Maurice Tani. Both songs feature Patrick narrating erotic gay sex fantasies inspired by San Francisco’s leather bars, back rooms and bathhouses. These songs show the sleazy side of Cowley’s slow burning, oozing electronic creations with layers and layers of synthesizer, guitar, drum machine and vocoder.
All songs have been mastered by George Horn, who originally mastered all of the Megatone Records releases at Fantasy Studios. Each 12” comes housed in our custom Honey Soundsystem die-cut jacket featuring an illustration of the San Francisco skyline. Also included is a 8 inch square postcard of the original “Kickin’ In” reel to reel box with Patrick’s handwriting on the front and lyrics on the back. “Patrick parted the veil and entered a dark world of forbidden vices, wondrous musical panoramas and bold, strident, hopeful possibilities. From the two minute plus drum solo that builds up to the introduction of a bouncing arpeggiated Prophet IV and the harmonized vocals, all transport the listener to another realm. The song encapsulates the Hi-NRG dance music that Patrick became known for. It was an “up” sound for the gay disco scene, music that would compliment and sometimes enhance all night dancing. On the flip are two earlier songs produced between 1975-77 featuring basslines by college classmate and studio mate Maurice Tani. Both songs feature Patrick narrating erotic gay sex fantasies inspired by San Francisco’s leather bars, back rooms and bathhouses. These songs show the sleazy side of Cowley’s slow burning, oozing electronic creations with layers and layers of synthesizer, guitar, drum machine and vocoder.
All songs have been mastered by George Horn, who originally mastered all of the Megatone Records releases at Fantasy Studios. Each 12” comes housed in our custom Honey Soundsystem die-cut jacket featuring an illustration of the San Francisco skyline. Since 2010, Sperber has been driving the A&R side of the San Francisco dance-music troupe running the HNYTRX label and producing remixes with other members under the Honey name. Putting label duties on hold in 2013 Sperber cocooned into his music studio, entering as a brave brunette and exiting as an ambitious blonde.
"Stydive" is Jackie's debut to wax and has as much house-party in it as it does warehouse 4am. With a vocal sample nod to punk's past, “Stydive” pogo dances to dusty and stuttering live/analog drum rhythms and skips along a rude and infectious bass-line. Bound to find lovers of all persuasions for its dub-esque qualities, instantly recognizable hook, and open relationship with house music, this tune begged to have it's own side. That said, there is always room for some Matrixxman who takes Stydive to a strobe lit South of Market darkroom in his remix on the B. Spurting erotic lazers around a cavernous kick, this tune finishes off even the most experienced edger. Both songs have been EQed for vinyl and cut to lacquer by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. Honey Soundsystem is proud to reinaugurate their record label with a new 12” from resident DJ Robert Yang, also known as Bézier. Over the past several years Robert has seen releases on the Dark Entries record imprint, the most recent of which is the “Telomeres” EP. The title track 皆 (pronounced ‘mina’) translates from Japanese to ‘Everyone’. "Mina" is the story of a journey through space. The initial ascent is marked by uncertainty: "Is this vessel safe, and where is it bound?". Calm resumes after leaving orbit, until the space craft reaches its final destination: an interplanetary discotheque! Mina was recorded and mixed this year with the assistance of Mark Pistel. The track also features SF drummer Kevin Woodruff of Tussle fame.
The B-side includes two previously released tracks, now available for the first time on vinyl. ‘Serengeti Drive’ is a chugging slow burner, and first appeared on Honey Soundsystem’s earlier HNYTRX compilation of queer dancefloor artists. ‘Mysteries of the Deep’ explores more aquatic terrain, and was released on the JACKTONE cassette compilation of Bay Area electronic music stars. Both tracks were recorded, produced and mixed by Robert in his home studio in 2009. Vinyl EQ and lacquer were cut by George Horn at Fantasy Studios.
