Sharing some of the painful stories in our lives is hard and tremendously brave. And I am tremendously thankful to those of you willing to bear your hearts with me on Shame Free Eating. On the show today my guest Jessi shares her dieting story. As great as the idea seemed for each new diet and the momentum it seemed to provide in her life — it ultimately drained her of vitality, confidence in herself, and the ability to keep dieting. What was the final straw and how has the journey looked as she reclaimed true control and trust in herself?

This is a rough episode. I discuss aspects of the new guidelines put out by the AAP, and the reasons they are harmful to children and scientifically unsound.

In this conversation with Registered Dietitian Adrien Paczosa we dive into the neuro-biochemistry behind food and its connection to aspects of mental health. Listen in for why carbs play such an important role and the lesser-known surprise benefits of potassium-rich foods!

Adrien is the Chief Clinical Officer and Founder of the tele-nutrition company Nourish and host of the podcast Fearless Practitioners. In the show, we have a nice chat about the value of these two areas in which she practices too! Listen in to learn more.

Here is the link to her handout on food and mood!

More about Adrien:

Adrien Paczosa (RD, LD, CDERD-S) has more than 20 years of experience working in the dietetic field with a focus on

eating disorders, neurochemistry nutrition, and business development. In 2007, Paczosa founded and opened her first

private practice in Austin, Texas called iLiveWell Nutrition. Paczosa combined evidence-based nutrition science with a

compassionate approach to counseling patients to deliver health outcomes and improve patients’ day-to-day lives.

She has personally counseled hundreds of patients ranging from severe eating disorder cases to diabetics to high-

performance athletes.

A few years later, iLiveWell Nutrition has become Nourish — a nationwide, virtual-first nutrition group focused on

addressing America’s healthcare crisis through greater access to nutrition care. Paczosa now serves as the Chief

Clinical Officer of Nourish and what started out as just an idea now serves thousands of patients, nearly all of whom use

the service via telehealth and are completely covered by their health insurance.

Motivation, morality, and food. Do you feel a sense of pride for eating certain foods and then guilt or shame when you make other choices? Maybe you are trying to motivate yourself to eat certain foods with the assertion that it is the "right" and "moral" thing to do.

Listen in as I chat with my friend Courtney about this and some insight that she gleaned from something that clinical psychologist Dr. Becky said recently. We also pull from my episode with Dr. Shawn Hondorp to glean additional insight on this topic by reviewing her three psychological needs for autonomous motivation.

You are not alone. Listen in and follow along in the book if that’s your jam. Then join us again next week as we dive into more of the book, talking about comparison, navigating objectification with kids, and being yourself.

Listen in as I go live on the Undiet App answering some great listener/follower questions!

We talk about if alcohol and intuitive eating can coexist...spoiler, they can, and what that might look like.

We dive into physical versus mental food restriction and hunger, staying on the challenging body image/embodiment path when your body changes and it feels scary, and the age-old objection that weight loss must be necessary to help with sore knees.

I also answer some digestive health questions that pertain to IBS, lactose, and dealing with food intolerances.

You may be wondering where it was that I went live to answer these questions, and the answer is the Undiet Your Mind App. It's a wonderful resource with a variety of Anti-diet and HAES aligned practitioners provide recorded classes, courses, meditations, exercises, articles and more. The world is heavy and hard right now. I am grieving for the children and families of Uvalde Texas as well as every single person impacted by gun violence. For some it is a constant fear and trauma. It's so hard to know how to move forward, and how to offer support to those who are grieving.

In this episode I talk about why we take food to those who are grieving, and the very natural and loving gesture that it is. Food is a constant necessity in our lives. What a beautiful thing that it can be used to show love and support when there are just no answers.

Listen in to hear some accounts that folks have shared about their experiences with losing weight and the unsolicited comments they receive. Our culture values a smaller body to such an extent that sometimes serious diseases and hardships are overlooked in the praising of weight loss. These comments reinforce the lies that being thinner is always better further perpetuating weight stigma, discrimination, health disparities, and a toxic diet culture.

The stories I read in this episode were taken from the book More Than A Body by Lindsay Kite PhD and Lexie Kite PhD. You can find a copy here: https://tinyurl.com/ynd8u5e5

Join me as I speak to a couple very common concerns related to "needing" to lose weight. We will also go over how the ideas of "I'm just watching what I eat", or "eating in moderation is the key", or "it's just about making a lifestyle change" can also be sneaky ways of keeping us mired in diet culture. It's sounds like it makes sense and is a healthy way to move forward, so what's the problem?

We sure do give a lot of power to what we eat. I get it, I love all the cool things that food does for us, after all, I am a dietitian! Yet, in the grand scheme of our life how much impact do our diet patterns have on our health?

In this episode I talk about the space that dietary patterns technically occupy, and then I show you how dieting and food restriction bleeds into the other areas that determine health, impacting them negatively!

Have you ever considered that your overall lack of food intake could be sabotaging your attempts at choosing the apple over the cupcake (not that there's anything wrong with the cupcake!)?

Just like in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs discussed in a previous episode, we must be getting enough to eat before expecting our body to crave a more nutritionally diverse diet.

Are you ready for a positive, empowering, and healing challenge for 2022? Listen in as I walk you through the Ditch the Diet Pledge. I share with you how each aspect will meet you where you are and prepare your mind for an impactful shift.

Our whole world is on the struggle bus as we continue to traverse a new normal. Our mental health is collectively suffering, but setting dieting and weight loss goals will not provide the control or healing that we are desperate for. We need positivity in our lives and some tools for tapping into what truly matters.

The Ditch the Diet Pledge!

I solemnly swear to eat food.
This includes, but is not limited to, carbs, sugar, fat, and other foods that make me feel warm, fuzzy, well-fed, and loved.
I will not count calories and adjust my intake based on nebulous food rules.
I will not berate myself, my body, or my food choices.
I will not engage in good food/bad food conversations with myself or others.
I will remember that diet culture has fostered a false narrative that I have been living by and it is not serving me. Dieting has contributed to the problem that it purports to solve, and this is not my fault.
Instead
I will learn to listen to and trust my body and the internal cues that it provides.
I will trust in the process of rejecting the diet culture, and embracing the new ways of thinking about food and myself that come along with it.
I will recognize that we all deserve to eat.
Our cravings are not gluttonous acts of mutiny by our body, but rather natural mechanisms designed to keep us fed and alive.
And I will remind myself of my value regardless of what I choose to eat.

This episode is a breath of fresh air for anyone drowning in diet culture — so all of us! Tune in as I interview Victoria Welsby (they/them), a world-leading expert on dismantling fatphobia and diet-culture, TEDx speaker, and best-selling author. They went from being homeless, abused with self-esteem that was achingly low, into the courageous fat activist and change maker they are today. Victoria helps people fall in love with themselves and is dedicated to shifting the way society views fat bodies.
We talk about what led Victoria into this work and the relationship between fatphobia and diet-culture. We also dig into the fasle rhetoric people use to justify their anti-fat bias as being about health. What constitutes health anyway, how much control do we have over it, and why being healthy is not a moral obligation.

The start of school has me pondering all the trials and tribulations of fitting in and dealing with change, discrimination, and judgement.

It's no wonder middle school kids don't want to draw attention to themselves. It's hard work coming to terms with how the world views us, and then figuring out how to move forward with that information.

Unfortunately our society believes that weight can and should be manipulated. So when we feel uncomfortable and as if our body doesn't "fit in" with others, our natural instinct is to "fix" it.
